When we roll through the experience of noticing our blessings and feeling those feelings of enjoying, cherishing, and holding gratitude for what we have, we are strengthening the electromagnetic pull for additional enjoyment, cherishing and gratitude. We can feel it building upon itself as we consciously hold it, examine it and relish it. The snowball is an old metaphor, but for a reason, so don't skip over it. Live into the snowball with me for a moment. The beauty in our lives, and our sense of it, sticks to itself, packs it on, gathers momentum and becomes larger and larger. Do you feel that? It is a real universal law. And it goes BOTH WAYS. Can you picture a snowball rolling back and forth in something of a concave cradle? Imagine that the cradle is settled into the top of a mountain, and on one side is the pull of your joy, and on the other is the pull of your despair. You are the snowball. You are rolling back and forth in this container, and one thought is ready to tip you over the top and send you careening down one side of the mountain or the other, packing on either the happiness or the despair. The negativity also gets sticky and packs more of itself on. In just the way you can use one piece of Play-Doh® to press and pick up all the other little crumbs of it your kids left on the table, one sticky negative thought puts feelers out for another, until your whole emotional windshield is splattered with squashed bugs and you can't see a blessed thing. (Me and my mixed and also excessive metaphors. Apologies

This week on the podcast, we're exposing ‘the eternal triangle of bi-sexuality' and all the trials and tribulations that come with trying to have it… BOTH WAYS, directed by Jerry Douglas and released in 1975. Future disco queen Andrea True and Douglas regular Gerald Grant star in this sensitive drama (or is it a comedy?) as a married couple whose loving relationship is torn apart by the husband's inability to choose between his wife and the blond bodybuilder he's been seeing on the side. Who will he wind up with, and who will be hurt? Over the course of this episode, we'll discuss Jerry Douglas's earlier successes in the theatre world and the film's many connections to his breakthrough play, TUBSTRIP; bisexuality in adult film; and whether or not the film might've worked better as a play.

Remember when Tramp Stamps made that song saying they'd rather die than sleep with another straight white guy? It's like they thought they were being progressive while singing about sexuality, but it really missed the mark. Throughout music history we've seen artists using music to express their sexuality. But just like misogyny is ingrained in us, so is the male gaze and the fetishization of lesbian and bi women that come along with it. (A la Liam Payne's “Both Ways” or Katy Perry's “I Kissed A Girl.”) This week, we're joined by musician + content creator Joseph Dubay (aka emojoseph on TikTok) to break down the way we think about sexuality in music, and whether or not artists should be open about their sexuality. Surviving the Music Industry

Behind the music, songwriting, and willing to fail with Canadian songwriter Donovan Woods. Born and raised in Canada, Donovan was pretty hip to the folk and bluegrass scene. Sighting Emmylou Harris, Fred Eaglesmith, and even east coast rap as inspirations. He knew songwriting was going to be his thing. So with the advice of his sister to pick up girls, he would need to learn the guitar.  Years of honing the songwriting craft and uploading music to Myspace, Donovan was noticed by an indie movies' producers and actors to use his song for the film. Then sometime in the mix, another song was picked up for a national ad. From there it has taken time and dedication to the craft and his music. Woods is known in his songwriting to talk about the feelings that nobody really wants to talk about or even the feelings we don't even notice.  Since flying to Nashville for songwriting sessions, he soon had Tim McGraw cutting "Portland, Maine", Charles Kelley "Leaving Nashville", Billy Currington "Sweet Love", Charlie Worsham "The Beginning of Things", just to name a few.  Woods is also one to not shy away from hot topics and even stating country music was never a genre to follow the status quo. Donovan is on tour and he has a new record out. Be sure to go to  for tour dates and stream Both Ways on your favorite music platform. Then give him a follow @donovanwoods.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

"If you're not sad you're not paying very much attention." Donovan Woods has a talent for writing songs that feel like “real life”: Funny and sad at the same time, plain spoken and poetic in the same breath, nostalgic and hopeful at once. As he says, "Two opposing ideas can be true at the same time."  So it’s no surprise that he named his latest album Both Ways. He says that when he thinks about it, there’s just “so much sadness”. He says that he loves to watch an audience turn to mush, to make them feel comfortable and then slowly deliver the tragic sense of life. He says he does it by using “tricks of language” that feel familiar and colloquial. He says he developed his confessional style of songwriting, which is generally considered to be country or folk, by listening to hip hop as a kid growing up in Sarnia, Ontario. There’s a lot about Donovan Woods that makes him an outsider to the Nashville singer songwriter circles in which he often travels, but there’s plenty that puts him right at home there. Particularly, a devotion to highly personal, narrative writing. Despite all the tragedy, I think he’s also one of the funniest writers around. Listening to his music, one is constantly toggling between tears of laughter and tears of sadness. At least I am. And talking to Donovan Woods is similar. He’s very a pleasant guy, easy going, down to earth and funny. Sad funny, sure. Bitter funny. Excruciating funny. But funny all the same.  Although his songs are custom made to be performed by him (“people say I sound like I’m singing right in their ear”) they have also been recorded by stars like Tim McGraw and Charles Kelley (of Lady Antebellum). Donovan came to the Third Story headquarters recently during a run of shows and promotion for his new album. Here he talks about writing songs that feel like real life, the big scam of success (“by the time you get the thing you always wanted, you feel like you deserve it”), how to make it in Nashville, and why Wisconsin is the state most like Canada. This episode features an introduction by me in conversation with my wife, Amanda. Thanks for listening. Preservationist and co-founder of the company Vinegar Syndrome Joe Rubin joins us to talk about his restorations of classic sex films. Vinegar Syndrome can be thought of as the “Criterion Collection for porn!” And the quality of their restorations have garnered compliments from their peers who say that their work is better than what has been done on Paramount’s Hitchcock restorations! Joe also has encyclopedic knowledge about of the Golden Age of porn. This is what lead the Quad Cinema in New York City to ask him to program a series of classic sex films for their Erotic City series in the summer of 2017, where films like Bacchanale (1970), Bijou (1972), Both Ways (1975), the documentaries Changes (1970) and Not a Love Story (1981), Double Agent 73 (1974), Naked Came the Stranger (1975), Not Just Another Woman (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976), The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann (1974) and Scoundrels (1982) were screened. This is a wide-ranging interview covering Joe’s fascination with porn at a very early age, how he got into restoration while still in his teens, and why his company’s restorations are better than those VHS copies that you all covet so dearly. Joe fills us in on a lot of behind the scenes stories about a lot of the films screened in the series. And Joe discusses what bothers him most about the way porn studies is practiced by academics. www.vinegarsyndrome.com you can find out more about the series here: https://quadcinema.com/program/erotic-city/ New York Times article about Vinegar Syndrome: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/26/movies/smut-refreshed-for-a-new-generation.html?_r=0 pornocultures.podomatic.com facebook.com/academicsex twitter.com/pornocultures https://concordia.academia.edu/brandrroyo

Listen to FFRF attorney Andrew Seidel teach a lesson to White-House bible-thumpers on Fox & Friends.
