We'll explore toxic relationships, how we can recognize them, and examine how Jesus set boundaries in his own life.  This message from Gary is life-changing, and if you struggle with a toxic relationship in your life, he will equip you with tools to break free in a healthy, biblical way.  In this episode we discuss: 1. The difference between a difficult relationship and a toxic one. 2. Playing spiritual offense vs spiritual defense 3. Why it's so important to break free from toxic cycles   Favorite quotes: 1. If somebody is trying to get you to stop being you or get you to stop doing what you are convinced God wants you to do- for you that person is toxic. It's an attack on your being and an attack on your mission. 2. Jesus had such a freedom to walk away and it wasn't about failing or succeeding it was about the person just not receiving. 3. I walk away from toxic people not to go binge Netflix. I walk away to invest with reliable people. I walk away from toxic relationships into healthy relationships.  In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How can I motivate myself to make changes in my life? (43:08) 2. Practical advice for those struggling with stress and anxiety. 2. Why she finally agreed to adopt right when she became an empty nester. 3. Why we shouldn't feel guilty for resting.   Favorite quotes: 1. Bravery is moving scared. You have to step into the things that are the most terrifying or they will hold power over you. 2. God doesn't promise that fear and anxiety won't come knocking but He always promises a way of escape. 3. The good thing about fear is that the best way to approach it is exposure.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I know you're a business coach but do you also coach people who aren't entrepreneurs? (38:05) 2. Are we supposed to forgive people even if they aren't sorry? How do I keep from getting hurt again? Today, Max shares all about his latest book on happiness, what he's learned about Biblical happiness in his decades in ministry, and some simple ways we can pursue it.    In this episode we discuss: 1. His book-writing process and how why his editor of 30 years is still brutally honest 2. The roadblocks he sees to true happiness and why it's harder than ever to find contentment 3. Why the simple act of saying "hello" is profoundly important to him     Favorite quotes: 1. Happiness is a deeply rooted contentment in life.  2. I think we can make a great case that God wants us to be happy because happiness makes us healthier, happiness makes us a better husband or wife or parent to our children. 3. Most people are not joyful or happy. Some people are seriously unhappy and so anything we can do to help them step toward happiness is a great service. 4. The big idea in Scripture when it comes to happiness is happiness happens when we give it away.     In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What are some practical things I can do every day to be happier? I want to create an environment of happiness not just for me but for my kids too. (45:29) 2. What is the best faith-based book that you are reading right now and would you recommend it? (49:32) 3. I know so much of building a platform involves putting yourself out there. I'm with the wonderful Lisa Jo Baker, as we talk about the changes, challenges, and the beauty of being in the middle. Lisa tackles how we can truly develop a healthy mindset that allows us to enjoy and stay present in this fulfilling and fruitful season of life   In this episode we discuss: 1. How to live your middle-age years to the fullest 2. How we can see our bodies as lovely and strong despite changes 3. Why she wasn't afraid to share her muffin top picture with the world   Favorite quotes: 1. I don't need to seize the day. I just need to make time to see it. I don't have the energy to seize the day. I can barely seize the moment to do laundry. But here's what I can do, this is why I wrote a whole book about it. I can see the day. That is a much lower pressure threshold. 2. Somehow as women, we want to erase the marks of time, the things that show what it took to get here. I just believe so strongly, I think about that verse so often that says ‘the Lord has made everything beautiful in its time,' and that applies to us as women. 3. My kid's feelings aren't supposed to be the boss of me. I'm not supposed to be the boss of me. The Holy Spirit is supposed to be the boss of me.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I have three little kids and can't keep up with all the details. How do you do it with 5 kids? How can I remember all the little things for them? (51:01) 2. How can I introduce God into people whos had zero exposure and not overwhelm them? (58:21) 3. I can't work at home without getting distracted, should I pay for a fancy coworking space? We are marching on with my "Summer Of Favorite Women"! Today, we are with the fabulous Lisa Whittle. I invited Lisa back on the show to talk about pursuing careers we love without guilt, balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and why your parenting doesn't have to be perfect to produce great children.   In this episode we discuss: 1. How to know when your work has become an idol 2. Finding work/life balance 3. How to mold your business mind with your ministry heart   Favorite quotes: 1. I appreciate other truth tellers in my life because I do think when you're healthy and you're operating by the control of the Holy Spirit (which has not always been the same for me by the way) but I think when that happens you can take it and you say I'm ready to hear what someone else has to say to me so I'm going to walk through this world boldly and speak bold things. I want someone to say that back to me because I know that I need to be told in the same manner. 2. (That encouragement) let me have this exhale of, “Well, yeah maybe I just really love what I'm doing. Gosh if God has gifted me to this area, He's called me to this, I should live it.” 3. I think this season (teen years) of mothering is challenging for me and it's amazing. I love it, it's some ways my favorite. But I am dying to myself by kind of letting my own position go in many ways and releasing my kids to the world, believing we've done enough, and just praying. 4. I can't really have a friendship where someone won't be real and raw with me and that doesn't mean I need them to tell them all their business, I just need the things we talk about, whether it be topics or whatever is going on, whatever we're going to be talking about. I need you to be completely real with me about it.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What advice do you have with helping our kids deal with acne? (49:15) 2. How should we handle our own inner critic? (54:40How can I make sure my professional email communication is both professional and effective?  3. How to bravely make female friends 2. Advice for introverts and extroverts when approaching new friendships 3. The horrifying and hilarious fail that Melanie experienced when she tried to host the perfect girlfriend gathering in her home   Favorite quotes: 1. There are two different kinds of people. There are people who are naturally gifted at initiating and there are people who that's not really their thing. I think if you are an initiator that's a superpower that not everyone has and you need to realize that. 2. I think we affirm people. We're developing a sense of trust. She shares amazing insight from Scripture and women in history to inspire us to lead strong, stop hiding, and fulfill our purpose.    In this episode we discuss: 1. Why most Christian women downplay their strengths 2. The inspiring role of women in Scripture 3. How the Church can heal and lead out in women's issues    Favorite quotes: 1. We need both genders working together in partnership to show the watching world what it means to love God when we're all in for Jesus. 2. We ask about women, “Is she going to be submissive?” When really the question should be “Is any Christ follower submitting to the Holy Spirit?” 3. Submission, I think, has really become the capstone ‘this is what a godly woman is like' and I think we really have gotten away from the fact that the fruit of the spirit should be the hallmark characteristic of any Christ follower whether they are a man or woman.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What is something small that I can do every day to enjoy life more? (47:56) 2. How can we keep our boys ages 2 and 4 engaged in church? (51:27) 3. What simple business truth do people not understand? The most important thing our children need from us 3. Why emotional safety is a vital part of your family's health   Favorite quotes: 1. I think once we start to really see ourselves as just a human, or our spouses as human, and our kids as humans, we start to recognize our individual strengths and weaknesses and we're not trying so hard to create little super beings that they're not going to be. There's a whole lot of rest and peace and purpose that comes from that! 2. A feeling is just a feeling, it's not in charge of you. 3. We have to first name and recognize what we're feeling in order to gain control of it so it doesn't get to control us. 4. Are we creating an environment that is emotionally safe? Meaning that emotions are talked about and that starts with us. Are we modeling emotions?   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How can I get my kids to do chores? They're 6 and 8. How our beauty routine can help or hurt our overall wellness. 2. Understanding our hormones and why they are so important. 3. How certain anti-aging products can actually have a reverse effect.   Favorite quotes: 1. If you really want to come and work with your body and get healthy and lose weight possible, one great place to start is our hormones and the reason is because that's what is communicating with our entire body. 2. What have we learned in the past by giving up a whole entire macronutrient? That we always end up sicker on the other side. Carbohydrates are an essential part of hormone function. 3. Fruit was a gift from God, I just can't say that is safe to give up. 4. Naturally speaking in some cases it is better for women to be a little bit on the heavier side then underweight, fertility speaking. Ruth shares her incredible journey of overcoming depression, suicide attempts, and self-harm to becoming a healthy mom and wife and successful entrepreneur. Ruth also shares why her motto "Do it Scared" is so important for her both in life and business.   In this episode we discuss: 1. Why you should bravely take action in your life and business, even if you're terrified 2. How to recognize your unique brand of fear 3. How to break through debilitating cycles and find courage   Favorite quotes: 1. Stop chasing the numbers that you think mean you're popular and start chasing the numbers that are actually going to make a difference in your business. 2. So often people think that “well I need more page views or I need more likes on Instagram or I need more followers in order to make more money,” and that's absolutely not true. If you're not leveraging the audience you have, you're never going to be leveraging the audience you wish you had. 3. It is because of those hard times, not despite them, that I'm now able to have the business that I have. 4. There was never one moment when it magically all turned around. I think so often in life we expect there to be this magical moment, you know this huge turning point of saying “oh from now on my life is going to be different.” It didn't work that way for me. 5. No matter how badly you screw up your life, you can always turn it around. 6. Fear impacts us, whether we call it fear or anxiety or we call it this apprehension about moving forward. 7. Once you can start to identify that fear and start to see those patterns in your life, that's when you can start to do something about it.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What do I need to do to make my skin look great as I near my 40s? (48:26) 2. What should I do if I don't agree with all of my church's teachings? (54:50) 3. I've found a lot of times the reasons we don't do things or step into new things or start small is really a mindset problem and not a skill-set problem. 2. What we take from social media—what we choose to do with it is actually up to us. And what we choose to internalize is up to us. There is a lot of external pressures, but it is our responsibility as to how we handle those. 3. When you are so focused on what you are missing out on, you are missing out on where you are, what you can actually do, and the power you have. In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What is your favorite beauty splurge this month? I know how you love your makeup. (33:33) 2. My son is in pre-school. Transitioning from Reality TV to entrepreneur. 2. Finding your lane in the season you are in. 3. Balancing work and family life.   Favorite quotes:1. At the end of my life, I don't want to be known for doing 10 things just kind of okay. I want to be known for doing one thing really really well and leaving a legacy in it. 2. Our gifting doesn't outpace our maturity. 3. We may be gifted in something but God still has some maturing to do in that area, or it just may not be the right time and we need to be patient. And even though we may be qualified on paper to do something or have the skills to do something, doesn't necessarily mean that we should. 4. Michelle talks about the problems she saw that inspired her to start her company, gives tools to help women boldly pursue their calling, and helps us examine our metrics for success. Michelle also shares about her experience in direct sales and gives some insight into how to stand apart in a saturated online market.   In this episode we discuss: 1. Being good stewards of God's grace. 2. The truth of mom guilt. 3. Why convenience can't outweigh community. Favorite quotes: 1. Our businesses were never meant to satisfy us because God loves us too much so he will never allow us to be satisfied with something other than Him. That dissatisfaction is always going to grow as we pursue something other than Him.   2. Am I pursuing success for myself or am I pursuing a purpose that God has put inside of me to do? 3. God has purposely given you life experiences and gifts, talents, and abilities for the purpose of bringing Him glory and serving others. 4. We are being poor stewards of his grace when we lock up the gifts, talents, and abilities he has given us. 5. Guilt is this feeling that weighs you down but it's a feeling, it's not necessarily true. Conviction is with a goal of correction from the Holy Spirit. Anytime we feel guilty, we have to ask ourselves is this guilt or is it conviction?   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What's a quick happiness tip that I can use every day? (38:42) 2. Does God still do miracles?  (41:45) 3. In 2006, after 12 years of being a stay-at-home mom to FIVE BOYS, Alli Worthington walked into a bookstore and was overwhelmed by the desire to write a book. But about what? She had no idea where to start, so she went home to her computer, got on her dial-up internet (ah, the nostalgia!) and began googling "how to get a book deal."  One of the results told her she could get a book deal if she had a blog and a large following. So... she googled, "what is a blog?" Now, 13 years later, Alli has authored two books, "Fierce Faith" and "Breaking Busy." She's also a podcaster ("the Alli Worthington Show"), an entrepreneur, and co-founded The Blissdom Conference. P.S. - I attended Blissdom in 2013 in Dallas and loved it so much I'm returning this year (2019) in Nashville, and will be a Community Leader again!  In this episode, I asked Alli what gets her up in the morning (she has a very "real-life" answer!); how she stays organized; how she builds community; how she sets boundaries online; and how she decides when to take a risk in her business. Alli also tells us about Blissdom's beginnings, its hiatus, and what we can expect from the conference in 2019. I just love Alli to pieces. She's so down to earth and as a fellow boy mom, I'm inspired by her relationships with her boys.  Follow Alli on Instagram and visit her website at www.alliworthington.com.

The difference between fake fun and real fun 3. A key to learning to have more fun as a mom     Favorite quotes: 1. Isn't that kinda how our lives work? It's like taking that next step, saying yes and having no clue where that will take us but it will always turn out in remarkable ways. 2. What I recognize over the course of choosing to have more fun is that one of the most important things I can do as a parent is to enjoy my kids and to really embrace all the nuances in any given season they are in. 3. A really essential part of me being a more fun mom was loving whatever stage we were in. 4. When we're not afraid to ask, door open for us that never would have before. 5. I think it's really important to differentiate between fake fun and real fun because real fun restores our body, rejuvenates our soul and fake fun really depletes our reserves. 6. We really need to differentiate for ourselves and determine what do we enjoy.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I have terrible social anxiety. In this episode, Emily shares a fresh perspective on hard decision making and the underlying hope and power that can be found in the process. She also shares her extensive experience as a writer and entrepreneur and what her creative process looks like when she's exploring a new book idea.  In this episode we discuss: 1. What it means to be a “soul minimalist” and how to make space for things that really matter...and how to let go 2. How our own inner critic can hold us back and why we should refuse to give our critic words 3. Writers are Entrepreneurs.  Emily discusses writing for yourself verses writing for readers…and why all authors need to think like entrepreneurs.   Favorite quotes: 1. Frustration is actually a fantastic catalyst for creativity. 2. Do we need more books in the world? Do we need more great speakers? I don't know, maybe. But I think what we need more than that is people that have come alive. So, if writing that book makes you come alive, than we absolutely need it in the world because that is what we are missing. You. 3. I think we live life so much with some of those narratives that happen beneath the surface and we don't take the time to recognize where they are coming from or whether or not they're true. 4. The only voice the critic has in our life right now is our own voice, whether that's the critic that lives in our head that came as a result of our imagination, or if its a critical voice from our childhood or an actual human person in the world but the only power they have now is the power that we give them. But what if we didn't give them words? How would it change our decision making? 5. Sometimes you have this vivid imagination of what you know the art can be and the fear is what if I can't get to it. If I can't find the pathway to get to the story I know this wants to be and that's where really faith comes in, trusting the process, knowing you are going to have to go through the dark underbelly of the mess to get there. 6. Our bodies have something to tell us and our emotions have something to tell us and if we don't let them speak, they will speak out of turn.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. With your specialized diet, how do you handle family meals? (43:08) 2. What are your favorite Christian podcasts? (45:33) 3. Is Blissdom just for business women? I'm an aspiring author and speaker, would it be right for me? (47:56)   Links to great things we discussed 1. Emily Freeman 2. The Next Right Thing 3. The Wailin' Jennys- Old Churchyard 4. The need for courage 2. The confidence we can have in the midst of trials 3. What weighs us down and how to get through it 4. How to overcome the lies that cause us to quit Favorite quotes: 1. There's a difference between putting your arm around somebody and saying to them “I'm so sorry for what you are going through,” and saying to somebody “Get back out there, this is not the time to give up. This isn't the time to quit.”   2. We want comfort but what we really need is courage.   3. Faith is this idea of sticking with the puzzle even when we don't understand why the pieces come together.   4. As a follower of Jesus, I know who does have what it takes. I know who my confidence can be in. Instead of focusing on what I don't have, we focus on what He offers.   5. Perseverance leads to happiness.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How do you deal with writing about family issues and struggles in your books? (39:16) 2. If a Christian commits a sexual sin, is this forgivable? If so, why are ministers who have moral failure asked to step down? (46:12) 3. I'm a creative entrepreneur and I hate systems. So far it hasn't hurt my growth. The art of tending in our lives Favorite quotes: 1. When we guard our hearts too much, we also miss out on too much. We only have one life and the years are ticking by and so wherever we are, I think there's something there for us that is worth loving. 2. It's not just about shaping the places where we live and loving the place we live. It's also about recognizing all the places shapes us and the ways those places nourish us. 3. I really think that our God is a placemaker God. He not only created this world for us but he carved out special places in it like the garden of Eden or the promise land.   4. When we're tending our special places, we are living out our role as image bearer really of this placemaking God.   5. The things that we most fear are really not worth fearing because God will be there and it won't be as bad as we think like his comfort will be that real.       In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I recently parted ways with my best friend of 10 years. How do I grieve someone well who isn't actually dead? (29:41) 2. If a Christian commits suicide will they still go to heaven? (33:14) 3.
