Kansas was at the height of their prowess and popularity as a prog rock-leaning band in 1978 when they released their first live album, Two for the Show. Recorded during tours in 1977 and 1978, the double album gives the listener a glimpse into the energy of the band at the time. The songs span the first five studio albums released by the group, from the eponymously named "Kansas" to the highly successful "Point of Know Return."Kansas would have a number of personnel changes over time, but this lineup would be the classic one. Steve Walsh is on keyboards and vocals, Robby Steinhardt is on violins and vocals, Kerry Livgren is on guitars and keyboards, Rich Williams is on guitars, Dave Hope is on bass, and Phil Ehart is on percussion. In addition to the complex metered songs and excellent harmonies, Kansas also features Robby Steinhardt on violin in most of their songs. The unusual use of violin in a rock band would create one of the signature sounds of Kansas. Kansas would go on to have a number of hits in the 80's. In 1982 front man Steve Walsh would leave the group and be replaced by John Elfante. In 1983 both Livgren and Hope would leave the group to form the contemporary Christian band called AD. Later Elfante would also leave the group to join the Contemporary Christian music genre, replaced by a returning Steve Walsh.Bruce presents this live prog rock masterpiece for this week's podcast.. Song for AmericaThis long-form masterpiece from the album of the same name was written by Kerry Livgren. Its 3+ minute instrumental prelude did not make it onto the single release, but was a staple of FM rock stations at the time. Livgren was inspired to write the song after viewing the country from a plane flight.Dust In the WindThe big hit from "Point of Know Return," went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Livgren originally wrote the music as a guitar exercise, and his wife encouraged him to develop it into a song. The lyrics for this ballad come from the Bible, where the Preacher from Ecclesiastes says "everything he (man) has accomplished is futile - like chasing the wind." This live version concludes with an acoustic guitar outro performed by Rich Williams.Lonely WindThe live version of this song from their debut studio album begins with a piano solo from Kerry Livgren. Steve Walsh penned this melancholy track about loneliness, with the wind personifying that feeling. "Cry for me, sigh for me, sad breezes blow. Stay for me, play for me, the song my friends will know. My lonely wind must blow." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Grease by Frankie Valli (from the motion picture "Grease")John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John star in this blockbuster musical set in a 50's high school. 50's icon Frankie Valli performs the title song, written by Barry Gibb. STAFF PICKS:Strange Way by FirefallWayne goes more mellow than normal to start the staff picks. This was the first track and big hit from the third album by Boulder, Colorado's Firefall. It talks about a relationship based on relaying sorrow or self-pity, and not being able to move the current relationship forward. Straight On by HeartRob brings us a well-known song from Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. This was the first single off their album "Dog & Butterfly," and became their third top 20 single, hitting number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics compare love to a game of chance, where you have to take some risks if you want to win.Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen"Get on your bikes and ride!" Lynch features a hit written by Brian May with Freddie Mercury in mind, knowing that Mercury appreciated women of "substantial girth." It was a part of a double A side release with "Bicycle Race," and the songs reference each other in the lyrics. How Much I Feel by AmbrosiaBruce's staff pick is a soft rock hit that went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Front man and co-founder David Pack wrote this song about a long-lost love that the singer will never truly get over. Pack would go on to perform on the Kansas album "Vinyl Confessions" in 1982. NOVELTY TRACK:Y.M.C.A. by the Village People All skate, everyone skate for this fun throwback that tells a young man where he can go when he's short on the dough. The Girls tackle the complicated music genre known as Yacht Rock, and they are totally serious about it because it's very important. Amy cites a textbook definition of Yacht Rock from smoothradio.com, but Robbie-Ann immediately has a problem with it, and then announces her self-appointment as the World's Authority on Yacht or Nyacht, and all her rulings are final. The West Coast Yacht/Nyacht Judge, Robbie-Ann's childhood bestie Karen. The Girls explore a few examples, trying to narrow down how to define a Yacht Rock song. Examples from Supertramp and Boz Scaggs lead to a discussion of the Yacht Rock Spectrum. Which bands' entire catalogs are Yacht Rock? A guideline: can you stand at the BBQ grill and bob your head while you're grilling? Robbie-Ann rules that the yachtrock.com Yacht Rock rejections are not valid, and defends her decision. Amy and Robbie-Ann go into a deep dive of Player's "Baby Come Back." Robbie-Ann's simple qualifying question: would you play it on your yacht? A celebration of Michael McDonald's Yacht Rock-defining classic "What A Fool Believes." Sidebar on Amy's childhood barbecues with pet snakes and beers. The nostalgia factor in Yacht or Nyacht. Robbie-Ann's controversial Yacht Rock ruling on Michael Jackson's "Human Nature." Little River Band: their entire catalog's Yacht ruling. Robbie-Ann offers to fight anyone who denies Toto's Yacht Rock status. Why "Pina Coladas (the Escape Song)" is a Yacht Rock absolute. The Yacht Rock "Vibe." Amy asks Robbie-Ann what the number one, quintessential Yacht Rock song is and she makes a ruling, and sings the praises of Christopher Cross. Robbie-Ann's impression of Michael McDonald's background bad-ah-dah-dahs. Kenny Loggins: which of his songs are Yacht or Nyacht? Robbie-Ann's difficult decision on "Your Mama Don't Dance." Amy tries to dissent. Robbie-Ann's ruling on the very first Yacht Rock song, the very birth of the Yacht Rock genre: hint, it was released 1973. Amy's analysis of the Yacht Rock Listener. Yacht Rock cover bands, including California's Yachtley Crew and Atlanta's Yacht Rock Revue. What is "Yacht Rock Adjacent?" Robbie-Ann explains. The "Soothing" factor. Why Marvin Gaye's classic "What's Going On" is Nyacht. Amy's insightful analysis of why Yacht Rock is necessary, and was the music more important than the lyrics? Ambrosia, and David Pack's insane voice. A very important Yacht/Nyacht ruling on Hall and Oates. Why is Yacht Rock sampled so much in Hip Hop and Rap music? Robbie-Ann's final Yacht/Rock ruling on Bruce Hornsby, and why (no political songs!).Yacht or Nyacht? Foreigner. The Eagles. Chicago. Fleetwood Mac. Kids aren't on the Yacht!

She entered the Conservatory of the Land Tirol at age 6, where she studied the piano and the flute until the age of 18. She started playing in local rock, pop and dance bands and picked up the electric bass and soon added the upright. She entered the Academy of Music Vienna in 1996 studying jazz bass and bass education. In 1998, she received a scholarship from the Academy of Music of Vienna in Austria to the University of Miami, where she spent a year in the graduate program on Austrian and US scholarships. She particularly loved playing with bands such as the Mozartband (a fusion of funk, rock and Mozart featuring members of the Viennese Philharmonic), and the Celtic rock band Tempest, who she toured with for three years. Ariane recorded and toured with "kindie-rock" sensation The Sippy Cups, a psychedelic rock circus appealing to kids and their parents alike with jugglers, aerialists, and a rocking show, as well as The Palmwine Boys, who fuse acoustic African Palmwine Music with Americana. Ariane was part of the creation of Cirque du Soleil's adaptation of The Tempest, Amaluna, in Montreal. She is an experienced sideman as well, most recently supporting guitar virtuoso Muriel Anderson and the German flamenco stars Tierra Negra on fretted and fretless basses, or Cabo Jazz pianist Diego Rodriguez and vocalist extraordinaire Daline Jones. Since 1976, Ross Pallone’s passion for live mixing and studio engineering has made an imprint on the musical landscape for some of the biggest names in the business. His big break came in the early 80’s when he met Michael McDonald while engineering Amy Holland’s debut album “On Your Every Word.” This meeting evolved into a long term relationship with McDonald, but it also set his career in motion with engineering albums and providing live mixing for hundreds of artists, including Alan Parsons, Alice Cooper, Ambrosia, Barbara Streisand, Chaka Khan, Christopher Cross, David Foster, David Pack, Diana Ross, Earth, Wind & Fire, Elton John, Dean Martin, Donna Summer, Gladys Knight, James Newton Howard, Manhattan Transfer, Michael Jackson, and Prince, among many others. Here to talk about the behind-the-scenes world of studio engineering and live mixing is Ross Pallone.
The name Ambrosia has become synonymous with 70s soft rock gold thanks to enduring hits like "How Much I Feel" and "Biggest Part of Me". In truth, the band covered all genres - from prog to pop - during their 5-album run in the late70s - early 80s. Ambrosia's success can largely be contributed to the talent of former lead singer and primary songwriter David Pack. Unfortunately, he and the rest of the guys parted ways some time ago the band is now fronted by the supremely capable Ken Stacey. In this conversation, drummer Burleigh Drummond dispels the golden aura of Southern California rock in the 70s, details the confusion some people have had about their diverse sound, and expresses gratitude for his wife, Ambrosia keyboardist Mary Harris. They also have a wonderful side project called Tin Drum that's worth checking out. Enjoy! http://www.ambrosialive.net/ http://tindrum.net/index.html

"How Much I Feel" "Biggest Part of Me" and “You're the Only Woman” were just a few of the hits of the five-time Grammy Award nominated progressive rock band Ambrosia. The man on the drums and founding member? He is percussionist, producer, songwriter and singer Burleigh Drummond. Drummond will be joining Halli at her table on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Wednesday, June 8, 3 pm ET for an in-depth interview.Formed in southern California in 1970 as a quartet, along with Burleigh, the groups members included guitarist/vocalist David Pack, bassist/vocalist Joe Puerta and keyboardist Christopher North. They chose the name Ambrosia to represent a vision of their music: all shades, textures, colors and styles. Ambrosia had five Top 40 hit singles on Warner Bros. Drummond is the only drummer/percussionist for the band, and with good reason. There is only one Burleigh Drummond.A self-described “Army brat,” Drummond's parents were in the U.S. Army, with his father a full Colonel and his mother an army nurse. The family moved often and ended up being stationed in Ankara, Turkey where as a child Drummond had an experience he found transformative: he watched and listened as artisans hammered out a large copper plate, not unlike a cymbal, “spinning and hammering in sublime synchronicity.” He's been drumming ever since. What becomes a musician? Life as a rock star? A man and his music when drummer Burleigh Drummond visits The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Wednesday, June 8, 3 pm ET. For more information visit Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.

Join us this week as we welcome one of America’s best loved multi-platinum Prog/Pop bands, Ambrosia. In 1970, four young musicians from the South Bay of Los Angeles came together to create a new, invigorating style of music. Exploring the possibilities of progressive classical and world influences, yet rooted with the soul of the blues and R&B, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North, David Pack, and Burleigh Drummond formed Ambrosia in pursuit of that goal. Ambrosia garnered five Grammy nominations, five hit singles including, “How Much I Feel”, “Biggest Part of Me”, and “You’re the Only Woman” obtaining heavy FM airplay, and the admiration and respect of the musical community, all this in addition to sold-out concerts around the world. Today the band is more alive than ever. Three of the four original members still perform as Ambrosia. We will talk with them about their upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at their music, feature many of their terrific songs, and ask them to share their message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Ambrosia at http://www.ambrosialive.net/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and chat live with them during the show. If you would like to participate in the live chat during the show, you must sign up on the show site first and then log in during the show. More great music for a really great cause! And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Be sure to join us, Sunday July 8th 2012 at 4:00 PM EST! Our message to the troops....WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.

Bernie Chiaravalle has never been a musician that needed a spotlight to complete him as a singer-songwriter-musician. He’s always let his music do the talking during his career that has spanned nearly three decades. He’s worked with artists such as the Doobie Brothers, Larry Carlton and David Pack, who incidentally introduced him to Michael McDonald. Needless to say, his musical relationship with McDonald has flourished for nearly 25 years and has took Chiaravalle to new levels of creative writing, performance and collaboration. Once you listen to his latest solo release, THE WORLD AROUND ME, you’ll find that he understands the craft of songwriting very well. Musically, his capacity to take you through a labyrinth of unexpectedly fresh guitar chording progressions will keep you engaged. Lyrically, he will draw you into his each song in a calm, methodical way. Inside MusiCast is happy to welcome a very seasoned musician, Bernie Chiaravalle.
A perennial classic producer and session musician, our guest really needs no introduction…or at least one paragraph doesn’t do his career justice. We will say that he is the first producer in recording history to have number one records in three separate decades… the 70s, 80s, and 90s. In 1980, he was nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, three of which he won for his work on Christopher Cross’ debut album, Sailing. (Talk about a classic album.) In the 80s he was nominated twice for producer of the year. In 1991 he was nominated for album of the year for Amy Grant’s Heart in Motion and in ’94 he even produced the soundtrack album for the Summer Olympic Games. He’s still in demand as a producer, but is now spending more time discovering new talent. Over his lengthy and successful career, he’s worked with names such as: Bela Fleck, Rod Stewart, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, Willie Nelson, Reba, Roberta Flack, Alison Krauss, and a recent Inside MusiCast guest, David Pack. Inside MusiCast welcomes a true classic — Michael Omartian.
Our guest has been blessed with one of the most distinctive voices in the music industry. His stand-out lead-vocals for the rock group Ambrosia have left impressionable hits in our minds over the years such as, Biggest Part of Me, How Much I Feel, Holding on to Yesterday, and You’re The Only Woman. Over his hit-packed career, he has continued to write and produce for diverse artists such as Brian McKnight, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Brian Setzer, Andre Crouch, Take 6, Bruce Hornsby, Chick Corea, Trisha Yearwood, Linda Ronstadt and others. Recently, he released his long-awaited new solo album, The Secret of Movin On on Concord/Peak records, highlighting vocal collaborations with Journey frontman Steve Perry, Heart’s Nancy Wilson, the Eagle’s Timothy B. Schmidt, and Dewey Bunell of America. It’s a definite must get album. We’re glad to welcome David Pack, our first guest of the new year, to Inside MusiCast.
