On today's episode, an interview at the end of a TV show: A Murder At The End Of The World. That's right, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij are with us, breaking down every detail of their phenomenal techno-thriller whodunnit, which reached its breathtaking conclusion last night. As we've come to expect from the creators of head-spinning drama The OA – which felt like the signalling of a bold new era of ambitious narrative television when it hit screens in 2016 – A Murder At The End Of The World was a triumph of both ideas and emotion. Few filmmakers today combine both as seamlessly and elegantly as Brit and Zal, whose latest show offered meditations on the following: artificial intelligence, online misogyny, the desensitisation in our culture around violence towards women, extreme wealth, climate crisis, the deification of tech company CEOs… the list goes on. The fact that A Murder At The End Of The World can so smartly probe all those topics without ever toppling in on itself like a house of cards in an Icelandic snow storm is an incredible feat. The fact that all those big intellectual ideas never overshadow the emotion of the show – the journey we go on Emma Corin's courageous hacker Darby Hart – is even rarer. Darby's story, zigzagging across three different periods of her life, is the heartbeat of this tale, about a group of high-achievers and industry leaders invited to a mysterious retreat among the frozen fjords of the Fljot Valley. The aim of this gathering? To solve the challenges facing humanity, its tech billionaire host Andy Ronson explains. A slight snag in that plan emerges, though, when one by one, guests begin to be bumped off in terrifying ways. Only Darby can solve the mystery of the killer's identity. In the conversation you're about to hear, Zal and Brit discuss philosophies behind the show, the world war origins of the whodunit genre, the ethical way to approach violence against women on screen without perpetuating that violence in the real world, and of course, the revelations of the show's final episode. As ever, this is a spoiler-filled interview, so if you haven't watched A Murder At The End Of The World in full, please be sure to catch up before tuning in.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Tot slot keken Thijs en Anke allebei naar de misdaadserie A Murder at the End of the World (40:17) op Disney+. Brit Marling is an inspiration. The talented multi-hypenate became an indie darling in 2011 with “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice”—collaborations with Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij respectively. She avoided various vapid roles and unfulfilling career paths and instead went on to star in (and co-create with Batmanglii) the hit Netflix series “The OA,” which was bafflingly cancelled after two seasons, despite a rabid and large fan base. The two are back with another series, “A Murder At The End of The World”—a cool Zoomer detective whodunit set in a remote super-hotel in Iceland. On this episode, she talks about how knowing she will have to play a character affects the writing process, the “shared loneliness” of collaboration, using AI as a story element before the world even knew it existed, why she has to hold on to her character during the editing process, the cosmic concoction she uses to make her ideas grow, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

For more than a decade, actor and writer Brit Marling has made futuristic work that reveals truths about our disquieting present. Her latest endeavor, A Murder At the End of the World, is no exception. We recently sat with Marling in front of a live audience as part of this year's On Air Fest LA Annex, where we discussed her excellent new show on FX (8:34), the role artificial intelligence may play in the future of filmmaking (14:26), and where she first fell in love with science fiction (20:35). Then, Brit reflects on her winding path at Goldman Sachs and Georgetown (23:40), where she met longtime collaborators Zal Batmanglij and Mike Cahill (25:25) that would eventually result in films like Another Earth and Sound of My Voice (36:18). On the back-half, we speak on the power of collective action (41:30), the public outcry that followed the cancellation of The OA (45:15), the state of Hollywood (51:12), and why Brit was inspired to direct (57:00) upon finding a passage from the late Polish auteur, Krzysztof Kieślowski (57:35). You can listen to our 2019 conversation with Marling here. The OA - Part 1, Chapter 8: Invisible Self

Le Film

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2022 142:35

"They said it would be invisible. Like jumping into an invisible current that just carries you away." The conclusion to The OA's story ends here. Or does it? OA concludes her story to the Crestwood Five before being discovered. Consequently, she gets relocated to a hotel where she gives closure to Nancy and Abel, while the boys and BBA put the pieces of her story together in order to get a clearer picture of it all. Meanwhile, OA gets one final premonition that will propel her to do something she's never done.  The OA's season one finale, "Invisible Self" was absolutely bone-chilling, as it leaves you shaken to the core. When it nears its end, we can only imagine what goes through everyone's minds: shock, awe, or laughter even. What happens in the final minutes of the show has been undoubtedly met with a polarizing reaction that goes from eerily beautiful to "unfortunate bang" and "imperfect feeling" by some. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij do not appear to be phased by the critics. Marling states, "What I feel is that your job as a storyteller just to, in that moment as best as you know how, try to tell a legible story. And each time, hopefully get a little bit better at making it legible, and the response is up to the audience. I feel all responses are fair game. Some of the things that have moved me the most in the world are things that other people have not been moved by at all." Batmanglij has a similar sentiment, "But I think people laughing at it and stuff, that's good. That's part of it." He goes on to elaborate that anything unique or otherworldly would cause someone to laugh. He goes on to say, "I think anything truly different, it doesn't just cause awe, and I think a lot of people feel awe when they see the movements — but probably just as many people feel the giggle inside of them and I think that's OK. I don't think there's any specific way to feel." It's wonderful to know that no matter the reaction people have voiced about the finale and the movements, Brit and Zal are open to any and all criticisms, and they're facing it head on with their heads held high.  After the credits roll, we go from questioning and discovering what is reality and what is fiction, and where do we take it from there? Since chapter 1, we've been on a journey to uncover what it really means to find your invisible self. Would you say you've found it, or is this just the beginning? There are so many questions and such few answers, but we're so happy that we've found a following that's willing to go on this journey with us. "To exist is to survive unfair choices." In part 1, chapter 4's The OA "Away", we are given more details as to what's going on during Hap's experiments, OA returns from her second NDE and makes a difficult choice that will steer the group's purpose in a new direction, while Homer is determined to recount the deadly experiments being done to him.  According to KPCC's The Frame, in an interview with Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, Batmanglij explains the incredibly real drowning sequences, "that's a real apparatus that we designed. That's not CG. That's real. So Brit really held her breath." He continues by saying, "I think we watch movies and stories on TV and we think that these things are completely fictions, but they're not. The actors have to really go through a lot of these emotional spaces to experience them." Brit Marling adds, "I think also there's something about this story that felt like, in order to touch the heights and the light that it wanted to touch, you have to go with this young woman who has survived a great deal and touch the very center of the dark with her." We're finally at the halfway point of part 1, and we hope you enjoyed this episode's recap and reaction by @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy. How did we feel about the group of people on the run from the law in this movie? Are they environmental terrorists or noble revolutionaries? What does The East have to say about the efficacy of targeting individuals vs. targeting the system that encourages those individuals to thrive?

JENNIFER GLYNN is a film and commercial producer. She's had her hand in many indie films, including one of my favorites, SOUND OF MY VOICE written by and starring my girl crush, Brit Marling. We gush over how Brit was destined for greatness. A practical nuts and bolts producer, she explains why the UPM and line producer roles are often confused on smaller projects. This particularly chat was recorded in October of 2018, so you may notice that I was still learning to not talk over people....Rough to hear, y'all, but such is life with caca. Gotta show you the progress! This week, we discuss knowing and owning your financial worth, the main differences between making commercials and films, and creating loyalty in Hollywood. Oh, there will not be an episode next week because I'll be at Sundance the premiere of my film, SYLVIE'S LOVE starring Tessa Thompson. Glad you're here and can't wait to hear your thoughts on my chat with Jennifer! She has since produced and line produced multiple award-winning films. One of her early credits also happens to be one of my favorite films, Zal Batmanglij’s SOUND OF MY VOICE, written by and starring Brit Marling. Speaking of Brit, who also created the short lived THE OA for Netflix, (Yes, I’m still bitter about the cancellation!), we gush over our mutual admiration for her. It's impressive and inspiring that she taught herself writing, created roles not being written for women, and carved out her own path. Since then, she has co-produced Neil LaBute’s SOME GIRLS starring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell which premiered at the 2013 SXSW Festival. She also produced BURN COUNTRY starring Dominic Rains, Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo, and James Franco. Additionally, she wrote and directed the short SMORGASBORD starring Academy Award Winner Brie Larson and Sarah Ramos as part of the prestigious American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women. Jennifer has also produced a number of commercials, music videos, short films and digital campaigns. We compare short form vs long form content, and why she prefers commercials. She also does a great job of breaking down why the UPM and line producer roles are often confused on smaller projects. We explore finding and owning your financial worth in the marketplace. We commiserate on feeling stuck and the lack of loyalty that sometimes exists in Hollywood.

On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' podcast, Jocelyn & Graham are joined by John Allison, a friend and listener who suggested we watch and make an episode about Netflix's Original Series "The OA." After binge-watching both seasons of the show, host and co-host Graham & Jocelyn felt they would need help to break down one of the most complex and mind-bending series ever produced in the history of Netflix. Graham called upon John and he responded the call. We start the episode talking about the recent passing of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew who John tells us he had met on several occasions. John reminisced about how Mr. Mayhew, despite being seemingly under tremendous amount of physical discomfort due to his unusual growth, was always gentle, kind, and courteous to every fan who approached him. RIP Peter Mayhew (aka) Chewbacca! We then moved on to talking about some of the upcoming series we're excited about on the various streaming platforms, as well as some other series about which we haven't got the slightest idea of what to expect from them. Graham and Jocelyn announced the premiering of "Dead to Me" on Netflix, "Lucifer," "The Society," as well as animated series "Tuca & Bertie." Jocelyn also point out the release of "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile," a movie about notorious American serial killer Ted Bundy on Netflix, starring Zac Efron. Graham expressed interest in the HBO mini series "Chernobyl" on HBO, the return of Amazon Prime series "Sneaky Pete," starring Giovanni Ribisi. Graham brought up an apparently newly acquired series on Amazon called Whisenpoof; which none of us seemed to know what it was about, until we later realized it's animated Canadian-American series. We discussed actor Sterling K Brown's announcement a few weeks ago about joining the cast of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" (Amazon Prime), we also discussed how none of us thinks too highly about "This is Us." We then moved on to discussing our main topic of the week, Netflix Original Series "The OA," created, written, produced, and starring Brit Marling with her writing partner Zal Batmanglij.
