Bleav presents On The List with Brett Gursky

It's the seventy-first episode of On The List with Brett Gursky. This week's guest Walt Becker talks all about his career as a director. Walt and Brett talk about his latest movie “Clifford the Big Red Dog”, which was both the #1 family film at the box office and the #1 trending movie on Paramount Plus. Walt gives Brett behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the live-action film starring a CGI dog. They discuss the history of Norman Bridwell's iconic Clifford character, which spawned 80 books and an animated series. They also chat about the breaking news that the movie will be getting a sequel. Then Walt takes Brett back to the beginning, from growing up in California and making home movies to attending USC film school. Walt explains how he got to direct his first movie “Buying the Cow”, which starred Jerry O'Connell and a newcomer named Ryan Reynolds, and how that led to Walt & Ryan making their breakthrough movie “National Lampoon's Van Wilder”. Walt tells Brett how he got his next film “Wild Hogs” and how he assembled the cast that included John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy, Ray Liotta, and Marisa Tomei. Then Walt talks about working with John Travolta again on “Old Dogs” and adding the legendary Robin Williams to the mix. They also chat about Walt's TV shows “Glory Daze” and “Kirby Buckets” and how he started directing family films with the blockbuster hit “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”. Last but not least, Walt shares his advice for aspiring filmmakers. Be sure to check out “Clifford the Big Red Dog” at a theater near you or on Paramount Plus.

On this week Sam went to see smash hit comedy Zoolander 2 with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and the rest of the gang reprising their roles as the clueless but lovable ridiculously good looking models. He was baffled by a large sprawling film which seemed to mainly consist of political machinations in 9th century China and definitely didn't have Ben Stiller in it. It was only when the credits rolled that he realised that he'd actually gone to wrong screen and had watched the entirety of The Assassin, a sumptuous epic from esteemed Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien....so he reviewed that instead. Meanwhile Danny went to check out Alvin and Chipmunks: The Road Chip. He was initially impressed by the stellar A list cast- Ralph Fiennes as Alvin with Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson as the chipmunks?! It all seemed to implausible to be true and it turned out it was as what he'd actually watched was A Bigger Splash - a film about sexy rich people hating each other on a beautiful Italian island. He didn't mind though because he thought it was like well good. They also discuss the latest news from enfant terrible, agent provocateur Danish wunderkin Lars Von trier......and wonder if Stephen Fry was replaced with a life size cut out of Stephen Fry which just emitted a string of sycophantic adjectives every four minutes anyone at the Baftas would notice. Chris and Dylan reconvene to talk about Carol, the new Todd Haynes film starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. There's some news about Avatar and X-Men Apocalypse, as well as some new releases. Chris watched his second Adam Sandler movie this year with Netflix's second feature film, The Ridiculous 6. Meanwhile, Dylan saw both Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and the horror/western Bone Tomawhawk. Next week there's a pretty big movie coming out, but instead of reviewing Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, we're going to give you all a review of the smaller film, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Show Notes: (1:49) Carol Review (23:42) Carol Spoilers (34:21) X-Men: Apocalypse had a trailer. We discuss it. (38:23) Don't worry, James Cameron is going to have Avatar movies for the rest of your life. (43:41) New Releases (55:20) The Hateful Eight started out as a sequel to Django Unchained. We believe that foreshadows the ending of the film, but what do we know. (58:28) The Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (62:07) The Ridiculous 6 (71:02) Bone Tomahawk (77:31) Closing comments and hear the excitement from us as we prep for Star Wars. You can find more written content, including a late review of Mr. Right that Chris saw at TIFF this year, at www.infiniterespawns.com.
