What does an agent do, and how do they help their client reach that dream of their first sale? In our latest episode, Ryan talks with David Boxerbaum (Hollywood Agent and Partner at Verve) to illuminate that process. We also discuss David's high-profile deals, including recent bidding wars for “Occupant” which ended in a high 6 figure sale to New Line, and “I Am Not Alone” which sold to Netflix in another high-six-figure deal.
How do you take an idea from concept, to short story, to a 9 studio bidding war? In our latest episode Ryan talks with Scott Glassgold (a Manager and Producer with well over a decade of experience) about how he did exactly that! After getting his start at New Line Cinema and Disney, Scott Founded Ground Control, an innovative Management and Production company. From there, he's gone on to nurture several short films and initial ideas to final feature films – such as Prospect, The Beyond, and his latest Horrorscope. Scott is no stranger to high-profile deals like his 7 figure sale of "My Wife and I Bought a Ranch" to Netflix, or his most recent bidding war for "Occupant" that ended in a high 6 figure sale to New Line.
Filmmaker and YouTuber Ryan Connolly of Film Riot joins Gemma and Slim to throw some Dutch angles on his four Letterboxd faves, which all happen to be action films of the 1990s: Speed; Die Hard with a Vengeance; The Game and The Matrix. Plus: why Speed has the greatest film score of all time, how did that bus jump that gap, Jeff Daniels and Dennis Hopper cheek-to-cheek, how Keanu reinvented the masculine action hero, how Michael Douglas reinvented it right back, sequels that are better than originals, being able to smell the stink on John McClane through the screen, why '90s practical action stunts just rule, why The Game is a great holiday movie, why Spielberg is the GOAT at the “moving master”, believing in yourself, the importance of working with nice people, the supremacy of Jefferson Airplane's ‘White Rabbit', and why Ryan doesn't rate anything on Letterboxd (except Jurassic Park). Lists & Links: The Letterboxd list of films mentioned in this episode; Ryan's “action films from the 1990s” list, reviews of Speed by Terry, The Game by Dfred22 and Ian West Credits: This episode was recorded in Dallas, Auckland and greater Philadelphia, and edited by Slim. Facts by Jack. Booker: Brian Formo. Transcript by Sophie Shin. Art by Samm. Theme: ‘Vampiros Dancoteque' by Moniker. The Letterboxd Show is a TAPEDECK production.
Well, we made it. #400! I couldn't have imagined that when I started this little podcast back in 2015 that we would ever get here. I say "we" because I couldn't have done it with the IFH Tribe's love and support over the years. I am humbled, grateful, and honored to have the privilege to serve you all. Thank you for everything guys.As promised I wanted to make this episode special and today's guest will do just that. We have filmmaker and founder of the legendary Film Riot Ryan Connelly. Ryan launched Film Riot on Youtube back in 2006 and has been helping indie filmmakers create killer VFX for their films ever since.Ryan has shot over 15 short films and has taken his followers on the journey of how he made them. I've been a big fan of Ryan's for a long time and just love what he has created with Film Riot. Hustle respects HUSTLE!We discuss so much in this conversation. From creating Film Riot to when he'll make his first feature film to how our industry will survive the Coronavirus. I just loved having Ryan on the show.Enjoy my EPIC conversation with Ryan Connelly.
We get it, a lot of you folks out there want to just write, BUT, the industry as a whole is changing and a lot of us out there are folks who wear a few hats (and are successful because of it). Joining us this week to talk about that is Canadian-American Sonja O'Hara who as a writer, director, actor and creator is well versed in such. We had a great conversation with her and we can't wait to have her back to talk about her journey as a multi-hyphenate! Our Weekly Resource: There are a few patron saints of indie film, Robert Rodriguez, Ava Duvernay, Ryan Connolly, Lynn Shelton, Mark Duplass, but Alex Ferarri deserves to also be on that list. His website, Indie Film Hustle, is THE hub for anyone looking to expand themselves and become a multi-hypenate capable of making their dreams and art projects come true. You will find podcasts and interviews with hundreds of guests, including Sonja, sharing their knowledge bombs with what Alex refers to as the tribe and there's information there on literally anything you might want to know about filmmaking wise. Seriously, when it comes to filmmaking resources, IFH is probably matched only by something like Film Riot. Go there and begin your journey down a massive wellspring of knowledge. As a content creator, I love embracing emerging technologies and seeing how they apply to what I want to make. That's why I love seeing what Unreal Engine has been doing. Their free software allows you to create anything in 3D. One such example that's been employing its technology is Disney's The Mandalorian (https://youtu.be/Ufp8weYYDE8). But that's just scratching the surface. They also own Metahumans with allows you to generate 3D characters. And as these develop further, it'll be cheaper and easier to make your own movies using this technology to create the stories you want. Without limits. That's what excites me and what I deep dive in this episode. Have I chosen the right path to get this film made? Should I have moved to LA 10 years ago? Was it the right call to hold out for a better actor? My last pitch seemed to go so well, why didn't they call me back? The road to making your first feature film can be long, treacherous, and full of doubt. This is why you need a friend. A peer. Someone who does what you do. Someone who you can call to vent, to ask questions, to compare notes, and to find the will to keep going. We call it directors therapy, and on today's episode, director Mike Pecci makes a call, to a parallel dimension. He reaches out through the fabric of reality to a fellow director who is on an identical path. A guy who has the same taste in movies, very similar short film ideas, and the same filmmaking goals that keep both directors awake at night. The amazing director Ryan Connolly (Film Riot) returns to the show to share his experiences, fears and relentless need to make that first feature film. Get ready for a passionate therapy session on how the business really works and hopefully find some comfort in the choice you have made to step off the beaten path to follow your dream. Today’s guest is Brent Christy, a cinematographer, and director in Charlotte, North Carolina. Brent has worked on a crazy amount of projects and there's a good chance you've seen his work before, from indy shorts with the Film Riot gang, working in the electrical department in films such as Iron Man 3, and directing and dp'ing several feature films. This man can do it all. In this interview you’ll learn about Brent’s journey into filmmaking, being an incentive chaser, how to work with others on set, networking with high caliber people, comparing and contrasting collaborating with talented directors such as Shea Sizemore and previous guest Justin Robinson, Working with basically no lighting package vs large lighting packages on the films Low Country and Snowbirds, balancing family life with pursuing a film career, directing and dp-ing “western adjacent” feature films, getting the completeness of your ideas on the canvas, how the good stuff is never easy, and the power of simple encouragement. Brent is one of my heroes and it was an honor to hear about his journey in the film industry. Whether you know it or not, you’ve waited a long time for this interview. It's said that if our Associate Producer, Liam D. O'Brien, leaves his hole and sees his shadow, it means 6 more weeks of barbeque episodes on ILWP. Liam joins Host Mike Pecci on this week's special Friday Mini-Episode to address Mike's rant about film school last week and to get Mike's perspective on something we haven't covered much on the show: crowdfunding. One of the most difficult, stressful, and important tasks an independent filmmaker must do is getting people to agree to give you money for your film. But how do you run a successful crowdfunding campaign? Mike and Liam discuss Mike's experience crowdfunding his two concept films: 12KM and Who's There and how indie filmmakers can replicate a successful campaign. Check out Liam's GoFundMe Page: https://gofund.me/d33aeab4 The GoFundMe campaign is going to continue until 03/15 so check it out before then! The question of whether you need to move to LA to make films has been discussed on this show more times than we can count. Host Mike Pecci has repeatedly promoted making films in your hometown. But making films in Boston may seem like skiing in the Adirondacks. They're fine, but you can't really get the same kind of experience as you would going west. Directors Dustin Devlin and Jack Lemay showed that not only can you make a film in Boston worth bragging about, but that it can focus on skiing in the Adirondacks. Mike, Jack, and Dustin discuss the benefits of indie filmmaking, the excitement of action sports filmmaking, and why people might actually like winters in the northeast. That hunger... that drive... that NEED to make your film... it's always there. It's always pulsing in your mind. But what if no one else feels it? What if no one else understands? How do you make it a reality? How much are you willing to put on the line? They say you shouldn't put money into your own film, but is it true? Is it really not worth it? Director Josh Lobo thought it was. Host Mike Pecci and Josh discuss the struggles of directing an independent feature film, how to find your crew, and why putting your own money into your film may be the right decision. How far would you go to make a viral video? Would you make a fool of yourself? Strap on some sexy pants? Beat babies? Technically commit an act of terror? Mike Diva somehow did all of that as he created a slew of classic viral videos like Sexy Sax Guy, the Japanese Trump Commercial, and the Tokyo Stomp. Yeah, he’s that guy. After Mike went viral, he continued on to be a successful music video and commercial director and his most recent epic video for Run the Jewels and the Cyberpunk2077 is a gorgeous cybernetic masterpiece. In this episode, host Mike Pecci talks with Mike Diva about how he went from chasing his shirtless friend around malls to directing commercials for Xbox. Even when you're doing what you think you want to do, it can be really tough. The job of a director isn't just going on set and yelling action or telling someone to do something faster or slower. The job of a director is all of the other work that goes into making a film. The prep work. The research. The story. Finding the crew. Even building up your career to get to where you want and need to be. Director duo Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, also known as Cary & Jon, join Director Mike Pecci to really dive into what it means to work as a director. Today’s guest on the Hometown Hollywood podcast is Justin Robinson, a writer and director in Charlotte, North Carolina. I don’t know if I have ever or will meet anyone else quite like Justin. After watching and crying through his Documentary “My Brother Jordan” which now has over 11 MILLION views and is getting crazy attention all over the world, I started watching tons of his other sketches and short films and I knew I had to get him on the show. If you haven’t seen the doc, I would recommend you watch it as soon as possible. He has a crazy journey and he’s basically worked with all my childhood filmmaking heroes through the years. If you need some motivation to work harder and to be more intentional in life and with your film career, look no further than the soothing, metaphor-filled advice Justin gives in the show. Also, people often confuse him with Columbian Singer “Maluma '' so I thought this background music would be appropriate. In this interview, you’ll learn about Justin's crazy work ethic and sleep struggles, potential ventures in ASMR, Working with YouTube legends like Jamie Costa, Olan Rogers, Brett Driver, and more, where to seek inspiration for great dialogue, How to make filmmaking personal, his strange first encounter with Ryan Connally and the Film Riot gang, Josh Connolly’s untapped acting potential, Art the Fart, Matthew McConaughey and a desert writing cabin, and how he’s handling all the well deserved success of "My Brother Jordan". Justin is a great guy, it was an honor to hear about his journey and I learned a ton from this interview. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did so Let's get right into the show. A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
Last week had most Americans glued to the TV as we awaited election results. Yet in spite of that anxiousness, I was able to be creative by setting aside a few hours to work on my script. I talk about that experience and what I learned. I discuss how I read books as well to keep my mind off screens. Plus I go over the results of Film Riot's MakeFilm competition. Then I tie everything together with Seth Godin's The Practice: Shipping Creative Work book which talks about the need to just do the work, rather than focus on the results. So listen and afterwards, please feel free to ask questions or offer opinions of your own, whether down in the comment section or by hitting me up on social media @PhilSvitek. When was the first time you saw a Quentin Tarantino film? For some of us, it was in a theater. For others, a friend put it on the TV. For the younger audience, it might have been Netflix. But for our guest Richard Gladstein, the first time he saw a Quentin Tarantino film it was a script on his desk. In fact, he was one of the first to see Tarantino's work. Richard's experience in the industry ranges from handing out dog biscuits to producing some of Hollywood's biggest films: Reservoir Dogs, Finding Neverland, The Bourne Identity, and Pulp Fiction. Now, he is the Executive Director of the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. Both Host Mike Pecci and our AP Liam discuss with Richard his producing career, his experience working as one of Tarantino's closest collaborators, and some advice he has for young filmmakers: a topic very important to Richard whose current role is the Executive Director of the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. Our first Producer episode delivers every bit as much as you'd expect it to. A talk with the LEGEND Ryan Connolly!
SO-FLO ROOTSTodd was born in Hollywood, Florida and, although he excelled in sports, the craft of acting came most naturally to him. When he wasn't playing baseball, football or studying martial arts, he and his friends would re-enact scenes from their favorite movies (Jaws and Willy Wonka were frequent choices). In his senior year of high school, Todd was drafted from the football team into the Theater program, starring in the school play and winning district improv competitions. He entered Vanderbilt University on the pre-law track, but soon became more interested in the school's theater program, which included one of the best-equipped true black box theaters in the country. He performed in 13 plays at Vandy, and graduated with a hunger to learn more about acting.SEEKING CHOPSA year after graduating college, Todd headed to New York to attend The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater. The Playhouse had been rated the #1 Acting Program in the U.S. by the Cambridge University Press, and Sanford Meisner's program had the reputation of being one of the toughest in the country. Only 75 students were accepted into the program; and of those, just 24 were invited back to complete the second year. Todd figured, if he could make it there, he could make it anywhere... but did he have the chops? The answer came quickly. At the end of his first year at the Playhouse, Todd was offered a role in the Second-Year Production - the only first-year student to be given such an honor. He was invited back to complete the second year, and he's proud to wear badge of a Neighborhood Playhouse Graduate!CHANGE OF LOCATIONAfter graduating from the Playhouse, Todd moved to Los Angeles with some friends from school, and began trying to navigate the entertainment industry. Just as he was beginning to see some success in L.A., Todd and his family experienced a terrible loss: his brother was killed in a car accident, and Todd moved back to Florida to be with his family. Determined to make the best of his new situation, he explored the film industry in Florida and quickly hooked up with Ryan Connolly, founder of Triune Films and creator of the Film Riot web series. Together, they have made several films and sketches, and their relationship continues to grow.CLIMBING THE LADDERTodd has become one of the most sought-after actors and producers in the low-budget indie film industry. He has starred in and produced film projects across the country in Florida, Georgia, Texas, New Jersey, Tennessee and California. His films can now be seen on Amazon, Netflix, OnDemand, Redbox and in 13 countries around the world. And I learned about Film Riot on YouTube. Plus, my mum will be on sick leave for a year and then probably retire. We'll see. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/iian/message
Relic is the directorial debut of Japanese-Australian writer/director filmmaker, Natalie Erika James. It's a horror film anchored by its deeply emotional and honest themes, and masterfully co-written and directed by James. Released theatrically in drive-ins, and now available across most major streaming platforms, you'd never guess that Relic is Natalie's first outing as a feature writer/director. In the episode of the Film Riot podcast, fresh off the experience of making the film, Natalie meets with Ryan to discuss her experience as a first-time writer/director, working with actors, and why she leaned into the horror genre to tell this specific and personal story.

What would it be like if you could make your own blockbuster film with your family as cast and crew? It all begins with a smartphone, two boys and a playful Dad in the Animation industry. Brian Vowles is our guest in Episode 64 of the SBP Podcast.Brian is a professional animator, video effects, compositor and concept artist gone rogue as a filmmaker. Brian’s dream has always been to be an animator and work on films for a living. He recounts growing up watching old films using animation for effects and being very attracted to that part of filmmaking. Then, Jurassic Park and other films of the like came along and blew his mind. Today, he makes his living doing what he loves. But he also loves his kids and his wife, and so he shares how he went from working endless hours on films you’ve heard about to working on more reasonable, if not—family-friendly projects professionally. In the back of his mind, he always wanted to create his own film project. One day he realized his smartphone camera was pretty incredible and decided to begin his dream film with the cast and crew he loves more than anything else: His family. And so he embarked in an adventure, not just in real life but on film. “Robot Attack” has already won some awards and been in a few film festivals, something he was not even thinking about when he made the film. You may be thinking that if his family was cast and crew, there was no need for things like, pre-production industry standards. Fact is, there was a lot of that in his filmmaking process and it began with The Pitch and moved on to Production Meetings with his two boys who were around 6 and 7 years old. The entire process was documented and the story behind the story of this film is pretty remarkable. Especially when you come to terms with the fact this is a Dad whose kids played a big role in all aspects of the filmmaking process. If you have kids, you know how hard it can be to just get them to bed, much less complete a film from beginning to end. Something even the most adultish filmmakers can find to be a huge challenge! Brian was a lot of fun to chat with and the incredible story he shares is truly inspiring. He shares the work involved in creating giant robots opposite little children in action scenes and being on set for hours just to capture the basics to then spend hours and hours behind the computer creating the movie-magic we are used to in Hollywood films. Brian’s latest film is a one minute film for the Action Scene challenge he made for Film Riot and Collective. Brian shot his latest film, RUN” with the iPhone XR and it is truly mesmerizing! Ryan Connolly has directed over 14 short films, and has amassed over 1.7 million subscribers and 170 million views on his YouTube channel: Film Riot. These are incredible accolades, but for Ryan, it’s only the beginning for him as he pursues his biggest dream of directing a feature film. I’ve been a major fan of him and Film Riot over the years, and his drive is unmatched. Countless times I’ve found the inspiration I need through one of his shorts or DIY videos. In this episode, we discuss what it looks like to chase something so massive while staying true to the process.
Join host Cirina Catania as she interviews Filmmaker, Ryan Connolly as they discuss NAB, his Film Riot web show, when he realized he was creative, Filmmaking, the kind of films he makes, lessons from low resource short films and high resource productions, to always go above and beyond with full passion, and give 110% into each and every project.

Today we start our journey to find that elusive creature known as one's signature style. What exactly does it mean for a filmmaker, or any artist for that matter, to have a signature style? How does he or she get one? How do they develop it? Why should we care? Today we start in earnest the core topic for this first season of Radio Film School. Everything beforehand has been building up and preparing us for this journey. And we have some very inspiring interviews to start us off.Award-winning filmmaking Kevin Shahinian, renown for his Bollywood-style wedding films and Hollywood-calibre production values, provides incredible and poignant insight into the style question from a sophisticated point of view. I have a discussion with Film Riot host Ryan Connolly about his style (and whether or not he thinks he has one). And "Legends of the Knight" director Brett Culp rounds us off with some sage advice on how to develop one's personal style. In the bonus segment post-credits, I FINALLY get around to discussing with JD how it was he that prompted me to pursue filmmaking full-time as a profession.Music in this EpisodeWe have some more great use of Song Freedom songs. Today we have a very special bonus episode of the show. A couple of weeks ago we had Ryan Connolly of Film Riot fame talking about the disasters he encountered making his short film “U.F. Oh Yeah.” Ryan's DP on that shoot was the talented Mr. Ryan Booth. Ryan Booth is the creator of Serialbox.tv, a cinematic sensation whereby Booth and his team record one-take acoustical performances of indie bands, shoot them with multiple cameras, and edit it music video style. If you’ve never seen them, go check ‘em out at Serialbox.tv.But here’s the thing, Ryan Booth’s style of cinematography is very different from the type of work Ryan Connolly usually puts out. I was curious as to why Connolly chose Booth to DP this film. In today’s bonus episode we hear from both of them regarding that decision.
A film set is kinda like a spaceship barreling through space. Something almost always goes wrong. This week we have one of my favorite episodes of the show so far. It's fun, funny, yet still packs a potent and poignant punch. We hear from We Make Movies CEO Sam Mestman and Film Riot host Ryan Connolly about some of the most disastrous film shoots they've directed. As is always the case in life, from these challenges came great lessons. Then that international dapper DP Philip Bloom ties it all very nicely with a bow at the end. This episode is quite special.
