James Young from Melbourne’s iconic Cherry Bar dropped in to spill the tea on the night Lady Gaga partied so hard, she left on her hands and knees—literally crawling up ACDC Lane. From booking clashes with a Mildura blues duo to five-hour Gaga dance marathons, this story has it all. She rocked the bar solo, requested Judas Priest, and proved why she’s the real Queen of Pop and rock. The night became legendary… and we reckon her post-Marvel Stadium plans might just include another Cherry Bar cameo
Interview by Kris PetersPlaytime is over. Now shit gets real.Much has been made of Frankenbok welcoming back original vocalist Hutchy to launch their next foray into the world of metal, but as fun as the honeymoon period has been it's now time to let their music do the talking.Following the frenetic Demon Tantrum, the tongue in cheek cover of (You Spin Me) Right Round and the most recent track Dopamine, Frankenbok are preparing to throw all their cards on the table today, January 31, with the release of the first EP under the current regime in the form of Irrepressible. Not that anyone who has been a part of Australian metal at any stage over the last quarter of a century would - or could - have any doubts, but it almost feels like Frankenbok have got a point to prove. The band have had an ever-evolving sound, mainly due to a merry-go-round of vocalists over the years, but from all reports Irrepressible is a large step back to the early days of the band where pretty much anything went and the focus was, first and foremost, on enjoying playing music.HEAVY sat down for a chat with guitarist Azza Bok and vocalist Hutchy to get the lowdown in a chat that got so involved we had to split the video into two parts for easier digestion."It was a real cathartic moment for me personally as well," Hutchy explained when talk turned to him rejoining the band. "I turned up to Cherry Bar and someone said Frankenbok was playing, and I thought I'm not in the mood for any bullshit and Aaron walked straight up to me, looked me dead in the eye, extended his hand and said some really nice words and defused the situation. It felt like a whole weight had lifted off my shoulders. I made my peace many years ago, but we obviously hadn't spoken for a while. It started that next step for the things that came to follow."So the big question is what can we expect from the new music?"It's a homage to all the Frankenbok over the years," Hutchy measured. "When I approached it vocally and lyrically I went back and listened to all the albums and stuff and got inspired by everybody. I've got this reputation as being a bit of a Mike Patton try-hard, so I went back, and I tried to be inspired by Frankenbok, and make a Frankenbok record. It's got all the great elements of Frankenbok, but hopefully something new as well. I think it's a very refined, mature Frankenbok as well. I'm really proud of it. I never thought it was going to turn out like this.""And I know people always say this about their latest album, but I will legitimately say it's my favourite one to date," Azza chimed in. "I went through years of writing it and listening to it over and over and over and getting it done, but now when I listen to it, I legitimately really, really enjoy it. I love the sound of it. I love what everybody did to it. There was no… I said to everybody, you do whatever the fuck you wanna do, just do it the best you can."In the full interview we cover more ground on how Hutchy came back to the Frankenbok camp, lessons learnt musically by both of them over the last two decades, writing new material and settling into a groove, more on what to expect from the new music, we analyse each of the five tracks in more detail, discuss future live shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Sydney punk reprobates FANGZ are in the thick of things of late. They just recently finished a massive national run as support to Cancer Bats, and have been busying themselves with releasing new music and generally making life a party wherever they go.True Aussie legends in their own right, FANGZ are a fresh band with an old-school mentality. They play hard and party harder without pause for reflection or decision. That hypothesis will be put to the test this weekend when FANGZ set out to do the almost impossible.A 24-hour East Coast tour.Let that sink in. FANGZ are planning a WHOLE East Coast tour in the same amount of time it allegedly takes the sun to do a lap of the Earth. Starting at the Cherry Bar in Melbourne as Friday night rolls into Saturday morning - so August 31 - the boys then travel to Sydney for a show at Bootleggers precisely 12 hours later and finish up at Greaser in Brisbane before the clock strikes midnight, thus completing an East Coast tour in 24 hours. It sounds too much of an effort to even think about, let alone attempt to pull off, so HEAVY tracked down frontman Joshua Cottreau to see how serious this whole thing is."What do you think?" Cottreau fires back at me when I ask if it is even possible. "It doesn't make sense to NOT try and do that," he laughed. "You know us by now. I'd put more in if I could. I don't think it's that unreasonable. The only thing, obviously, is flights because we're on a tight schedule. As long as everything goes according to plan, it should be sweet. We're really stoked. I think it's a pretty insane idea, but I don't really know anyone else who's done it (laughs). You've gotta go for it, right?"In the full interview, Joshua talks more about the 24 hour East Coast tour, the new track Same Old Story and its nostalgic video, their style of music and why it is so infectious, gives us the scoop on a new - debut - album, their musical growth over the course of three EP's, the upcoming Froth & Fury festival and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Live music is a big part of Melbourne's DNA. On any night of the week, in the heart of the city, you'll find a venue somewhere that's showcasing live music. Some incredible names have graced the stages of Melbourne's CBD music venues... and if those walls could talk, they'd tell a million stories. In this episode, we explore the city streets to bring you some of those incredible tales... like the time Noel Gallagher offered to buy Cherry Bar (or did he?)... Madonna's weird clown gig at The Forum... and The Confidence Man gig at 170 Russell that led to an unexpected outcome for Telenova's Angie Armstrong.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There is definitely something special about Australian rock.No matter how many bands around the world try to emulate that spirit, few actually get close to the sound that has shaped a nation. What many people outside of this country can't comprehend is that Aussie rock can't be just learnt or played. It has to exist inside you, gnawing away at your bones until it reaches the surface and manifests itself into something much more.Bands like Rose Tattoo, The Poor and the Screaming Jets have that rock swagger in abundance but most of the new or emerging generation can't quite seem to grasp the concept. So, then, it is refreshing and exciting when a new band comes on the scene that taps straight into that invisible well of talent and moves backwards to go forwards on a musical plain.Usually – as is the case with Truck – the band members have some pedigree in the old school of rock, for this is something difficult to learn and even harder to master. With an engine room that involves Baby Animals guitarist Dave Leslie and the vocal prowess of Andy McLean from Horsehead there was never any doubt what trajectory Truck's music would follow. It is exactly what you would expect.Pure Aussie rock. Front to back. Side to side. In and out. After releasing their third single in eight months, the raw and rock drenched number Unconventionally Rising, Truck drove straight out to the highway for a string of shows with Baby Animals and Rose Tattoo, proving the old adage that music is in the blood. Yes, it can be taught, but lessons can only ever teach you so much.HEAVY caught up with Dave for a chat and to find out how he has managed to keep the rock flame burning successfully for so long."This is kind of the stuff we grew up on, you know,” he agreed. “As far as that aesthetic goes, we wanted to be old school, heavy like Deep Purple and the Faces, that sort of thing. Just unapologetically classic rock. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel or anything like that, but we definitely wear our influences on our sleeves."While I have him on a roll, I ask Dave what it is that he thinks defines the spirit of Aussie rock."I think Angry Anderson put it well one time when he said no-one attacks a guitar like an Australian,” he laughed. “There's a certain sort of... you play from the front foot, you know what I mean? It's like there's a bit of a kill aspect going, and we have that as well. One time we supported Rose Tattoo down here in Melbourne and they did their soundcheck then we jumped up and they let us use their drum kit and everything like that, and all the foldback levels were set from where their sound check was, and man, it was the loudest gig we have ever played. The crew were like phwar. There was guitar screaming at me through wedges and I thought wow, this is so loud, and the crew were saying do you want us to turn it down and we said no, no (laughs). It was blistering, but we had a really good night that night as a result of that."In the full interview, Dave talks about finding like minded musicians to play in Truck with, the new single Unconventionally Rising, their limited edition physical EP, plans to extend that into an album, being on the road with Rose Tattoo and Baby Animals, playing two shows some nights with different bands and how he focusses, their upcoming single launch party at Melbourne's Cherry Bar and more. Dave Higgo Higgins. If you're a rock or metal fan in Australia, chances are you'll know who Higgo is. Best known for his stints in mainstream radio, in particular Triple M's distortion. Higgo is deep in the music world and has used his career in radio to celebrate his passion for original and homegrown music. In fact, Higgo has been a big proponent for Australian music for many years, often giving air time and exposure to countless numbers of bands over the years when many others working in mainstream radio did not. Through this love of music, he's also got behind live music in Melbourne putting on yearly metal/rock events at the famous Cherry Bar. Like many of us, it hasn't always been smooth sailing for Higgo and he's been through a lot of tragedy and personal challenges over the years. Using his public platform, Higgo has openly discussed his battles with depression and his thoughts on the topic of suicide, especially those in the public. Life is good these days, but there will always be moments along the way and Higgo hopes that others are encouraged to speak more and seek support. I spent a fair bit of time talking to Higgo about mental health, in particular depression and some of the challenges we have discussing feelings (especially us 'blokes'!). I also got into Higgo's ear about his career in radio, how he got started, life in a bird seed factory, his love of music and heaps more. I got a hell of a lot out of this chat with Dave and hope you do too. Brent DeBoer is a songwriter and musician. I first met him in unique circumstances in September 2010, when my partner and I won a competition to fly to the United States and interview The Dandy Warhols at their studio in Portland, Oregon. This was a promotional tie-in because the band were booked to play at Parklife Festival that year, so we were accompanied by a cameraman for Australian website Pedestrian.TV, who filmed the encounter and cut a short video about our experience. (The entire interview was later published on TheVine.com.au). I’m a big fan of The Dandy Warhols; they’re one of the best live rock bands I’ve seen, and as a solid drummer and co-vocalist, Brent is a key part of their appeal. Born in Portland and based there for most of his life, Brent has called Melbourne home since 2010, after he married an Australian and relocated. When he’s not touring or recording with The Dandy Warhols, he’s inevitably doing the same with his Australian band, Immigrant Union, who this year released their second album, entitled Anyway. It’s a brilliant piece of work, and one of my favourites of 2015. When reviewing Anyway for The Weekend Australian in June, I described it as “a timeless album for all moods and seasons” and gave it four-and-a-half stars. Besides his excellent musicianship and songwriting in two of my favourite bands, though, I actually didn’t know much about Brent’s past or his path into music, so I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him a little better during this interview, which took place upstairs at Lefty’s Music Hall in Brisbane, a few hours before Immigrant Union played three sets there on a Thursday evening in late August. Brent was jet-lagged, and spent most of the interview either staring out the window, watching the fading light, or with his eyes closed, while darkness gradually consumed the room where we sat. Our conversation touches on how he learned to play the drums at age five; how he manifested his own destiny as a child, when he would imagine playing to a sea of people who were all there to watch him play drums; a favourite prank of his when playing to drunk fraternity crowds in his early career; how he was asked to join The Dandy Warhols in 1998 and how he struggled for a couple of years with the demands of the role; and the differences between being a drummer who sings in that band and being a singer-guitarist in Immigrant Union. Brent DeBoer was born in Portland, Oregon, where his parents bought him a drum set for Christmas when he was five years old. By the age of 16 he had formed his first band, Spoon, with Rick Bain. Just out of college, in 1998, he joined The Dandy Warhols as their drummer. After moving to Melbourne, in 2010, he was at the iconic Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane. It was here that he began to form a band called Immigrant Union with Bob Harrow and Peter Lubulwa, taking on the role of lead guitar and lead vocals. The Dandy Warhols will release their ninth studio album in 2016 and they continue to tour the world extensively. Immigrant Union recently released their critically acclaimed second studio album entitled Anyway.
