The five targets are Being, Forgiving, Serving, Giving, and Going. In partnership with LifeWay Research, we created a Red Letter Challenge Assessment that will measure you according to these five targets. And the best news of all: it's free! You will get results back immediately and be presented with the following steps to help you become an even greater follower of Jesus. You can take the FREE Red Letter Challenge Assessment here. During their conversation, they discuss the following questions: What is one thing you've read recently that has had an impact? What are you listening to? What is one tool or resource you've started using recently? Who is one person who has influenced you recently? What is one lesson you've learned recently? BEST QUOTES “I think a lot of training is really more about confidence than it is competence.” – Todd Adkins “If you become a curator of connections, resources or talent, you automatically have influence in the place you traffic.” – Brad Lomenick “Conversation, community, and connection around a table with people today is arguably more desirable than a conference or a big gathering where it's only about content.” – Brad Lomenick “As you think about the way you curate your church, your content, or the friendships you have, lean more into how are you creating transformational experiences that allow for a person to feel like it's it was created for them.” – Brad Lomenick “The things that are going to perhaps make the most impact on people are the things that don't scale well. It's the things that are one-on-one, very customized, and specific to that individual.” – Brad Lomenick “People want to feel like they're getting something that is so customized to them, something that is built on every sort of their felt needs. This is the challenge in today's environment, especially around leadership.” – Brad Lomenick “One of the things that you'll see whether someone is a pastor or just a normal person is that there is a great desire to be known. Not to be a user, not to be an acquaintance, or distant friend on social media, but to truly be known.” – Todd Adkins RECOMMENDED RESOURCES The Power to Change: Mastering the Habits That Matter Most by Craig Groeschel The Diary of a CEO Podcast with Steve Bartlett How Leaders Lead Podcast with David Novak God Comes Where He's Wanted (Sermon) by Jon Tyson The Intentional Father: A Practical Guide to Raise Sons of Courage and Character by Jon Tyson Deep Discipleship: How the Church Can Make Whole Disciples of Jesus by J.T. FLG_026 Brad Lomenick on leadership transitions, personal growth and staring down your demons.   At some point in your life and leadership you come to what most commentators call a ‘wall’, or a crisis of limitations or whatever you might choose to name the fact that you realise you’re not as good as you thought you were and you’re not as well formed as you thought you were. Enter Darb, the nemesis leader of Brad who had this confronting reality shown to him by his team when that called him out on how he was leading and what it was like to be on the other side of him. Fast Forward several years and you get THIS conversation. A leader who faced his challenges head on, made significant personal and professional changes and is better off for it in every way, and so are we. Brad’s humility and honesty with his own journey will give you great hope in facing your own challenges and being better for it.   Brad Lomenick is an author, advisor and connector of leaders. For over a decade he led the Catalyst movement, which gathered hundreds of thousands of young leaders in the US. He’s authored two books, including The Catalyst Leader and H3 Leadership: Be Humble, Stay Hungry, Always Hustle. In today's episode, we cover leadership with Brad Lomenick. Brad is a leadership consultant, speaker, founder of BLINC, and author of The Catalyst Leader and H3 Leadership. He writes about leadership, the next generation, creativity, innovation, social media, teamwork, and personal growth. Effective leadership is built on a few powerful traits anyone can learn, but what are they, what is the difference between an effective leader and an ineffective one, and what can you do to be an effective leader without being in a leadership position? What to Listen For Brad's Journey & Strategies for Conquering Burnout - 3:34 What are the different levels of burnout and what can you do if you're feeling burnt out? What can you do as a leader to encourage your team to hold you accountable for your faults and blindspots? The Biggest Leadership Myths & How to Assume Leadership - 9:59 What are the biggest myths about leadership? What are the two types of people who want to be leaders and why is one not cut out for the role? What can you do to be a leader if you are regularly jumping from one company to another? What can you do to be proactive about being a leader rather than waiting to be recognized as one? Ineffective vs Effective Leadership - 21:08 How does social media identify and highlight the ineffective leaders, placing poor examples of leadership in front of people around the world? How can a leader exemplify the hustle mentality and powerful humility? How do you build trust with your team when you are brand new and your team doesn't know you? It seems as if the loudest “leaders” get the most attention, but getting someone's attention or drawing an audience do not make someone a leader. The most effective leaders can lead from a place of trust and humility. They get buy-in from those around them by getting to know them and building a genuine relationship. If you want to be an effective leader, you must be willing to listen to the people around you and open up to them so they can connect with you. 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins

In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Ben Mandrell are joined by Brad Lomenick, author of The Catalyst Leader and H3 Leadership. They discuss the following questions: What have you learned over the years about movements and the value they bring? How are you moving forward now? What does it look like to bring smaller groups together?Do you see the shift happening from just preaching to also gathering and developing leaders? BEST QUOTES "If something is God-breathed, just hold on.""Nobody wants to see a movement end, but there is a season to movements and it is OK that they wrap up.""We have to remove ourselves from the idea that whether it grows or it stops that's because of me as the point leader.""Movements don't have to be global in nature. They can be neighborly in nature and still be incredibly God-breathed.""When you gather influencers, let them be the center of the conversation.""The experiences we are creating, how are they different from content that is readily available at all times for free?""Content might be the draw, but the connection is what retains people.""As a pastor, I need to give the sheriff's badge to as many of my lay leaders to let them carry the weight of the responsibility of discipleship.""Right now and going forward, small is the new big. People want something that is real and that is personal.""The reason your church is now unique is because people know each other." Today, I'm joined by Brad Lomenick, author of The Catalyst Leader and H3 Leadership. He sees his role as equipping, inspiring, and releasing the next generation of young Christian leaders through events, resources, consulting, content, and connecting a community of like-minded Catalysts all over the world. Brad didn't have a brand book for Catalyst and never saw himself as an author, and many people were encouraging him to write a book. "I felt like people were saying that I should jump into that pool, and I still don't consider myself a writer." He felt a brand book was essential to capture the essence and stories of his brand. "We didn't have something that would outlast us." For Brad, his book will be his remnant that will be around forever. "Books are a lasting legacy because a book is going to be around for a long time." "Anyone who does conferences you know that the ongoing connection and conversation will have points to learn and intersect." He thinks of his book as a connecting resource between what people take away from a conference they've participated in and what they can learn while reading his content. His second book, H3, is his life book. "It's my personal story, it's much more of my personal mantra, and it's my life brand book." He believes this book feels more personal, and therefore, more people are affected by reading this book. Listen in to find out how Brad wrote his life message into his book, why he encourages people to write the business book first, and how Brad promoted his personal book. Learn how Brad promotes his book on podcasts, how you can think innovatively to approach outlets for promotion, and why you need to make it easy for others to promote and sell your book. Show Notes [03:20] Why Brad doesn’t consider himself a writer with two books to his name. [03:57] What a brand book does for your company. [05:50] The brand building movement with his book. Highlights from Episode 6: "The healthier cultures/ leaders honor each other and have the ability to have nicknames. There is a true sense of friendship, allowing leaders to have freedom to do their best." "When you have a culture of honor, authenticity, self-awareness, and congruency, it makes working for that person fun." "High-level followers are curious. They have a true sense deep down within them that they are great question-askers." "Great leaders are good thinkers, which pushes them towards asking great questions." "When you become a great leader, you ask more questions than you give answers. Your posture is more of curiosity." "Some leaders value being intimidating. At some point, they had an intimidating leader they are trying to outdo, model, or emulate." "We always lead like we've been led. Unless someone breaks the cycle." "99% of leaders who are intimidating would like you to treat them like you would anyone else who is a peer." "Rather if it was an intern or rather it was someone who had been on the team for a long time. If they had appropriately approached me with feedback that was helpful, I was incredibly open to it." "You may not have any of the authority, no title, or position that allows you to sit at the table but, you have to have a mindset of an owner at every level." "If your feedback is more about helping you, people see through it." "Leaders want their teams to see what they see." "Focus on being faithful and a good steward of your current assignment." "Figure out how to make a bad leader a partner in your journey and how to make them better." "Don't look at your leader as someone who is against you." Two of the key principles of a Catalyst Leader is being “committed to growth” and a “builder of strong relationships”. Mastermind groups have been around since the beginning of time. Even Benjamin Franklin belonged to a mastermind. But it was Napoleon Hill who explained it clearly and encouraged people to gather together in a structured, repeatable environment for the success of all. Napoleon Hill wrote about the mastermind group principle as: “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.” Today we’re going to unpack the idea of a mastermind in our conversation between Jay Sharp and Dr. Jason Brooks

Here’s a fact: recent statistics indicate that more than 65% of working adults would choose a new boss over a pay increase. And that’s not totally surprising. In my estimation, what’s behind that statistic is a societal cry for better leadership—true leaders—to rise-up in society. But what we need is for leaders today to stop making the mistake of trying to be someone else and instead, step into the uniqueness of their identity. Here’s the point: all too often, leaders—maybe even you—set out to emulate their heroes but end up eclipsing their own unique, God-given identities in the process. Joining us today to discuss this very issue is president of Catalyst Leadership and certified leadership coach, Tyler Reagin. Buy the Book The president of Catalyst Leader believes that the most impactful and most influential leaders are the ones who lead from who they truly are, not who they pretend or wish to be. With clear biblical teaching and personal accounts, Tyler Reagin not only demonstrates the necessity of life-giving leadership, but also provides the steps you'll need to begin knowing and leading from your truest self. From his experiences in high-impact leadership roles at some of our nation's largest churches and ministries, Reagin has learned firsthand the importance of identity-based leadership. His desire is to help each reader become an empowered, confident leader that brings life and vibrancy to every room they enter. Whether you've got the corner office or you're just getting started, Reagin gives you the tools you need to become an impactful and unique influencer right where you are! Over 100,000 leaders from around the world connect to Catalyst per year. Be Humble, Stay Hungry, Always Hustle A mentor of mine handed me a book titled The Catalyst Leader, 8 Essentials for Becoming a Change Maker.  There are few books on leadership that are as equipping and this is one. Click here for the resources from our interview with Brad You will love this interview with Brad Lomenick, an author and the founder of Catalyst, and a legendary expert on leadership. As we started talking about his life story and insight on what creates powerful leaders that I realized just how wise he is. I loved hearing Brad’s wisdom on leadership, especially the relationship between confidence and humility. Whether you’re leading a company or seeking to take a leadership role in your relationships, you’re going to get massive value out of Brad’s perspective. Brad has just published H3 Leadership: Be Humble. Stay Hungry. Always Hustle and you need to put this on your reading list! What you will learn How to influence influencers The importance of leaders never feeling like they’ve “arrived” How to redefine yourself and step fully into your calling The most important habit you can have The breakdown of how identity, calling, assignment work together to define who you are Resources H3 Leadership: Be Humble. Stay Hungry. Always Hustle  The Catalyst Leader, 8 Essentials for Becoming a Change Maker Catalyst Conference Follow Brad Website Twitter Facebook Bio It’s a bit weird writing about yourself, so the best way to get the scoop on me is to check out my facebook page or follow me on Twitter. I promise to add value! In a nutshell, I’m an Oklahoma boy now residing in the South. I am a passionate follower of Christ, and had the privilege of leading and directing a movement of young leaders called Catalyst for the last 12 years. We see our role as equipping, inspiring, and releasing the next generation of young Christian leaders, and do this throughevents, resources, consulting, content and connecting a community of like-minded Catalysts all over the world. I appreciate the chance to continually connect with and collaborate alongside leaders. I have now moved into a strategic advisor role with Catalyst, along with several other organizations. My first book, The Catalyst Leader, released in April 2013, and will be releasing a follow up book in September of 2015 entitled H3 Leadership. I love Oklahoma Sooners football, and consider myself a strong candidate for the senior golf tour at some point. I would prefer to start most mornings in a duck blind if possible, and if not hunting, you’ll find me on the ski slopes or on a plane. If given the option, I would love to have my own hunting show or maybe even sub in for Piers Morgan on CNN. Over the last 15 years, I’ve spent a significant amount of time convening leaders. Prior to running Catalyst, I spent 5 years involved in the growth of the nationally acclaimed Life@Work Magazine and did management consulting with Cornerstone Group. Before that, after graduating from the University of Oklahoma, I rode horses for a living on a ranch in the Colorado mountains for several years. I write about leadership, the next generation, creativity, innovation, social media, teamwork, personal growth, generational issues, execution, and a few other topics. You can hear all kinds of conversations with great leaders I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing like Malcolm Gladwell, Seth Godin, Francis Chan, Tony Dungy, Andy Stanley, Rick Warren, Marcus Buckingham, Dave Ramsey, Bill Hybels and others through the Catalyst Podcast, which is FREE and available on itunes or on the Catalyst website. I typically post 4-5 times a week. To stay connected, you can subscribe to receive blog updates via email or RSS Feed. For a little more insight on me, here are ten questions, well, with me…. First Car? 1980 Monte Carlo (green and gray upholstery interior) Where did you grow up? Bristow, OK (home of the Purple Pirates!). Just outside of Tulsa. All time Favorite Movie? Lonesome Dove Favorite Snack Indulgence: Chips and Salsa All Time Favorite Quote: tough one, but I love this- “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words.”  – St. Francis of Assisi Ever been skydiving? No. Do you want to? No. Dream Vacation: either golfing in Scotland and Ireland, or duck/dove/goose hunting in Argentina. If I could pick a different first name, what would it be? Lom. That way I would be Lom Lomenick. What do I like best about leading Catalyst? The free t-shirts and swag. Seriously, it’s the thousands of leaders around the US and the world that we have the amazing opportunity to impact, equip and inspire to be a Catalyst in their communities. That is an amazing honor. And we take it very seriously, and hold it with a great sense of stewardship. What three people would you want to have dinner with tonight? Billy Graham, Bono, and Nelson Mandela. Bonus Question: What 3 golfers make up your foursome on your trip to Scotland (dreaming here): Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan and Bono. And I would invite Charles Barkley just for the humor!

We'll be featuring a special episode on the podcast in the next few weeks where Pastor Josh will be answering your questions! You can ask your question by calling or texting (646) 801-6033. Be sure to listen for this special Q&A episode where your question might be answered! Today's show guest is Brad Lomenick, who was one of our keynote speakers at Activate in September. Brad is a speaker and leadership consultant, as well as an author. He has written two books: The Catalyst Leader and H3 Leadership. His extensive experience in leading and equipping leaders vastly comes from 12 years he spent as the president of Catalyst, one of America's largest movements of young Christian leaders. He has since moved into a strategic advisor role with Catalyst, along with several other organizations. Brad also keeps a blog where he writes about leadership, the next generation, creativity, teamwork, generational issues, and many more topics. How do you know when you are ready to move on from your position of leadership? Brad shares his insight on what it was like to step down from his presidency of Catalyst. Wherever you find yourself, it's part of your job to transition. Don't get caught up into thinking that the longer you stay somewhere, the more effective you'll be. Some questions you can ask yourself to know whether you are ready to move on in your role of leadership are: Does your leadership become stale? Are your accomplishments more important than your mission? Is your identity wrapped up in what you do? 2. Don't expect to have it all together at 25. Brad shared that he often comes across young leaders who act like they know exactly what they are doing, but this becomes their downfall. Make sure you're not trying to act like you have gotten to a level that you're not even close yet. Be coachable and teachable. There is always more to learn, so don't fall into the temptation of showing off how much you know or what you have accomplished. 3. When you're building something of significance, you have to keep your inner life as the main focus. One of the most difficult parts of ministry is that your own personal spiritual life can fall by the wayside while you are building up others spiritually. This is a struggle for so many leaders, and Brad admitted that this was a struggle for him as well. The first step in refocusing on your own spiritual well-being is to become aware that this is a struggle. Second, Brad shares, you must also create systems that protect you from yourself. You will naturally kill yourself by pursuing this “Kingdom Goal” of trying to grow others while neglecting your own growth. Quotes from this Episode: “Succession and transition is one of the most important essentials for a leader at any level.” - Brad Lomenick “Part of our responsibility as leaders is to pass on and move out of the way.” - Brad Lomenick “When we're in ministry, we start to find our identity in the work we're doing rather than the work God's doing in us.” - Josh Gagnon “What you do is determined by who you are, but who you are is not determined by what you do.” - Brad Lomenick “One of the great temptations of leadership is that significance is built on size.” - Brad Lomenick “If you're a young leader, the best way for you to get to the next level is be great at what you're doing right now.” - Brad Lomenick
