Episode 136: Alec Bell and I talk about America's pastime...baseball. A current, hot-button topic is pitchers using illegal substances to help them grip baseballs better. We discuss "juiced" and "dead" baseballs. Why are less and less people interested in watching and/or going to a baseball game? Will the MLB ever bring back the salary cap? A good, thought-provoking conversation. Enjoy, and thanks for listening. Follow Me on Social Media! Former Army Captain and now President of US Military Baseball Juan Adriatico.
As Major League Baseball enters the postseason, the sport itself is entering uncharted waters. For the first time since 1993, there is no Professional Baseball Agreement between the MLB and it's Minor League Affiliates. However, that hasn't stopped Commissioner Rob Manfred from moving forward on his vision for MLB to control much of the sport of baseball in America. This week on Caught Listening, Christian Heimall is joined by Baseball America's Executive Editor, JJ Cooper, to discuss Manfred's goal of "One Baseball", a system that can see MLB direct much of how the sport operates from the professional level all the way down to Little League. From announcements regarding professional Partner Leagues to the reasoning behind this movement, and even how the sport of softball could be impacted; Christian and JJ dive in to what could be the future of America's favorite pastime. JJ also discusses the two separate paths baseball could be on should this vision become reality and whether or not it is good for the future of the sport. When you start adding things up, it's not looking very good for baseball right now. Sports journalist Andrew Pridgeon and I talk about the truncated 2020 season, the coronavirus risk to the players and their families, attitude of the owners and commissioner, the unrelenting blackout policies, cost of viewing packages, and number of big names dropping out. And that's just this year. What about the aging fans, lack of support for the minor leagues, professionalization of youth baseball, and endless rise in the cost and inconvenience of trying to be a baseball fan? If all this is a window into the owners' thinking, maybe we need to recognize that baseball in its current configuration is not long for this world. But does that provide an opportunity for a better model to come forth, or, even, come back? A thought-provoking episode about a beloved sport. Thoughts? Comments? Potshots? Baseball players are referred to as "The Boys of Summer," but for major leaguers Reid Schaller and Travis Herrin, their summer has been "safe at home" in Lebanon. The COVID-19 pandemic sidelined the pair, and the two pitchers have been occupying their time working out, spending time with family and friends, fishing, and golfing. Recently, Major League Baseball and the MLB player's union agreed to a 60 game season, set to begin on July 1st. Travis and Reid are both in the league's developmental affiliates, so their respective 2020 seasons are still influx. They know the call could come at any moment. In this episode of the #LovinLebanon Podcast, both hurlers talk about training during coronavirus, spending quality time with family, and what they miss most about "America's Pastime."

While there are still some stalemates regarding things such as lifting heavier and getting stronger vs. some old school practices as running long distances, a great deal of progress has been made developmentally in baseball.Lastly, the three discuss how important strength training really is for baseball players and athletes in general, the importance of failure and avoiding instant gratification and lastly, the direction the game of baseball is going in with the emergence of high velocity and extremely gifted athletes. All that and more on this episode of Muscles and Management!Timestamps:8:15- How Social Media Changed Baseball Culture12:44- Science Matters 14:42- Trickle-Up Effect of Tech in Baseball Training17:00- Trevor Bauer and His Impact on The Way We Look at Training22:45- Being Open Minded When Discussing 26:10- Dallas Braden’s Training Through His Playing Years32:07- Did Social Media CAUSE The Change of Mindset in Training?36:34- Dallas’ High School Experience 42:10- Own Your Career, and Tips for Parents Guiding Their Kids52:05- Letting Kids Fail59:50- How The Game is Evolving, and Where Will it Go From Here?1:05:05- Studying Swing Paths as a Pitcher and a Deep Dive into The Mindset of Pitching1:11:55- Final ThoughtsSupport the show (http://www.challengerstrength.com)

This episode is like a history lesson in early baseball. To hear how fragile the beginning of organized baseball was from a great granddaughter of Doc Adams, the inventor of modern baseball is amazing! Consider this--without Doc's tireless efforts to unite various regions with the same rules, field dimensions and even baseballs and bats, America's Pastime could have never materialized into anything more than a kid's game. Hear Marjorie proudly talk about her relative with keen knowledge and passion especially the effort to get Doc Adams inducted into the Hall of Fame. It's 1988 and the revolution has begun. With debut albums from Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, NWA and Eazy-E, rock is shedding its hairspray image and rap is getting ready to take over the mainstream. In MLB, a "performance-enhanced" revolution will introduce itself to America's Pastime in the form of The Bash Brothers, as sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire will lead the Oakland A's to 104 wins and its first AL pennant since 1974. Ultimately, a hobbled Kirk Gibson will provide one of the most iconic World Series moments in history and a lights-out Orel Hershiser will lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to their first championship in more than 20 years.
