This week we're going to explore one of the great mysteries of our time…THE HEALTH OF THE MALE PSYCHE. Whether you're a man or a woman, you may think you know and understand modern day MASCULINITY. But we're at a crossroads between what a traditional definition is and finding new ways to help boys and men CREATE HEALTHIER EMOTIONAL OUTCOMES. My guest, JASON WILSON, is an expert on the subject and someone you may already recognize. He is a sought-after speaker and frequently appears in a variety of news media, but perhaps is best known for a VIRAL VIDEO of him working with one of his martial arts students as that 9-year-old boy fought back tears trying to break a board during belt test. It has been viewed more than 100 million times. If you haven't seen it, FIND IT ON YOUTUBE AND WATCH IT! Jason is the founder and CEO of Yunion (pronounced union) and has spent close to 15 years training and developing more than 10,000 young adults in Metro Detroit. His IMPACT on IMPROVING the lives of young boys and men have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious President's Volunteer Service Award. This is an important discussion about a topic that's frequently overlooked, and the goal of this episode is to make you STOP AND THINK about what we can all do to IMPROVE the mental health of young men everywhere. Jason downloads TRUTH about what masculinity really is and how men need to make peace with and EMBRACE ALL OF THEIR EMOTIONS. Not only is it okay to cry and release past trauma, but it's also one of the best paths to HEALING and POSITIVE GROWTH in men of all ages. He also reveals what EMOTIONAL INCARCERATION is and how to break through suppressing feelings that can create internal conflict if left unresolved. One of the biggest CHALLENGES single moms face is trying to raise a young man when a father is no longer around. In his work, Jason has seen this time and again and that's why we spend a lot of time discussing PRACTICAL STRATEGIES that can help BUILD BRIDGES for mothers who face this reality. Listening to Jason, you will gain greater INSIGHTS to all human relationships. He will help you adjust your thinking so you can find greater LOVE and PEACE in your own life through better interactions with others.

Welcome to the "This is Gonna Hurt" podcast. In this episode, we begin our Prayers of Christmas series. Our first sermon in that series is "Prayer is About Magnifying the Lord". The notes can be found below. Thanks for listening. Big Idea: Prayer is About Magnifying the Lord Magnify God by Thanking Him for His Impact on Your Life Magnify God by Praying for His Impact on this World Magnify God by Praying for His Impact on His People Context Luke 1.39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” Magnify God by Thanking Him for His Impact in Your Life 46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. Magnify God by Praying for His Impact on this World 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. Magnify God by Praying for His Impact on His People 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” 56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. Big Idea: Prayer is About Magnifying the Lord Magnify God by Thanking Him for His Impact on Your Life Magnify God by Praying for His Impact on this World Magnify God by Praying for His Impact on His People Truth: Prayer is about magnifying God’s work in your life, in the church, and in the world. Application: Live knowing that magnifying what God is doing creates intimacy between you and God. Action: Prayer Goal for the Week: Focus your prayers on what God is doing for His glory and less on what you want Him to do for you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thisisgonnahurt/support

What is an up to date and affordable resource for the study of the Catholic heritage? The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church has been for many years my go to resource when studying the vast history of the Christian tradition. The book is an excellent place to begin one’s investigation into the sources of the Catholic tradition.   Catholic readers should note that the volume was assembled by many members of the Church of England. As a result, some of the entries skew toward Protestant perspectives or are oriented toward the larger narratives of the Protestant Reformation. Nevertheless, for the price and for the accessibility to first rate scholarship on many people, movements and doctrines in the history of the Christian tradition, one would be hard pressed to find a better resource.   To obtain the most affordable and the most up to date version of this work, please use the following link: https://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Christian-Church-F-Cross/dp/1598562509/. Note well, that the Catholic Heritage, LLC, makes no money if you purchase from this link. What did Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli have to say about the Eucharist? In this episode, we discuss some of the major outcomes of the famous debate between Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli held in the city of Marburg (1529). We note that Luther was a fierce proponent of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharistic elements of bread and wine. Zwingli, however, was a staunch supporter of the symbolic nature of the Eucharist. This episode is part of our larger series on Protestant Agreements and Differences. The goal of these episode is to help Catholic Christians better understand what unites and divides Protestant Christians. The larger goal of this series is to help Catholics better understand that the differences between Protestant denominations touch the key beliefs of Protestantism as a whole, namely, salvation by faith alone and the sole authority of Scripture. Join us this week as we discuss how these two major thinkers in the early Reformation viewed the Eucharist and its bearing on salvation.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode133 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. What is the best way to address historical objections to Christianity as a whole and Catholicism in particular? In this episode we talk about the importance of asking important questions of the one posing the objection. We note that any worthwhile historical investigation into any question will take time. Usually, people who raise these types of questions have not taken the time to investigate the matter in the primary sources. Instead, they rely exclusively on secondary sources, that is, popular books, magazines or online videos. Join us this week as we begin this new series of addressing historical objections to Christianity.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode132 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. Down through the centuries, Catholic authors have engaged in a long conversation over the Life Questions. An integral aspect to the ways Catholics have answered these questions was to tap into the efforts of previous generations of Catholic Christians who likewise engaged the Life Questions.  Early catholic authors such as Origen, Augustine and Jerome made extensive use of earlier Catholic authors in their efforts to engage the records of the Christian tradition. They believed that the answers to the Life Questions were to be found in the Christian tradition and not apart from it. To determine the answers to these questions, they believed, the Catholic would do well to consult the labors of earlier Catholic thinkers. By building upon their efforts, correcting their mistakes and preserving their contributions, they maintained, the Catholic intellectual could come to a more precise understanding of the Christian faith. Join us this week as we discuss how Catholic authors drew upon earlier contributions.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode128   The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. Recent English-speaking Catholic critics have adopted Gnostic approaches when evaluating the words and actions of Pope Francis and the bishops of the Catholic Church. In this episode, we talk about the use of radical skepticism and even hostility used by certain Catholic critics in their efforts to discredit the papacy of Pope Francis. Instead of finding truth within the episcopate, these critics point to themselves as the repositories of truth. They also assume that their understanding of the Catholic faith is indeed correct. Join us this week as we explain how this style of criticism resemble ancient Gnostic approaches toward the bishops of the Catholic Church.     To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode123   The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. One of the important things Catholic Christians must understand is the differences of religious beliefs held among Protestant Christians. All too often and in various ways, Catholics are mistakenly led to think that Protestant Christians are united in their two core Reformation convictions concerning salvation by faith alone and the authority of Scripture alone. To gain a better understanding of Protestantism, however, it is imperative for Catholics to recognize the important differences between the various founders of the various Protestant Christian denominations and their later followers. In this episode, views concerning baptismal justification set forth by John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Methodism was originally a seventeenth-century parachurch movement in the Church of England, which after Wesley’s death became a distinct Christian denomination in England. In this show, we discuss how John Wesley understood the relationship between baptism and the Christian’s right standing before God, a concept which falls under the category of justification. Join us this week as we draw critical distinctions between John Wesley and leaders of other Protestant denominations.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode120 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. How does one better study the Catholic heritage? One key component to any study of the Catholic heritage is the need to keep asking questions. Whenever we engage the artifacts of the Catholic heritage, we must ask as many questions as possible. We need to ask such questions as: what are the primary and secondary sources which address this question? What is the quality of the sources? Are they reliable? Are there complimentary sources which help shed further light on this question? Are the sources consistent in presenting historical facts? These and many others such questions can and should be asked whenever we look at the primary and secondary sources of the Catholic heritage.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode119 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. The Relationship between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era - CHS 117

Catholic Heritage Show w/ Dr. Erik Estrada

What is the relationship between the Middle Ages (ca. 600-1500) and the Early Modern Era (ca. 1500-1700)? In this episode, we review this relationship between these two important eras of history for the Catholic Church. We note the general observation made by medievalists and early modern historians such as Heiko Obermann, David Steinmetz and others who have argued that a knowledge of the Late Middle Ages (i.e., 1300-1500) is indispensable for a clear comprehension of the Early Modern Era. In most histories of the sixteenth century, scholars now devote an introductory chapter or two to the Late Middle Ages as the backdrop for understanding the religious events of that period. Join us this week, as we discuss the importance of understanding the medieval context for the Reformations of the sixteenth century.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode117 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. What is a secondary source? In this episode, we talk about secondary sources and how to think about them in relation to the primary sources. We note that secondary sources are the comments of scholars and non-scholars alike on the primary sources. The primary sources, as we note, are the artifacts of the past, both distant and recent, written and non-written. How did Thomas Aquinas (ca. 1225-1274) study the Bible? In this our second episode of a two-part series on Aquinas we argue that the angelic doctor paid careful attention to the various facets of the biblical text as well as its commentarial tradition. What earlier Christian authors said about the Bible, Aquinas believed, was worthy of careful consideration. Join us this week as we continue our look at Aquinas’ grappling with the biblical text.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode115 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors.
