Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal has been at the helm of education in this state for seven of the most challenging years in education in recent memory. But that hasn't dissuaded him from seeking a third term this November. In this episode, Reykdal steers us through the complex terrain of educational policy, public opinion and a changing world that will demand innovation and adaptation from educators as we move into the future. It's a candid look at the public school system's resilience and adaptability in the face of a world irrevocably changed by the pandemic, where student populations are declining, educators often find themselves under attack from vocal detractors in their communities and a mental health crisis plagues classrooms across the country. Reykdal finds hope in the transformative potential of dual-language programs, equity, inclusivity and the possibility of reimagining the ways our high schools can best provide the education all students need for future success. Throughout history, Reykdal says, public school systems have come under attack from various quarters. This, too, shall pass, he believes and the job of educators is to keep their eye on the prize - learning according to the needs of each child. While he never contends the job is or will be an easy one, Reykdal frames the future of education in Washington State with a refreshing optimism as he vies to continue leading the state's 295 public school districts and their combined total of more than a million students.Find out more about Superintendent Chris Reykdal online at:Washington Office of Superintendent of Public InstructionAnd his official campaign site, Elect Chris Reykdal."Outliers in Education" is a project of CEE, The Center for Educational Effectiveness. Take a look at this man. I call him Pervert Zero. In my opinion, he is a pervert. In my opinion, he is harmful and spiritually captured. Factually speaking, he is the boss of government schools in the separate country of Washington. His name is Chris Reykdal. He was the first of the school bosses to be convinced to sexually mess kids up and groom them into becoming sexual pleasure toys for adults. It's just my opinion, but I can back it up. He spent a year or so advocating for a curriculum that is ‘sexually appropriate” in schools. I want to talk about how he did this and take a look at how I tried to expose this. Thank God there is now an effort to expose what is being done to our children. There is a new documentary coming out called “Quiet On Set” that is about exposing pedophilia at Nickelodeon. Just like at Nickelodeon or at a school, sexual predators are drawn to bottlenecks of power. In Outagamie County, Adam Westrbook, the human resources director for the county was arrested for possession of child pornography. If only there were clues, like dressing up as a woman, an over sexualized version of a nun. Oh wait, that's exactly what he did. What does God's Word say? Leviticus 18:21 You shall not give any of your children to offer them to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.Deuteronomy 12:31 You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.2 Kings 23:10 And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no one might burn his son or his daughter as an offering to Molech.2 Kings 16:3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel. He even burned his son as an offering, according to the despicable practices of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel.Episode 1,420 Links:DEVELOPING: There is a documentary titled “Quiet on Set” coming out that is exposing the pedophilia in Nickelodeon which hints of Dan Schneider's on set behavior and talks on the topic of sexual assault. School board races are front and center in this year's election, and for good reason. The stakes could not be higher. We know that the vast majority of Americans support an honest public education for our children, even at a time when that education is under assault. So this week, we hear from Washington Superintendent of Public Education, Chris Reykdal. He spoke recently at a meeting put on by Indivisible Tacoma to address the importance of this year's election, among many other issues facing our schools. We're proud to bring you the entirety of that conversation here.

GUEST: Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, joins KVI's John Carlson to discuss his support for a bill in the state Legislature that would provide free lunch to all K-12 public school students. House Bill 1238 and Senate Bill 5339 are called the "Washington Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act." Reykdal and Carlson diverge on the ethos that free meals in school should be means tested based on income qualification. Reykdal pitches his plan as a way to give middle and upper class families a break on costs to feed their kids at school, the burning question remains: will all kids actually want to eat the free school lunch meal or will most kids still bring their own food to eat rather than scarf down what the school offers.

The state's top education official and a Seattle teacher's union leader discuss lessons learned and the path forward. Concern over America's students predates the pandemic. Education — and public education, especially — is always in some form of crisis for someone. Gaps in student opportunity and achievement, for instance, existed long before anyone had heard of COVID–19. What the pandemic did, though — and this is a well-worn idea for anyone who has been tracking reports or has parented a student through this period — is that it made the problems in America's schools impossible to ignore. And it also may have presented some solutions. Those persistent problems and unlikely solutions are the subject of this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, which features Washington state's superintendent of public instruction, Chris Reykdahl, and Uti Yamassee Hawkins, vice president of the Seattle Education Association, which represents the teachers in the state's largest school district. In their conversation with Crosscut news editor Donna Blankinship, which took place on May 3, 2022, as part of the Crosscut Festival, both draw on their perspectives as leaders, as well as their classroom experience, to help examine an education system at a crossroads. --- Credits Host: Mark Baumgarten Producer: Sara Bernard Event producers: Jake Newman, Andrea O'Meara Engineers: Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph --- Notes If you enjoyed this conversation, you'll want to listen to the latest season of This Changes Everything, a six-episode examination of the impact of the pandemic on public education in Washington state, told through the experiences of students, teachers and families. While many in Oregon and Washington eagerly await getting the COVID-19 vaccine, school leaders in both states are charting a course for schools to reopen even before everyone is vaccinated. The heads of public schools in Oregon and Washington believe it's critically important to get students back in class, and believe they can do it safely if health safety protocols are followed. This episode explores "Do No Harm" grading as a response to distance learning in the midst of COVID-19. Educators across the country are experiencing first hand how online distance learning exacerbates inequities in education. Students are struggling with more than access to proper technology and internet connectivity. There are inequities in supports, environments, and time constraints. On April 22nd, Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, released a video announcing its Do No Harm grading policy. The State's policy was written to ensure that students were not punished for a situation outside of their control that could impact future opportunities. The policy states that high schools will only give letter grades of A-D, no student can receive an F, and student grades cannot be negatively impacted—they can only improve. This episode explores three perspectives on grading during the COVID-19 pandemic. Monte Syrie Monte is an English teacher in Chaney, Washington.
