In this episode, Joe interviews Medical Director of the Kuya Institute for Transformational Medicine, consultant to Onnit Labs, consultant to several international treatment centers, and author of one of Joe's most referenced books, The Concussion Repair Manual, Dr. Dan Engle. Engle is quite knowledgeable when it comes to concussions and traumatic brain injuries and the brain’s ability to heal. He specializes in psychiatry, neurology, peak performance methods, and healing through regenerative and plant medicines. He talks about the sadly very different stories of his siblings, the factors that affect neurological resiliency, the need for establishing neurological performance baselines for athletes, the science behind CBD being a neuro-protectant, the safety and efficacy of psilocybin, how scaling research can dilute data, the importance of dipping one’s toes into non-ordinary states of consciousness before trying psychedelics, how we seem to have hit a new phase of learning more about preparation, and how not trying to achieve transcendence is suppressing a biological need. Engle will be opening a new center in the new year, and for now, is offering a free "Integration call" over Zoom every week at 4:30pm MST. You can learn more at fullspectrummedicine.com. Notable Quotes “It’s fascinating that, in the midst of this medical movement, we’re seeing both of these fields of medicine, in parallel, gain more and more traction- this being the psychedelic medical arena, which is more psychological-based in nature, and then you have the neurologic concussion repair arena [that's] more hardware, brain-tissue based. So you’ve got, now, software and hardware technologies in two parallel medical paths, both accelerating at the same time, with this intermediary bridge between those two fields, which is the psychedelics.” “There’s a lot of interest, there’s a huge demand, the data’s very good, and when done well, there can be a pretty significant profit margin. And so, it still comes down to: the primary focus has to be client care and client outcome, not a profit-driven model.”“When you prepare people well, for sure, you see this magnificent improvement in rates of response, recovery, whether you’re going for healing something like one of those epidemics I mentioned, or just optimization and fulfillment and the radical remembering of our awesomeness and what we’ve come to be a part of. At that point, the whole game has changed. The whole game of life just has changed from scarcity to abundance, from ‘what I have to’ to ‘what I get to,’ from the ‘me, mine and I,’ to the ‘us, the we, and the all.’ This is a shift in consciousness. It’s a shift at the level of the psyche, and psyche means soul, so this is a process where we reconnect with the deeper aspect of our inherent humanity, and no agent on the planet is as consistently predictive to support that process than psychedelics. Near-death experience can do that, but it’s not as easy to control that process.”“We’re always evolving, individually and collectively, and these psychedelic medicines, when done well- these are sparks. They’re ignitors. They’re catalysts of consciousness.” Links Drdanengle.com Fullspectrummedicine.com Concussionrepairmanual.com Revivecenters.com Spravato info Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America, by Robert Whitaker The Biology of Transcendence: A Blueprint of the Human Spirit, by Joseph Chilton Pearce About Dr. Dan Engle     Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on Facebook or iTunes Share us with your friends Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. The origin story of Revive Treatment Centers of America and how the name was chosen. (8:30) Their approach to helping patients from both a physiological and psychosomatic approach. How patients develop the mentality that they're never going to heal from their brain injury and how Revive is helping them breakthrough that idea. (10:30) What steps they take to help patients see that change isn't a bad thing and come to grips that their health is improving and it can get even better. Why we allow trauma to become our identity and how to let that idea go for good. (11:30) The fact that you can't treat everyone with the same approach; each individual will need a different treatment plan and approach.   [13:50] Resiliency For The Heart, Body, Mind, And Soul How to grow more resilient each day: heart, body, mind, and soul. Why challenges can be the push we need to become more resilient, aware, and whole human beings. How their programs are designed to help people shift from a victim mentality to a strong sense of empowerment. The science behind constitutional wiring as a foundation of understanding how a person will react to trauma. (15:00) Alan Watts How our personalities and whether we're more right or left-brained can impact our recovery from a brain injury. (19:00) Why having a good balance between the right and left brain hemispheres is important for having a strong approach to healing.   [22:50] Unpacking The Concept Of Transformational Medicine Foundational pillars of healing that have been around for thousands of years that are still just as important today for humanity. Why being human and experiencing life is such a privilege. Rumi What we can do today to be prepared and prevent any future injuries based on the foundations of good rest, nutrition, and exercise. How we can unwind, heal, and create a stronger nervous system through meditation. What we can do to uplevel our internal hardware and software systems of how we relate to ourselves, others, and life itself. How you can use your challenges as opportunities to completely shift the game and stack it in your favor.   [28:00] Healing With Revive Treatment Centers How to connect with Revive Treatment Centers and their approach to helping you. What Revive looks at in each patient including genetics, social, mental, and gut health to determine the type of care they should receive. Why Revive is pulling away from the traditional healthcare system due to differences in approach to learning, research, and insurance. The fact that it can take up to 10 years for therapeutic modalities to be approved by the traditional healthcare and insurance system. All about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) which is a great, low-invasive modality but it's only being treated in some cases and not all. (31:00) Their number one focus on helping each patient improve their quality of life.   [34:00] The Biology & Science Of Ketamine For Healing Why ketamine is so fascinating because not only does it support the healing of a lot of psychological issues but also neurological issues. 305 Anthony DiClementi What we know now about how psychedelics are helping us at the cellular level and what we don't know yet. (36:00) How healing with psychedelics and overcoming adversity can help a person improve their understanding of who they are as a person and get to states of both humility and maturity which ultimately accelerate consciousness. (37:00) The fact that not many people realize that stress is one of the most complicated factors of all disease and they don't think that it's important to learn how to manage that. You are ultimately in control of your stress and learning how to cope with it is vital towards your wellbeing. Why breathwork and meditation are two of the best- at-home tools for controlling your thoughts, stress, and life. How to care for and prevent acute altitude sickness. (44:15)   [47:40] Further Exploring Healing TBI What you can do now to personally and responsibly continue exploring how to heal TBI. Different types of concussions and why they don't just happen when you lose consciousness. Why breathwork is the most efficient way for people to reset their nervous system. Facts we should all know about concussions and their post symptoms. Common symptoms people might experience that can look like other things. How brain injuries as far back as 10 years and longer can impact you up until this very moment. What other signs you should be paying attention to post brain injury to find out if there is something more going on with your health. (52:40) Why knowledge and awareness are powerful tools to help you take action about your wellbeing rather than being stuck in a fog. M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community   Power Quotes From The Show The Launchpad Of Transformational Medicine "We're moving from this allopathic medical arena from over the last hundred years now more and more into functional medicine which is an improvement for sure but it's still fairly reductionistic. Now we're growing into this launchpad of transformational medicine which is the combination of hardware and software technologies i.e. neurology and psychology. If you take the analogy of a computer, once you uplevel the hardware and the software together, then you have the best opportunity to completely accelerate the operating system and the performance of the engagement between us and our other world." - Dr. Dan Engle   The Power Of Healing Psychologically "For the best, long-term overall success, patients not only have to heal from the physical damage that's been done and get their body back into a really strong balance of homeostasis but they also have to come to grips with their traumas psychologically to help themselves fully heal from the traumatic event that may have happened to them." - Dr. Josh Flowers   Healing The Individual Patient "Healing the brain is not about overcoming the traumas but integrating them into a more full experience of the whole human. Our traumatic events are often times are things that significantly shape us, mature us, and quicken or consciousness. If we take a more whole-person perspective, a full-spectrum process of assessment, and appreciate the fact that everybody has their own unique constitutional wiring, then we can work people through and help them work through a process of recovering and healing."  - Dr. Dan Engle   Starting To Understand How Your Mind Works "You have to start becoming aware of yourself and your own internal landscaping to realize that things are off. Step into that role, know who you are, and become comfortable with yourself because a lot of times our society tells us to not pay attention to that background chatter and what's going on but the more you come in tune with it and in control of it, the more you start to sort things out. That's where mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork are the best tools that we have within ourselves. Start diving into your own mindset and psyche to see what comes up, understanding why the brain brings it up and looking at it from a non-judgemental standpoint."  - Dr. Josh Flowers     Links From Today's Show 241 Dr. Dan Engle The Concussion Repair Manual by Dr. Dan Engle Cured Nutrition Alan Watts Rumi 305 Anthony DiClementi M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Dr. Dan Engle Facebook Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Dr. Josh Flowers Instagram LinkedIn The Revive Treatment Centers of America Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube   About Dr. Dan Engle With a background in integrative psychiatry, neurocognitive restoration, peak performance medicine and psychedelic research, Dr. Dan Engle helps individuals shift from illness and trauma to health and happiness. He was on the first episodes of my favorite leaders – Aubrey Marcus and Onnit, Tim Ferris, Calvin Banister 1. Story of his breaking of the cosmic egg at same age I did (21) and where the origins of cosmic egg comes from “Not till we are lost… do we begin to find ourselves.” – Henry David Thoreau I loved what he said about it on Adventures in Brain Injuryand, “It is a releasing of what we thought we knew and opening up to what can now be perceived with new, fresh eyes.” How can I see myself in the world differently? How can I release my programming and back into my child-like curiosity? 2. The biggest challenges are our biggest teachers. “Crisis precedes Transformation” 3. Head injuries even more so, because if the brain is off, everything else is off. Takes us into Hero’s Journey. a. The psychological and physical symptoms from concussions a. An invisible challenge. We need to own what happened and our own process. b. The current anxiety and depression we're currently going through as a society; especially for adolescents, geriatrics, and veterans. Why social media and feeling urgent all the time is leading us to feel more lonely, anxious, and depressed than ever before. What emotions we feel when we're being inauthentic and lying on social media. Why time urgency is the number one cause of stress. What revelation he had while healing from his injuries that he didn't want to live by other people's expectations and didn't want to be working in a hospital for the rest of his career. His experience from the plant medicine, Ayahuasca, and what he learned about himself from it. Why our society resorts to prescribing medication rather than looking at the core issue of a person's health problem. Why psychedelics aren't for everyone and they should be respected rather than misused. Benefits of psychedelics for those who are suitable candidates to use them to heal. Proper and regulated screening, preparation, and integration that patients would receive during treatment with psychedelics such as Psilocybin. Differences between levels 1, 2 and 3 plant medicine experiences and which ones are the most recommended for therapeutic use. Why he believes plant medicine and psychedelics are part of a sacred path for people who are candidates to participate. Why he contemplated suicide after diving so deep into plant medicine and thinking about all that was expected of him by other people. How he was in this deep Bardo phase of being in between lives and worlds have his experience with Ayahuasca. What The Satori Method is and how it helps with multi-level healing. Sensory deprivation, Vipassana, and meditation - how they can be integrated into plant medicine preparation. Why being able to practice sensory deprivation and meditation in a float tank is so beneficial and vital to being able to experience plant medicine. Why mindfulness meditation can be harmful to those with active PTSD and trauma but external guidance is better. Power Quotes From The Show "We're more digitally connected than we've ever been but we're less socially connected than we've ever been. We, as social beings who bonded for connection, are fighting a loneliness epidemic." - @drdanengle on @WellnessForce Radio episode 241 wellnessforce.com/241 "If we can't talk it through at therapy, then we rely on pharmaceuticals to manage the symptoms. Our health care is a system that's built for acute care management but it's horrible at chronic care support and core issue resolution. Psychedelic medicines are good for the core issues where psychiatry is weak. Many of the psychedelics are good for one if not all of the five core primary archetypes of psychiatric symptoms: depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction and pain." - Dr. Dan Engle "When we become clear with who we are and bring our shadow into the light, we will get to know it. This process helps us integrate our work with the healing. Plant medicines don't fix us and they're not designed to do that. This is our work to do. The medicines help us get clear with our truth and the direction of being able to actually actualize that truth via the next steps and orientation but they don't do the work for us." - Dr. Dan Engle "If we can solidify the foundation to be able to self-regulate better then when we do come up in close with our core issues and shadow material, we're more willing, ready, and able to process it, learn from it, heal it, integrate it, and become more whole." - Dr. Dan Engle   Links From Today's Show Dr. Dan Engle Facebook Instagram Twitter The Revive Treatment Centers of America Facebook Instagram Full Spectrum Medicine The Satori Method Onnit The Concussion Repair Manual California Vision 2020 Huachuma: The Forgotten Psychedelic (Full Documentary) Ayahuasca - Drink The Jungle Documentary Are Psychedelic Drugs the Next Medical Breakthrough? #9: Dr. Dan Engle Reframing the Western Medical Paradigm

With a background in psychiatric medicine, neurology, advanced ayahuasca dietas, psychedelic integration, and neurocognitive restoration, Dr. Dan Engle is one of the most unique and important voices in the psychedelic movement today. As founder of Full Spectrum Medicine and author of the new book The Concussion Repair Manual, Dr. Dan brings together a deep understanding of both the medical world and the psychedelic experience with an eye toward therapeutic personal transformation. Psychedelic Times founder Joe Mattia spoke with Dr. Dan recently at a mutual friend’s float studio, and their conversation ranges from Dan’s fascinating personal story of ayahuasca dietas in the jungle to his return to the Western world to advance the cause of integrative, soul-centered healing.   Sponsors: Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third- generation master soapmaker. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realize our unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” Still family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner’s honors its founder’s vision by continuing to make socially & environmentally responsible products, and by dedicating our profits to help make a better world.   The Temple of the Way of Light is an ayahuasca center in Peru that opened in 2007. Their team of indigenous Shipibo healers represents over 250 years of experience practicing the ancient art of ayahuasca shamanism. The healers are supported by highly trained and experienced Western facilitators, who act as a critical cultural bridge between the healers and guests. The Temple was founded on the philosophy that an atmosphere of genuine care and compassion provides the optimum conditions for healing. Show Notes: The grassroots psychedelic movement [9:00] The powerful data from psychedelic research [12:00] The broken medical system [14:00] Psychiatry [15:00] Sustainability [8:00] Finding your truth [18:00] Ayahuasca and dietas in the jungle [20:30] Returning to civilization [26:30] Being an emissary from the forest [29:30] Full Spectrum Medicine [30:00] Western allopathic medicine [32:20] Pharmaceuticals [34:30] Detoxification and healing [37:30] Ibogaine addiction treatment [43:00] Drug policy and ibogaine experiences [50:00] Exploring the shadow [54:00] Being True to You [55:50] Preparation and integration [58:00] That place inbetween worlds [61:00] Kambo [62:00] Selected Quotes: On balancing vision and action: “It can be easy, particularly in the medicine space, to have the grand vision and to see the meta view, but it’s just as important- if not more important- to actualize that and move it into this 3-dimensional reality in the most effective way.” On returning to civilization after intense ayahuasca dietas: “I had married the medicine path so to speak, and I didn't have much of a desire or interest to come back to this way we collectively live in the West. But then I realized that if I was to be of support and a positive impact to the greatest degree that I could be, then it was probably not going to be just hanging out solo in the jungle. It was going to be coming back to potentially be a voice to bridge the psychedelic medicine community with the psychiatric medical community. If we do choose to see the right place that psychedelic medicines have in the unfolding potential of health care moving forward, then it’s helpful to have people who can speak from both perspectives.” On jungle medicine: “When we know that the pharmacy of the entire jungle itself, and the river system itself, with the soil and the animals and the plants and the fish and everything is this buffet of potential options for someone’s healing protocol, then all of these things are used synergistically.” On Deanne Adamson’s program Being True to You: “The program that Deanne has created with Being True to You does turn the whole addiction frame on its head. It encourages a shift from the victim role into an empowerment role. To be able to say “Ok, this experience that I’m going through is my journey towards personal development and towards a more whole, integrated self.” Some people choose the doorway of depression, some people choose the doorway of chronic anxiety, some people choose the doorway of chronic pain… we all have our own hero’s journey that we’re going through. And it is a liberating frame to be able to try on… all of a sudden, now it puts us in the driver’s seat.”

And even if you haven't had a concussion, many people - due to brain inflammation, blood-brain barrier leakage, neurotransmitter imbalances and beyond - suffer from many of the same problematic brain issues caused by a concussion, such as brain fog, distraction, and ADHD-like symptoms (you can check out my own story about that, and how I fixed it, in ). As more and more high profile athletes come forward to share their stories of invisible suffering after head injuries, we as a culture are finally acknowledging this silent epidemic.
