Frenette's love of music started at the age of 5 while playing the bongos and listening to records with his parents. Artists like Perez Perado, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Johnny Cash and Tom Jones were constantly spinning on the record player. By the age of 10, Matt was learning his rudiments in a marching and concert band. Some of Matt's early influences include Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Michael Shrieve, Danny Seraphine,Billy Cobham, and later influences include Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, and Richard Bailey. Frenette is a founding member of Streetheart and his legacy as the other half of one of rock's greatest rhythm sections is still a part of Canadian rock legend. Matt's fierce approach to every song and powerful grooves he created were a big part of the musical foundation that Streetheart built their unmistakable sound on in the early days. In 1979 Matthew left Streetheart to join Paul Dean's new band Loverboy. Originally, Matt Frenette played drums for a side-project band, Headpins while Bernie Aubin played drums for a fellow Vancouver band, the soon to be renamed Loverboy. But within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands, where each continues to play to the present Alongside fellow Loverboy founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson, with Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, Matt Frenette has been "Working for the Weekend" since forming in Calgary, Alberta over 36 years ago. Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling "Get Lucky." In 1982, as a member of Loverboy, Frenette went on to win a "still-record" six Juno awards. Matt's solid groove, versatile musicality and his visually exciting performance has created a demand for his appearance in many different artists' recordings, videos and tours, such as: Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Colin James and many other talented musicians.   Some Things That Came Up:  -1:30 Rich saw Matt with Loverboy at The El Paso Coliseum, 1985!  -3:00 Matt broke through the bass drum head! The big blue cities like New York City, San Francisco, and Chicago are losing millions, and the trend continued well into 2022. New York City is looking more like a gigantic ghost town, especially with the depopulation of office space. A full twenty-six Empire State Buildings could fit into New York City's empty office space. All of this is good news for those who have watched the blue cities corrupt themselves for too long. The Babel principle kicks in with the trend toward decentralization, exodus from the big cities, weapons of mass destruction, telecommuting, and the reversal of Roe v. Wade to the determination of the states. We end with some helpful guidance for families who wish to be freed from the slavery of debt and the bondage of the big cities. Hey, big city, turn me loose and set me free.

We're finishing off season 8 with a real banger!  First up is one of the best interviews from the archives – a 2007 chat with Mike Reno of Loverboy. Mike is a gifted storyteller as he explains the origins of the band's name, why a legacy band creates new music, and why they were embraced by MTV immediately.             Mike also talks about their late bassist Scott Smith, who was declared missing when he was swept overboard by a large wave while sailing off the coast of San Francisco.             Mike then tells us the stories behind some of Loverboy's biggest hits, including “Turn Me Loose”, “Working For The Weekend” and “The Kid Is Hot Tonite”.               Following the Loverboy chat, we have an amazing series of clips from Chuck Berry – the very first inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Chuck breaks down a number of his biggest hits – and then veers off in a strange direction. But Chuck has a lot to say and it's all good.  Great to have so much audio from one of the pioneers of rock and roll.               Next up is Tom's very weird chat with Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols.  Johnny talks about The Pistols' legacy and why life with Public Image Ltd was a much more rewarding experience.  Johnny also uses the opportunity to bash the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  Strangely, Tom actually forgot we had this interview in our archives!  It's definitely worth a listen!               And for our podcast listeners, Christopher has a very special tribute to the late Burt Bacharach, the musical genius behind dozens of hits that spanned decades.  Bacharach passed away on Feb 8, 2023 at the age of 94.   Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 70 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, Newstalk 1290 London, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville.

In 1980, the music business was coming down from the disco era, and new era of musical styles were emerging. Clashing with bands that were driving the new wave bandwagon, Loverboy powered its way onto the scene, bringing newfound charisma, stage presence, impeccable song writing, and driving beats that kids everywhere did their very best air guitar impressions to. Conservative commentary has managed to find at least one point of withering criticism when it comes to America’s cities. This critique points out that, while cities are the places where unique innovation and exciting things are happening all the time, the local Democratic political machines (and, strangely, their voter base within the city) are constantly trying to zone, regulate, and tax that innovation and excitement out of existence. In this episode, Leah and Taraleigh have the pleasure of sitting down with a whole family of talented musicians, Denise and Bobby Deitch, and their son Adam Deitch. Fans get a real treat by experiencing the love, connection, and support of the Deitch family and a glimpse into Adam’s early influences and first live performance that transformed his childhood experience. Adam talks about how he is staying busy during COVID times and ways he is continuing to bring music to the people. For the “Did you Know” section, Leah provides research on the emotion of love, often present during live music, and Taraleigh tells listeners how to cultivate love in all its forms in her “Daily Jam.” Denise Hettinger Deitch has studied music since her early childhood. In middle school she was in a special music program in NYC when she began playing drums. She then attended Berklee College of Music and graduated with a degree in Music Education. During her time in Boston, she performed on drums with various bands. She then moved to NY to be with family with her husband and baby son. Denise performed with Bobby as a duo 4 to 6 nights a week in the NY Tri-state area for approximately 21 years. During that time she began teaching music in NY area and obtained a Masters degree followed by an additional 60 credits. She then retired after teaching for 25+ years. She is now performing as percussionist and background vocalist with the Bobby Deitch Band and teaching drums and piano privately. Bobby Deitch began his love for music at the age of 5. His eclectic musical taste was attributed to the fact that several genres of music were played in the Deitch household, on a daily basis. Bobby gravitated to drums by age 8. At age 8 Bobby’s uncle Dave Abrams, a well-known professional drummer and vocalist was an early influence on Bobby’s early musical development and by age 11 his parents purchased his first drum kit. After graduating high school in 1971, Bobby focused on studying music more seriously and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music. There he began to work on all aspects of music such as composition, harmony, ear training and counterpoint with some of the best instructors in the business. Bobby has performed on drums on several recordings such as pianist/composer Richard Sorce’s acclaimed Latin album “A Place I’ve Never Been” and guitarist/Berklee faculty member Richie Hart’s “331/3” album. In April, 2020, Bobby, along with his band The Bobby Deitch Band (BDB) released their second album, “Work With Whatcha Got”, which has reached global acclaim. Adam Deitch’s career has crossed genres and he plays the role of both producer and drummer. Adam was inspired by hip-hop at an early age, inspired by Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim. Adam has produced records for such luminaries as 50-Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Chali 2na and MF Doom. He has also done major session work on drums for artists including Justin Timberlake, Daniel Bedingfield, Anthony Hamilton, DJ Quik and Wyclef Jean and the Fugees. Adam has toured the world and recorded as a member of the Grammy Nominated John Scofield Band, Pretty Lights, the Average White Band, The Fugees, Wyclef Jean, Meshell Ndegeocello and his own Break Science and Lettuce. Recent highlights include a Grammy nomination for Ledisi's Turn Me Loose for which Adam produced and co-wrote two songs, co-writing and production for Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi's Sony debut, production of two tracks on Matisyahu's latest and a platinum single for Italian rap sensation Fabri Fibra. In 2020, Lettuce was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album with their 2019 release Elevate. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts,

This story orginally aired on February 24, 2018. This past September, Steve Fournier expected to go out with his friends to see one of his favorite Rock bands, Loverboy, in concert. What he didn’t expect is for lead singer, Mike Reno, to get the flu and only be able to perform a couple songs. Reno’s wife started talking to the crowd to find someone in the audience to take his place. Fournier’s friends started pointing at him telling her to pull him up on stage. “The people that were around me started chanting my name, and I was like this is just too much. After doing well with their 1980 self-titled album, Canadian rock band Loverboy would head into the stratosphere with their second studio album entitled Get Lucky. Benefiting from a photogenic lead singer (Mike Reno) clad in read leather pants, Loverboy would ride the MTV wave to the top of the rock and pop charts. Loverboy was founded in 1979 by front man Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, who met when Reno was working at a steakhouse and heard Dean playing guitar in a bus station behind the restaurant. Success came quickly, with hits like "Turn Me Loose” and "The Kid is Hot Tonite” from their first album. The name Loverboy came from Paul Dean's dream inspired by the Cover Girl fashion magazine. “Cover Boy” then became “Loverboy,” and the name stuck.Loverboy is still out performing, and Reno still wears the headband. While it made a fashion statement at the time, he claims it was to keep the sweat from getting in his eyes. The band is the same in its entirety today, except for Scott Smith, their original bass player, who was lost at sea when a rogue wave hit his sailboat. He was replaced by bassist Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve in 2001.Grab your red leather pants and sing along with this hit album. When It's OverThis their second single, and the second track on the album. It made it to number 26 on the charts. It tells the story of a guy waiting for the failure of a bad relationship so he can get the girl.Working for the WeekendYou will recognize this track from the starting cowbell if you ever heard 96 Rock's “5 O'Clock Whistle” back in the day. This is the lead single from the album, and went to number 29. Paul Dean was walking on the beach on a Wednesday afternoon, thinking about how everyone was busy at work, waiting for the weekend. With the band’s feedback, the line "waiting for the weekend" became "working for the weekend."Lucky OnesA hopeful track, this song gives the album its name. “Don't ask me how, but guess who hit the big time?”Take Me To the TopA deeper cut - though still a hit single on a single-heavy album. The synthesizer intro is distinctive. This track was actually a demo that made it right onto the album without a studio version. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the Motion Picture “Halloween II”You have to have a creepy theme from a spooky movie if your profiling music from October, right? Villain Michael Myers also debuted on television for the first time in October 1981, as the original "Halloween" appeared on the networks - heavily edited.STAFF PICKS:“Talk Dirty” by John EntwistleWayne's staff pick brings us a solo outing from “The Ox,” John Entwistle, bassist from The Who. This song was a minor hit at the time, when members of The Who were engaged in solo projects. Joe Walsh takes lead guitar duties on this one.“Destroyer” by The KinksBruce features a hit off their 19th album that was incredibly popular for a rock song at the time. The Kinks make reference to two previous songs, "Lola" and "All Day and All of the Night." Stop! Hold on! Stay in control...“Tryin' to Live My Life Without You” by Bob SegarBrian's staff pick is a live rendition of a song originally written by Larry Williams and released by Otis Clay in late 1972. Segar's version went to number 5, so it was much more popular than the original.“In Your Letter” by REO SpeedwagonRob features a do-wop song from REO Speedwagon's hit album “Hi Infidelity.” Despite the 60's sound, this song is not a cover. Keyboardist Gary Richrath wrote this song after finding a letter from his ex-wife indicating that his wife had left him...for their drug dealer. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the Television Show “Hill Street Blues” by Mike PostThis instrumental theme was on the charts at the time.

Emmy Award and multiple NAACP Image Award-winning film, television and stage veteran Joe Morton is perhaps best known for his role as Rowan Pope in the television series “Scandal.” Morton’s television credits include a recurring role as lawyer Daniel Golden on “The Good Wife,” on the Network; five seasons as scientist Henry Deacon in the Emmy-nominated series “Eureka”; “The Cosby Show” spinoff “A Different World”; the Kyra Sedgwick-produced “Proof”; and “Grace & Frankie.” In 2016 he portrayed the role of Roy Wilkins alongside Bryan Cranston in the Emmy-nominated biopic “All the Way,” adapted from the Tony Award-winning Robert Schenkkan play.   In 2016 Morton appeared in the feature film “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” as Silas Stone, and he reprised the role in November 2017 in “Justice League.” His additional feature film credits include playing the title character in John Sayles’ “The Brother from Another Planet” and roles in “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” “American Gangster,” “What Lies Beneath,” “Blues Brothers 2000” and “The Astronaut’s Wife.”   Recently, Morton starred as the titular role alongside Tom Hanks in Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles’ production of “Henry IV.” Staged by Tony Award-winning director Daniel Sullivan, the critically raved show featured Morton as Henry IV and Hanks as Sir John Falstaff. In spring 2016, Morton portrayed the groundbreaking comedian Dick Gregory in the one-man show “Turn Me Loose,” executive produced by Grammy Award winner John Legend. Morton was honored with the NAACP Theatre Lifetime Achievement Award and was awarded the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play. Also, he was nominated for the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance. In October 2017, he brought “Turn Me Loose” to Los Angeles at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.   Born in Harlem, Morton was raised in a military family and spent parts of his childhood in West Germany and Okinawa, Japan, before finishing school in New York. After attending Hofstra University, Morton debuted on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning musical “Hair,” followed by his starring role in “Raisin,” the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” which earned him a Tony nomination and Theatre World Award for his portrayal as the embittered Walter Lee Younger. In addition, he appeared in David Hare’s “Stuff Happens” at the National Theatre in London as Colin Powell and played Serge in “Art” on Broadway (and in London’s West End) with Judd Hirsch and George Wendt.   Morton is a huge proponent of diversity in Hollywood and uses his platform to express the need for more contemporary non-white roles in television and film. Morton devotes his rare free time to writing, playing his guitar and recording music. Music has been a huge part of his life, and his talent has led him to write and score a multitude of songs for various film and TV projects.

Loverboy  lead guitarist Paul Dean is a rare breed in a rock band. He’s loyal to almost a fault, and in a world dominated by Guitar Gods, his ego is checked at the door while focusing on writing music not to suit his own stature, but rather put his lead singer Mike Reno in the best possible situation to use what Paul says is “one of the best rock voices in history” Formed in Calgary in 1979, Loverboy ruled the rock airwaves and MTV from 80 -85 with an amazing string of hits and platinum albums. Tunes like “Turn Me Loose”, “Hot Girls In Love”, “Lovin’ Every Minute Of It”, “Working For The Weekend”, and more. After a successful debut album with Canadian rockers Streetheart, Paul Dean was sent packing back to Calgary where he got back up on the horse, coming together with rock solid vocalist Mike Reno to form Loverboy. Paul Dean was instrumental in the success of Loverboy, co-writing on almost all the songs for the first 4 records, which by the way were the ones that made Loverboy a household name in the 80s. In this episode, Growin’ Up Rock’s Steven Michael talks on the phone with Loverboy’s guitarist Paul Dean to discuss his early years, growing up in a remote Canadian resort area, playing around the campfires, and seeing Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge play live. We get into his early bands, Loverboy, and what he feels his role in the band has always been. We discuss why he thinks Loverboy’s members have stayed in tact for so many years continuing to play out live each and every year. We talk about the release of his new single and solo album, and just have a genuinely great conversation with one of Steven’s many influential Growin’ Up Rock  bands Like always - Get out there and support live and recorded rock n roll music. Joe has over 40 years of experience in theatre, television and film and has become a dominating presence on Shonda Rhimes' groundbreaking series. Often referred to as the 'Monologue King,' Morton's dialogue has been communicated almost exclusively in eloquent intervals delivering poignant speeches that are both singular and blistering, whilst addressing class, race and privilege; topics that are rarely covered in primetime television. As a central and lethal focal point throughout the series, critics and audiences alike came to understand that “Rowan” is the seemingly evil mastermind behind nearly all of the nefarious events that have unfolded.  2016 has been Joe's busiest year! Morton recently made an appearance in Zack Snyder's BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE playing the role of 'Dr. Silas Stone' of S.T.A.R. Labs, the father of 'Victor Stone,' the metahuman better known as Cyborg, who is set to appear in countless films slated for release over the course of the next four years. Morton also portrayed the role of NAACP leader Roy Wilkins alongside Bryan Cranston in the critically-acclaimed HBO Lyndon B. Johnson biopic ALL THE WAY, adapted from the Tony-winning Robert Schenkkan play, directed by Jay Roach and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Last but not least, Morton returned to his theater roots as he portrays the groundbreaking comedian Dick Gregory in the one-man show TURN ME LOOSE at The Westside Theatre in New York City, receiving rave reviews. The New York Times

Ledisi Young (her given name meaning "to bring forth" in Nigerian) was born in the Big Easy, where she sang with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra when she was eight years old and spent many adolescent hours watching her mother perform with a local R&B band, often in a nearby park. After the family relocated to Oakland, CA, Ledisi followed her mother's lead and sang in a local band, but left to form her own group and identity. She became widely noted for her performances in Beach Blanket Babylon, a long-running San Francisco-based cabaret featuring song parodies, celebrity impersonations, and enormous hats; she got the gig after being nominated for a Shellie Award in 1990 for her role as Dorothy in a local version of The Wiz. She later formed Anibade (Ledisi's middle name), which depending on what you read means "to bring forth luck" or "my mother is great" in Yoruba. In 2000, Ledisi released her first album, entitled Soulsinger: The Revival. Ledisi and her group toured in 2001, performing various shows. In 2002, Ledisi released her second album, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue. The album won her an award for "Outstanding Jazz Album" at the California Music Awards. In 2007, Ledisi signed a major record deal with Verve Forecast and released her third album in August of that year, entitled Lost & Found, which sold almost 217,000 copies and earned her two Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist. In 2008, Ledisi released her Christmas album, It's Christmas. In 2009, Ledisi released her fourth album Turn Me Loose, which earned her 2 Grammy nominations. Her latest album is ‘Pieces of Me'.
