Learning through Experience
Facing Uncertainty as a Practice: Freedom, Presence and the Patterns We Inherit

Learning through Experience

In a time marked by anxiety, division and disconnection, the path forward lies not in fixing the past but in expanding our freedom to imagine what's next. In this episode of Learning Through Experience, Dr. Heidi Brooks is joined by Suzi Tucker, a writer, teacher and pioneer of Family Constellations work. Together, they explore how our personal and ancestral stories shape the patterns we repeat—and how stepping into those patterns with curiosity can help us reorient toward hope. With warmth, wisdom and respect for the unknown, Suzi shares how facing uncertainty isn't about certainty at all—it's about accompaniment. It's about standing on the shoulders of those who came before us and choosing, even in fear, to take one generative step toward something more. Through stories of lineage, loss, and liberation, Heidi and Suzi offer listeners an invitation to slow down, pay attention and let learning emerge. “When I plant a seed, that's really all I have to do. I don't know what's going to come. That one generative step is enough.” —Suzi Tucker Learning Through Experience is produced through the Yale School of Management. Show Notes & Key Moments 03:00 – A Brother Remembered, a Path Revealed Suzi recalls how the absence of her institutionalized brother shaped her and how an encounter with Bert Hellinger—founder of Family Constellations—marked a turning point. “I decided I had a freedom my mother didn't have, and I used it. I went to meet my brother—not for him to know me, but for me to know him.” 10:16 – The Work of Freedom vs. HealingSuzi explains that her work isn't about fixing the past—it's about freeing people to move forward. “Healing is personal and beautiful, but not necessarily connected to something in the future. Freedom is.” 13:36 – Patterns, Habit and the Energy of StucknessHeidi and Suzi discuss how we get trapped in cycles inherited from our family systems—and how awareness opens space for choice. “Those places where I've done the same thing over and over again—and then I defend it, and get angry at the defense—that's when spirit gets siphoned off.” 18:00 – Group Work, Lineage and AccompanimentSuzi reflects on what emerges in her constellation workshops—and why showing up in community can be a pathway to hope. “When I look at a group of 40, I see 4 million. I'm working not just with people, but with the lineages sitting beside them.” 24:45 – Facing Uncertainty with Ancestral SupportSuzi names the emotional reality of living in uncertain times and how drawing from lineage can be a grounding force. “I call it the lethargy of despair. But then I feel my predecessors stepping in and saying, we've seen this before.” 27:29 – Writing as a Practice of PossibilityFor Suzi, writing becomes a tool to move beyond fear and uncertainty. “I'm writing my path beyond the threshold of fear.” 43:23 – Constellations and a Shift in PerspectiveConstellations offer a way to step outside the chaos and view one's story with new eyes. Heidi and Suzi discuss why representing others in a group can be transformative. “It's not about understanding the system, but knowing there is a system—and it looks different depending on where you stand.” 48:22 – Generative Endings and Ongoing UnfoldingSuzi explains that constellations don't end with solutions, but with new images that change the structure of how people move through life. “I picture my parents behind me, my brother beside me, and I walk forward. And I imagine them saying, We're so glad they didn't stay trapped in our fear.” 53:55 – Something to Sit WithHeidi closes by highlighting the invitation at the heart of this episode: not to solve uncertainty, but to meet it. “Fear is familiar. Possibility is harder to trust—but it's there. And we can take one generative step toward it.” Resources Suzi Tucker's website: Explore Suzi Tucker's website to learn about her upcoming retreats, workshops, and sign up for her newsletter. ‘Til Soon: Paradigm-shifting life prompts through the unique lens of Systemic Constellations, by Suzi Tucker. Through real-life examples and practical reflections, he explores how acknowledging hidden entanglements can unlock the path to personal and generational healing. Dance was a first love for Tracee Kafer, who began at 3 and went on to journey through well over 30 years of training and experience in classical and contemporary genres. She's moved though these landscapes of student, performer, nationally-ranked competitor, world-traveling teacher, NY-based choreographer, and in the last decade alone shifted passionately and purposefully to the realms of the explorer; practicing and facilitating her own ever-evolving freestyle movement methods to become untethered from genre, style, convention, and apparatus. She believes that if you can move, you can dance, and in honoring that process as a life practice, you can live in a world of personal awareness, connection, and freedom. Tracee created Finding Your Freestyle® (FYF) in 2012, a movement and lifestyle enterprise that encourages freedom in movement, expression, creativity and community. Tracee has facilitated workshops and intensives in the FYF methods internationally, and has fostered a global community of “freestylers” who regularly utilize the practices in their own movement, creative endeavors, and life. In the last 6 years, Tracee has hosted immersive movement retreats as well in New York, Sedona, San Diego, and Costa Rica. A true inspiration addict with an insatiable appetite for both the cerebral and esoteric, Tracee is currently studying to facilitate Family and Systemic Constellations, practices integrative tarot and crystal work, is Reiki-attuned, certified in HypnoConstellations™ and Floor Flow®, and is a dedicated meditator (trained in guiding with Jeff Warren), bibliophile, and graphic arts nerd. This week's guest is Kasia Urbaniak. Kasia is the founder and CEO of The Academy, a school that teaches women the foundations of power and influence.  Kasia's perspective on power is unique. Over the course of nearly 20 years, she has worked as a professional Dominatrix, practiced Taoist alchemy in one of the oldest female-led monasteries in China and obtained dozens of certifications in different disciplines, including Medical Qi Gong and Systemic Constellations. Since founding The Academy in 2013, Kasia has taught hundreds of women practical tools to step into leadership positions in their relationships, families, workplaces, and wider communities. In the episode, Kasia shares about how to break free from good girl conditioning. In her words "We need bad girls, women who ruffle feathers, shake people up." And this blew me away - when we ask for what we truly want no matter how crazy, it doesn't just benefit self or child, it benefits all of society" We talk about how to give and receive “no” and she goes in-depth on the familiar feeling for many mums, resentment. How suppressing it is the equivalent of a suicide bomber, a bit dramatic but rings true. When it finally explodes, it impacts ourselves and those around us. Her clarity around this and tools she offers for turning it around resonated strongly with me. What I really loved about speaking with Kasia on top of the entire conversation, are the simple actionable tools she shares. If you are like me and feel the world needs woman who are self-directed, strong and acting in their own best interests and not just everyone else's, this episode will leave you feeling understood, inspired and empowered. Trust me, Kasia is electrifying. She is on a mission to liberate woman from the shackles of good girl conditioning. I hope you find it helpful. Speaking From Our Hearts

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2021 31:12

On this episode Paul is joined by Natalia Blagoeva, the head of an organisation called Women Heart to Heart, an organisation that resonates with Paul, due to the female influences in his life. WomenH2H welcomes female entrepreneurs that want to contribute to making the world a better place. KEY TAKEAWAYS Women have a special role to play today in this world we live in, but there's work we need to do in order to fulfil our mission and creating a space where women meet with women, there's a special connection between women, we need each other as mentors and role models, especially in the corporate world. It's not about excluding men. In order to really tap into collective intelligence we need men and women being their authentic self, whatever the combination of male and female energy in each person. Work is very personal, it's an expression of who we are and it's a big part of our day, so when people say “it's not personal, it's business” they're saying “don't be yourself just do what we ask you to do”. The ultimate checkpoint, to achieve what we want to achieve, is to have the ability to have amazing conversations with people with the absolute opposite opinion to ours. There's too much polarization in the world and too much desire to be right. BEST MOMENTS ‘We all have male and female energy, the most important thing is that we connect our authentic self to our unique purpose.' ‘A lot of things women would naturally do, they are being told not to do from school and in work.' ‘Generally, the people who value women the least are women themselves. We put ourselves down.' ‘Intuition and inspiration are my biggest values, as well as joy, humility, wisdom and integrity.' In this episode we ask the question - "Why should we bother with a systemic approach and constellations in coaching?” Listen in to this episode if you are interested in learning more about what systemic coaching is and how systemic constellations as a technique works in practice. You will be particularly interested in this episode if you are keen to understand how other factors in your life/work might be impacting you - how you feel and how you perform at work. We talk through some examples to demonstrate how constellations work in practice and we introduce a question “What is one step for better that would free up the system?” We talk about physical constellations or ‘sculpting', which is also a very useful technique in coaching supervision, and how all sorts of things can be surfaced. In teams, we talk about the outside-in and future-back approach, using more systemic questions such as; Who does your team serve? What will they require differently from you in the future? What will you regret in two years' time not having addressed? And one of Gregor's favourite questions; When you are successful as a team, what will they (your stakeholders) be doing differently? We also explore when HR should be looking for a systemic approach from their coaches. Sarah reminds us how whiteboards on Zoom and Teams can be a great enabler and just because we can't meet physically doesn't mean that you can't work systemically with constellations. In this episode, Kasia and I discuss the following: The so-called “Good Girl Conditioning” as a consequence of a social standard: Only good girls get married, so I need to be “good!” The belief that self-attack (“oh, I'm so stupid for doing that!”) helps us correct our behavior, when it actually reinforces it. This episode, Joekub is super excited to get to spend time with an agile coaching pioneer, Michael Spayd. For those unfamiliar with Michael, it is safe to say he has either led or had a heavy hand in creating the foundations and the growth of what we consider modern day agile coaching. While we could talk to Michael for days about a plethora of interesting topics, we landed on the practice of Systemic Constellations for this podcast. What are Systemic Constellations? If you've ever done the constellation retrospective or information gathering exercise with a bunch of people in a room before.. it's kinda like that, but with crazy insightful and system changing insights that can help an organisation to adapt. We stumble into quantum-entanglement, accessing system insights from strangers and all sorts of other jedi like experiences that extend what's possible in the coaching space. Still not clear?.. that's okay we've got a whole episode to learn from the expert! In this immensely engaging conversation, I'm talking with Kasia Urbaniak, the founder and CEO of The Academy - A School of Power for Women, and author of the book Unbound: A Woman's Guide To Power. Kasia brings a truly unique approach to her work, which is teaching women the foundations of power and influence and is supporting them to step into leadership positions in their relationships, families, workplaces and wider communities. Over the course of nearly 20 years, she has worked as professional Dominatrix, practiced Taoist alchemy in one of the oldest female-led monasteries in China and obtained dozens of certifications in different disciplines, including Medical Qi Gong and Systemic Constellations. In this episode Kasia reveals some of the invisible but significant ways that ‘good girl' conditioning shows up in our life, and how this can lead to so much of a woman's energy going into physical, emotional and energetic labor in a very unconscious way. The result? Often exhaustion, frustration, feeling unseen and unacknowledged and not having rightful time to tend to passion projects and personal goals. We discuss the meaning of power, and Kasia offers very interesting insights into how woman can use their voice to respond to power imbalance and recover their sovereignty and decision making capacities. Along with many other fascinating and exciting explorations, we also talk about the pitfalls of aspiring to be selfless, and how being selfish in a way that feels good actually better equips us to see the positive impacts we desire.

Seema Agarwal is a mystic, truth-seeker, and a transformation catalyst. she cares deeply about the individual well-being and shaping of our collective consciousness.  She started her professional career as an Engineer but soon realized that her inner devotion and love towards the Divine outweighed everything. This love led her through a journey of healing, awakening, and weeding out that from her consciousness which kept her separate.  The never-ending quest for understanding life's mysteries brought her to many long spiritual journeys in India and the West, where she spent a considerable amount of time learning the different streams of wisdom – Divine Union through Yoga, Breathwork, Mantras, Systemic Constellations, Ancestral Healing, Energy Healing, Evolutionary Astrology, Human Design, and Gene Keys. At some point in her journey all the personal and collective suffering within her exploded and she became at peace with the world. Life with all its ironies has been humbling and beautiful. Her purpose of my life is love, service, and liberation. what you will hear in this podcast:   this was different than most podcast I do. a little more teachy than I usual allow but the information is so fascinating I wanted to let it happen because I truly believe she sees links to ancestral healing that we don't see.   someone that sees things others do not see that can release you from pain and suffering from places you may never have even considered possible the pivotal moment when she could no longer be an engineer the point where it was no longer ok and what it looks like even though we can love the divine anywhere, we don't? why how does this change happen? her dads death before she was born and the burden she carried the acceptable behaviour of a lost childhood repeating the pattern what happened when she served others and what happened when she wanted to do something for herself what it means to be living in a living universe? who you think you are you are and so much more the forces that influence us explained how does the transference of family constellations happen and indigenous cultures it turns more personal when seema responds and gives some other possible reasons for what I am going through in my story of my dad and how it got passed to me we try to figure it out from the place we are in, when maybe its roots are ancestral if you are new to this work, do not pull the curtain all the way up. but if you have been doing the work on yourself that you have been doing but feel stuck, work with someone who can see what you don't see, including the generational work that can free you. the release process and what a session looks like whereas some say easier said than done, with the shamanic process, it is easier done than said the healing practice of tuning into the family tree and listening to what comes I love how the practice of listening crosses generational timelines and reveals what is happening generationally until the pattern emerges. contact her to be a part of her introductory workshop hear her response to the question I ask everyone as a final question   to learn more about Seema, please go to her website: https://www.innerconstellations.com/ her work on Systemic constellations and Ancestral Healing can be seen by going to this direct link to that offering – https://www.innerconstellations.com/constellationhealingsession/   to learn more about Danny: please visit www.DanielBruceLevin.com www.TheMosaicOnline.com www.TheMosaicPodcast.com to get a copy of The Mosaic go to, https://themosaiconline.com/shop/ or get it on amazon by going to: http://a.co/dvgsgG3

Systemic Constellations and Trans-generational Trauma with Nicola Dunn

Nicola Dunn was born and raised in New Zealand and came to the UK in her early 20’s.  After following an initially conventional study path she took a sharp turn in her early 20’s and took her first step into the world of health by studying nutrition and then psychotherapy. After individual psychotherapy she studied group and family therapy which led her neatly to family constellations and a trans-generational approach. She has worked extensively in the NHS, has taught constellations for the last eleven years and more recently co-founded ‘The Constellations Academy’.  She has run Family Constellations Workshops and given talks about systemic work in the UK, Hong Kong, Canada and Europe. Europe.   Nicola is a psychotherapist and studied family constellations after having a body ‘hunch’ “There’s a great truth in the body, that if we listen to, can lead us in the right direction” Nicola’s background was in body-orientated psychotherapy and the interface between Eastern and Western approaches Constellations are systems-orientated, including biological systems. Constellations look at elements within healthy systems and seek to find coherence Systems could relate to family systems, businesses or a piece of creative work The founder was Bert Hellinger, a German philosopher and psychotherapist who died last year in his mid-90s. He was responsible for the global sp Other notable people involved in systemic constellations include Virginia Satir, Bert Hellinger was introduced to the concept by Thea Schönfelder, a German child and adolescent psychiatrist  “The magic is in the integration” Constellations is very interested in creation, starting at conception and valuing the synergy between men and women or partners Constellations are a moment of grace. There’s a possibility of new information coming in The synergy between someone coming for a session to do with something in their life that they can’t get to flow, and trans-generational trauma and history in their extended family. It’s not necessary for them to know the details of their family history Constellations are not fully understood, but there is a vast amount of experience A person can experience constellations in a group setting or ‘desk-top’ or with internal imagery Issue-holders work on their own issues, representatives stand in and represent members of the family. Representatives receive information when they stand in the room Connecting with the collective unconscious Families have the narrative about their history. This narrative is not sufficient to deal with the issue in front of the person. Things that are unfinished or uncomfortable tend not to be included. Situations in the family history include children that died early or were born out of wedlock, parents people lost in war, relatives left in a war-torn country. Grief and pain are unstandable reasons for a family to make an edited life history Listening to the gaps in the story Information comes through that helps to validate for the issue-holder Constellations can be fast-moving and gives an expanded view and experience to given an opportunity for change Standing in the family soul. Those that are more sensitive (emotionally or creatively) have a greater fine-tuning to that which is not resolved in their family soul Sometimes people try to replicate the past by their own suffering instead of walking into their individual futures.  If you honour someones’ life, fate and choices, it’s strengthening and stops the replication of entanglement “Use your own life wisely, as life is such a gift” Order matters e.g which twin was the first born Cultures that are closer to their roots have reverence for their ancestors Standing in the maternal or paternal line is a strengthening experience and a sense of being part of a continuum Addressing creative blocks with systemic constellations . What needs to be resolved in a family system to be able to continue with a creative project Regarding family businesses, the forces of family have greater strength over purely business decisions The concept of ancestral gratitude is familiar in constellations and for generations in the future Using constellations to bring people into coherence on a countrywide level Regarding the coronavirus pandemic: how rapidly we have had to change our behaviours. Giving up things that may give pleasure but aren’t for the greater good. Needing to communicate and be more caring. Society is a collection of linked, small groups. Compassion for suffering. Individual psychotherapy and constellations can work well together Using the body as an instrument of truth “The spirit is willing but the flesh is wise’, Bert Hellinger   To contact Nicola:    https://nicoladunnconstellations.com/   The Constellations Academy https://nicoladunnconstellations.com/constellations-academy/

Join astrologer Erica Jones and systemic family constellations facilitator Kirsten Love Lauzon for Conversation Two of Healing Earth in the Real Imaginal. NOTE Kirsten would like make a clarifying addendum to Part 2:In this episode, I say that the prefrontal cortex "is what separates us from non-human animals"--and that statement doesn't feel resonant with my core truth, so I want to clarify my belief. My sense is that the PFC connects us more than it separates us, for example, social intelligence is thought to depend on the PFC, but mammals without frontal lobe functioning, like dolphins, still show social behaviors so other structures in the brain must also be involved, or provide similar functioning in different species. In short, I would like to recognize that much of consciousness and the brain remain a mystery, especially when it comes to the lived experiences of other beings! In this series of conversations, we explore the topic of relational neuroscience—which is essentially the study of the impact and effect of other people’s presence on our nervous systems, well-being and development. With the work of international speaker and facilitator Sarah Peyton as our launch pad, we focus in on healing from personal and collective trauma and also explore the interconnection of other topics such as astrology, modern consciousness studies and systemic/family constellations. Our yearning to connect and belong is primal. The force that pushes and pulls one towards another is love. Unhealthy patterns from the past whether due to loss, war, abuse, deprivation or other traumas, can spread across generations and cause the heart to shut down. If left unattended, this disruption in the flow moves into the shadows and echoes through the family landscape often emerging in the present as an illness, emotional difficulties, addictions, anxiety depression, and broken relationships. With its roots in Family Sculpting, Family Systems Theory and Psychodrama and Gestalt Therapy, Family Constellations is a unique, phenomenological approach to resolving generational trauma. A kind of "living map," it provides a creative and profound way of seeing into the hidden dynamics that shape our lives and the suffering we experience. It has the potential to touch us on a deep energetic level, to find the movements necessary unblock the flow of love, to open the heart, and to reconnect with those we love past and present. This work deepens the respect for the mystery of life and the forces that shape it. Bill Mannle, LMFT is a Gestalt and Marriage & Family Therapist in private practice in Connecticut, USA. He first trained in Family Constellations between 2003-2005. He has since conducted seminars in Connecticut, New York, California, Germany, Denmark, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, and Croatia. He has led workshops in schools for both adolescents and teachers and is currently exploring Constellations as a method of supervision. http://billmannle.com
