En el duodécimo episodio de Manderley —en el que contamos con la participación de Carlos Balbuena y Víctor Esquirol— hablamos de LA PISCINE (LA PISCINA) de Jacques Deray de 1969 y del remake libremente basado en ella que realizó Luca Guadagnino en 2015, A BIGGER SPLASH (CEGADOS POR EL SOL). En el primer bloque, dedicado a la película de Deray, hablamos de la importancia de su guionista Jean-Claude Carrière y su montaje. También del reparto (que incluye a Jane Birkin y Maurice Ronet) y en detalle del contexto de la relación de Alain Delon y Romy Schneider más allá de las imágenes de ficción del relato; de los vínculos de la cinta con el polar francés, el «thriller» erótico y el concepto de «huis-clos»; y por último, de las conexiones con otras «summer movies» como El nadador (Frank Perry, 1968), Muerte bajo el sol (Guy Hamilton, 1982), Swimming Pool (François Ozon, 2003) o Holiday (Isabella Eklöf, 2018). It may even be fate that willed us, catching an early preview screening the same week in an RPX ("shaky seats") theatre. Swimmingpooler fyller landskapet på platser som inte är avsedda för människor. Men vad står de för egentligen? Petter Lindblad Ehnborg dyker ner i filmhistorien i jakt på svar. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Filmhistoriens kändaste swimmingpool inleder Billy Wilders Sunset Boulevard från 1950. Los Angeles mordrotel anländer till den bedagade stumfilmsstjärnan Norma Desmonds kråkslott. I simbassängen ligger en död manusförfattare. Joe Gillis stumma ansikte filmas från botten men hans röst talar från andra sidan döden, lika skämtsam som alltid. ”Den stackars dumskallen”, säger han. ”Han hade alltid velat ha en pool. Och tja, i slutänden fick han en. Bara det att priset blev lite väl högt.”Joe är en av många som sökt slå sig fram i Hollywood och misslyckats, bara för att falla tillbaka i rollen som Norma Desmonds hållherre. Han får uppehälle och skräddarsydda plagg mot att motvilligt sola sig i hennes falnade glans. Hon betalar hans skulder så länge han spelar med och ser sig förvandlad till rekvisita i hennes vanföreställning om att ännu vara åtrådd av massorna. För Joe var poolen medan han ännu levde en tydlig symbol för framgången mot vilken han strävat, en dröm om Hollywood som han förstås varit långt ifrån ensam om att drömma.Redan på 1910-talet blev swimmingpoolen ett av de främsta exemplen på iögonfallande konsumtion bland västkustens nyrika filmelit. Senare under seklet öppnades drömmen upp för en växande medelklass i takt med tekniska landvinningar och ökat välstånd. Liksom andra kaliforniska drömmar visade den sig väl lämpad för export. Ett azurblått pärlband av rektanglar och njurformade bassänger rullades ut över de svällande amerikanska villaförorterna. Så fjärran som i Falun lät arkitekten Jack Hanson år 1963 rita en villa åt sig själv, med en pool där tretton simmade längder blev exakt hundra meter.Swimmingpoolens symbolism under sextiotalet kan tyckas lika självklar som banal. Att bli med pool var på sätt och vis att vara framme: att ha jobbat hårt och belönas med det goda livet – det okomplicerade, ständigt salongsberusade. Eller åtminstone att uppnå bilden av detsamma, och vilken bild sedan! Få saker gör sig väl lika bra inför ögat som solglitter mot vatten och vågformigt kakel. Vem kan väl undgå att dyka in i en pool som den i David Hockneys målning A Bigger Splash från 1967, vilken inte för inte avbildats från ett fotografi, och alltså är en bild av en bild.Konstnärens kaliforniska dröm fick snart vingar och spred sig över världen. Tio år efter Hockneys större stänk blev den japanske illustratören Hiroshi Nagais vagt kaliforniska, spöklikt obefolkade pooler, stillahavsstränder och anonyma skylines i skymningen den kanske främsta illustrationen till stämningarna under den inhemska bubbelekonomins uppgång och fall. Inte minst då han återkommande illustrerade skivomslagen till erans soundtrack, den luftiga hissmusiken City Pop.Samtidigt finns en mörk underström till framgångssagans solglittrande symbolism. Att lyssna på City Pop är att lyssna till ljudet av ett tuggummi på väg att spricka. I Falun lät Jack Hanson bygga in sin utomhuspool för att undvika att den fylldes av svenska höstlöv. Hockneys stillsamma målning bryts av en olycksbådande vattenkaskad som till skillnad från resten av duken tog veckor att måla. Och för Joe Gillis blir swimmingpoolen ett kärl för framgången mot vilken han strävat, men också för risken att drunkna i densamma. Eller än värre: att aldrig nå fram. Kanske är ett återvändande till Mellanvästerns dammstormar och ett liv som lokalreporter faktiskt ett öde värre än döden?I gränslandet mellan framgång och flopp blir poolen så en möjlig symbol för risken att sikta för högt, drabbas av hybris och invaggas i tron att illusioner är eviga. Sunset Boulevard:s bild av liket som flyter på mage och blickar mot poolens botten har över tid blivit en kliché som återvunnits i åtskilliga filmer och kriminalromaner, inte sällan för att illustrera just fall från höga höjder. De döda är människor som blivit övermodiga, slagit sig i slang med fel personer, och till sist bitits i svansen av sin orättfärdigt fångna makt eller rikedom.Sådana berättelser handlar inte minst om illusioner som bryts, en ordnad fasad som krackelerar. Just lättjans bländverk och spänningsfältet mellan ordning och oreda är sådana frågor som upptar Joan Didion då hon betraktar den kaliforniska swimmingpoolen. I essän Holy Water från 1979 vänder hon sig mot den vanliga bilden av den privata bassängen som en symbol för uppnått välstånd och en njutningslysten kroppskultur. För den kaliforniska människan är poolen enligt Didion snarare en symbol för ordning, kontroll över det okontrollerbara. Som hon skriver: ”En pool är vatten, tillgängliggjort och användbart, och är, som sådant, oändligt lugnande för det västliga ögat.” Den amerikanska västern, alltså den som enligt Didion börjar där den årliga nederbörden sjunker under tjugo tum.Essän låter ana att Didion om hon valt bort pennan hade kunnat bli en lika framgångsrik vattenbyggnadsingenjör. Hon vittnar om ett intensivt intresse för de infrastrukturella arrangemang som möjliggjort blomstrande metropoler på en plats som ur naturens perspektiv är ren öken. Reservoarer, kanaler och akvedukter, ett intrikat nätverk av sensorer, datorer och samstämda människor som alla strävar efter att upprätthålla vrångbilden att Kalifornien är en plats lämpad för människor. Som hon skriver: ”Det kaliforniska livets skenbara lätthet är en illusion, och de som tror att illusionen är verklig lever här bara på det mest tillfälliga vis.” Kanske är dessa tillfälliga gäster just sådana som utbölingarna Joe Gillis och Norma Desmond, invånare i en stad som spelar sig själv, där både människor och hus kan liknas vid kulisser.Didions text kan tyckas profetisk inte minst då den skrevs långt innan den allmänna insikten om det existentiella hot mot mänskligheten som den globala uppvärmningen innebär. I den privata swimmingpoolen, nedgrävd i torkans Kalifornien, urskiljer hon en ojämn dragkamp mellan drömmen om att tämja naturen och det i grunden otämjbara i delstatens jordbävningar, eldstormar och översvämningar – företeelser som sedan dess ökat i såväl frekvens som omfattning. Kanske är till och med den döde Joe Gillis en i sammanhanget oväntad profet: nog fick vi en pool alltid – men kanske blev priset väl högt?Också Norma Desmond får betala dyrt, även om hennes drunkning snarare är av det bildliga slaget. I Sunset Boulevard:s slutscen möts hon, Joe Gillis mörderska, mästaren i förnekelse, av polis och pressuppbåd, men tror sig mitt i myllret vara tillbaka i filmstudion för en inspelning. Hon har klängt fast vid en dröm så desperat att den omslutit henne som mörka vatten. Filmens allra sista klipp blir så en spegelbild av dess inledning. Nu är det Norma som bryter den fjärde väggen och vänder sig mot kameran, med samma uppspärrade ögon och likstela ansikte som tidigare Joe Gillis. Deswegen haben wir uns zum ersten Mal die liebe Schlogger und ihren Kollegen Timo vom Tele-Stammtisch zu Antje und Schröck auf die Couch geholt. Denn dann können die Vier auch gleich noch über SALTBURN und DIE SCHNEEGESELLSCHAFT sprechen, die es nicht mehr in eine der Sendungen des letzten Jahres geschafft haben. Und wo wir schon bei Streaming-Tipps sind, machen wir dann auch noch mit ROMEO MUST DIE, dem MAPPA-Anime MABOROSHI, dem süßen POLITE SOCIETY und dem gut gespielten A THOUSAND AND ONE weiter. Gefolgt von ein paar Mediatheken-Titeln, zu denen unter anderem KARATE KID 1+2, THE FOREIGNER, A BIGGER SPLASH und DIE KARTE MEINER TRÄUME gehören. Darüber hinaus geht es heute auch um ein paar News. Zum Beispiel, dass es ein 3. Remake von THE BLOB geben wird. Dass Gerard Butler beim Live-Action-Remake von DRACHENZÄHMEN LEICHT GEMACHT die selbe Rolle übernimmt, die er schon in den Animationsversionen synchronisiert hat. Oder dass das Remake von DIE NACKTE KANONE noch längst nicht vom Tisch ist und Liam Neeson immer noch darauf wartet, als Frank Drebin Jr. von einer Welt zu träumen, in der man problemlos aus jeder Toilette trinken kann. Und natürlich wird wie immer auch über geredet, was zuletzt gesehen wurde. Was bei Antje ein wenig schwierig ist, da sie gerade in ein Rabbit Hole von Thriller-Serien basierend auf den Romanen von Harlan Coben gefallen ist und wir im Strudel aus ICH SCHWEIGE FÜR DICH oder WER EINMAL LÜGT irgendwann den Faden verloren haben. Deswegen versucht sich Timo kurz zu halten, wenn es um die HOBBIT-Trilogie im Extended Cut geht, während Schlogger und Daniel dann doch etwas länger auf Jonathan Glazers ZONE OF INTEREST eingehen müssen, denn sie frisch vor der Aufzeichnung gesehen haben. Geht also schon gut los, das neue Jahr. Wir hoffen, es ist auch nach Eurem Geschmack und wünschen und gute Unterhaltung. Bleibt gesund und gut drauf, viel Spaß im Kino oder auf der Couch und hasta luego.

Kein Flugschein: INDIANA JONES UND DAS RAD DES SCHICKSALS sind endlich im Kino gelandet und gemeinsam mit Sebastian von Filmstarts wollen Antje, Silke und Schröck nun klären, ob die Rückkehr unseres Kindheitshelden eine weise Wahl oder doch ein hüftsteifer Verrat an Shiva war. Außerdem schmunzeln die Vier über die Rückkehr von EISKALTE ENGEL und werfen noch mal einen Blick auf die Kinostarts, die wir letzte Woche aufgrund der ausgefallenen Folge nicht besprechen konnten. So fangen wir ein paar Funken von ELEMENTAL auf, begutachten THE SCARS OF ALI BOULALA, klopfen THE KNOCKING auf seine Grusel-Tauglichkeit ab und empfinden no hard feelings angesichts NO HARD FEELINGS. Darüber hinaus gibt's wie immer ein paar Mediatheken- wie Streaming-Tipps, die sich aus neuen und alten Titeln (also von letzter Woche) zusammensetzen. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel Streifen wie YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, PARASITE, die alte TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTELS-Trilogie, das Regiedebüt MID90s oder öffentlich-rechtlich abrufbare Titel wie HIJACKING, A BIGGER SPLASH, BRIMSTONE und der Vigilanten-Klassiker EIN MANN SIEHT ROT. Zusätzlich schummeln sich auch noch BATTLE ROYALE und GLÜCKLICH WIE LAZZARO mit rein. Und wie immer berichten alle noch ein wenig über das, was sie zuletzt gesehen haben. So wie die gesamte INSIDIOUS-Reihe, die sich Sebastian zur Vorbereitung auf Teil 5 noch mal gegeben hat. Ähnlich fleißig war auch Antje, die sich nicht nur die neue Staffel BLACK MIRROR, sondern auch eine Serie namens THE FALL gegeben hat, bevor und nachdem sie auch noch ein Auge auf CLERKS 3 geworfen konnte. Abgerundet durch die Schröckerts, deren Freizeitprogramm von DAS SÖLDNERKOMMANDO über den Weihnachts-Evergreen SCHÖNE BESCHERUNG bis hin zu WEDNESDAY und einer weiteren Sichtung von DUNGEONS & DRAGONS - EHRE UNTER DIEBEN reicht. Ergibt unterm Strich eine schöne Folge, die hoffentlich alle Befindlichkeiten zum Thema INDIANA JONES UND DAS RAD DES SCHICKSALS aufgreift und dann auch mal eine etwas positivere Stimmung transportieren kann. In diesem Sinne: bleibt gesund, gut drauf und dann in den Kommentaren auch so fair wie bisher. Oscar-winning film-maker Damien Chazelle talks to John Wilson about his career and cultural influences. As a child, Chazelle first started experimenting with making films using his dad's old camcorder. After studying filmmaking at Harvard, he drew on his own experiences as a skilful jazz drummer to make his debut feature film Whiplash, about a music student and his abusive teacher. His movie La La Land, a musical in which star-crossed lovers sing and dance through the backstreets of LA, won six more Academy Awards. Damien explains how much that film owes to the Jacques Demy and Michel Legrand's 1964 romantic musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. He also reveals how the Los Angeles paintings of David Hockney, and in particular his 1967 work A Bigger Splash, inspired the feel and the palate of La La Land. Chazelle's latest movie Babylon explores the birth of the film industry itself and the painful transition from silent movies to the talkies, and is inspired, in part, by the classic musical Singin' in The Rain. "Bones And All" had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received positive notices for how well it blended different genres to create a moving, layered and singular work. An adaptation of the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis, screenwriter David Kajganich is reuniting with director Luca Guadagnino after previously collaborating on "A Bigger Splash" and "Suspiria," and the result has put the film in the awards conversation. During a summer of heatwaves, writer and artist Lara Haworth found herself at the poolside surrounded by beach towels and bare flesh. Cooling off from the soaring temperatures, she recalls childhood crushes, Deborah Levy's iconic novel Swimming Home, and the watery tumult depicted in the film A Bigger Splash. Following these rivulets of desire, she traces the history of public lidos and a cultural lineage of swimming, wondering how bodies of water seem to suggest the erotic. In these communal spaces, where exposed skin drips, young lovers meet and daredevils leap, anything seems possible. Snart fyller David Hockney 80 år och för att fira det så visar Tate Britain, i London, just nu en stor retrospektiv utställning med hans verk, den största någonsin faktiskt. Den öppnade förra veckan, men har redan slagit rekord i biljettförsäljning för Tate Britain. Men så är David Hockney en sorts brittisk nationalhjälte. En excentriker med exceptionell talang vars konstverk är lättillgängliga. De behöver inga akademiska tolkningar för att begripas, eller uppskattas. Tilda Swinton stars as Marianne Lane, a Bowie-esque,world renown rock star who is on vacation with Paul, her documentarian boyfriend of six years, on Pantelleria, a small, secluded Mediterranean island off between the coasts of Sicily and Tunisia. Marianne is there for some R&R from her most recent tour, in recovery from surgery on her throat that she is hoping will be successful so that she can resume her singing career. Their "alone time" is soon ended by the arrival of her rambunctious previous lover and legendary music producer Harry Hawkes, along with the grown daughter Harry has only recently discovered, Penelope, ostensibly as a friendly visit, but it soon becomes apparent that they're seeking to cause division in the relationship for their own ends.

In which Jason and Rebecca praise the visionary originality of THE LOBSTER, the seductive thrills of A BIGGER SPLASH, and the gut-busting comedy antics of NEIGHBORS 2 before the annoyingly unfunny THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE shows up and curdles our positivity.

Vinyl is an upcoming HBO tv drama created by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, starring Bobby Cannavale as a music executive in late 1970s New York who hustles to make a career out of the city's diverse music scene.Staying with the world of record production, Tilda Swinton plays a rock star recovering from surgery on an Italian island in the new film A Bigger Splash from director Luca Guadagnino. The film is a remake of La Piscine (1969) and also stars Ralph Fiennes. Antonia Quirke and Boyd Hilton review the two productions.Melvyn Bragg remembers his fellow Cumbrian writer Margaret Forster, who died today.
