The Rebbe writes that when encountering spiritual laxity, one must not compromise Torah standards to make things easier. Instead, like Rav in Bavel, one should strengthen boundaries and uphold Torah values, ensuring the community remains steadfast even amid challenges. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/007/007/2079
Chazal teach that a person should not take leave of his friend through ordinary conversation, laughter, lightheadedness, or idle words, but through a dvar halacha because through that, “he remembers him.”Why are endings so spiritually powerful? Why does the Gemara specifically require halacha, not simply Torah? And why is the Gemara's example connected to Adam HaRishon, Bavel, and the palm trees of Babylonia? In this final shiur of the Tomer Devorah year, Rav Burg explores the inner meaning of goodbye. A goodbye is not merely the end of an encounter. It is a threshold, the delicate space between presence and absence, where memory is formed and meaning is encoded. When we part from another person, we can escape the vulnerability of the moment through joking, distraction, or empty chatter. Or we can leave them with something life-giving. A dvar halacha is Torah that becomes movement, a path forward. It says: I may be leaving, but I am not leaving you empty.Through the image of the palm tree, Chazal reveal the secret of healthy attachment: even when branches spread outward, there remains one heart. Even in Bavel, the place of exile, confusion, and fragmentation, there can still be inner unity.True connection does not create dependency. It helps another person internalize light, direction, and strength. And sometimes, the people we meet awaken Torah within us that we did not even know we were carrying.
Birkat Chatanim | More (or perhaps less) Than You Thought... by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom We are all familiar with ברכת חתנים, although generally in its more common referent - "Sheva Berakhot". We examine the sources and the divided practice of Bavel vs. Eretz Yisrael regarding how many Berakhot are said - and propose an explanation for the need for "Panim Chadashot" (a "new face" at the celebration) which is required to justify re-reciting these Berakhot at a feast given to honor the new couple. This shiur was lovingly given in honor of the forthcoming marriage of our son, Kovy to his בחירת לב, Zoe. May their lives always be filled with שפע ברכות...seven times over. Source sheet >>

And if you don't tell another Jew the whole truth, then later when someone does, and that Jew is awakened and transformed, he may come back to you with a complaint for not having told him earlier…Ahavas Yisroel requires drawing every Jew near, without conceding even the slightest detail. As the Gemara relates about Rav who, upon arriving in Bavel, “found an open area” (a lack of observance with regard to meat and milk, eruvin, and using a tree on Shabbos), “and he fenced it in” (Rashi: “he imposed stringencies upon them in order to make a safeguard and distance them from sin, like a person who fences in a breached field to protect it.”). And in was precisely in this way that Bavel become a place of Torah, to the extent that “the halachah follows Bavli.” The lesson is that when one encounters a breach, an area in Torah in which the generation isn't careful, the correct approach is not to relinquish any aspect of Yiddishkeit, but on the contrary, to “fence it in” by adding additional stringencies. Even if at first people won't be happy about it, nevertheless, since this is Hashem's will as set forth in the Torah whose “ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace,” this is the true expression of Ahavas Yisroel, and in the end they will thank him for it.Excerpt from sichah of 19 Kislev 5735 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-04-2026 לע"נ מרת מלכה רייזל בת הרה"ח ר' מרדכי דובער ע"ה ראזענפעלד ליום היארצייט שלה ח' אייר. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

In maart 2026 verscheen De trias economica – economie zonder verborgen impact.. Laten we beginnen… 38:00 Kapitalisme is trickle-up. Daar moeten we vanaf. Laten we beginnen. Engels is heel erg ingewikkeld. Engels neemt elkaar. Scenario. Waar heel veel informatie in staat. In Amsterdam.

Thank you for your partnership in expanding our Jewish programming! In this episode on Ta'anit 23b, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the legacy of Choni HaMe'agel through his grandson Chanon HaNechba (Hanan the Hidden). When the world needed rain, the Sages sent schoolchildren to grasp Chanon's garments and cry, "Father, give us rain!" Chanon would turn to Hashem, pleading for rain "for these children who don't distinguish between a father who gives rain and one who doesn't." The Gemara explains his name "HaNechba" (the Hidden) from his habit of concealing himself even in the privy out of extreme modesty. The discussion contrasts the prayer styles of Eretz Yisrael's tzaddikim (e.g., Rebbi Yonah, father of Rebbi Mani) with those of Bavel. The former prayed privately and humbly (e.g., Rebbi Yonah hiding his prayers behind excuses like buying grain during drought, standing in deep places to fulfill "From the depths I call You, Hashem"), leading to immediate rain. Rebbi Mani's prayers were so powerful that even graveside supplications (e.g., against harassers from the Nasi's court) caused miracles (horses' legs rooting in place until the harassers relented). The Gemara relates astonishing stories of Rebbi Yitzchak ben Yashiv's decrees (making the rich poor then rich again, making Chana beautiful then plain), and Rebbi Yosef ben Yuchras' extreme exactness (his donkey refusing to move if over/underpaid; his harsh words causing his children's fates—his son dying young after praying for out-of-season figs, his daughter losing beauty after causing men to sin by gazing at her). These illustrate the immense power—and danger—of righteous prayer and words, the importance of humility/modesty in prayer, and how tzaddikim's words can alter reality (measure for measure).Rabbi Wolbe draws lessons on humility in prayer (recognizing our limitations before Hashem), the power of sincere, childlike pleas, avoiding negative speech (never "open your mouth to the Satan"), and the exacting nature of some tzaddikim vs. merciful approaches (e.g., Avraham Avinu). He emphasizes prayer as acknowledging Hashem's unlimited power and our dependence, urging caution with words due to their creative/destructive potential._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. The wondrous lesson for those involved in work on behalf of the community (or generally the path of Zevulun) is that as long as they have a directive from the Nasi HaDor, they must continue this work and not flee from the frontlines; they should carry out their mission with kabolas ol, carrying out their mission as part of Hashem's army. But at the same time, they must feel the utmost longing for the time when they will be able to sit and learn Torah constantly and diligently. Accordingly, the moment one feels – or receives a clear directive –that his mission is complete, he should “go up from Bavel” (and even before then, he should utilize every free moment for Torah study).3 excerpts from sichah of Motzaei Shabbos Parashas Shemini 5738 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=20-02-2026
Asara B'Teves marks the day Nevuchadnezar, King of Bavel, laid siege to Yerushalayim — the beginning of the Churban. But on this very same day is the yahrtzeit of Reb Nosson of Breslov (December 20, 1844), the primary talmid of Rebbe Nachman, the one who revealed and transmitted Rebbe Nachman's redemptive Torah to the world. This is no coincidence. In this shiur, we explore the deep contrast and connection between the beginning of destruction and the beginning of geulah. Rebbe Nachman taught that his Torah is the “beginning of redemption,” and Reb Nosson embodied that message—especially on a day that represents siege, darkness, and concealment. We examine how the siege of Bavel continues today—not only through the outside world of sheker, confusion, and distraction, but through the inner siege of the yetzer hara, which tries to define us by externals, past failures, and despair.Through Breslov teachings, we uncover the nekuda tova—the inner point within every Jew that is untouchable by sin, untouched by exile, and always connected to Hashem.Asara B'Teves is not only about mourning the past—it's about discovering where redemption truly begins.#AsaraBTeves #Breslov #RebbeNachman #RebNosson #Geulah #Churban #JewishTorah #InnerAvodah #NekudaTova #YetzerHara #Emunah #Redemption #TorahThoughts
משיחת עשרה בטבת – יהפך לשמחה – ה'תשמ"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-12-2025 Synopsis The Rambam states at the beginning of the Laws of Fasts that the purpose of a fast day is for a person to recognize that the events commemorated by the fast day are not a “chance occurrence” etc.; especially the 10th of Teves, when “the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim,” marking the beginning of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash etc. Ultimately, these events are for the benefit of the Jewish people, to arouse them to do teshuvah and correct whatever needs to be corrected etc. – a “descent for the sake of ascent.” Therefore, it is understood that on a day like this, one should not fall into despair or sadness, chas v'shalom, over the frightening downfall that began specifically on the tenth day of the tenth month (whereas the verse states, “the tenth shall be holy”). On the contrary, a person should feel bitterness and be moved to teshuvah motivated by love, to undo the cause of the exile. This approach will strengthen one's hope for the Redemption, at which time “I will show them wonders” – “the advantage of light from the darkness.” Especially since we have already davened Minchah and we are in a holy place etc. In addition to contemplating the reason for the fast, one should increase in Torah, service, and acts of kindness.Excerpt from sichah of 10 Teves 5741 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-12-2025
שיחת יום ב', ט' טבת ה'תשנ"ב ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=29-12-2025 Synopsis The fast of Asarah B'Teves is more severe than the other fast days instituted by the Sages in that, if it were to fall on Shabbos (although according to the fixed calendar it cannot), we would fast even on Shabbos. The reason this fast day is particularly severe is because “On this very day the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim” – this marked the beginning and opening of the subsequent events that led to the other fast days. The reason the destruction did not happen all at once was to give the Jewish people time to do teshuvah, and thereby prevent the destruction from taking place. The lesson is that one should utilize the remaining time before the fast begins to do teshuvah, which has the power to bring about the true and complete Redemption literally, thus nullifying the fast. May it be Hashem's will that the act of appointing everyone here as a shliach for the mitzvah of tzedakah should awaken within them a proper “thought of teshuvah” etc.Excerpt from sichah of Monday, 9 Teves, 5752 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=29-12-2025

The Rage and Age of Gog and Magog Let's start with our familiar text: Awake, O north wind, And come, wind of the south; Make my garden breathe out fragrance, Let its spices be wafted abroad. May my beloved come into his garden And eat its choice fruits!” (So 4:16) This call to “Awake, O North” is thought to encompass three distinct calls recorded in 1. Jeremiah 31:7-8 (exiles of Israel), 2. Isaiah 41:25 (Messiah) 3. Gog and Magog (Ezek 38:2) Why are all three being called to "Awake" simultaneously? To awake in Scripture can have a few connotations. The contextual explanation is that there has been a period of inactivity, and the prophetic call is to arouse each group to action. Messiah will begin to gather the exiles who have aroused from a period of spiritual apathy, and simultaneously, Gog and Magog will awaken in that generation to create the chaos and darkness necessary to awaken Israel from spiritual "sleep." Because the gematria of Gog and Magog is 70 [Gimmel-Vav-Gimmel Vav-Mem-Gimmel-Vav-Gimmel, 3+6+3+6+40+3+6+3], they are thought to represent the symbolic 70 nations of the world, which will gather against both 1. Adonai and 2. Israel. Various commentaries make oblique references to Gog and Magog, but it will not be understood fully until the day arrives. Some say it is the descendants of Amalek among the nations. Amalek, from which King Agag arose, is the murderous spirit of Edom, or Rome, the fourth beast, headed by Babylon. In that sense, Gog (chief person) and Magog (his nation, people) has arisen in every generation to provoke the Holy One and people who trust in Him and obey Him. The Scriptures cited below reiterate that Gog and Magog are not a single ruler and nation, but a wicked remnant embedded among all nations. In some generations, they will rise up with enough strength and cunning to marshal huge numbers of the population to join their murderous schemes. The pre-millennial war will bring Israel to repentance, and Adonai Himself will destroy Gog and Magog with confusion, thunder, hail, blood, and lightning (Ezek 38-39). In other words, an amalgam of Egypt and Assyria's judgments. Psalm Two is traditionally associated with Gog of Magog: Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,“Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!” He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury, saying, “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.” (Ps 2:1-6) The commentators note that in this attack of Gog, it revisits an important precedent in Babel: at the tower of Bavel, the united conspirators agreed to attack Heaven itself. As a result, YHVH confused them, and the 70 languages of the nations were born. This is the traditional location of Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue. Amalek in the Torah portion Balak is referred to "first of the nations," in other words, the first to openly rebel against Heaven itself by attacking Israel in the wilderness; this "first" attack was also the first direct attack against Heaven since the "nation of mankind" attempted to penetrate it rebelliously at the Tower of Bavel. At the final attack of Gog from Magog, the nations will once again undertake to assemble and attack YHVH and Messiah DIRECTLY, thinking the Holy City Jerusalem has a “Patron” who will defend it. They believe this was the wicked Amalekite Haman's fallacy, attacking the Jews first instead of their God. Something will cause them to believe they have the wherewithal to wage war directly against YHVH and King Messiah. What do Gog and Magog have to do with the third “awakening” of the winds?

The King of Bavel sends a delegation to find out more about the miraculous events
Rav Yosef Chaim (1835-1909), better known by his popular work Ben Ish Chai, was an important leader of the Baghdad Jewish community of the 19th century, whose influence reached across the Ottoman Empire and beyond. Having grown up in the rabbinical aristocracy of Baghdad, he succeeded his father's position in 1859, serving the Jewish community for the next half century. This was primarily through his masterful oratorical skills, which he delivered twice daily, every Shabbos and on special occasions to the entire community. He wrote tens of works on the entire gamut of Torah literature, and financed his own publication costs to have them printed in Jerusalem. He made a historic journey to the Land of Israel in 1869, and at the end of his life inspired the Calcutta based philanthropist Yosef Avraham Shalom to fund the establishment of the famed Porat Yosef yeshiva. His innovative halachic methodology influences the world of Sephardic psak until today. A story is brought of Nahum ish Gamzu and how he is saved from death by the Romans on account of magical dirt that came from the dirt that Avraham used against the four kings, which magically turned into swords. What was the generation of those who built the Tower of Bavel try to accomplish? What were the acts of Sodom? God gave them everything they could want, which made them self-sufficient, leading to arrogance, which led to their isolationist policy. They mainly engaged in two categories of trangressions - not treating guests properly and perverting justice. There is a debate about Korach and his followers - whether they are deserving of the World-to-Come. The Gemara extrapolates the names of the people in Korach's group and explains how On ben Pelet didn't rejoin Korach's group on account of his wife's actions.
[Who's Who: Nachum Ish Gamzu] (He turned dirt into gold, after all!). The generation of the Tower of Bavel - and what they did so wrong that they lost their portion in the World to Come. Namely, what did they do in building that tower?! War? Idolatry? And the people of Sodom, and their terrible behavior that lost them their portion in the World to Come - specifically, how they became so inhospitable. Plus, how far they went in punishing those who were in the least bit charitable.

In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we speak with Rabbi Dr. Haym Soloveitchik—a pioneer and leader in the study of the history of Jewish law—about how halacha mediates our relationship to God in 2025.We've already spoken with Dr. Soloveitchik in our Halacha series, but a closer reading of his essential work, "Rupture and Reconstruction," demands that we explore it more deeply. In this episode we discuss:Why do Jews feel bound by the Talmud in a multicultural world? What does it mean to live in a society that increasingly learns from books and online rather than from mimetic tradition? Is a sense of security as a People a breeding ground for unnecessary social differences?Tune in to hear a conversation about how we might ensure a more vibrant environment for Jewish life to thrive in a changing world. Interview begins at 5:03.Rabbi Dr. Haym Soloveitchik graduated from the Maimonides School which his father founded in Brookline, Massachusetts, and then received his B.A. degree from Harvard College in 1958 with a major in history. After two years of postgraduate study at Harvard, he moved to Israel and began his studies toward an M.A. and PhD at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, under the historian Professor Jacob Katz. He wrote his Master's thesis on the halacha of gentile wine in medieval Germany. His doctorate, which he received in 1972, concentrated on laws of pawnbroking and usury. He is considered a pioneer and leader in the study of the history of Jewish law.References:Rupture and Reconstruction: The Transformation of Modern Orthodoxy by Haym SoloveitchikCollected Essays: Volumes I, II, and III by Haym SoloveitchikJews and the Wine Trade in Medieval Europe: Principles and Pressures by Haym SoloveitchikRabbi Joseph B. Parshas Noach, Faith Over Fear The Parsha Perspective is in honor of Eretz Yisroel. May G-d protect our brave soldiers. May G-d return all the hostages in Gaza immediately. The Parsha Perspective is in loving memory of Edward Ben Efraim, Shlomo Ben Edward, and Yirachmiel Daniel Ben Gedalia. May their souls be uplifted and their memories a blessing. Click here to listen, watch and connect! Parshaperspective.com Our Parsha introduces Noach, a man who remained steadfast in his faith in G-d while society around him descended into chaos and anarchy. G-d informed Noach that a Mabul (flood) would soon destroy all of civilization, sparing only Noach and his family, who would find safety within a Teivah, an ark he was instructed to build. Noach received detailed dimensions for the ark and was commanded to bring seven pairs of each kosher animal and a pair of each non-kosher animal. We find the intention of the Builders of the Tower of Bavel. We learn the lack of power our enemies actually have.
