Moneda Moves
Boots on the Ground View of Latinos In '25 | Cora Cervantes, Independent Journalist

Moneda Moves

Welcome back, Moneda Moves community. Following an eventful start to this week in news, we have another amazing journalist on the podcast, Cora Cervantes, who spoke with Latinos all last year leading up to the election which landed Trump in office. She's here to share what she heard on the ground from Latinos, many of who are business owners, and their biggest concerns they want to see addressed – inclusive of economic issues.  And before we dive in, we would be remiss to not acknowledge the way our Latino communities (plural) will be disproportionately targeted ahead of mass deportations set to start this week. As a platform that stands behind first builders, rewriting our narratives that exemplify our collective force, and tools for empowerment – we acknowledge how damaging the combination of rhetoric and actions on behalf of the new administration can and will be. During this time, we will be leaning into our personal community on the ground. We've also found Eliza Orlins, New York City public defender, and her explainers particularly helpful as of late. As you know, this season we're focusing on 2025 economic trends, how they affect our entrepreneurial community, and how our community will move the American economy. We have a memorable lineup for you and can't wait to share the information and resources we're producing this season. As many of us know, 2024 was a tough year for small businesses. Average revenue was up, but so were expenses, according to Biz2Credit. Breaking down the numbers and net-net, profits were down: average monthly earnings for small businesses in the first 11 months of 2024 was about $86,000 - more than $60,000 lower than in 2023. Some entrepreneurs found themselves in the red in some cases, as this week's guest independent journalist Cora reported. When interviewing working-class Latinos about their businesses in 2024, she found that people were struggling to keep up with the current economic climate, let alone improve their economic standing. It can also explain why Latinos voted with the economy among their top concerns. This week's guest, Cora, is an independent journalist based in Los Angeles. She covers politics, immigration, climate change, and race and culture with an equity lens. She has a network television and cable news production background at NBC News and MSNBC. She has produced digital stories for multimedia outlets, including NBC News, Al-Jazeera, Latino USA, palabra, High Country News, and Narratively. Cora is a graduate of Columbia University and holds a Master's degree from New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. She currently serves as a board member of NAHJ's Los Angeles Chapter. Cora spent much of 2024 speaking with working-class Latinos about their businesses and how they perceive the economic environment in the United States. Small business owners are holding out hope that the economy will improve. But with the rising cost of goods eating away at their profits, they're eager for change. As a result, in the 2024 election, several sources she spoke with voted with the hope that the new president would improve the economy and protect their businesses. In this week's episode, we sit down with Cora to talk about what she learned while covering Latino business owners and their votes, as well as the coverage we can expect to see more of within the Latino community in 2025. We're discussing everything from why some Latinos voted the way they did to how stricter immigration policies could affect our day-to-day lives. The Latino community is incredibly diverse, and our reasons for what we do and who we vote for are layered. By having boots on the ground via journalists who speak with working-class business owners, we gain a better understanding of what they're experiencing and why. No te lo quieres perder. Trial Alert: Breaking Down Rahul's Recent $46 Million Verdict

In this episode, Ben and Rahul break down the recent $46 million verdict Rahul obtained in a case on behalf of a client injured during a Brazilian Jujitsu class.  Rahul talks about how he frames the issues in the case to deal with the challenge of many jurors believing that those who engage in dangerous activities, like Jujitsu, assume the risk of injury.  He shares his approach to voir dire and to obtaining this high-value verdict in a relatively conservative venue where verdicts tend to be on the lower side.  Rahul talks about how the verdict was received in the Jujitsu community and how it is likely to lead to changes that will make the practice safer.  About Rahul RavipudiRahul Ravipudi is a partner at Panish | Shea | Boyle | Ravipudi LLP and has spent his legal career handling catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases involving commercial vehicles, pedestrians, industrial or construction accidents, utility negligence, dangerous conditions of public and private property as well as cases of sexual abuse and sexual assault. Mr. Ravipudi also represents consumers in class actions against businesses who engage in unfair/illegal business practices and public entities in cases where corporations have endangered the safety, health, property or comfort of the public. Mr. Ravipudi currently serves as Public Entity Plaintiffs' Co-Lead Counsel in the JUUL Labs Product Cases, representing school districts and other public entities in California involved in litigation against the electronic cigarette manufacturer. Has also serves as Plaintiffs Co-Lead Counsel in the Southern California Fire Cases litigation arising out of the 2017 Thomas Fire and subsequent debris flows in Montecito, California as well as on the Plaintiffs Executive Committee in the California North Bay Fires litigation. Mr. Ravipudi previously served on the Steering Committee in the Blythe bus crash litigation. Named 2017 Trial Lawyer of the Year by Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, Mr. Ravipudi has obtained numerous landmark verdicts and settlements including a $160.5 million jury verdict for a man who suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a vicious beating by security personnel for a nightclub, a $46,475,112.33 jury verdict for a beginning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student who suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury while sparring with a Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club instructor who performed a technique which rendered the student an incomplete quadriplegic, a $28,500,000+ settlement for a special needs student who was catastrophically injured after being struck by a vehicle while under the care and supervision of Victor Elementary School District (VESD) personnel, as well as a $23,500,000 settlement on behalf of the family of Paul Lee, a 19-year-old non-verbal autistic student who tragically died aboard a Whittier school bus after the driver left him behind to engage in a sexual tryst with a coworker. The Lee case was a catalyst for significant change in school transportation with Governor Jerry Brown signing the “Paul Lee School Bus Safety Law” in September 2016, requiring all school buses in the state of California to be equipped with a child safety alarm system that must be deactivated by the bus driver before departing the bus. The new law will go into effect at the start of the 2018-19 school year and requires bus drivers to receive training in child-safety check procedures. Committed to serving as an advocate for his clients, Mr. Ravipudi has obtained numerous eight-figure awards including a $20,500,000 jury verdict for the mother of a high school student who was killed while walking to a bus stop, a $19,786,818 jury verdict for a man who suffered severe burn and traumatic brain injuries when his rental home exploded as a result of Southern California Gas Company negligence, a $13,935,550 jury verdict for 19-year-old pedestrian who suffered extensive injuries as a result of being struck on the sidewalk by a vehicle driven by a Los Angeles County employee, a $13,000,000 settlement for the children and parents of a woman who was killed when her car was hit by a Hawthorne, California police officer, a $11,000,000 settlement for the family of a middle school student who drowned during a school-sponsored swim party, a$10 million for the family of an independent truck driver killed by an intoxicated heavy lift operator at a stevedoring terminal in Long Beach, and an $8,000,000 jury verdict in Clark County District Court for a Nevada man who suffered significant internal injuries after he was served and ingested what he believed was a Honey Blonde Ale but was actually a chemical cleaning compound left in the tap lines. Mr. Ravipudi shared his insight into successfully litigating cases against the stevedoring companies in an article entitled, “Danger on the Docks – Where there is an injury or death on the waterfront, drugs or alcohol are too often involved” published in the February 2011 edition of Advocate, journal of the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. Additional recoveries obtained by Mr. Ravipudi include a $15,950,000 settlement for a teen who suffered a brain injury on an HOA playground, $8,000,000 settlement for an 81-year-old woman who suffered severe spinal cord injuries after falling at a hotel, a $7,000,000+ settlement during trial for the family of a man killed at SpeedVegas when the vehicle he was driving slammed into a track wall and burst into flames, $6,500,000 settlement for the two minor children and friend of a Southern California man who was killed after being struck on the highway by a freight truck whose driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel, a $6,000,000 settlement for a woman who suffered severe burn injuries when a faucet in the bathtub of her apartment detached and sprayed scalding hot water onto her body, a $5 million for an HVAC worker who suffered serious injuries when he fell through a skylight while working on a customer's roof, a $3.3 million gross jury verdict arising out of the death of a pest control person crushed and killed when a semi-truck reversed into him at a warehousing facility, and $9 million from the State of California (Caltrans) when a 16-year-old girl on a restricted license lost control of her vehicle and collided into a guardrail damaged two days earlier resulting in a bilateral traumatic below knee amputations. This case involved significant appellate issues which led to Mr. Ravipudi's article, “Dealing with the state of California's first line of defense – stonewalling any meaningful discovery” published in Advocate, Journal of Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles in February 2009. In recognition of his outstanding trial efforts, some of the awards Mr. Ravipudi has received include, but are not limited to:2023 Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiffs Consumer Lawyers2023 Lawyer of the Year in Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Best Lawyer2022 Top Plaintiffs Lawyer in California – Daily Journal2022 Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiffs Consumer Lawyers2021 Robert E. He participated as co-lead class counsel in a consumer class action case brought on behalf of all gas and electricity rate payers in the State of California against El Paso Natural Gas Company and Sempra Energy. This case arose out of the California Energy Crisis of 2000/2001 and resulted in the recovery of more than $3.5 billion in restitution to California utility customers. To date, this is recognized as one of the largest antitrust settlements in American history. Mr. Ravipudi also participated as co-lead counsel on an antitrust class action case brought on behalf of all gas and electricity rate payers in California against Reliant Energy Services and other energy traders for manipulating the California natural gas market by engaging in wash trades, churning, and false reporting. Hundreds of millions of dollars were recovered for rate payers of the State of California as well. In addition to serving as an Associate Editor for the Advocate, Journal of Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, Mr. Ravipudi actively publishes articles in various journals and trade publications and is a frequent speaker on various issues, including class action litigation and trial tactics. During the Red Power Movement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as part of its COINTELPRO (counterintelligence program), actively surveilled, infiltrated, and attempted to neutralize Native American activists and the American Indian Movement (AIM). With the establishment of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Indian Movement in Box Canyon, Ventura County, CA back in mid-1970s, the FBI infiltrated the Los Angeles chapter of AIM with agent provocateurs and wrongfully framed mid-level AIM activist Paul Durant Skyhorse (Anishinaabe Nation) and Richard Billings Mohawk (Tuscarora-Mohawk Nations) for the October 10th, 1974, murder of cab-driver George Aird. Paul Skyhorse and Richard Mohawk were arrested and what became known as the Skyhorse-Mohawk trial lasted 3½ years, cost California taxpayers $1.25 million, and both Native American peoples were incarcerated the entire time before their acquittal by a California jury on May 24th, 1978. Our guest for today is a long-time activist who was pivotal, instrumental, and critical in defending against various forms of injustice, including his participation in the Skyhorse Mohawk trial. As old state “agents” are starting to publically speak and publish stories about what allegedly happened, today's guest shares with listeners his lived experiences and participation in the Skyhorse-Mohawk trial and tell us what actually happened during the turbulent times of the state violence in silencing dissent, plus more. • Guest: o Moses Mora, long-time activist, organizer, and for past 50 years he has been part of the various grassroots movements including the American Indian Movement, environmental movement, Chicano movement. In addition, Mora was a first-hand participant in the Skyhorse-Mohawk trial. In 2019, Dafna Kaplan embarked upon a journey to uncover the obstacles preventing true construction innovation from widespread adoption. Extensive research and development led her to launch Cassette, and garnered her the 2020 Presidential Award from the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for her work addressing the housing crisis. In 2022, Cassette introduced a beautifully designed one-bedroom apartment pod that can stack up to six stories high into a multifamily development. Dafna's commitment is simple and straightforward: Deliver one manufactured product exceptionally well, improve that product's performance and features over time, and with that discipline and repetition – reverse the cost escalation in housing construction. During the pandemic many travel addicts like myself were suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms but as the saying goes, an addict will always find a way... In the fall of 2020 an app called Clubhouse was founded, a place where people could meet and talk in different virtual rooms. Klaus Derendorf knew what his tribe was missing, he knew that an airport lounge is what we needed and he created a room called THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LOUNGE which is a very special place where people from all over the world meet and engage in stimulating conversations about travel, the world and humanity. No politics or pitching of any kind of product or service is allowed. I used to wake up in the morning, open my app and start talking to people from all over the world imagining that I was in Los Angeles or Sydney or Hongkong and not in my PJs on my sofa in Limassol. We talked about culture and countries and so many stories were told and friendships were formed; after the pandemic people started meeting each other in person.Of course Klaus Derendorf is so much more than the founder of a Clubhouse room. He has 20+ year track record in global media, tech & venture financing with high level professional relationships in banking, family offices and VC. He is an experienced company director, business developer & investor with strong EQ, technology, marketing, analytics and management skills as well as a forward thinking growth driver & team builder. He is passionate about discovering, supporting and building the next game changing platforms, services and products with incredible teams. People over product. ESG & sustainability metrics matter. He has a trilingual multi-cultural background and education with extensive business experience in English, Spanish & German across the Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia. He is a former award winning music producer and company founder with sales in excess of 20 Million units including six number 1 albums and singles. Producer on international talent TV shows X Factor, The Voice & Got Talent and he served on the Board of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Recording Academy (Grammys). Just as we analyze the impacts of our food and energy use, equally important is understanding from where our clothes originate, their environmental and social impacts, and how to dispose of them in an environmentally responsible manner. According to a 2017 Ellen MacArthur Foundation report, every second on this planet, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing and textiles is landfilled or burned. On this show we interview Karri Ann Frerichs, CEO and Founder of Circular Fashion LA [http://www.circularfashionla.com/] whose mission is to give new life and add more value to clothing and to help customers keep loving the clothes they already own for much longer. Circular fashion moves away from single use products and services that don't reflect the true cost of an item; spoiler there is no such thing as a truly $10 t-shirt. Circular fashion is a system where the design of our clothing and personal belongings considers both the production of an item and the end of its life as of equal importance. It rethinks the linear “take-make-dispose” model and instead asks the industry to prioritize responsible materials, manufacturing, labor, use, and end-of-life for every garment. Karri Ann Frerichs has been a fashion industry entrepreneur and innovator since 2008, working in retail management, wholesale distribution, brand development and apparel manufacturing, with a focus on zero-waste, regenerative product development. She has taught the Business of Fashion to university students since 2010 and in her current position at Woodbury University, has also spearheaded the addition of Circular Economy curriculum since 2019. In 2020, she became an Ellen MacArthur Foundation Circular Economy Pioneer and mentor to the From Linear to Circular Programme, and also launched the Los Angeles Chapter of the Circular Economy Club. Jessica Aldridge, Co-Host and Producer of EcoJustice Radio, is an environmental educator, community organizer, and 15-year waste industry leader. Chellie focuses on working with clients to provide a balance between taking a risk and being financially responsible; she promotes financial literacy for everyone. This is just the tip of the iceberg though; listen along and soak up everything she has to say. Her advice is invaluable. Not As Easy As You ThinkTo start, Chellie talks a little bit about how seemingly impossible writing a book seemed to her. Her clients had affirmed her ability to teach and convey considerable wisdom on financial matters, but they wanted her advice in book form. After struggling with the prospect of writing a book, she found the structure for The Wealthy Spirit that she wanted to utilize and did so with aplomb. The rest is best selling history.Positive AffirmationsChellie also states that for many people, the logical progression to financial success starts with the law of attraction and then the law of action. This means that positive thinking will ultimately spur the kinds of activities that are conducive to success. One wouldn't expect an interview to go well when one's mind has already determined a negative result. But there is also a limit to just how effective positive affirmations can be! Positive affirmations are very important to frame a successful action; but, as Chellie states, you can sit at a piano and make affirmations for hours--eventually, though, you will have to practice to get any good at playing.Send Out ShipsAnother key aspect of the episode is Chellie breaks down the importance of her famous saying: “send out ships.” Take positive actions in personal life and professional life. Don't just send emails, but instead, call clients. Reach out to people and put positivity out into the world. She also breaks down the historical meaning of the phrase. It comes from a 19th-century instance where London merchants would load up their ships with provisions and send them out on yearlong endeavors with no means for communication. It would take a while, but eventually, their ship would come in, treasure and all! And so, she tells her friends, colleagues, and clients that you must send out a lot of ships. Ultimately, you will reap the rewards. For much more, including poker, Chellie's new program coming in February, taking risks, and plenty of other useful tidbits, listen along. You won't want to miss it!How to Connect with Chellie:Chellie's Phone Number: 310-476-1622Email Address: chellie@chellie.comBusiness Website URL: http://www.chellie.comFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/Chellie.CampbellInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/chelliecampbellTwitter: https://twitter.com/ChellieCampbellLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chellie-campbellFor various podcast episodes with Chellie as guest: https://www.chellie.com/downloads/More info - http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy - The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly - http://crowflyrocks.com/

A democratic leader doesn’t have to give everyone their way, just give everyone their say. When listening to ideas, just listen. Don’t fix or tweak or improve. We had our monthly Living Poetry Poet's Connection meeting on January 9 2021 with special guest Denise Gibbon, Literary Attorney. She talked about copyright and answered several questions related to literary law and poetry protection. From the About section of Denise Gibbons website: "A publishing consultant as well as a licensed attorney in both California and New York, I represent and educate authors about contracts, copyright and other publishing issues. After graduating from the University of San Francisco School of Law over twenty-five years ago, I began my legal career as a litigator in Los Angeles, California, where I worked for two large firms — Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May, and a New York based firm (hold your breath), Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker. In the course of representing authors in California, I prepared and negotiated publishing contracts for the Los Angeles Chapter of the national mystery writers’ organization, Sisters In Crime, and wrote a legal column dubbed “The Legal Weapon” for the organization’s publication, Ransom Notes. As an attorney in New York, I persuaded a large New York publisher not to categorize my client’s already-published true-life-non-fiction work as fiction, successfully convinced producers of a popular TV tabloid to remove libelous material about a client from a segment prior to its national broadcast date, and persuaded a prominent and reluctant publisher to terminate three publishing contracts with a successful but dissatisfied author. Prior to that, I was a volunteer-attorney for the Author’s Guild, a distinguished national organization that educates writers about their legal rights. There, I reviewed, explained and revised contracts of various kinds for numerous Guild members. There was also life before and between the law gigs. As a reporter for a New York newspaper, I covered local news and interviewed artists such as Janis Ian, Richie Havens, and Cleo Laine for feature articles. In California, as a member of the Los Angeles Poets and Writers Collective, and tutored by the inimitable Jack Grapes, I published and edited poetry with Bombshelter Press and sang for three years with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus under the direction of Seiji Ozawa. Finally, for seventeen years, I had the presence of mind to earn a precarious and rewarding living as a professional singer in San Francisco. And between you and me, I’d do it again." Because at Maker's Mark, it's one bottle at a time. Every time. That's as true today as it was when our founders filled our first bottle. And since then, it's been a widely held belief around here that character isn't made by machine.Soft red winter wheat is the Maker's Mark® flavoring grain and star of its mash bill. In a day when distiller's rye – which can have an unwanted bite – was the go-to grain for whisky makers, Bill Samuels, Sr., set out for a flavor that would let his new bourbon stand out in the crowd. After some trial and error, he discovered exactly what he was thirsting for.The limestone shelf where the distillery is located is key to crafting the unique taste of Maker's Mark – the only distillery with its own water source and watershed. Kentucky limestone filters out iron from water, which is unpleasant in bourbon. The pure calcium- and magnesium-rich water surrounding the distillery makes better drinking water and a better sour mash in which yeast can flourish.Sometimes the best, freshest ingredient available is an heirloom yeast strain that's more than 150 years old. In fact, this highly guarded microorganism has been passed down to every bottle of Maker's Mark ever produced. Would it have been easier to switch to cheaper stock yeast when everyone else was? Sure. But, it wouldn't be better. And, it wouldn't be Maker's Mark. The yeast ferments in tanks that are original to the old Burks Distillery that predates Maker's Mark. They're made from cypress planks more than 100 years old. Hard to source these days, cypress is ideal because it has no effect on the flavor of Maker's Mark. Our double-barrel distillation stills:In addition to being stunning to look at, these gleaming copper stills are key to our double-distillation process, which removes impurities for a more refined sipping whisky. As demand grew, our friends at Vendome Copper & Brass Works fabricated and helped us install an exact replica of our original still, creating this cool mirror illusion in our stillhouse and ensuring every drop of Maker's is still made the same way as Bill intended. The perfect degree of char:It takes just 40 seconds of fire to achieve Maker's Mark customary number-three char. The process of firing barrels opens pores in the staves and caramelizes the natural wood sugars. This helps give Maker's Mark those pleasant vanilla notes. But before the firing can happen, the cooperage (or barrel-building company) must "season" the new American white oak used for our barrels outdoors for nine months, including summer. This helps remove the bitter tannins in the wood that would otherwise go into the bourbon.Barrel rotation by hand:We rotate our 525-pound barrels by hand to ensure proper exposure to the different temperatures around the rackhouse. This adds consistency from barrel to barrel while setting us apart from distillers who abandoned the practice long ago. Barrels spend a minimum of three hot Kentucky summers in the top of the rackhouse where the whisky expands through the wood, gaining color and flavor. Our tasting panel determines when the whisky is ready to move to a cooler section, keeping it from maturing too quickly.makersmark.com--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

One wouldn’t expect an interview to go well when one’s mind has already determined a negative result. Don’t just send emails, but instead, call clients. For much more, including poker, Chellie’s new program coming in February, taking risks, and plenty of other useful tidbits, listen along. On this episode, Matt & Jesse have a discussion with Kelsey Goldberg (@KelseyFGold) and Jack Suria Linares (@SuriaLinares213) from DSA-Los Angeles chapter about the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Kelsey and Jack explore their childhood and later political awakening by describing the moment (or moments) that led to not only their transcendent belief in socialism, but how they went beyond mere beliefs by deciding to take action and become activists and organizers via their self-discovery process. We will also learn about DSA's history and contributions, as well as its future aims as a consequence of its recent National Convention. Additionally, our visitors to the show will talk about what DSA-LA has in the revolutionary pot that's about to boil over into a Mario-Brothers pasta of comrade-goodness. CARRIE MORITA spent 36 years teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Although she had several opportunities to work closer to home, Mrs. Morita endured a daily 75-mile, bumper-to-bumper roundtrip commute to teach at Eagle Rock Elementary School because of the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of its large student body. (45:58)      EPISODE NOTES - Posted June 10, 2017: I cannot bring myself to call CARRIE MORITA by her first name. She was both my daughters Taite and Quinn’s kindergarten teacher at Eagle Rock Elementary School and has always been – and always will be – MRS. MORITA to me.   PHOTO: Carrie Morita at her retirement party in June 2011. Hundreds of friends, colleagues, former students and their families came to wish her well. It does, as they say, “seem like only yesterday” that Jillian and I took our little 5-year-old Taite Rose Pierson to Mrs. Morita’s kindergarten classroom for her first day of school. Taite’s now 18 and, indeed, it was only yesterday that she graduated as one of Eagle Rock High School’s two valedictorians. And, true to faithful form, Mrs. Morita was there to hear Taite deliver her valedictory speech. Mrs. Morita has shown up to support Taite many times throughout her K-12 journey. Taite recently made her penultimate appearance with the Pasadena Civic Ballet as the flying-carpet-riding genie in “Aladdin” and, like so many of her past performances, Mrs. Morita was there with flowers in hand.PHOTOS: Carrie Morita with my daughter, Taite Pierson, on her last day of kindergarten in June 2005; and Mrs. Morita with Taite in February 2017 after her performance in "Aladdin." Mrs. Morita even helped Taite learn how to drive a car, which came about shortly after my second and last time in the passenger seat ended with me yelling: “When I say stop, I mean STOP!” Mrs. Morita’s Zen-like patience and affection for one of her long-ago kindergarten kiddos definitely contributed to Taite becoming the competent and confident driver she is today. Taite is not alone in receiving this kind of special treatment. After teaching for 36 years, Mrs. Morita is involved in the lives of many of her former students, and cheerfully attends their birthday parties, weddings and baby showers on a regular basis. PHOTO: Mrs. Morita's 2004/2005 kindergarten class at Eagle Rock Elementary School celebrating the 100th day of school and wearing Room 29's signature tie-dye T-shirts. But looking back at the beginning of her career teaching kindergarten, Mrs. Morita couldn’t possibly have imagined that she would develop lasting friendships with so many of the little people who would pass through her classroom. In fact, she tells me that teaching 5-year-olds was the last thing she ever thought she wanted to do: “I have to admit, I almost went kicking and screaming down to kindergarten. I have taught all the grades and I did say the one grade that I would never teach would be kindergarten, because I didn’t feel that I was capable of teaching it; that it would be a bigger challenge than I wanted to put myself through. But it did become a grade that I really did love.” PHOTO: Mrs. Morita's 2004/2005 kindergarten class presenting Room 29's Winter Performance. Mrs. Morita proved that she loved teaching kindergarten – and teaching it at Eagle Rock Elementary School, specifically – by enduring a daily 75-mile, bumper-to-bumper roundtrip commute to do so. And while she had several opportunities over the years to work at schools closer to home, ERES always held a special attraction for her: “Eagle Rock is really a very diverse community. And sometimes that word ‘diverse’ can be an over-played term, but Eagle Rock truly is a diverse community. I liked having families of different nationalities; families of different socioeconomic levels; and families that had many different experiences. One of the things that I did like to do was do a Student of the Week so the kids could show that there were many similarities, even though there were many differences between them.” PHOTO: Mrs. Morita's 2004/2005 kindergarten class celebrating Cinco de Mayo. The appeal of a diverse student body is deep-rooted in Mrs. Morita’s own personal history. Growing up in San Diego, she was the only Asian American in a high school graduating class of 1,000. Cal State Long Beach, however, provided her with a more heterogeneous academic experience. And it was there, as a college freshman, that she took an Asian American Studies class that changed her worldview in a profound and unexpected way. “I learned how, during World War II, Japanese and Japanese Americans were incarcerated in this country. This was the first time I heard about this injustice. I called home to tell my mother what had happened to so many people. And she hesitated. And then she said, ‘Dad and I were both in camps in Arizona.’ And it was like: ‘You never mentioned this to us?!?’ I feel it was, for many, a shameful, humiliating incident.” PHOTO: Mrs. Morita's mother, Takaye Tokimura (in foreground), and her sister, Ruth, at the Gila River War Relocation Center.  Many years later, Mrs. Morita learned of her father being drafted into a segregated Army unit made up of Japanese American men, and the heroic efforts that he and his fellow soldiers quietly made in the latter part of WWII. George Furuya was awarded 2 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star – but his daughter never heard a word about it from him. PHOTO: Mrs. Morita's father, George Furuya, was held at the Poston War Relocation Center in Yuma County for a year before being drafted into a US Army regimental combat team. Ironically, Mr. Furuya had tried to enlist right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor but, despite being born and raised in California, was rejected because he was considered an enemy alien. Mrs. Morita is, herself, not prone to such silence. As a matter of fact, she was quite vocal a few months ago about the attempted ban on immigration and marched in protest at LAX on 3 separate occasions: “I feel like it is my responsibility, and the responsibility of all Japanese Americans to stand up and speak out against what we see going on in our country right now. The fact that a Muslim registry was even brought up by our government; that there was an executive order on immigration; it is my responsibility to stand up and say: No! Never again!” PHOTO: Mrs. Morita at one of three protests at LAX she attended. She's standing with Hussar Ayloush, the executive director of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Although Mrs. Morita retired from teaching in 2011, she’s still every bit a teacher today.
