He first garnered attention after co-producing the single “You Will Know” for the R&B supergroup Black Men United.Hello I'm Gail Nobles. Welcome to the Cat Bear. Let's talk with D'Angelo's debut studio album Brown Sugar(1995), was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and received widespread aclaim from music critics who have credited the album for ushering in the neo-soul movement. It's third single Lady reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.It was in the good old R&B days when I heard D'Angelo's single Lady. He was singing nothing but something good about his lady. If you weren't raised in the 90s, you might not understand and appreciate the music. D'Angelo was singing nothing but love and respect for his lady. His next album, Voodoo (2000), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and continued to receive critical acclaim. The album's lead single Untitled (How Does It Feel), earned him the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance; likewise, Voodoo won Best R&B Album.D'Angelo released his third studio album, Black Messiah, in 2014. The album was met with critical acclaim and peaked at number five on the US Billboard 200.

The album was certified three times Platinum by the RIAA, Gold by British Phonographic Industry and Gold by the Canadian Recording Industry Association. Serving as one of the earliest forays into what would become neo-soul, 'Baduizm' was beset with praise even earning itself a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 40th Grammy Awards. In this episode, Aloe and Jeffrey discuss Aloe's relationship with music, what he learned in the corporate world before going into music full time, how artists can create change, his upcoming cause-themed album, his work in biotech, and much more, covering issues like healthcare, criminal justice reform, poverty, and beyond… Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/d4MqLu2WrKc Learn more: Host: Jeffrey M. With his lyrics drawing influence from socially conscious artists like KRS-One, he put out his first hip-hop mixtape at age 17. Later developing a fierce admiration for such soul musicians as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye, he also discovered an affinity for folk-rock singer/songwriters during his college years. “One of the most important factors in my transition from hip-hop to being a singer was listening to people like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, and Cat Stevens,” Blacc says. “Their songs are full of emotion that's expressed in strong lyrics, and that had a big impact on me.” After inking a deal with indie label Stones Throw, Blacc released his solo debut Shine Through in 2006 and sophomore album Good Things in 2010. Boosted by the breakout success of “I Need a Dollar” (which was selected as the theme song to HBO's How To Make it In America), Good Things reached gold status in countries around the world and paved the way for his signing to XIX Recordings/Interscope Records in 2012. Made in collaboration with groundbreaking producers like Pharrell Williams, Lift Your Spirit dropped on New Year's Day in 2014, debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Album. Looking back on his musical path so far, Blacc notes that landing a deal with XIX Recordings/Interscope prompted a major moment of reckoning, and led him to re-examine his artistic intentions. “When I signed a major-label contract, I recognized the power of having a larger audience, and I promised myself that I'd use my voice for social change,” he says. And in creating his upcoming album, Blacc has kept focused on making music meant to inspire a positive shift in mindset. “When things happening in the world seem so terrible and dark, it's so easy to get stuck in all the negative,” he says. “But I try to do whatever I can to help people out of that. I want my music to be the light.”

Robert Glasper - "Why We Speak (feat. Q-Tip & Esperanza Spalding)," a 2022 single on Loma Vista / Concord. In 2012, jazz pianist Robert Glasper's fifth album, Black Radio, was a breakout success. It landed him the Grammy for Best R&B Album, while at the same time, hitting #1 on the Billboard jazz charts. The following year, Black Radio 2 was met with similar success, winning the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the track "Jesus Children of America" featuring Lalah Hathaway and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Now, in 2022, he's released the latest installment, Black Radio III, where he continues to defy categorization and embrace collaboration. Featured guests include India.Arie, Meshell Ndegeocello, Killer Mike, Common, Ty Dolla $ign, and on today's KEXP Song of the Day, Esperanza Spalding and Q-Tip. “When I'm working on Black Radio, I'm not interested in who's the hot new artist at the time,” Glasper toldRelix. “It's more about people who are open to pushing the music. I'm interested in, ‘Are you actually talented? Do you actually work on your craft?' Black Radio has become a bar. If you're on Black Radio, you have to be a certain thing. Who really has something to say?” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Fill in the blanks” - that's how Grammy-nominated hip-hop, jazz and R&B artist, musician and producer Terrace Martin describes the special sauce he brings to any collaboration. What he means is that he is ready, willing and able to offer whatever tools from his well-equipped creative shed the situation calls for. Whether that's playing saxophone (which he does at a master level) or putting together players or producing beats or writing melodies, Martin explains that he just wants to work in service to the music and he can truly do whatever the situation calls for. He also talks about how he first found his own creative spark while watching his uncle DJ, and how that taught him to keep audiences completely engrossed in the music. Martin also shares insight into his creative process, and how he approached collaborations with Leon Bridges and Kendrick Lamar, as well as telling the awesome story of how he became his hero Snoop Dogg's go-to producer. Martin's new album, Drones, came out in November and his 2020 album Dinner Party: Dessert (with fellow LSQ guest Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington & 9th Wonder) is nominated for Best Progressive R&B Album at the upcoming 64th annual Grammy Awards.
