Wolfgang Flür was born in Frankfurt in 1947 but moved to Düsseldorf in the early ‘50s, which has been home ever since. As a young man he played in the band The Sprits Of Sound, and studied to be an architect, hoping to get into interior design. Wolfgang joined Kraftwerk in 1973 and plays on one of the most remarkable album runs in pop music history; “Autobahn”, “Radioactivity”, “Trans Europe Express”, “The Man Machine”, and “Computer World”. He left the band in the mid-80's and his relationship with his former bandleader Ralf Hütter has been somewhat acrimonious over the past few decades. Wolfgang has just released a new record entitled “Times”, which you'll hear clips from during our conversation. The album features collaborations from Peter Hook (formally of Joy Division and New Order of course), and Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter. The day before the interview I was informed that Wolfgang's musical partner Peter Duggal would be sitting in on the call too. Peter is a musician and producer based in Hebden Bridge, and is very amenable company. This was a fun chat. Wolfgang is really funny and interesting. It probably goes without saying that I absolutely love Kraftwerk, and although I sensed it would not be wise to focus on them too much, it's still a thrill to have them represented on the podcast.   Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

Low prices, maximum fun and a loyal community of racers. If you haven't done one of Stu's races before then I suggest you look them up!Stu spent many years as part of the Spine safety team, before setting up his own race company rangerultras.co.uk.Ranger Ultras delivers financially accessible events in and around the Peak District and Yorkshire Moors. In line with his ethos of low key, high quality events. Stu felt that trail runners should be able to enjoy the views of the Pennines that the big corporate sponsored multi-day races offer (mentioning no names) but without the huge price tag. This led to the conception of his PB270 and PB137 races in April. Both fully supported start the clock ultras up the Pennine Bridleway, from Middleton Top near Matlock, to Kirkby Stephen for the 270.The 137 goes from Hebden Bridge to Kirkby Stephen, starting a day later. All of the wow factor of a multi-day race along the Pennines, but without the traveling circus and high costs.Ranger Ultras currently offer the below races throughout the year for you to get stuck into!PB270 - Pennine Bridleway ChallengePB137 - Pennine Bridleway ChallengeYorkshire 3 Peaks Peak District South and North (1 day or full weekend options)PB55km UltraPB18km UltraHigh Peak 70/100 UltraHigh Peak 18km TrailAs well as the grand slam over the race season.....Follow the below link to find out more rangerultras.co.ukURS

On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by author, folklorist, musician and songwriter Paul Weatherhead, whose book Weird Calderdale is a must-have for fans of Yorkshire folklore!Paul is a native of the Calder Valley in Yorkshire, and was brought up in Hebden Bridge. After finishing school and his BA, Paul spent several years teaching in Greece, Moscow and Northern Siberia before he returned to Calder Valley in the late 1990s. With a longstanding obsession with the weird history of the area he grew up, he wrote Weird Calderdale, the first edition of which was released in 2003 which went on to become a local best-seller.After earning his MA, Paul's writing then began to be published in various magazines and journals, including Psychology Today, The Skeptic, Northern Life and Psychedelic Scene. He frequently writes on topics including mass hysteria, delusions, weird history and folklore. And on the mass hysteria and delusions front, his latest book, released in September 2024, is called Social Panics and Phantom Attackers – A Study of Imaginary Assailants, which was co-written with renowned sociologist Robert Bartholomew: a mega-interesting topic which we discuss in some depth during this episode. As well as his research interests, Paul is a musician and songwriter, playing electric mandolin with cult folk rock band The Ukrainians for many years, as well as composing solo work consisting of comic folk horror songs inspired by 60s psychedelia, 80s video nasties and the Hebden Bridge Times. All of which makes Paul the ideal person to speak to about Yorkshire, and about folk music, too. To learn more about Paul and his work and books, and to read his excellent blog, do be sure to visit his website at paulweatherhead.com.Otherwise, settle in for a chat which engages with topics including local witches battling Cliff Richard, Yorkshire's zombies, the Halifax guillotine, local anti-hero Tom Bell, unidentified flying objects, and so much more! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Clive will talk to local resident and bestselling novelist Joanne Harris, maybe best known for Chocolat which was adapted into an Oscar nominated film of the same name. Also in the show, the acclaimed comedian and actor Richard Blackwood, best known for roles in Hollyoaks and EastEnders as well as on stage, is out on the road and passing through town on a stand up tour promising heavyweight laughs and no messing. TV presenter, GP and host of Europe's most popular wellness podcast Dr Ranjan Chatterjee will be easing us all into the New Year, just about the time when we all begin to fall off the New Year resolutions wagon and we'll be hearing about what happened to his own long held ambition to be Jon Bon Jovi. Plus the time that the band were due to play a festival just outside Bristol but ended up in Hebden Bridge due to an email error. Also, why have Smiling Ivy been banned from multiple places around the country, how did they end up playing a Snow Festival with no snow and does a drum kit have a volume knob? Smiling Ivy are releasing a new album soon and they have gigs coming up. John Wilson talks to photographer Martin Parr about the formative influences and experiences that inspired his own creativity. Globally renowned for his witty and satirical scenes of British life, Parr made his name in the 1970s with a series of monochrome photographs documenting the community of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. His fame grew with his 1985 project The Last Resort, which captured the spirit of the great British holiday in images of ice-cream, chips, and sunburnt bodies on the litter-strewn concrete promenade of New Brighton, Liverpool. Since then, his instantly recognisable work has examined subjects including global consumerism, mass tourism and class. He has published over a hundred books of his work, exhibited all round the world, and is regarded as one of Britain's greatest photographers. Parr is celebrated as Master Of Photography at the 2023 Photo London fair, and has recently opened his own Foundation to exhibit the work of emerging photographers alongside his own. Martin Parr reveals how, growing up in suburban Surrey, he was introduced to photography by his Yorkshire grandfather during holiday visits. He remembers seeing exhibitions by Bill Brandt and Henri Cartier-Bresson in the late 1960s, but it was the work of British street photographer Tony Ray-Jones, whose images he first saw whilst studying photography at Manchester Polytechnic, that was most influential. Martin Parr further developed his distinctive documentary style, and his use of saturated colour processing techniques, after seeing work by American photographer William Egglestone. Martin Parr also chooses the 1991 film Night On Earth by Jim Jarmusch as a key influence on his quirky approach to storytelling, and reflects on how his style and subjects have developed over the years. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Dr. Avi Baruch, co-founder and COO of Previsico, and Jonathan Jackson, co-founder and CEO of Previsico. Previsico is a surface water flood forecasting specialist, enabling people and organisations to minimise the impact of flooding.  Flooding cost the global economy more than $82 billion in 2021, accounting for nearly a third of all losses from natural catastrophes, reports the Swiss Re Institute in a 2022 study. Estimates from Statista show that 29 million people were affected by Flooding in 2021. Flooding is the second largest weather-related peril after droughts.  During the course of the podcast, Avi, Jonathan, and Sabine discuss: 1) Flooding and the difference between natural hazards and man-made disasters, 2) Previsico's four step-method to reduce flood risk, 3) build back better and why we ought to protect the small and medium-sized business from flooding, 4) protect, predict, prevent and 5) top tips to reduce the risk of flood. KEY TAKEAWAYS During the course of my PhD, I realized that academia wasn't for me, but saw so much potential in the technology we were building to monitor flood water in real time to give early warnings. I felt the only way to really get it to be used effectively on the ground was to spin-out the company. We explored quite a few different markets to find out which would be served best by it and that's where I met Johnathan. In order to reduce flood risk, there are four main steps we recommend you take: Step 1 – Understand your risk, there are a lot of really good risk-monitoring products already out there on the market. Step 2 – Invest in the right risk measures, these include flood defences or setting up non-return valves. Step 3 – Have a flood action plan, knowing what to do when you're expecting a flood, moving stock, turning electricity off, who's responsible for the response? Step 4 – Use an early warning system, this is the final part of the jigsaw when building flood resistance. If you take all those steps you can substantially reduce the risk and hopefully prevent a disaster from ever occurring. Resilience measures are often really simple things, like turning off the gas, electricity, water. That alone can save a huge amount. Moving your car to a safer place, really simple stuff that makes a huge difference. People in communities like Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, for example, where back in 2015 they were closed down for months after a flood are not reopening after three days, it's a massive change because they understand what to do. Other communities that are not used to floods are more challenging because you've got to know what to do with the warning you've been given. COP26 made a big play around the fact that the UK government cannot defend the country against flood, the country has to learn to adapt to flood, and adaptation means starting to take responsibility for flood plans and resilience measures. That's being backed up by the insurance industry making really important moves in terms of ‘build back better', where a property has been hit by flood, that homeowner will be given up to £10,000 additional funding by a number of insurers to help them put in flood resilience measures to protect against flood going forward. BEST MOMENTS ‘Flood risk is rising, there's more extreme weather, the weather is more volatile, climate change is causing heavier downpours – particularly in the summer – and longer, wetter winters.'‘There's no such thing as a natural disaster. There's natural hazards and human disasters. If you know where the hazard is going to be and you are able to prepare for it effectively, it doesn't need to be a disaster.'‘If people are used to having to cope with floods they tend to know what to do. Our solution is a great value-add that we can bring to that situation.'‘We shouldn't be building new developments on floodplains, especially when we haven't fully addressed the impact that flooding will have on those properties.' I am  so thrilled to welcome Becky Dickinson to the podcast today! Becky is a paddle boarder based in the South West of the UK. She took up paddling in 2013 after her friend Guy set up Jurassic Paddle Sports in Sidmouth, Devon.Although Becky was born in Yorkshire and spent her early years living in Hebden Bridge, her family moved to Devon when she was 6 years old and has been a water baby ever since. She started sailing at the age of 7 and spent many weekends playing in the surf on the North Devon coast. As surfing became more competitive on the water, she looked for a sport that was more accessible and paddle boarding was perfect! Last year Becky set up a WhatsApp group for paddle boarders based in the South West of the UK. It's allowed women to meet up, make friends, share advice and knowledge of SUP and explore new paddle locations with great company!Becky is also taking on a paddle boarding challenge with her friend John, to raise money for cancer research which has impacted her life as with many others over recent years. They will be paddling across to the Scilly Isles from Cornwall, planning is still in its early days but will share the details of when they come available. We will share the links to Becky's fundraising page on social media.  You can find Becky on Instagram here @beachy_bex.Her website is: www.supbecks.comShe is an Ambassador for Sealion Boards and BAM Clothing.
