POPULARITY
What if the most important business introduction of your life happened in a middle seat at 30,000 feet? In this episode, Carrie Waible, founder of CW and Co., shares a career that reads like a map of New York City's most iconic moments. Star-studded galas, Nobu's 20th anniversary, Donna Summer and John Legend at the Beacon Theater, Robert De Niro's charity events, and a 20-year client relationship that started with a phone call she almost said no to. None of it would have happened without a stranger on a plane named Stan Heath, a first boss named Tony who saw something in her before she did, and a client named Thomas who told a 26-year-old she should start her own company. She did. Twenty years later she is still at it and still evolving. [00:04:00] What She Does and Who She Serves Runs CW and Co., a full service marketing and production company Started in 2004 producing nonprofit galas and celebrity events in New York Has worked with some clients for 10 to 20 years [00:05:00] From Events to Full Service Marketing Was churning out 12 major events a year with a team burning out A dear team member said she didn't want this to be her life Started shifting toward full service marketing and content production [00:07:30] The Client Who Gave Her the Best Advice An old client named Charlie took her to lunch when she first started out He told her: keep putting yourself in front of people and do a good job He also said at 26: lean into your PR talents; that's what will carry you She didn't fully hear it until years later when the pivot became necessary [00:10:30] What Inspires Her: People Gets her energy entirely from people; not one cup of coffee a day Feels most present when directing videos, producing events, or in the field If she is connecting with people and doing meaningful work, she feels amazing [00:11:30] Client Impact: Nobu and a Charter School Network Helped Nobu transition from a 190-seat Tribeca restaurant to a global brand without losing its heart Helped nonprofits raise what adds up to billions of dollars over the years Spoke at a charter school career day; a student asked what inspires her; she said: you do [00:19:00] The Relationship That Started Everything: Stan Heath Was flying to New York to visit friends after graduating college Got into conversation with a stranger named Stan Heath in the middle seat He said PR was her fit; his ex-business partner Tony was hiring Stan faxed her resume; she had a meeting that same weekend [00:21:30] Tony: The First Boss Who Changed Her Life Tony offered her the job after watching her work a fashion industry event He needed to see how she moved before making the offer New York clicked immediately; she has never left That first job eventually led her back to PR and to starting her own company [00:23:00] Thomas: The Client Who Told Her to Start Her Own Business A former client told her: anywhere you go, people will just ask for Carrie Waible anyway Within weeks he offered her a live event six weeks from his nonprofit's biggest fundraiser She started the company at 26 to take on that first event That night on the event floor confirmed she had found where she belonged [00:25:30] Cathy: The Referral That Led to Robert De Niro A past client named Cathy called to pass on a piece of business she couldn't take She was stern: my reputation is on the line too; I need to know you're ready The event was a star-studded benefit at the Beacon Theater with Donna Summer and John Legend The after party was at Nobu; that relationship kept growing for five to six years [00:28:30] Raven: The 20-Year Client Relationship Her first VP at her first New York job called when Carrie started her agency Asked her to do PR for the New York Boat Show; Carrie almost said no That one job opened the door to recreational boating, now one of her biggest business streams The National Marine Manufacturers Association has been a client for 20 years [00:31:30] Venice 2021: The Trip That Cracked Everything Open Was invited to manage VIPs and heads of state at a humanitarian event in Venice Went alone with only a local assistant; no team, no safety net Realized she didn't need a multimillion-dollar agency; she needed to love the work every day From that moment she began more fully embodying her gifts and what she really wanted [00:34:30] Final Word: Just Connect People find relationship building daunting; just extend a smile, a word, a handshake Trust your gut about who feels right; the spidey sense gets sharper over time Those small connections build into things you could never have imagined KEY QUOTES "Keep putting yourself in front of people and do a good job, because no one ever wants to change who they're working with if they don't have to." - Charlie, as shared by Carrie Waible "I get my energy from people. Pearl Jam's 2008 tour was a short, but memorable run in between album releases that took them along the entirety of the U.S. East Coast. After shows at Bonnaroo, Madison Square Garden and Mansfield among many more, they finished the run by playing a benefit show at the famed Beacon Theater in New York City. The band helped raise $3 million for the Robin Hood Foundation to fight poverty within the city limits. 2,500 lucky fans were able to witness what happened on this night, help raise funds and awareness while getting a great show out of it. 2008 has a few major storylines for the band that mostly center around songs returning from long absences. This was the first time in 13 years that they brought W.M.A. to the table as a full performance, the first time in the Matt Cameron era that Who You Are was played, and it was the debut year for Lost Dog opening track, All Night. All three of these songs help define the time period, and if you happened to witness the band in New York that year, these songs were accompanied live by three local backing singers. We'll go into depth on how these songs benefitted from a different feel for the band at the time, and how the singers blended in soul with rock 'n' roll to create memorable performances. Especially of Harvest Moon. We'll also talk about Randy's first year getting a chance to see a show and how that changed the trajectory of... his life? And on Javi's side, he'll go into depth on what displeases him about the sound in this era and why he thinks it holds the band back from being able to expand their pallet. Kimmel responds on-air, and other comics (including Jimmy Fallon, Greg Gutfeld, and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog) add jokes; George Clooney comments on dangerous rhetoric, and reports mention the FCC may launch an early review of ABC's broadcast licenses. In this episode, Charles sits down with Victor Gurbo, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and guitar builder from Brooklyn, New York. Victor's musical journey began early — literally from infancy, when his father discovered that Traveling Wilburys recordings were the only thing that could calm a crying baby Victor. That early imprinting on Dylan's collaborators set the stage for a lifelong obsession with live music, particularly the work of Bob Dylan, whom Victor estimates he has seen between 20 and 30 times. The conversation opens with Victor recounting his very first concert at age nine — an Arlo Guthrie show in Martha's Vineyard — a memory that exists more in fragments than in full, including nodding off during parts of the set, only to snap back awake for "Alice's Restaurant." The episode is rich with vivid concert memories. Victor shares stories of seeing Levon Helm multiple times at the Beacon Theatre and Terminal 5, reflecting on how Helm's deep love for his audience was palpable, especially after his battle with throat cancer. Victor also recounts a bittersweet Conor Oberst show in 2008, where he got to hear a then-unreleased song that would later appear on the next album — the kind of "you were there first" moment that makes live music so irreplaceable. But perhaps the most memorable story is the infamous Jack White show at Radio City Music Hall in 2012. After losing their tickets outside the venue and spending an hour on hold with StubHub, Victor and his friend were gifted front-row seats by a compassionate employee — only to watch White cut the show short, apparently unhappy with the audience's energy. For Victor, a performer himself, the experience was deeply personal and left a lasting impression on how he thinks about the relationship between an artist and their crowd. Victor's life as a performer and craftsman are equally compelling. After ordering a custom guitar from legendary New York luthier Rick Kelly — who famously builds instruments from the reclaimed wood of demolished Manhattan buildings — and waiting four and a half years for it to arrive, Victor taught himself to build guitars in the meantime, eventually winning Best Band in Brooklyn at NPR's Battle of the Boroughs in 2013 with an instrument he made himself. Since then, the band has performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Carnegie Hall, where a mid-show equipment failure became the crowd's favorite moment of the night. Most recently, Victor released Gurbo and Company Live 2025, a live album recorded at NYC's Cafe Wha? featuring eight tracks, including covers of Bob Dylan's arrangement of "Rollin' & Tumblin'" and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." Victor can be found on all social platforms as Victor V. Gurbo, and his website has upcoming show dates and vinyl copies of his pandemic-era home recording project, Outrun the Invisible Man. Jesse Malin is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. A complete legend of NYC rock and roll, Jesse suffered a spinal stroke in 2023 and has been rehabilitating since. His songs are covered in a new tribute album with a star-studded lineup. Many of these artists will be playing the Beacon Theater in December when Malin and his band take the stage for the first time since the stroke. We talked about all of that as well as playing with the Misfits in 1981, seeing the Ramones for the first time, and so much more. Was a thrill to spend this time with Jesse. Jesse Malin is about as New York as you can get. How New York is he? Well, he's in a Martin Scorsese movie for starters. Jesse got his start in the hardcore band Heart Attack before pivoting to the rough and ready D-Generation in the ‘90s. After that band's demise, Jesse made an even harder pivot when he turned to his acoustic guitar and released the Ryan Adams-produced THE FINE ART OF SELF DESTRUCTION — in effect, reinventing himself as a rock and roll troubadour and NYC ambassador. And then about a year and a half ago, Jesse suffered a rare spinal stroke that threatened his ability to ever walk again. But in true LIFER fashion —and with the help of his community and his friends— Malin has soldiered on and is gearing up for a pair of benefit shows at the Beacon Theater on December 1st and 2nd that will mark his return to the stage. It's a pleasure to have Jesse on the show this week to put some shit into perspective for us and talk about Johnny Thunders, CBGB's, Bruce Springsteen, Ian Hunter, “Bringing Out The Dead”, Green Day, Rickie Lee Jones and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with The Clash. The future is unwritten, everybody!

My guest today is Brian Cockerham. Brian is a gifted bass player, most notably laying down the soulful low notes for the incredible Shayna Steele and multi-Grammy Award winning artist, song-writer and producer, PJ Morton. In fact, Brian has been playing with PJ for almost 20 years, acknowledging that their musical collaboration has helped shape him. Brian describes the incredibly profound impact a drummer named Larry had on him, certainly as a musician, but more importantly as a human being. Brian embodies positivity, kindness, and one of the most generous hearts I know. Check out the show notes for links to connect with Brian on social media and see Brian perform live with PJ Morton at the Beacon Theater in NYC on Saturday August 3rd. Enjoy the podcast! Do us and the world a favor. Go to your window and shout out "TINA FEY is on Las Culturistas!" Because it's true and everyone should know! Wish fulfillment is defined this week as Matt and Bowen welcome Great American Tina Fey to discuss Countess Luann fandom, Molly Ringwald's career as a transcriber of French novels, starting out at SNL in the tough-as-hell 90's, watching Benny Hill as a family, the beginning of MTV, Blockbuster culture, and the era of soda, hoagies and no fitness. All this, Disney v. Universal, SJP's 90's film work, Rachel McAdams's impact as Regina George, how Mean Girls was written on Fire Island, what makes the best SNL hosts and the joys and dangers of hosting the Golden Globes. Also, discovering the Tina and Amy magic and bringing that to the road on their Restless Leg Tour (go see it!!!), Reneé Rapp and how the Jimmy Awards are the future, deodorant culture, and a very prescient IDTSH from Tina that ranks as an all-timer. How many mozzarella sticks is enough for you? Something to think about. TINA!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today, we are taking a ride on the the way-back machine as guest Jay Wilson takes us to the UNH college campus and tells us about his second show–April 11, 1994 at Sively Arena.1994 was a pivotal year for the band in so many ways. In addition to this spring tour promoting Hoist–which was produced to be their most commercially viable album–the band was really showing off their schizophrenic musical style, combining absurdity with prodigious talent, and they were making the final leaps from large theaters to amphitheaters, at least in their most popular markets. Places like The Beacon Theater in New York would soon be replaced by Madison Square Garden, and this was when New England was still their stomping ground. By 1995 virtually all of New England would be left behind, except for the occasional stop.Today's conversation touches on virtually all of those aspects of 1994 Phish. But there's much more to it than that. Let's join Jay to talk about New Years Eve shows, falling in a hole, and jazz, as we discuss Phish's show from April 11, 1994 at Snively Arena.
Our friend Joe Gatto stopped by the show to talk about his comedy tour and playing The Beacon Theater in NYC! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome back to The Sports Law Podcast! We keep you up to date with everything happening at the intersection of sports and law. Dan Lust is joined by Mike Lawson this week to cover all the recent updates in the sports law world. Can you sue the NCAA because your team is not selected for the NCAA tournament? (2:25) Rutgers fans created an uproar after selection Sunday when Rutgers was not chosen for the March Madness tournament. Rutgers finished the season with a modest 19-15 record and ended up losing to Hofstra in the first round of the NIT tournament. Ja Morant was issued an 8-game suspension by the NBA. (7:25) Morant had been taking some time away from the Grizzlies to receive counseling following the incident where he flashed a gun on his Instagram while he was in a club. We discuss the comparable suspensions related to other conduct detrimental. Most notable was the Gilbert Arenas suspension for bringing a gun into the Wizards locker room that resulted in a 50-game suspension. We also compare this situation to the 8-game suspension that Kyrie received. Some updates in the James Dolan and MSG v. New York State Liquor Authority. (20:40) The State Liquor Authority ("SLA") hired a private investigator to look into the actions being taken by MSG (using facial recognition technology to restrict access to any venue if they are associated with a law firm with active litigation against MSG) violates the liquor laws, thus possibly resulting in a loss in their liquor licenses for those venues. These would include Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, and Beacon Theater. The SLA investigator claims that he was being followed for more than 100 miles and outside of his house taking photos. When the NYPD pulled over the vehicle later, it was reportedly a private investigator hired by MSG. MSG acknowledged they hired the PI and that it was "common and legal practice" to do so. Dolan and MSG filed an Article 78 claim in Manhattan claiming several actions against the NYS Liquor Authority seeking a preliminary injunction from any violations. Rumors surfaced of Aaron Rodgers being traded to the New York Jets. (33:50) Not so fast, it is apparent that the Packers are demanding a higher price and it is not a done deal yet. Rogers took to the Pat McAfee Show and Barstool to discuss his plans for the future and has made it known that he will be playing for the Jets in 2023. Rogers further went on to state that he has a very tight circle and NFL reporters do not know any information related to his camp. Joe Mixon's sister and her boyfriend are being charged in connection with the teenager who was shot outside of Mixon's residence. (40:25) The prosecution held a press conference stating that Lamonte Brewer is facing four charges including felony assault for shooting Mixon's neighbor. Video evidence shows Shalanda Mixon picking up the shell casings and leaving in a vehicle with Brewer. Shalanda is also being charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence. The video also shows that Joe Mixon had a weapon on him but did not draw or fire that weapon. The prosecution stated that they will not be filing any charges against Mixon because he was lawfully in possession of his own weapon. Mixon claims to have had a recent influx of death threats on social media. Dan Snyder is moving closer to a record sale of the Commanders. (46:51) However, Goodell appears to be receiving an extension on his contract that is set to expire in 2024. Could the final push of Goodell getting Snyder to sell seal the deal for the owners to vote on an extension for Goodell? *** Have a topic you want to write about?
