The Westminster Tradition

The starter's gun has gone on Australia's national elections for 2025 and Parliament has been prorogued. In this episode, former head of Cabinet Office and keeper of the Caretaker Conventions, Alison answers Caroline and Danielle's increasingly pointed questions, and we end with arguing about the importance of formatting.Stay tuned to the end for some fabulous insider advice for managing caretaker period and elections as a public servant. This episode is dedicated to the significant birthday of Sandy Pitcher, a public service legend (read more about her here).Intro grab courtesy of the Hon Nat Cook MP, Minister for Human Services (SA).Now for some appropriately bureaucratic disclaimers....While we have tried to be as thorough in our research as busy full time jobs and lives allow, we definitely don't guarantee that we've got all the details right. If you want rigorous reporting on Robodebt, we recommend the work of Rick Morton at the Saturday Paper, Chris Knaus and Luke Henriques-Gomes at the Guardian, Ben Eltham at Crikey, Julian Bajkowski at The Mandarin, and of course, the Robodebt Royal Commission itself. Please feel free to email us corrections, episode suggestions, or anything else, at thewestminstertraditionpod@gmail.com.Thanks to PanPot audio for our intro and outro music. Pocket-Sized Podcasting With Alitu

Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re talking about recording vox-pops. This is something you’ll have seen on TV before. Vox populi, or voice of the people, is when a few random members of the public each answer the same question, or give their opinion on something topical. These short clips are then edited together to create a piece of content. So have a think about some topics or questions you might be able to ask on your show. Think about the locations you might record them, too. You’ll find plenty people at your local shopping centre, or, you might do this at a dedicated event where knowledge of your topic is already assumed. Be sure to let folks know that it’s for your podcast, and give them a business card so they can find and follow it. This is a great way to find new listeners, as well as create good content for your next episode. Thanks for listening to Pocket-Sized Podcasting. What grabs you as a kid listening to songs on the radio may still grab you as an adult... but the nuances often come out after you've had years to process them, all informed by life experience. This was true for Rob and Steely Dan's 1972 debut record Can't Buy a Thrill. It was an album he immersed himself in his twenties during his first flush of CD buying. But as a little kid, the big radio singles sounded weird and even terrifying – and sometimes hilarious – to him. So, what's the real identity of the music beyond what listeners hear in it wherever they are in their lives? It's a big question. Of course, as always, music is weird, with a lot of it splitting rooms and creating friction among otherwise friendly discussions between music fans. Does that play out here among the Deeper Cuts trio? Where do they stand on the Steely Dan divide? Where do musical expectations come into this discussion of how we hear music from one point in our lives to another? And what of this album, specifically? Is it a thrill? Or do the Deeper Cuts Trio not buy it? Not going to click to find out? C'mon. Only a fool would say that (just kidding, please click). The music from every episode this season can be found our Spotify Playlist. Also, don't forget to talk to us on Twitter (@deepercutscast) and to rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts! First up is a rising star in the domain of professional eating. James Webb, who finished 3rd in Nathan's Famous Hot Dog eating contest, talks to the boys about how he fell into the world competitive eating and how a chance meeting with Nathan Hindmarsh set him on the path to Parramatta. The Parranutta Prophet is our second guest this week with fellow fans most likely recognising him for his amazing costumes at CommBank Stadium home games. The boys talk about his talent for dressing up and the joys that connection has brought to young Parra fans. The Tip Sheet then goes international as last up is Ron who hails from the US of A. Ron provides a fascinating insight into international fandom after discovering the NRL during the COVID lockdown. The trio discuss how he became a fan of the Eels, what his learning process was and how he has connected to other fans over here in Australia. On top of their three unique backgrounds and stories, Sixties and Forty20 quiz their guests on Parramatta's journey through the 2022 season as well as the unfinished business that lies ahead!

Pocket-Sized Podcasting With Alitu

Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we're talking about recording vox-pops. This is something you'll have seen on TV before. Vox populi, or voice of the people, is when a few random members of the public each answer the same question, or give their opinion on something topical. These short clips are then edited together to create a piece of content. So have a think about some topics or questions you might be able to ask on your show. Think about the locations you might record them, too. You'll find plenty people at your local shopping centre, or, you might do this at a dedicated event where knowledge of your topic is already assumed. Be sure to let folks know that it's for your podcast, and give them a business card so they can find and follow it. This is a great way to find new listeners, as well as create good content for your next episode. Thanks for listening to Pocket-Sized Podcasting. So, to make things easy for me, we discuss both BIG BROTHER and its CELEBRITY stablemate, before moving on via STRICTLY COME DANCING to BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT, and THE X FACTOR. Paul fondly recalls a favourite of his COME DINE WITH ME and we take a tentative dive into the perceived psychology of both the contestants and the viewers of such programmes, including their impact upon social media. We also ask what the definition of reality television really is, and whether it has a far longer history than either of us realise. Paul then reels me into the mysterious world of CATFISH, and I summon up a few memories of the documentaries, quiz shows, and Vox Pops which I think of as being reality tv by any other name. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version.
