Welcome Back to the Hunt as we reach the finale of Season 1! The Winchester Men versus the Yellow-eyed Demon. This is what we've been building up to. Chris and Dan breakdown the fight - and not to be understated - the exciting introduction of arguably one of the most important characters in the show's history (Bobby Singer as played by Jim Beaver). We break down the lessons the boys have learned in the past two episodes and how this one sets up more than just a S2 premiere. And we'll be back for a Season 1 recap, before kicking off SEASON 2 of the podcast in January. After all, we've STILL got work to do. [Note from Chris - my apologies for dropping this late. In this Season 1 Finale episode, Abigail & Hana talk about Devil's Trap through the theme of Free Will, focusing on the big choice Sam makes between John and Dean and the moral quandry of what to do with a nearly-dead girl who has a demon keeping her alive but stripping her of free will. They also talk about the introduction of Bobby Singer, hunter extraordinaire and what his knowledge of the supernatural means for the Winchesters, the sexualization of Meg's character, the shift in Dean's relationship with John, and the still-unsolved mystery of the yellow-eyed demon. Next week we will be doing our final Season 1 episode, including an awards show for Season 1 characters, a thematic season recap, and what we're anticipating for Season 2! -------------------------------------------- Driver Picks the Podcast is created, produced & edited by Abigail Badke. And The Winner Is... (S1 Recap) There were no dogs at Point Au Roche today. Brigid intimidated a new DnD friend (making strides in their therapy homework). Someone films their shrimps raving to Sandstorm - remember that from high school dances? Humans have stripes, we just can't see them. Margaret is Dean (No! That's the thing I'm sensitive about!). Dean's boots are sold out. Brigid's afraid that a hand will reach up the sink and grab you. There is no recognition behind Margaret's eyes. We meet Bobby Singer, not Bobby Flay. And dark horse Bugs comes up from the rear. It's time to battle for the best episode of season 1 here on this episode of 3 Idjits In A Pod! It's a honeymoon! It's a bonus episode! It's a...DADDISODE! That's right: The BeWBs take on the father figures of Supernatural in this short(ish) and light-hearted look at the men who raised Dean and Sam Winchester. Carla and Meg must choose between young John Winchester (Matt Cohen), older John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver). If a regular episode of Bed, Wed, or Behead is bite-sized, then this is a happy little morsel for ants.
Today I'm joined by Jim Beaver, best known for his role as Bobby Singer in Supernatural. The fifteenth and final season of Supernatural is soon to be released, but finishing filming hasn't been easy with the virus. Coronavirus briefly put all filming of the Supernatural on hold. But now the show is flying all its actors out to Canada so they can get those last few episodes filmed. So Jim is getting ready to go to Canada where he'll have to self isolate for 2 weeks before filming can begin. Jim has acted in more shows and films than I could possibly list – Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Justified, Big Love, Sliver, Bad Girls, Magnolia, Adaptation, and the list goes on and on… He tells me what it's like to be a successful actor and how he managed to do so well in his career. A Texan after my own heart it's great having Jim on the show, and even better to hear how the entertainment industry is starting to wake up again… “The real secret to being a successful actor doesn't have much to do with acting. It's never holding up production and never making anybody sorry you got hired.” – Jim Beaver Time Stamps: 01:15 – Introducing my guest Jim Braver and the different films and shows he's starred in. 04:30 – The love Jim has for Texas and Austin. 13:26 – The disruption COVID has caused to the filming of Supernatural, the longest-running sci-fi show in history. 19:38 – Jim's love of writing and how it kick-started his acting career. 25:01 – How Jim ended up choosing the name for his character in Deadwood, and whether he watched the show himself. 31:35 – The real secret to being a successful actor. 34:41 – The extent that Jim writes his own lines. 39:27 – The importance of keeping things simple. 41:28 – The time Jim spent in the Marines, what it was like serving in Vietnam and how it's helped his acting career. 50:30 – What it's like writing for television and why Jim prefers to write for himself. 57:40 – What Jim's been doing during lockdown. 1:00:53 – What it will be like working in Canada during the pandemic. 1:09:38 – What it means when Jim says ‘Eejit' in Supernatural, and what it's like having a catchphrase. 1:17:18 – The first major shows Jim played in and how appreciative he is of the experiences he's had. We made it! It's the end of the first season of Supernatural in episode 22, "Devil's Trap." Longtime Winchester ally Bobby Singer is introduced, the demon possessing Meg is exorcised, killing her body in the process, the boys help John escape the demons--or so they *think*--and we end with one of the most brutal cliffhangers in TV history, with the entire Winchester family, including the Impala, fighting for their lives. As usual, Dean gives the Plot Recap and Best Song, Amanda gives the Commentary, and Sammy gives both a Lore Break and Plushies Make Everything Better...BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! We are big fans of Jim's from a lot of the different projects that he has been involved in, but he is also a comic book/pop culture fan himself, which makes this interview all that much better! But, we HAVE to talk about what might be, arguably, his most famous role, as Bobby Singer, in the TV show Supernatural. We do also talk about his time on Deadwood, his time as a playwright, and some of his time as a film historian!! Very fun interview!! Remember, we are ALWAYS looking for feedback from our listeners! There were literal tears when we recorded this one, friends. This week Ally and Steph are talking about the episodes 'How to Win Friends & Influence Monsters' & 'Death's Door' of season seven of Supernatural. In episode 9, Sam, Dean, and Bobby are hunting something new in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and we find out Leviathans are coming to humanity through Turducken sandwiches. At the end of this episode Dick Roman is the worst and shoots Bobby in the head. In 'Death's Door' a reaper is chasing Bobby Singer through his comatose brain. Bobby has a message for Sam and Dean before he goes, so it's up to him and Rufus to hunt through Bobby's worst memories to wake up. The Damn Dirty Geeks continue our roll discussing great entertainment moments with experts in their craft, thanks to popular character actor Jim Beaver. Jim prolific career is filled with memorable characters that made lasting impacts on the films and series in which he appeared. Our visit with Jim Beaver has yielded one of our best, breeziest, most engaging episodes yet. It's likely that most listeners will know Jim Beaver's work from three projects: as the gruff but lovable Ellsworth in HBO's hit western drama DEADWOOD; his one-shot guest appearance turned recurring character Bobby Singer in SUPERNATURAL; and his co-starring role in Guillermo del Toro's gothic romance CRIMSON PEAK. Fans also enjoy Jim's work in the series JUSTIFIED and his role as Lawson in BETTER CALL SAUL, a crossover character Jim first played in BREAKING BAD. A terrific storyteller, Jim regaled the DDG with stories of his experience filming DEADWOOD and the mysteries of character development he explored playing Ellsworth as his character arc expanded most unexpectedly. Jim also shares how John Wayne most strongly influenced his acting style and career, as part of his own character building in a broad range of characters including highly un-Ellsworth role of Carter Cushing in CRIMSON PEAK. This sets up a fascinating discussion of actors deliberate seeking range in their careers across films and television, a mission that Jim Beaver continues to accomplish with every new credit he gains. Enjoy this hour-plus visit with the very funny, friendly and talented Jim Beaver. If you enjoy it as much as we did recording it, please share your comments in a rating and review of our podcast on iTunes.
Note: This episode contains a special forward regarding the shooting at the Pulse club in Orlando Florida on June 12th 2016. If you find discussion of this event particularly triggering, the message ends at time stamp 9:15. You've heard them mention it many a time, now it's time for Jen and Dawn to tell you why they love (and love to hate) the CW series Supernatural. Its brotherly banter, top-shelf spooks and a strong cast of characters often find themselves at odds with rampant fridging and its treatment of women, minorities and LGBT characters, but they love it anyways. Plus, Dawn is right. For once. If you want to help the survivors of the Orlando shooting and make sure something like this never happens again, do something. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. When folks in the United States think of the CW network, they think of shows focusing on teenage drama and low brow humor. But in 2005, an idea was constructed about two young men and their search for their father. The show, Supernatural, was based on the concepts of other genre series of the past including The X Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel. The show focuses on Dean and Sam Winchester, two twenty-something's, who were brought up knowing that monsters are in fact very real. Their father felt it was his mission to hunt these monsters after the murder of his wife by a demon. Dean, the older, jumps aboard and takes up the family business while Sam, the younger, wants a more normal life. But with twists and turns, the two are dragged into a battle not only to protect society from evil but possibly even a war between angels and demons and heaven and hell. Creator Eric Kripke created a show aimed originally at teenage girls only to have it become one of the most successful horror shows in television history. Now running eight seasons, Dean and Sam, who all the girls want to date and all boys want to be, have brought about humor and horror hand in hand with a cast of supporting characters including fan favorites the angel Castial and Sam and Dean's lovable mentor Bobby Singer. Dark Discussions focuses an episode on a show similar to The X Files in style but with monsters traditional and cultural. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Hi ATA Listeners, I have some very sad news to report Sam and Dean Winchester's grumpy mentor and monster researcher extraordinaire Bobby Singer has tragically died at the hands of THAT DAMN GOOD FOR NOTHING LEVIATHAN DICK ROMAN WHO I REALLY WANT TO SEE DEAN BLOW OUT OF HIS MISERY WITH A SHOTGUN BLAST TO THE HEAD! Anyway, in coming down this week's ATA is obviously dedicated to the memory of everyone's favorite drunken Demon Hunter, good ol' Bobby Singer with this episode featuring an extended Supernatural section and the show ending with a song that I think best describes Bobby, The Allman Brothers Band's Ramblin' Man. However, on a more somber note or for you who are in denial that Bobby is gone ATA 61 also has some solid reviews for the Season Finale of ThunderCats, Psych and Bones as well as our favorite comedic moments from Modern Family and what may be the penultimate to final episode of Community.
