An Arm and a Leg
Could this mathematician's formula fix US hospitals?

An Arm and a Leg

What do the KGB and the former CEO of Cincinnati Children's Hospital have in common? At different times, they’ve each looked to a guy named Eugene Litvak for help. He only said yes to Cincinnati — but he saved that hospital more than a hundred million dollars a year. For the last few decades, Litvak – a Soviet émigré with a PhD in math – has been on a mission: save U.S. hospitals from financial ruin, and improve the lives of doctors, nurses, and patients. He says he has just the formula to do it, lots of prominent experts agree, and he’s documented impressive results so far: Financial savings, fewer hospital-related deaths, lower staff turnover, and shorter wait times. But Litvak and his allies are still struggling to convince more hospital CEOs to try his method. We talk with Litvak about his wild life story and how he found the fix that he says could revolutionize American hospitals. And we speak with experts to determine why more hospitals don’t try it. Here’s a transcript of this episode. Send your stories and questions. Or call 724 ARM-N-LEG. Of course we’d love for you to support this show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with filmmaker, Accidental Talmudist and longtime “Jewish Journal” contributor Salvador Litvak. Litvak's Passover classic, “When Do We Eat?” stars Max Greenfield, Ben Feldman, Shiri Appleby, Lesley Ann Warren, Michael Lerner, and Jack Klugman. Litvak directed the film that he co-wrote with his wife and partner, Nina Davidovich Litvak.    The Litvaks' second movie was “Saving Lincoln.” Their new film “Guns & Moses” is out this summer.    “The perennial fifth question of the Passover Seder is, ‘When do we eat?'” Litvak, who is also the author of “Let My People Laugh: Greatest Jewish Jokes of All Time,”  says. “There's all these holiday movies… but there was no Passover movie.”    When the Litvaks made “When Do We Eat?” they were connected to Judaism, but not yet Orthodox.    “The movie's probably a little bit edgier than we would make it today,” Litvak says. “One of the main plot points is that one of the kids doses his dad with a strong hallucinogen at the Passover seder, but also the movie contains wonderful spiritual teachings.”   He adds, “[Our dream: that] it would become the Jewish, ‘It's a Wonderful Life,' the movie that people watch every year.”   Salvador Litvak shares the backstories behind “When Do We Eat?” and his new Jewish joke book. the connections between Judaism and food, and his recipe for Sal-mon. He also talks about creating The Accidental Talmudist, how that community embraced his Passover classic film aka “My Big Fat Jewish Seder.”    “My mom always used to say there's two kinds of people: those who get into conversations in the checkout line at the supermarket and those who don't,” Litvak says. “We are [the first] kind.” Today, Sean talks about putting the needs of the customer before a seller's need to close and coaching people to their strengths.Sean also discusses the thoughtful consideration of feedback and how to give and receive feedback that is based on a desire to improve rather than prescribe to others what is right. He also coaches on self-sabotage, promoting a healthy lifestyle, removing what discourages, and keeping what encourages in your life.HIGHLIGHT QUOTESLearn to like feedback to provide compassionate feedback yourself - Sean: "Over time, looking at feedback examples of my peers, looking at feedback examples in the Bible, looking at feedback examples in my personal life, I realized that I was missing the boat if I did not embrace feedback. And here's the punchline to it, allowing myself, changing myself to desire and like, dare I say, feedback, I became much better at giving people feedback in a more compassionate, kind way as opposed to just the facts, now go do it."Eliminate what discourages you to remove self-sabotage - Sean: "There's various types of self-sabotage and I'll tell you the first thing that people need to do, in my opinion, is sit down and write down everything that they read, listen to, and watch, and after you have that list, and I don't go over this in the book but this is what I've done is made a list of it and then look at it and say, okay, what here encourages me and what discourages me?" Connect with Sean and get his book:LinkedIn | Website | AmazonLearn more about Darrell and Larry: Darrell | Larry | WebsiteCheck out the Selling from the Heart EXPERIENCE Please visit WHYINSTITUTE.COMClick for your Daily Dose of InspirationGet your Insiders Group FREE PASS here
