Dr. Andrew Wakefield joins the Highway Diary Podcast to talk about his transition from cancelled physician, to film director. How the smears of Brian Deer, and his Project Mockingbird paymasters, have failed to knock him off his life's purpose. How his cancellation from the Tribecca Film Festival was actually a blessing in disguise. How stargazing in West Texas, knocked him out of the grief of his livelihood lost. We also talk about the inevitable demise of mainstream entertainment, and what will replace it. www.Yow.TV www.EricHollerbach.com
Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s confirmation as US health secretary made official one of President Donald Trump’s most controversial appointments. Kennedy’s confirmation came off the back of fiery questions from both Democrats and Republicans on his record on vaccines. Under oath, Kennedy denied he was against vaccinations, but watching closely was investigative journalist Brian Deer, who says Kennedy is beyond a vaccine sceptic – he’s “the most prominent anti-vaccine campaigner in the whole world”. Today, journalist Brian Deer on Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s real beliefs, and the impact his campaigning had on a deadly measles outbreak in the Pacific. Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page Running Sheet: This Medical Life And The Andrew Wakefield Fraud 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week There is no featured drink this week. 00:08:10 Dr Travis Brown and This Medical Life Dr Travis Brown is a pathologist who has a passion for the stories of medicine. He's also Resident General Pathologist at Clinpath Pathology. His obsession for storytelling led him to create a podcast in 2020, called This Pathological Life. In late 2021, the podcast broadened its focus and became This Medical Life. Travis is 83 episodes into this journey and in every one of them he takes a particular disease or medical condition, explores the history behind it, and then covers our understanding and treatment of it today. Typically, he has an expert from the field handle the last part of each podcast. The enterprise is an open gift to the medical world. It is pitched at GPs and specialists and medical students, but he's also attracting a general interest audience of humans who are curious to learn as well as patients who want to know more about their particular illness. Our very own Steve Davis is the co-host of this podcast and because he is having his Covid booster and flu shot today, coinciding with an episode about vaccines and one about influenze just about to be released, it seemed the perfect time to throw the spotlight on this fellow Adelaidean podcast. We will hear the complete episode (Season 4, Episode 38), in which the special guest is Brian Deer, the award winning investigative journalist and bestselling author of The Doctor that Fooled the World, which blew the whistle on the great fraud carried out by disgraced former doctor, Andrew Wakefield, who wrongly linked the MMR vaccine to autism and fuelled parts of the ant-vax movement. As you will hear, this is not based on semantics, this truly was a fraud at many levels. It's a horrifying insight into how such evil can then lure well-meaning people not only off the safe path but into the thickets and weeds of conspiracy and pseudo science. 01:01:54 Musical Pilgrimage Our featured song this episode is Four O'Clock Friday by The Public Servants. This Adelaide band claims to be the world's premier public servant-themed novelty punk rock band. And I think they're on the money. On Friday, June 16, 2023, The Public Servants will officially launch their debut full-length album ‘Code of Misconduct' at the Hotel Metropolitan, with support from Adelaide's Celtic folk rockers The Backyarders. You would expect public servants to have obsessive personalities and the band members do not disappoint. They are all vinyl buffs so their debut album has been pressed into luxury 180 gram brown vinyl. And it will be a limited edition, too, with only 100 copies made. Code of Misconduct on vinyl is available at The Public Servants' shows and online at Bandcamp, with the music available through all the digital platforms. A final thought. Public servants also like statistics so it is no surprise that their media release contained this gem: 100,000 songs are released each day. They posit that as the reason they're striving a bit weird, because there's a lot of "noise" to cut through. To give you a taste of the content, ,the album opens with Blend 43 – a coffee staple in many a workplace. It's followed by Papercut, Stress Leave, and Bored. The song we're playing, to keep the episode family friendly is not, Flexitime Sexytime, but rather, Four O'Clock Friday. It's got to be four o'clock Friday somewhere, right? In 1998, a 6 page report published in the Lancet that would later be described as one of history's great science frauds. The article was titled “Ileal-lymphoid-nodular hyperplasia, non-specific colitis, and pervasive development disorder in children” but the news headlines ran with a much shorter version: the MMR vaccine causes autism. The article was written by Andrew Wakefield, a British gastroenterologist turned researcher, who had taken it upon himself to deceive the medical community and general population at large. Fortunately, investigative journalist Brian Deer uncovered the truth behind this ‘study' through hard work, significant obstacles and persistence. Although Wakefield's claims have been thoroughly discredited, we still feel the impact of this fraud to this day and he has become an icon of the anti-vax movement. Our special guest is Brian Deer who is an award winning investigative journalist and bestselling author for The Doctor that Fooled the World, published in 2020. This is the story of the MMR vaccine fraud.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Well for episode 15 we thought it might be worth discussing the great Wakefield fraud, the MMR scandal, the lies and damage that were spread by that disgraced former doctor. Join Simon, Kuro and Marinne for what turned out to be the hardest episode we have ever recorded. It took two days and four attempts to get everything recorded. It took 4 days to edit and cut down. This is not an easy subject, we tried to keep lighthearted in it and we did cut out a lot of the darker aspects of the study that underlies the MMR fears. We added a trigger warning at 14:10 as we briefly discuss the experiments on the children. We sanitised it as much as possible but if you would like to skip that part, jump to 135 where you will hear a few seconds of music before we move on to less difficult aspects of the episode. We make reference to a number of sources throughout the episode. I would like to point you towards the excellent Abigail Thorn in a Philosophy Tube video “Vaccines & Freedom” where she discusses research and interviews people who have declined the Covid-19 vaccine and reviews the philosophy behind vaccine hesitancy. My main source for everything was Brian Deer and his book, which I would highly recommend for anyone who wants to know the depths to which Wakefield sunk and the pain that was caused. I quoted from a BMJ article when I called Wakefield a fraud, and that Journal has a number of interesting articles available freely online. It is well established that Wakefield and Barr were working together prior to the study, again see both Deer and the BMJ for more details. And as for his money making schemes, those make up a great deal of interesting articles. Not to mention is measles jab patent some two years beforehand. And lastly, vaccines DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM. In this interview with Andy Wakefield, Cilla asks Andy to discuss his article The Sixth Extinction: https://www.jpands.org/vol24no3/wakefield.pdf. Key points addressed, include: The success of herd immunity in the measles virus, which proves interventions unnecessaryKnown and unknown benefits and protections provided by viruses and microbes Prior exposure to viruses provide protection to later strains, while inoculation leads to greater risks and susceptibilityInoculation-resistant strains in highly injected populations The role of inoculations in promoting resistant strains of the current virusAndy and Cilla go on to discuss the value of homeoprophylaxis (HP). Despite the success of HP, it has been devalued and suppressed because it lacks a commercial value to pharmaceutical companies. Finally, Cilla and Andy reflect upon the good news in regards to the current virus in that it has drawn more attention to the problems of the pharmaceutical industry. Andy concludes by sharing a bit about his newest film project. DIRECTOR Andrew Wakefield MB.BS., is an academic gastroenterologist. He received his medical degree in 1981. Wakefield has published over 140 original scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters. In 1995, he started investigating a possible role between gastrointestinal issues, the MMR vaccine, and neurological injury in children. In pursuit of this possible link, Dr. Wakefield participated in a study of twelve children with both stomach and developmental issues. The ensuing report, written with twelve other authors, would catapult Wakefield into becoming one of the most controversial figures in the history of Medicine. In 2004, freelance journalist, Brian Deer, published an investigation into Wakefield et al. claiming that Wakefield et al. falsified data and committed fraud. Deer attacked Dr. Wakefield's ethics, as having unreported conflicts of financial interests, and of falsifying research data in a report co-authored by 12 others. Deer's allegations led the General Medical Council to revoke Dr. Wakefield's license to practice medicine. More recently, on appeal, the English High Court overturned the allegations made against the senior authors of the Lancet paper and Wakefield's colleague Professor John Walker-Smith was reinstated and exonerated.Wakefield continues to fight back on behalf of affected children, winning numerous awards for his writing and films which can be found at 1986theact.com. His latest film on the infertility epidemic is available for free at infertilitythemovie.com. Peter Hotez is an internationally recognized physician-scientist in neglected tropical diseases and vaccine development. In this episode, they first follow up on the podcast episode (#158) with Brian Deer (the investigative journalist who exposed the complex and disturbing story behind the infamous 1998 Lancet paper by Andrew Wakefield linking the MMR vaccine and autism) with a broader discussion about the origin and evolution of the anti-vaccine movement. They explore some of the specific claims being made around vaccine additives, the timing of when vaccines are given, and claims about issues with the HPV vaccine specifically. Next, Dr. Hotez shares his own journey as a parent of an autistic child and speaks of the challenges of diagnosing autism, what could account for the seeming increase in the prevalence, and whether there is any support for the notion that environmental triggers play a role. They close out with a discussion on the state of affairs with respect to COVID-19 vaccination, comparing the various vaccines as well as the challenges that emerging variants of the virus may present. This episode was originally recorded on April 2, 2021. We discuss: The stubborn persistence of anti-vaccine sentiment (3:00); A closer look at claims about thimerosal and vaccine spacing causing autism (12:00); The Hib vaccine: An example of the profound difference a vaccine can make (23:30); The controversy surrounding the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (30:45); The growing anti-science sentiment, COVID vaccine hesitance, and the basis of the anti-vaxx movement (39:00); The origins of autism, and Hotez’s personal story as a parent of an autistic child (1:02:45); The challenge of diagnosing autism, increasing prevalence, and a potential parallel to Alzheimer’s disease (1:14:15); Comparing the various COVID-19 vaccines and the impact of emerging variants of the virus (1:30:00); Global vaccination challenges and “vaccine diplomacy” (1:40:45); and More. Brian Deer is an award-winning investigative journalist best known for his coverage of the pharmaceutical industry. In this episode, he and Peter discuss the content of his book, The Doctor Who Fooled the World: Science, Deception, and the War on Vaccines, which exposes the complex and disturbing story behind the infamous 1998 Lancet paper by Andrew Wakefield linking the MMR vaccine and autism. Brian explains how doctors led by Wakefield, a lawyer, and an anti-vaccination parents’ group worked together on a study to validate their preconceived belief that the MMR vaccine caused autism. He reveals what happened behind the scenes as the study was carried out, explains problems in the lab, and discusses inconsistencies in the analysis. In the end, this is a story that serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of science driven by an agenda rather than by a spirit of open inquiry. We discuss: How Andrew Wakefield’s flawed approach to scientific research led to the belief that vaccines cause autism (3:25); The importance of following the scientific method, and how Wakefield twisted the science to link measles virus to Crohn’s disease (14:15); The backstory behind Andrew Wakefield’s infamous 1998 Lancet paper linking the MMR vaccine and autism (26:45); The many flaws and disturbing aspects of Wakefield’s study: suffering children and failure to do strain-specific sequencing (45:15); The epicenter of fraud: Bogus PCR testing furthering the belief that measles virus from the MMR vaccine caused autism (1:00:00); Additional issues that contaminated the study results (1:22:15); Discovering the misrepresented medical records for the kids involved in the study leading to the retraction of the Lancet paper and Wakefield losing his license (1:31:00); The resurgence of the anti-vaccination movement, Brian’s motivation to write the book, and parting thoughts (1:36:45); and More. In this episode of Talk Nerdy, Cara is joined by award-winning investigative journalist Brian Deer to talk about his new book, "The Doctor Who Fooled the World: Science, Deception, and the War on Vaccines." They discuss the incredible story of how Andrew Wakefield's fraudulent research sparked an anti-vax movement that swept the globe.
Dr. Andrew Wakefield - Part One Some of the best words to describe Andrew Wakefield can be liar, grifter, sociopath, arrogant and dangerous. His goal in life was fame, fortune and a Nobel Prize. BRIAN DEER – THE DOCTOR WHO FOOLED THE WORLD...with TRE's Bill Padley
Today we will be talking to Brian Deer, journalist, writer, and author of the new book, "The Doctor who fooled the world" about the infamous Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Dr. Wakefield has made quite the name for himself, as he is the source for the infamous claim that vaccines are somehow related to autism. Of course, there is no evidence that this is true, and a plethora of evidence to the contrary, yet Dr. Wakefield maintains his untenable position? Why? Well, Brian is here to shed some light on that for us. You can find the podcast at our website, straighttothepointshow.com (or sttpshow.com) The "Straight To the Point" podcast is also available on YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, and other podcatchers.

In this very candid conversation, Brian Deer and I discuss his latest book, The Doctor Who Fooled the World - Science, Deception, and the War on Vaccines. The subject of the book and this podcast is the now disgraced former doctor, Andrew Wakefield.Wakefield created a crisis against vaccines, then spread the fear through any means possible and then raked in the rewards of his chaos. At one point, you'll hear Brian describe the entire ordeal as a 'scam within a scam'.Brian Deer is a veteran British investigative journalist, best known for his inquiries into the drug industry, medicine, and social issues for the Sunday Times of London. Among his awards, Deer was twice named the UK's specialist reporter of the year, and in 2016 he was made Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) by York St. John University. To learn more about Brian, visit:➡️ Website: https://briandeer.com/➡️ Buy the Book: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-doctor-who-fooled-the-world-brian-deer/1132783789My podcast is an iHeartMedia sanctioned podcast, is available at your fingertips anywhere in the world wherever you listen to your podcasts and is a joy to create for you.For even quicker access to all of my podcast episodes, you can click on the link on my Instagram bio. Tilly Lloyd from Unity Books reviews The Doctor Who Fooled the World by Brian Deer, published by Scribe.
Director Miranda Bailey joins us to talk about her riveting portrait of a man driven to prove his detractors wrong. Director’s statement: “I gravitate towards provocative and discussion-making material for most of my films. When I began this journey in 2010, Andrew Wakefield was much less known in the United States than he is now. But those who did know him seemed to have very strong feelings either for or against him. I was curious as to who he was and how he could stand up to such rejection from his peers and such scrutiny in the media regarding his part in the MMR Scandal. As the style of my film evolved, I decided it was not my place to defend Andrew Wakefield, nor was it to condemn him. My interest lies in observance. I asked questions and observed. It is up to the audience to decide what they see. ” For news and updates got to: The Pathological Optimistfilm.com facebook.com/ThePathologicalOptimist
What is critical thinking? *NB: There's a few cuss words in this episode. We made a movie! You should really watch this. Because we made it.
http://vaxxedthemovie.com/ ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Andrew Wakefield, MB.BS., is an academic gastroenterologist who practiced medicine at the Royal Free in the U.K. publishing over 140 scientific papers. In 1995, he was contacted by parents of autistic children with stomach issues; he learned that these conditions often occurred immediately following an MMR vaccine. In pursuit of this possible link, Dr. Wakefield led an initial study of twelve children with both stomach and developmental issues. Since moving to Austin, Texas, he co-founded the Autism Media Channel with Polly Tommey with the goal of countering the pharmaceutical marketing and advertising juggernaut and the biased corporate-owned media with their own media. Together they produced the award-winning documentary, "Who Killed Alex Spourdalkis?," which was Wakefield's directorial debut. VaxXed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe is his second film. However, with the paper's publication, the Dean of the medical school held a press briefing with some of the co-authors in attendance. Wakefield was called upon to answer a question as to what parents should do in light of concerns about MMR vaccine safety. He responded that in his mind there was enough doubt about MMR vaccine safety that parents should opt for the single measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines given at yearly intervals. His response: "It's a moral issue for me. I can't support the continued use of these three vaccines, given in combination, until this issue has been resolved." Wakefield advocated for the use of single vaccines. He did not say to stop vaccinations altogether as many have been led to believe. The report, published in The Lancet Journal, would catapult Wakefield into becoming one of the most controversial figures in the history of medicine. Nonetheless, this minted Wakefield as the "Father of the Anti-Vaccine Movement." These statements were echoed around the U.K. and the U.S., and parents chose the single vaccines in preference to MMR. The official response was to withdraw the option of single vaccines making the return of measles inevitable. Growing anti-MMR sentiment and lower vaccination rates threatened the bottom lines of manufacturers GlaxoSmithKline and Merck. In the U.S. Merck holds the sole patent for the MMR vaccine. In 2004, the same year the CDC published its MMR/Autism study, freelance journalist, Brian Deer, published an investigation into Wakefield et al. findings in the Lancet Journal claiming that Wakefield et al. had falsified data and committed fraud. More recently, on appeal, the English High Court overturned the allegations made against the senior authors of the Lancet paper and Wakefield's colleague Professor John Walker-Smith was reinstated and exonerated. Wakefield is the only one of the 13 co-authors of the Lancet Journal findings barred from practicing medicine. He lost his country, his career, and his medical license. This report would catapult Wakefield into becoming one of the most controversial figures in the history of medicine. He considers these losses a small price to pay for the privilege of working with affected families.

In this podcast, Deer describes how he uncovered the truth and the legal consequences that followed. The conversation closes with a discussion of the elusiveness of truth in science and medicine.

You know how it took Pink Floyd six years and seven albums before they came up with "Dark Side of the Moon?" You know how the early stuff is still really good -- and eventually attained a fanatical cult following -- yet when you listen to it you think, "I see where they're coming from, but they're not quite there yet. This is still really hit-and-miss experimentation?"That's what this show #001 is to me.No, I'm not talking about Brian Deer, a wonderful local musician and all-around great guy who gives us four excellent tracks and a nice insightful interview (and whose "Black Cloud Talk" CD has been spinning relentlessly in my car -- and my head -- all week). No, THAT guy is phenominal, as this episode -- and time itself -- will prove.I, however, am more concerned with the little technical things like the fact that when I compress the raw file down to MP3 I suddenly sound like I have a lisp (even at 128kbps); or how I can't completely rid myself of that mic buzz, no matter how many filters and effects I run on the file; or that the volume levels are really off, but playing with them just makes the buzz more noticable; or that annoying seven minutes of silence at the end of the file that (at the time of this upload) I can't seem to remove without corruping the whole thing.Okay, I know since it's my first podcast, I'm allowed, and on the whole I'm reasonably proud of the effort, but those technical issues will no doubt haunt me for years to come ... or at least until I go all Lucassy on you people and release "Episode 1: The Special Edition," and replace Brian with a kid-friendly CGI character that gives us obligatory comic relief. You know, to save him from being bogged down by me and all.So let that be a warning to buy "Black Cloud Talk" and catch as many Brian Deer show as possible now, while you still can. And be sure to tell him you heard about him on the Indy In-Tune podcast. Maybe one day he'll forgive me for the hum and volume problems.
