Leaders of STEM in Industry, Education and the Community are to be recognised by the STEM South West Awards 2024. The Awards were launched by European Commissioner nominee Michael McGrath TD, Bob Savage, CIO (EMEA) & Cork Site Lead, Dell Technologies, and Mary Good, Chair STEM South West & Managing Director of Advanced Medical Services, at Cork County Hall. Companies leading the 75,000+ people working in the South West's thriving STEM sectors are invited to showcase their various programmes and initiatives in place to actively support the future talent pipeline and STEM growth strategy in the region. The inaugural Awards will recognise companies and education providers who are leading the charge for the region's STEM community and safeguarding the economic and employment future for the STEM industry in the South West. STEM South West, representing over 50 companies working within the STEM sector in the South West region, who collectively employ thousands of people, say online entries will remain open until September 20th. Winners will be decided by an independent judging panel, led by Bob Savage, and will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on November 21st. There are 3 main categories: STEM in Industry: Company of the Year Small / Startup (up to 50 Employees) Small to Medium (50 - 249 Employees) Large Categories (250+ Employees)) STEM in Education: Educational Initiative of the Year (Primary, Secondary, and Third Level) STEM in the Community: Transition Year (TY) Challenge of the Year Launching the Awards, Minister McGrath, "STEM plays such an important role in the economy of our region, which is home to a wide range of industries, from pharma and life sciences to engineering and technology. STEM South West brings together a wide variety of stakeholders including universities, local government, both SME and multinational employers, and state agencies to facilitate skills training. There are now more than 250k people enrolled in publicly funded higher education colleges in Ireland. These prestigious awards provide us with an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the growth of STEM in the region." Speaking at the launch Mary Good, Chairperson of STEM South West, "We are calling on companies, schools and educational institutes that are directly engaged in supporting the development of STEM subject study and career development to enter. The Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) forecasts that 21,000 additional jobs will be created by 2027. To support Ireland's important and fast-growing Biopharma sector as just one example of a sector set to grow in future years, nurturing and developing a robust talent STEM pipeline is fundamental to future economic performance." STEM South West aims to provide a competitive, innovative, and resilient enterprise base that will facilitate STEM skills training, cross-regional collaboration between industry, government, and academia, and increase employment and economic opportunities throughout the STEM sector in the South West region.? With Cork set to become the fastest-growing region under the Project 2040 plan, STEM South West say the region (Cork and Kerry) is a place where opportunity meets talent, particularly in STEM. Bob Savage, Chair of the Judging Panel for the STEM South West Awards noted, "Cork & the greater South West region now employs over 75,000 people in STEM businesses. It is an integral part of our local economy and has consistently grown over the past 40 years to become the region's largest employer. We must continue to develop and recognise initiatives that support the growth of this crucial industry sector for the future." The Awards The "STEM Company of the Year" award celebrates organisations leading the way in creating a proactive, inclusive and supportive environment for STEM, both within their own company and through outreach initiatives. New voices are always welcome to join us. Lori La Bey, the founder of Alzheimer's Speaks facilitates Dementia Chats.  She learned how essential it was to listen to those diagnosed. Her own mother lived 30 years with dementia. Lori found people living with dementia had great insights and creative ideas for care.  They show us how to be inclusive in new ways. Corn has never been given a fair shake. The evils of high fructose corn syrup have been bellowed from every soapbox, the most commonly grown corn is for animal feed, and is generally, not a much-beloved ingredient. This has also been the case in beer. Even as recent as 2019, Bud Light ran an ad during the Super Bowl calling out Coors Light and Miller Lite for using corn syrup in their beer. But the trend of lighter, more session-able beers is on the rise, including corn lagers. Some of the best breweries in the country are using heirloom varietals of corn in their beers- Fonta Flora, Bow & Arrow, and Black Narrows, to name a few. Josh Chapman, founder of Black Narrows Brewing Company in Chincoteague, VA joins the show to talk all things corn lager. We dive into the specific corn they use for their flagship "How Bout It" corn lager (Bloody Butcher heirloom corn from Bill & Bob Savage). Josh takes us through special brewing considerations needed for brewing with corn and how to keep the integrity of the corn flavor. The surface has only been scratched with corn lagers here on Beer Me! So we will undoubtedly return to this subject again.MUSIC CREDIT: The following music was used for this media project:Music: Funky Intro 31 by TaigaSoundProdFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9552-funky-intro-31License (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

The Enable Ireland team in Cork today revealed the positive impact a generous donation of equipment and expertise from Dell Technologies in Cork has had at their Children’s Services Centre in Curraheen. Enable Ireland has provided disability services in Cork for over 50 years. From their new Lavanagh Centre in Curraheen, they provide a wide range of therapy and support services for over 860 children and their families living in Cork city and county. During recent months, Enable Ireland were forced to find new ways of supporting and engaging with children and families using their services both virtually and face to face for therapy clinics and interventions. With social distancing rules in place, they needed to come up with solutions to enable them to better support children and families using their services and reimagine the layout of their centre, splitting their services across fifteen rooms in their building. With fundraising resources severely impacted, the team reached out to Dell Technologies for support. The team at Dell donated vital IT equipment including laptops, desktop devices, monitors and projectors to enable their Children’s Services teams to work more effectively throughout the building. Niall Horgan, Director of Services Cork, Kerry and Kilkenny, Enable Ireland said: “We at Enable Ireland in Cork are extremely thankful for the support that Dell Technologies has provided. As close neighbours in Cork, we have enjoyed a great relationship over the years. Covid-19 has had an impact on the way we use our new building at the new Lavanagh Children’s Services Centre here in Curraheen. Dell’s generous donation has meant that we can provide virtual services when needed and it allows us a greater flexibility in the way we use different treatment rooms.” Bob Savage, Vice-President, EMEA Centres of Excellence and Cork Site Leader, Dell Technologies said: “Technology has played a significant role in helping us all stay connected in recent months and we were delighted to be able to support Enable Ireland to do exactly that. By reimagining the way they provided services and support technology is now helping them to get the most out of their centre. I’d like to congratulate the team at Dell Technologies in Cork for responding so quickly and I wish Enable Ireland the best of luck into the future.”

Martin Brennan is the Managing Director of Proactive Management, which specialises in Management Training, Team Training, Coaching, Train the Trainer, Course Design and Accreditation. He has delivered training at Board, Senior Management, Middle Management and Operator Levels. He’s also a qualified Occupational Psychologist.I was introduced to Martin earlier this year (thanks Maria) as someone that would be a great guest on the podcast as so much of his work around coaching, values, self-improvement, setting and achieving goals align directly with what the theme of the show is. And I can 100% say he didn’t disappoint.During the conversation, Martin bring us on a journey through his 30+ year career and shares insights, stories and very valuable lessons he’s taken onboard to help him grow and develop and is now sharing these for your benefit. The one main aim I have for each episode of this show is to provide some value to you.
