In this episode of Zero to CEO I speak to Rob Braiman, a veteran who served in the US Special Operations Command and founder and CEO of Cogent Analytics, a consulting firm that helps businesses scale up improving organizational structuring and getting rid of operational efficiencies which are often costing companies millions of dollars a year. Every business owner wants to grow their company. However, learning how to manage growth while increasing productivity can be challenging. In this episode, Rob gives advice to entrepreneurs who want to free up their time, stop working 80 hours a week and still build multi-million dollar brands.
As your business grows, it becomes more and more complex. Rob Braiman has made it his mission to reduce business complexities and help entrepreneurs become the best versions of themselves. In this episode, he shares some examples of how he does this, as well as what it takes to run a thriving business. About Rob Braiman:Rob Braiman is a serial entrepreneur. He is currently the CEO of Cogent Analytics, a business management consulting firm that he founded, which is changing the face of consulting. Honor, courage, wisdom, faith, perseverance, and loyalty are foundational to everything that Rob does in his life and in his business. Episode highlights: Every business is built on 4 foundational pillars: business development and marketing, organizational engineering, operational engineering, and measurement. Neglecting even just one pillar will destabilize the entire business so all of them require equal focus. (11:11) Human behavior is driven more by recognition and having a voice than by financial gain. If you have employees, keep this in mind, because the best-run businesses are those within which everyone has a vested interest. (15:23) The journey of entrepreneurship is full of challenges, and it is those challenges that empower you and help you to grow as an entrepreneur. Don't run from them, embrace them. (18:58) If you are running a business on your own, there will come a point where you will keep doing the same thing and getting the same result. This is the breaking point where you may need an extra set of eyes to point out the faultlines which are preventing you from growing. (19:16) Profit Engineering explained simply: rather than thinking about profit as a residual thing (i.e. revenue less cost = profit) think in terms of “Revenue less profit = what you can spend.” (23:20) As you progress along your entrepreneurial journey, the dynamics become more complex. It requires a lot of heart and soul to push through each threshold; success does not happen overnight. (27:45) Rob's best advice for entrepreneurs: “The best run businesses are the ones where there is a vested interest from the employees, true leadership, true measurement and operational guidance.” (14:24) As a business owner, it is up to you to ensure that your business is being run in the most effective way possible and these are the areas that require your attention. Here’s an interesting question for you. Are you making what you are worth? It could be assumed that most people listening right now would answer “no” to that question. If you own a business, believe it or not you have a lot of control over whether you are getting paid what you are worth. On this weeks episode of The Employer Blueprint Podcast we are excited to present Rob Braiman. Kyle and Rob have an amazing conversation about many things and the most important of their conversation is about “Profit First”. Rob Braiman started his company Cogent Analytics because he wanted to advise and represent small business owners based on his value system and not someone else’s. This view of consulting comes from past experience of working for other consulting firms where it can sometimes be “more about the billed hours than it becomes about actually making a difference”, as said by Rob in the podcast episode. Through Cogent Analytics, Rob is trying to disrupt the industry by having a client first model. As Rob explains, there is a lot of client engagement done after the problem is fixed to make sure there is success long term. “Cogent Analytics is born out of a simple set of values; its honor, courage, wisdom, faith, perseverance, and loyalty. That goes back to my military days. That’s tenets of strength power and character, and I don’t break them for anybody” ` Rob Braiman At the end of the podcast Rob has a special offer for The Employer Blueprint Podcast listeners. Rob Braiman is personally responsible for the development and growth of three directly owned and successful start-ups, he brings a passion for the small to mid-market segment of business. He has spent 15 years working directly with business owners to improve strategic planning, operations, growth, and business development. During today’s conversation, I sit down with Rob Braiman, who’s the Principal and Managing Member at Cogent Analytics. I brought Rob on the call today to talk about the typical problems that small business owners and entrepreneurs face today and how to get through them. This conversation does get somewhat analytical and academia focused, but it will still be incredibly useful for small business owners. You’ll leave this conversation thinking about how you can improve some of your bottom line metrics and numbers that you don’t necessarily think about when bootstrapping. My big takeaway from this episode is that the world of KPI metrics can be quite interesting when you know what you’re tracking and how to pay yourself first. In this broadcast, Rob and I talk about: Where did Rob’s entrepreneurial journey begin What was Rob’s time like with the fifth group How did Rob go from the military to working with analytics What background do small business owners typically come from What are the four pillars that analyzes your current state of business What are the types and sizes of small businesses Rob typically works with How does Rob take a holistic view to his clients Does Rob typically see the same mistakes made by small business owners Why you need to look at your financials Where should you start when looking at KPIs How can you monitor your business development What is a good break even strategy Why most business owners do not come from an academic background In what way does under-performing give away your money Why you need to feel comfortable talking about your profits without concerning yourself with “greed” How is Cogent Analytics an information first business How to Connect with Rob: cogentanalytics.com Take Cogent Analytics Entrepreneur Quiz to learn what opportunities you have for better profits LinkedIn Twitter Get the Latest Broadcasts of In The Trenches on Your Favorite Podcast Platform: Subscribe to In The Trenches on iTunes Listen to In The Trenches on Spotify Get your weekly dose of In The Trenches on Google Play How You Can Support In The Trenches Did you enjoy today's broadcast of In The Trenches? Rob Braiman of Cogent Analytics
Army veteran Rob Braiman is founder and CEO of Cogent Analytics. He has spent fifteen years working with business owners on improving strategic planning, operations, growth, and business development. With a military career that has left a huge impression on his principles, Rob has built a culture of integrity, honesty, and transparency that puts clients first. “I cherish my military time. It was the foundation of principles for who I am, how I raise my children, how I try to lead my people, and more importantly, how I try to represent small business owners, which is really the mission of Cogent Analytics.” - Rob Braiman Rob Braiman - An Invaluable Military Career Rob enlisted in the Army and served in Special Operations. He was with the first battalion for the Special Forces Group stationed at Fort Bragg and then Fort Campbell. It wasn’t until 1990 that he got out. A young man when he retired from the service, Rob has a great deal of respect for the soldiers who have been involved in conflicts in and out and in multiple countries for the past couple of years. Job-Hunting During Transition Having married while still in the military, Rob’s first objective upon getting out was to find a job. It was quite the challenge. The military walk, talk, and communicate at different speeds and manners than civilians do, and the structured world they navigate is so different from that of the civilians. He had a couple of jobs that put food on the table and paid the bills the first few years. And if Rob had anything to be thankful for, it would be the values that being part of the armed forces instilled in him and he carried through his transitional career search. “All of the attributes that made us successful while in service are those same things that employers are looking for today.” - Rob Braiman Trailblazing Business Systems Rob began his career in the business world working with a startup company. He helped his boss build his operations from ground up. With his attitude and abilities, he got offered his first equity. He was working with people who didn’t necessarily have the same values as him. In his early thirties, Rob realized that his skills for putting systems into place were key to opening his own endeavor. And that, he did. Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show. We would love to hear from you! I finally was able to upload another episode of my podcast Monoverse radio. It’s been a long time since I posted a mix, but after a long period of things simply getting in the way (and focusing on my productions), I’m finally getting back in the groove of things and finding the need to get some mixes out there! Along the way I lost my hard drive with the original intro, so you’ll notice temporary FX sounds instead. This time around, since I owe it to anyone who subscribed after the first two episodes, I’ve included some exclusive material Subscribe via iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/monoverse-radio/id564121840 Tracklist: 001: Mat Zo vs. Karen Overton – Your Loving Sky (Monoverse Intro Edit) 002: Ost & Meyer vs. 7 Skies – Dharma (Original Mix) 003: Monoverse & Cintra - Fristii (Original Mix) 004: Den Rize – Better Half Of Me (Original Mix) 005: Willem de Roo – Datamoon (Original Mix) 006: Andy Tau – Passport (Store N Forward Remix) 007: EDU – Gaza (Original Mix) 008: Mike Oceanic & Tom8 – Elle Est Belle (Original Mix) 009: Eco – Desert Song (Original Mix) 010: Braiman & Falcon – Serenity (Original Mix) 011: Armin van Buuren pres.
