Emotions play a crucial role in our overall mental health, acting as both messengers and influencers of our psychological well-being. Positive emotions like joy, gratitude, and love can enhance mental resilience, foster strong social connections, and improve our ability to cope with stress. But on the flip side, the more challenging emotions such as sadness, anger, jealousy or anxiety, if persistent and unaddressed, can contribute to mental health issues and illness. Understanding and managing our emotions has a positive impact on our wellbeing. By recognizing and processing our emotions, we are better equipped to deal with life's challenges, manage strong feelings, achieve better emotional balance, enhance our mental clarity, and improve our overall quality of life. But how do we learn to manage our emotions more effectively? For many we can feel at the mercy of our feelings, unaware that by drawing from simple techniques from within, we can help mitigate their intensity and reduce overwhelm. This is where Dr Emma Hepburn comes in. An award winning clinical psychologist, lecturer, author and illustrator, Dr Emma has written and illustrated the books ‘A Toolkit For Happiness', ‘A Toolkit For Modern Life' and most recently ‘A Toolkit for Your Emotions - 45 Ways To Feel Better'. Dr Emma Hepburn is also one of the most well-known psychologists on Instagram as @thepsychologymum and has won numerous awards for her contribution to mental health awareness. Dr Emma talks to The Happier Life Project host Gabby about how emotions are made and where they come from. She shares how emotional habits are created and what it means to be on the emotional roller coaster of life, with all of its loop the loops. Dr Emma also explains how our past history and experiences influence our brain and body to create an emotional response; and ways we can objectively step back to review if how we are feeling is more of an echo from the past, rather than an appropriate response to the present. Dr Emma reveals some of her favourite tools to manage more difficult emotions and suggests ways we might break emotional patterns that are not helpful to us. The expert psychologist also explains why we should never feel ashamed of our emotions and how we can positively influence others towards the feel good feelings too. 'A Toolkit for Your Emotions' helps readers to navigate and understand their emotions effectively. Taking a deep dive into how we feel, Dr Emma explains all the tools we need to intercept and redirect challenging emotions by offering practical strategies, exercises, and insights. Each topic is illustrated with Dr Emma's well-loved illustrations to make them accessible, meaningful and memorable. This episode is a special one for us. It brings together voices of people who were in Nashville for the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference as a spiritual sequel to a 2018 episode we called "Strong Feelings." Our goal then and now is simple: To capture the feelings of a particular moment in the beer industry and encourage people to share ideas, inspiration, and what they think matters—or maybe needs to change. To help with creating this episode, I was joined by Kate Bernot at a bottle share party hosted by the National Black Brewers Association. We partnered with two board members from the association to chat with attendees and gather their thoughts and feelings: Jon Renthrope, CEO and brewmaster of New Orleans' Cajun Fire Brewing and Alisa Bowens-Mercado, owner of New Haven, Connecticut's Rhythm Brewing. Over the course of the night, each of us took turns with the microphone, engaging with people and their strong feelings about topics that ranged from how to attract new customers to craft beer, discussing the people who represent the future of craft beer, who they admire, and more. Consider this as a beer version of speed dating. Each person picked a card at random that had a topic to talk about—which you'll hear—and then shared their response. What came of it all offers us a unique moment in time with perspectives that tell the story of craft beer in spring 2023. Along with the responses, you'll also hear the voice of Kate Bernot, who will share excerpts from a Sightlines story about the National Black Brewers Association. Combined, the live voices from the NB2A's party and Kate's reporting will give you a sense of place and importance of the organization and what it can achieve. First, we'll turn it over to some of the people from the bottle share. This is Strong Feelings, made in collaboration with Jon Renthrope, Alisa Bowens-Mercado, and the National Black Brewers Association.

We've spent the past few months deep in a series on pandemic clarity—hearing intimate stories about people whose relationships to work have changed dramatically over the past two years. But the more we listened to others' stories, the more we realized…it was time to tell our own.In today's episode, Sara is joined by Active Voice operations manager and Strong Feelings producer, Emily Duncan, to talk about their own reckonings with work. From the founding of Active Voice during the pandemic to confronting exploitation in the music industry, they offer glimpses into the reality of being leadership works-in-progress.What we do is really tech and UX and UI focused. But I do think that there's a ton of overlap in multiple industries. And I see myself as having the ability to take some of what I've been learning here and bring it back, take that fire from the Greek gods and bring it back down and share it. If I can come and help educate even just one person on their rights and what they deserve, I think that it will have all been worth it.—Emily Duncan, Ops Manager at Active VoiceLinks:Emily Duncan“Work needs to stay in its place”Active Voice

Something tells us you've got strong feelings about community coaches. Your kids have probably had great community coaches, and perhaps they've experienced not-so-great ones, too. You may even be a community coach yourself — and goodness knows, it's a tough gig. This week on SportsParenthood, we speak with Richard McInnes, who is currently CEO of Water Polo Australia, and is a degree-qualified sports scientist and former multiple World Cup winning coach. He talks to us about what Water Polo Australia is doing as an early adopter of the new community coaching reforms, what makes a great coach, and he says something that I want to highlight, underline, and circle as a key message for sports parents and coaches.HOSTS: John and Tiffany BonaseraPRODUCER: Tiffany BonaseraCONTACT US: tiffany@sportsparenthood.com.au
We've all heard about pandemic burnout. But that's not the whole story. This season on Strong Feelings, we're focusing on pandemic clarity: how the past two years have changed people's relationships to work…for good. In February, we gathered detailed survey responses from 236 people working in tech and design. Our central question: How has your relationship to work changed in the past two years? The results of our research were just released in a new report called “Work needs to stay in its place”—available for download now at activevoicehq.com/research. We found that the pandemic didn't just upend people's daily routines. For many, it triggered a dramatic rethinking of their priorities and values at work. So that's what we're talking about this season. To kick things, Sara sits down with researcher Dr. Urszula Pruchniewska, who worked on the report, to discuss some of their findings.I think the pandemic set the stage for us being able to talk about stuff that we might have been feeling for a really long time but we didn't share with each other, or even share with ourselves. The idea of work being your passion and doing what you love is so prevalent throughout society that it's weird to say, "No. Work is just work." Especially in design and tech fields…where we are taught to have so much personal feelings around our work. —Dr. Urszula Pruchniewska, research consultantOver the next two months, we'll be sharing intimate stories with people who've experienced major changes to their mindsets, motivations, and relationships to work. You don't want to miss it. Links:Urszula PruchniewskaWork needs to stay in its placeActive VoiceThis episode features clips from KTVU FOX 2 San Francisco, Fox Business, NPR, and NPR

As Gen Xers, Two Nerds have some pretty Strong Feelings about the Matrix movies, so it was with some trepidation we watched The Matrix Resurrections. A late-period fourth movie appended to a long-completed trilogy almost never goes well (e.g. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). Also ominous: only Lana Wachowski returned to helm the film. Though their careers have been diverging a little in the past decade, the Wachowskis are a filmmaking pair like the Coen Brothers or Merchant-Ivory: it's hard to imagine them apart. We were very pleasantly surprised, which seems a funny thing to say about such a furious film. Lana Wachowski is pissed as hell, and she very clearly shows you why and with whom.
