Supplement confusion is at an all-time high, with social media feeds flooded with miracle promises targeting menopausal women. But how do you know what you actually need, what works, and what's just expensive snake oil?Pharmacist and nutritionist Sarah Gray brings her dual expertise to this conversation, offering practical guidance for navigating the overwhelming world of supplementation. Unlike most health professionals who specialise in either conventional medicine or natural approaches, Sarah bridges both worlds, providing uniquely balanced insights into what supplements might actually benefit women in midlife. This episode delivers specific, actionable advice you can use immediately. Learn the simple trick for identifying quality supplements (look for the AUST-L or AUST-R code), understand which baseline blood tests you should request from your doctor, and discover why blindly following supplement trends can waste your money and potentially harm your health. Sarah warns against the common practice of continuously adding supplements without removing any, explaining how this can lead to accidental overuse of certain nutrients. We take a deep dive into the essential blood work every midlife woman should request annually. Sarah explains how certain symptoms commonly attributed to perimenopause could signal nutritional deficiencies that won't necessarily improve with hormone therapy. And you don't want to miss our discussion about Creatine - arguably the most evidence-backed supplement for women in midlife - which offers benefits for muscle strength, mood regulation, and the immune system.Take control of your health by understanding exactly what your body needs rather than what clever marketing suggests you buy. Your journey through perimenopause and beyond deserves an evidence-based approach to supplementation that works.LinksSarah Gray - Nutrition Pharmacist websiteSarah on InstagramSarah on FacebookThe Benefits of Creatine by Dr Mary Claire HaverWhy Creatine Matters for Women 40+ by Harvard Lifestyle MedicineEffects of six-month creatine supplementation on patient- and clinician-reported outcomes, and tissue creatine levels in patients with post-COVID-19 fatigue syndromeThank you for listening to my show! In this episode, Cherise is joined by Sarah Gray, P.Eng., Principal and Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Science Inc. Sarah is a self-proclaimed building science nerd, having worked on the design of new buildings and repairs to existing buildings for over 20 years. She shares her experience retrofitting Social housing apartment towers in Toronto, Ontario. These apartment towers, built in the 1960s, are mid to high rise towers, made of a concrete block structure with brick cladding. Retrofitting this typology presented unique challenges and opportunities - complexities in management have led to the buildings receiving no maintenance or upgrades in 20 years or more, typical government processes seek lowest bids from contractors who may not have experience working with existing buildings, and outdated standards of construction techniques and building codes make retrofitting more complex. This is the last day of April. The month of April has been National Poetry Month. It is interesting that a dear friend in Florida sent me in the mail, an original poem she wrote on her birthday. It is such a joy to be able to share with the readers of this warm thoughts column, the gems of thought and poetry. So thanks to Sarah Gray for her precious thoughts. Little pleasures. Oh, the joy of little pleasures tucked away in memory's treasures. Hummingbirds and butterflies, the clear blue of summer skies. Fragrant flowers wet with dew, prism colors of rainbow hue. Baby's breath and baby soft skin, little drools on baby's chin. Baby smiles and baby's coos, the things that make baby book news. A pretty car with words that rhyme, the distant peel of church bells chime. Quiet time, a good book, heads that turn for a second look. Time spent together, small talk, an afternoon nap or an afternoon walk. A smile exchanged over a cup of tea, a confidence confided just to me. A box of chocolate, a compliment, when most needed, heaven sent. The peaceful calm of a gentle breeze, I sense God's touch in all of these. A phone call or visit from a friend, little pleasures, just never end. This past week, poetry took precedence over politics at the White House. President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, hosted the present and two past Poets Laureate. The trio read from the legacy of American poetry. The event is the third in a series of Presidential Millennium evenings, designed to showcase the views of scholars and artists as the century closes. Thanks again dear readers, for sharing your warm thoughts. More Warm Thoughts: How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it. Remember the first Thursday in May is National Day of Prayer. Mom Story – Misconceptions in Motherhood with Sarah Gray   Before we become mothers it is common for our experiences, paths and research to already guide us down the path to the type of mother we want to be or parenting style we want to follow. Sometimes when baby comes this path fits perfectly and is exactly what we pictures but often times, it is not. Misconceptions in parenting styles can lead us to think that even if it is not as you imagined, you chose it so it is what it is. Sarah believed that Attachment Parenting was the perfect path for her and guess what? 10 months in, it still is. This style of parenting fits her family well in so many areas but there was one that didn’t go as she imagined…sleep! Mentors in her life who choose the same parenting style and the research she did in the area made her think that if she chose this path, sleepless nights would just be a thing. The Exam Room by the Physicians Committee

True story: A woman is overjoyed to learn that not only is she pregnant, but that she’s carrying twins. Then doctors make a devastating discovery. One of the children has developed a fatal birth defect and will not survive long outside the womb. The news is soul crushing.   But the woman and her husband are determined that their child’s life, however brief, will have great purpose. Prior to giving birth, they arrange to donate the boy’s eyes, organs, and blood to medical research. And the impact of those gifts would turn out to be extraordinary.   Countless lives are now being positively impacted because of the couple’s heart-wrenching decision. Indeed, his short life touched more people than many who inhabit the earth for 80 years or longer.   They did not realize it at the time, but the impact would also extend beyond human life as the lives of countless animals would also be spared because of the donations.   On this special episode of The Exam Room™ Podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll sits down Sarah Gray who details an emotional journey that began before birth and continued on long after the death of her son, Thomas, as she tracked down the researchers were using the organs as part of trailblazing medical science.   Gray has also chronicled the story in the book A Life Everlasting, which she dedicated to Thomas.   Chuck is also joined by Kristie Sullivan who is the Vice President of Research Policy for the Physicians Committee. She has interesting insight on the specific diseases that are benefitting from organ and tissue donation, including the leading forms of cancer.   Kristie also details how animals can be spared from medical research because of your decision to donate!   Follow   Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC / @PCRM   IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC / @PhysiciansCommittee   Share the Show   Please pass along what you’ve learned on the show by sharing it with a friend and by subscribing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. “Stucco is an exterior finish, and more specifically, we tend to think of it as an exterior plaster finish. In some of the literature and in architectural dictionaries, stucco can be used for both exterior and interior finish work, but really in this day and age, we talk about plaster, particularly in North America, for interior work.” —Sarah Gray, an engineer with RDH Building Science

Would you, could you or should you donate your body to science? That might be a hard enough question to answer but what about donating your children's tissue to research after their death. This is exactly the situation Sarah Gray and her husband found themselves in when one of their twins, Thomas, died. Thomas, was born with anencephaly and died 6 days after birth. Sarah and her husband donated Thomas's tissues for scientific research. With time Sarah's desire to know what Thomas's tissue has been used for got the better of her. She went on an extraordinary journey to understand the full extent of Thomas's legacy, visiting the institutions which had received parts of his liver and eyes and tracing the scientific impact of his donation. Joanne Mullarky is a research nurse at the University of Bradford's Human Tissue Bank. When she heard Sarah's story she changed the way she worked and now today thinks that a stronger relationship between academic institutions and donor parents is vital to increasing the amount of tissue donated. Tissue that is currently rarely donated. A Brainwaves special recorded in front a live audience at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Honest, thought provoking and profoundly moving, Sarah's story of Thomas's donation will question the way we think about life after death and the extraordinary gift of giving a dead body to science.

Human Organs are in short supply. But what if you could grow new ones in the lab? And if you donate your body parts to help others, where might they end up? That's what Sarah Gray wanted to know after making the difficult decision to donate the body of her son, Thomas, to medical science after he died from an incurable disease shortly after being born. Sarah then contacted the scientists whose research has been made possible by Thomas’ donation and discovered just how he is contributing to research which, may one day mean that organ donation is no longer necessary.
