A new research paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 14 on January 12, 2023, entitled, “The chromatographic constitution of andiroba oil and its healing effects, compared to the LLLT outcomes, in oral mucositis induced in golden Syrian hamsters: a new treatment option.” The oral mucositis is a mucosal alteration that usually arises from oncological treatments, such as chemotherapy, and it is characterized as an inflammatory process. In this new study, researchers Jessica T. Gomes, Ana Márcia V. Wanzeler, Sergio M.A. Júnior, Rosa Helena F. Chaves Soares, Carolina P. de Oliveira, Emanuelle de M. Rodrigues, Bruno M. Soares, Diego D.F.A. Alcantara, Rommel M.R. Burbano, and Fabrício M. Tuji from Federal University of Pará and the University Center of Pará aimed to demonstrate the chromatographic constitution of Andiroba oil, while comparing and evaluating Andiroba oil and laser scarring efficiency in treatments of oral mucositis in hamsters. “The low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is the best standard treatment and the most efficient method in treating OM. Similarly, the andiroba oil presents great potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the healing and toxicological effects of andiroba oil, compared to the LLLT outcomes, observing if andiroba presents a similar/higher potential than the LLLT.” The animals were submitted to 5-Fluorouracil. Included in the study were total of 122 animals that were randomized and divided into the following groups: (a) positive control; (b) laser associated to andiroba oil; (c) laser; (d) andiroba oil; (e) negative control; (f) cyclophosphamide (genotoxicity control). The induction of oral mucositis occurred by the administration of intraperitoneal Fluorouracila (60 mg/kg) and trauma to the mucosa. The laser protocol was performed once a day and the andiroba oil applied 3 times a day (1,5 ml/day). The mucosae were photographed and removed for clinical and histopathological analysis on day 4, 8, 12, and 15. The analysis was based in OM severity, in specific scoring for the clinical and histopathological aspect. Toxicity was evaluated on day 15 using comet assay and it was performed by variant DNA damage parameters. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) Tukey post-test and Kruskal–Wallis Dunn post-test. The “andiroba oil” and “laser” groups presented better results when compared to the control groups and the treatment associations. The andiroba oil presented the best scarring results, even considering its efficiency proximity to the laser treatment. “Andiroba and laser, separately, did not present genotoxicity, however their association evidences damage to DNA.” DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28338 Correspondence to: Diego D.F.A. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hechosecuador/message
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hechosecuador/message

Abstract: The clinical spectrum associated with SCN2A de novo mutations (DNMs) continues to expand and includes autism spectrum disorder with or without seizures, in addition to early and late seizure onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs). Recent biophysical studies on SCN2A variants suggest that the majority of early seizure onset DEE DNMs cause gain of function. Gain of function in SCN2A, the principal sodium channel of excitatory pyramidal neurons, would result in heightened neuronal activity and is likely to underlie the pathology seen in early seizure onset DEE patients. Supratherapeutic dosing of the non-selective sodium channel blocker phenytoin, is effective in controlling seizures in these patients but does not impact neurodevelopment, raising the idea that more profound and specific reduction in SCN2A function could significantly improve clinical outcome. To test the potential therapeutic benefit of reducing SCN2A in early seizure onset DEE we centrally administered an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) targeting mouse Scn2a (Scn2a ASO) to a mouse model of human SCN2A early seizure onset DEE. Mice were genetically engineered to harbour the human equivalent SCN2A p.R1882Q mutation (Q/+), one of the most recurrent mutations in early seizure onset DEE. Q/+ mice presented with spontaneous seizures at postnatal day (P) 1 and did not survive beyond P30. Intracerebroventricular Scn2a ASO administration into Q/+ mice between P1-2 (that reduced Scn2a mRNA levels by 50%) significantly extended lifespan and markedly reduced spontaneous seizures occurrence. Across a range of cognitive and motor behavioural tests, Scn2a ASO treated Q/+ mice were largely indistinguishable from wildtype (+/+) mice. Further improvements in survival and behaviour were seen by adjustment of dosing regimens during development. Scn2a ASO efficacy was also evident at the cellular level. Whole cell patch clamp recording showed that Scn2a ASO administration reversed changes in neuronal excitability in layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons of Q/+ mice to levels seen in +/+ mice. Safety was assessed in +/+ mice and showed a developmental stage dependent tolerability and a favourable therapeutic index. This study suggests that a human SCN2A gapmer ASO could profoundly and safely impact early seizure onset DEE patients and heralds a new era of precision therapy in neurodevelopmental disorders.

NotiMundo - Felipe Burbano De Lara, Panorama Electoral Y Precandidatos Para Comicios 2021 by FM Mundo

This week’s episode picks up where last week’s conversation left off. The World Food Programme’s Carmen Burbano, chef Floyd Cardoz and Billy Shore delve more deeply into international school feeding programs, cooking with indigenous foods, and the role chefs can play in bringing attention to these issues. “Every country in the world is trying to feed its school children. Keeping kids, specifically girls, in school can really be the key to… stopping the cycle of poverty and hunger,” says Burbano. Cardoz discusses how chefs can shine a spotlight on an issue. “Chefs do have a voice now. These [TV] shows are making us superstars, but no matter which show we are on, we care about what we do, we care about feeding and keeping people happy,” says Cardoz.
Can the U.S. farm-to-table movement inform anti-hunger programs in developing countries? This episode takes an international turn with renowned chef and restaurateur Floyd Cardoz (Bombay Bread Bar, Bombay Canteen, O Pedro) and World Food Programme (WFP) School Feeding Division Director Carmen Burbano for part one of a two-part conversation with host Billy Shore. Indian-born Cardoz says that while the focus on using local ingredients in the U.S. has created economic opportunities for small farmers and suppliers here, people in India still prefer imported food. His restaurants in India are teaching people that traditional, local ingredients can be cool. “If we sustain the community, we sustain the food source, food gets cheaper, more people eat,” he explains. Burbano discusses how WFP connects the demand created by its school feeding programs to smallholder farmer markets in many countries. “This has generated income and livelihood opportunities for millions of farmers, many of them women… and kids are automatically getting more nutritious food,” she notes. In addition to farmers, Burbano discusses developing networks to disseminate nutrition information to pregnant women and young mothers. In Peru, which was battling a childhood anemia epidemic, WFP teamed up with the country’s chef community to create a cooking show (Cocinar con Causa) around better eating and cooking habits to fight anemia. “Chefs have a very important influence on how people choose to eat what they eat,” she says. In India, Cardoz is trying to overcome cultural barriers to teach his community to give back. “Indians believe in giving to the gods, but not so much giving to the community,” he says. He founded a culinary event that brings the community together to raise money for designated causes. “People do want to give, but they don’t know how,” he explains. Join us for this important conversation about innovative solutions to international hunger issues.
