IN THE BEDROOM, the 2001 Oscar nominated motion picture, was given praise by movie critic Roger Ebert as the best film he had seen at Sundance. It is a family drama, but it also is much more than that. Generational, getting old, losing a loved one, and seeing the end of a family line. The movie was ground breaking in many ways and has become a classic. From IMDB: A New England couple's college-aged son dates an older woman who has two small children and an unwelcome ex-husband.The film was directed by Todd Field who also acts. He co-wrote the script with Robert Festinger based off the story KILLINGS by Andre Dubus. The cast is filled with big names including Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, Marisa Tomei, Nick Stahl, and William Mapother. It received fabulous reviews and earned over $40M USD at the box office. Your co-hosts take a look at this classic film and give their thoughts.

“Well, this is not ‘mission: difficult', Mr. Hunt. This is ‘mission: impossible.' ‘Difficult' should be a walk in the park for you.”Hunt's Back for Love, Doves, and Viruses!Returning for a sequel to their hit, Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner decided to explore the franchise with a different director – something they'd continue doing for the first five films. For this, they went with Hong Kong action filmmaker John Woo. Known for his over-the-top action set pieces, his use of slow motion, and his use of doves, it may seem a bit of a surprise that what Woo really wanted to inject this sequel with was romance. But is that where the film goes wrong? Or did it have issues even without the love story? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our ‘Mission: Impossible' series with a conversation about Woo's 2000 film Mission: Impossible 2.Here's a hint at what we talk about. While it may seem natural to hire John Woo to direct a Mission: Impossible movie, it's quite a surprise that this is the worst of the franchise. Woo's filmmaking style doesn't seem to fit. It feels like it's a different universe than where the rest of the franchise takes place. But is that strictly Woo's fault? Was it partially the story put together by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga? Or the final script written by Robert Towne? It's hard to say, but the romance Woo wanted to inject into the story certainly doesn't help. And that's one of our primary complaints. Nya, as played by Thandiwe Newton, could be an interesting expert thief character but they drop that angle instantly and restrict her to love interest and pawn. Plus, by the time we get to the end of the film, they completely bail on Nya as a potential threat to humanity with the virus she's carrying. No wonder Newton had such a miserable time making this movie. But there's also the angle of the virus and antidote. It seems very James Bond villain-esque, but even there it's less about threatening the world and more about making a little money. Maybe it's because we struggle with Dougray Scott as the villain, or the fact that his relationship with Newton's Nya seems less likely than a possible gay relationship with his right hand man played by Richard Roxburgh. Cruise does start his crazy stunts here with the wire work as he's doing the free solo climb. His later stunts and action set pieces aren't too bad, but they never feel great. It has its moments, but this film just never feels like it's doing what it needs to be doing. Still, it makes for a fantastic conversation. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Willam Mapother (Lost, On Sacred Ground) headlines this Romanian tale about a story-less man who hopes his tale will end happily ever after!
The filmmaker GIa Coppola makes her first appearance. She is one of 7 directors on a new experimental anthology film called "The Seven Faces of Jane." Also, actor William Mapother stops by to discuss a new dramatic feature he acts in and has also produced called "On Sacred Ground." Both films open in select theaters and on demand on Friday, January 13th.
This episode, I talk REBECCA and JOSH TICKELL ("Kiss the Ground") and WILLIAM MAPOTHER ("Lost") about their powerful new environmental thriller, "ON SACRED GROUND." Josh and Rebecca directed the film and William stars in this drama, which is inspired by real events surrounding the 2016 protests over the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock Reservation. Josh and Rebecca are veteran documentary filmmakers but this is their first narrative feature. We discuss the pressure they faced and why they chose to make this story their first scripted film. "On Standing Ground" is inspired by Josh's actual experiences at Standing Rock and follows the colliding paths of a journalist (Mapother) searching for the truth and an oil man (David Arquette) determined to get the pipeline built and oil flowing. Amy Smart also stars. Check out the trailer and website below and see the film in theaters or on demand now. It's been a star-studded week for Team Strange Fruit! We spent some time recently on the red carpet at the 2nd Annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards, where we got to chat with celebrities and honorees about the Champ's civil rights legacy. Ali famously refused service in the US Army when he was drafted during the Vietnam War, claiming conscientious objector status. The Army denied his claim, and Ali was found guilty of refusing induction, stripped of his World Boxing Association Championship title, and banned from the sport for nearly four years—at what would seem to be the peak of his athletic career. This week on the show you'll hear us check in with Susan Sarandon, who was honored with the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award for Global Citizenship. She pointed out the significance of Ali's actions. "You just do not see celebrities or athletes putting themselves on the line the way that he did," she explained. "If you look at the context in which he came forward, it was so heavy and so brave of him to take the stance that he did, when the country was on fire with so much racism, and the Vietnam War was so divisive." We also chatted with The Today Show's Matt Lauer, and were completely charmed by Kid President. (We didn't have room for all our red carpet interviews in the main show this week, so keep an eye on our soundcloud, where we'll be posting interviews with Holly Robinson Peet, Jim Brown, William Mapother, and more, as bonus fruit!) For our feature interview, we speak to the Electric Lady herself, Miss Janelle Monáe, who was in Louisville for the Idea Festival. She and some of of her compatriots from the Wondaland Arts Society spoke to a group of young people in a session devoted to improving the world by the year 2035. She has famously avoided questions about her sexual orientation, preferring instead to eschew labels. We caught up with her in the green room before her presentation, and asked her why. "First of all, I think it's boring," she said. "Although I wear black and white, I know that my life is not black and white. We're complex beings." She also explained her use of alter-ego Cindi Mayweather as a metaphor for oppressed peoples, and gave us one of our favorite quotes ever, on the subject of women: "We come in peace, but we mean business." And finally, for this week's Juicy Fruit, we were joined in the Strange Fruit Studios by the WWE star Damien Sandow (That's his character name, but he graciously started off the segment with, "I'm off today, so you can call me Aaron if you want."). We asked for his take on the recent attention on athletes and domestic violence. "When you're on television, when you play for a sports team, you're gonna have people—especially children—that look up to you, whether you like it or not. And that is a responsibility, in my opinion." Speaking of children, Aaron spends a lot of his time in schools, talking with kids about making good choices and helping each other. He was also at the Ali Awards and made a donation to the center after attending. "It's a history lesson," he says about the center. "And also it's a testament to the man. And that man has inspired so many people." We know the phrase "gentle giant" is clichéd, but it does come to mind when you meet Aaron—at least outside the ring. We're glad he's making Louisville his home, and can't wait to see what he might do next!
Actor and Louisville native William Mapother has appeared in the films Born on the Fourth of July, and Magnolia, done extensive theater work, and was in the cast of the TV show Lost.
Every year at the Sundance Film Festival since 2003, an Alfred P. Sloan Prize has been given to a feature film that centers on science or technology, or depicts a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character. This year, the award was given to "Another Earth," a Fox Searchlight film which, despite a sci-fi sub-plot, is more about psychology and metaphysics than science and technology. Yet, the film is no less brilliant than to deserve the award it has snapped up. The fortune of a MIT student candidate named Rhoda suddenly takes a downturn when she crashes into a stopped car and kills the wife and child of a music composer named John. Four years in prison aren't enough for Rhoda to rid herself of her sense of guilt. But when she gets out of jail and approaches sorrow-stricken John, she finds it hard to articulate an apology. So every week, Rhoda comes to take care of John's house to try to make his life better. Gradually, a special feeling develops between the guilt and sorrow-laden duo, until one day the opportunity presents itself for Rhoda to confess her mistake to John. There is a sub-plot that helped the film win the award and makes it metaphysical. On the night of Rhoda's accident, she is looking out of her car window at another earth that appears within visible proximity. Later it is discovered that the planet is the identical twin of Rhoda's planet, and both start to change from the moment they discover each other. This means that there are another Rhoda and John living on the other earth where it is possible that the horrible accident may not have occurred. This possibility proves to be a glimmer of hope to Rhoda and John who have every reason to believe that if they can somehow escape to the other planet, they will live a happier life. But they also would have to face another version of themselves. The film not only tosses around some difficult questions, but also ventures to provide answers. It implies that humans confront themselves every day, and if they are able to find tranquility from within, they don't need to search for a way to a better world. To convey such a notion in a film could be quite a challenge for a director, but somehow young Mike Cahill has done a pretty good job with the help of the lead actors. During the melancholic silence that prevails throughout the first half of the film, Brit Marling and William Mapother portray guilt and sorrow incarnate. In the second half, viewers perceive a rekindled longing for new life on the part of John, while Rhoda's face still spells infliction – for the guilt she continues to experience and for holding back the truth from John. "Another Earth" is about how two individuals confront themselves and recover from past misery. The story is creative and thought provoking, while the director and actors have done it justice with their skills. On a scale from one to ten, I give this film a SEVEN.
