Groups of kids received 2 doses of the Moderna Bivalent vaccine and 3 doses of the Pfizer bivalent vaccine.  Yes there were children who developed non-cardiac events including isolated seizures, but the relative risks of experiencing these were not elevated.   Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/odP-sDjsFqk   With CoVid infections raging, the percentage of Americans who have received a complete series of CoVid vaccinations as well as the updated bivalent Omicron booster is nothing short of disgracefully low.  CoVid cases are up 55% in New York City, 127% in LA, 139% in Atlanta, 59% in DC, 54% in Miami, 92% in Houston, 73% in Chicago, and 121% in Los Vegas.   Only 71% of  men and 66% of women have finished their 2 shot initial CoVid vaccination series and a dismal 15% of men and 12% of women have receive the updated Omicron booster.  Even worse, only 5% of young children and 32% of older children have been vaccinated and only 3% of young children and 5% of older children have received the Omicron booster.   Are we doing any better with the flu?  Not really.  The flu season is well underway, and everyone should have already gotten the flu jab.  To date, though, only 26% of adults and 43% of children have had the flu vaccine.  That's slight better than this time last year but not good enough.   We currently have a tridemic raging: CoVid, Flu, and RSV.  The good news is that we have vaccines to help control CoVid and Influenza.  An RSV vaccine is on the way, but not just yet.  For the two diseases for which we do have vaccines, the vaccination rates should be closer to 100%.   What is wrong with us?  These vaccines are like any other medicine.  If you have a strep throat, would you refuse to take penicillin or another antibiotic.  If you have diabetes, would you refuse insulin.   If you're constipated, would you skip Ex-Lax.   Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/zykNllfsRmw   With the continuing invasion of new and more menacing CoVid Omicron subvariants, the CDC now gives us the sobering statistics about the current effectiveness of the first generation, so-called monovalent vaccination shots and boosters.  Using electronic medical record data from 21 hospitals in 18 states over the first 8 months of 2022, the study reports the protection afforded by 2 immunizing doses and 1 or 2 booster doses of the vaccine for some 4730 adult patients.   During the early Omicron period with BA1/2 predominant, the overall vaccine effectiveness was 69%.  During the more recent BA4/5 era, the overall vaccine effectiveness dropped to 31%.  The vaccine effectiveness against BA4/5 also falls sharply over 3.5 months following the last shot.  For 2 shots and a booster, it dropped from 60% to 29%.  For 2 shots and 2 boosters, the effectiveness was only 61% after the 3 months.  And these rather abysmal statistics were gathered even before the latest and most aggressiveness subvariants BQ1.1 and XBB.   What does this all mean for you?  It means that if you expect to escape a nasty and maybe lethal case of CoVid as well as spreading it to those you love, you'd better be getting another booster if its been 4 months since your last shot.  The booster you should be getting is the new bivalent Omicron-specific booster that promises the optimal protection and its available for all those 5 years and older.   https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7142a3.htm   #omicron #CoVid #vaccine #booster #BA1/2 #BA4/5 #BQ1.1

  Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/5ZPn2thh3yw   The CoVid Omicron booster that Moderna will release in the fall, called mRNA1273.214, is a bivalent shot containing mRNA that triggers production of antigen from the original CoVid and antigen from the B1.1.529 Omicron sub variant.  This from data the company has submitted to the FDA for an EUA to cover use in those 12 years and older.   A 4th dose using this booster led to more than a 6 fold increase in Ba.4/BA.5 neutralizing antibodies in those without a CoVid infection history and more than a 3 fold rise in protective antibodies for those previously infected.   The local and and systemic reactions to the booster were slightly less severe and frequent than those to a 3rd dose of the original Moderna vaccine.   As I'm recording this broadcast today, August 31st, the FDA has just approved this booster.  The CDC will be making a final decision tomorrow.   https://www.fda.gov/media/159492/download   #moderna #CoVid #vaccine #booster #omicron #b5

  Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/dvEKkhoQd4I   Just as CoVid Omicron cases seem to be declining in the US, the latest Omicron subvariants, particularly BA.5, have been sweeping across the world and now rising in the United States.   The Omicron subvariants BA.4 and  BA.5 were first noted in South Africa early in the spring.  In May, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control declared these Omicron mutants variants of concern.   BA.5 has a 12 to 13% growth advantage over even BA.2, and by May was already responsible for 37% of cases in Portugal but few in the US..  Now, BA.5 is responsible for 37% of cases in the US.   Be aware too that a previous case of Omicron is no protection against becoming infected with Omicron BA.5.  CoVid vaccination and boosting after 3 months or more following your last shot offers only minimal protection against infection with BA.5 but does protect against a severe or deadly case of it.   The bottom line: CoVid is far from over so buckle up.  As we head into the summer, we need to return to more stringent precautions including masking indoors and in crowds using N95 masks, maintaining appropriate distancing, staying out of crowds, and avoiding indoor dining except in well-controlled bubbles.   https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2022/05/ecdc-ups-ba4-ba5-variants-concern-warns-case-rises   #CoVid #omicron #BA5 #vaccination #boosters

  Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/jUgc6YPWkrE   Your chance of developing LongCovid is about 21% greater after an Omicron BA.2 infection compared with a Delta infection.  The UK's Office for National Statistics surveyed 6631 persons infected with either the CoVid Delta variant or one of the Omicron subvariants after 3 shots of either the Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZenaca CoVid vaccines.  The survey asked participants if they experienced any symptoms of LongCovid from 4 to 8 weeks after their infections.  If so, did their LongCovid symptoms interfere with their daily activities.   When the numbers were crunched, the incidence of LongCovid for the triple vaccinated was about 8 to over 9%.  Unlike the situation for Delta, the addition of the 3rd shot did not measurably decrease the LongCovid incidence after the Omicron subvariants.   In general, the incidence of any LongCovid trended higher after Omicron BA.2 than after either Omicron BA.1 or Delta.  The incidence of activity-limiting LongCovid was no higher after BA.2 than after BA.1.   Bottom line: the organ-rotting effects of LongCovid do occur in up to 1 in every 11 persons infected with the current CoVid Omicron subvariants.   https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/selfreportedlongcovidafterinfectionwiththeomicronvariant/6may2022   #CoVid #longCovid #vaccination #boosting

Omicron cases have surged among Māori, with tangata whenua now having the highest rates. As another pandemic inequity emerges, the health ministry is again defending its response for Māori. Jamie Tahana reports.

  Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/ILJxdVWBzTQ   A home rapid antigen CoVid test on day 6 of a quarantine overestimates the risk that you are still infectious by some 40%.  This from a Boston-based study run by researchers from Harvard, MIT, and Boston  University.   Forty young CoVid-vaccinated and 90% boosted young adults, mean age 32 years, were studied after testing PCR-positive for CoVid Omicron.  All underwent both rapid antigen testing and viral culture testing on day 6 of their quarantine.  The rapid antigen test on that day declared that 75% of the group remained positive.  However, the viral cultures indicated that only 35% were continuing to carry live, transmissible virus.   The investigators conclude that a negative rapid antigen test on day 6 should be the signal to end the quarantine.  If your rapid antigen test is positive, there is a good chance that you aren't actually caring live virus.  However, only a negative viral culture or PCR test will permit you to end your isolation at that time.  If you don't have that, continuing the quarantine an additional 5 days would be necessary ending it after that time if you're asymptomatic.   https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.03.03.22271766v1.full.pdf+html   #CoVid #quarantine #rapidantigentest #viralculture #pcr

  Vidcast: https://youtu.be/7j84pgTYVJs   If you want to avoid a CoVid hospitalization or worse, you'd better be vaccinated and boosted.  The latest evidence released by the CDC provides graphic evidence about the vaccine effectiveness of the mRNA vaccines.      The data on a total of 55,552 persons gathered during the Omicron-predominant period was gathered from 10 sites across the country.  The analysis determined the ability of two or three doses of the nRNA vaccines to prevent hospitalizations for CoVid Omicron at various intervals after completion of the 2 dose vaccination regimen and the 3 dose vaccination + booster regimen.   This graphic data representation shows that the 2 dose vaccination, at best, only prevents 71% of hospitalizations, and that protection declines to only 54% by 5 months after the second shot.  If, at that point, an individual receives a booster, the protective vaccine effectiveness jumps up 37% to 91%.  Though the protection continues to decline during the months following the 3rd shot booster, it does so at a level 35 to 37% higher than after 2 shots alone.   The other takeaway from these numbers is that, in this age of Omicron, the default CoVid vaccine regimen should be 3 shots from the outset.  That way, the initial protection from hospitalization would be over 90% and protection over time should be over 35% better.   https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7107e2.htm   #covid #vaccination #omicron #booster #vaccine-effectiveness  

  Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/8cJd70mUAOY   A 4th dose of Pfizer mRNA vaccine for those 60 years or older reduces the chances of a serious or severe Covid infection threefold and offers twofold protection against any CoVid Omicron infection.  Israel's health ministry announces these preliminary results of their study comparing the fate of 400,000 Israeli's who received 4 Pfizer doses with 600,000 who received the two vaccinating doses and one booster.  They have not published or released more in-depth data as yet.   The trial of a 4th Pfizer dose began in December of 2021 by inoculating 150 medical staffers, and the trial was subsequently expanded.  The researchers state that the second booster appears most useful for older persons and those with complicating medical conditions such as immunosuppression following transplantation or cancer chemotherapy.   Stay tuned for more updates on this.  Suffice it to say, the CDC is watching this and should be considering an optional second booster for older persons and those with medical issues.   https://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-trial-worlds-first-finds-4th-dose-not-good-enough-against-omicron/   #CoVid #booster #pfizer #immunosuppression #age

  Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/wuj8VZo_4Ac   Ramping up America's current rather dismal CoVid booster vaccination rate could prevent more than half a million hospitalizations and save at least 70,000 lives.  The CDC reports that, as of last week, only 47% of booster-eligible Americans have received the shot that will offer significant Omicron protection.  The rate of booster vaccination nationwide is only 750,000 persons per day.  Adding the booster to a 2 dose Pfizer vaccination regimen more than doubles the protection against symptomatic Omicron infection and is 90% effective in preventing the need for hospitalization.    Public health specialists at Yale, Toronto's York University, and the University of Maryland issue this challenge after creating computer models to project the impact of CoVid Omicron's spread.  Using historical data, a mathematical model predicts that doubling the rate of booster administration to 1.5 million doses/day would prevent 401,897 CoVid hospitalizations and 48,358 deaths.  Tripling the rate of boosting to 2.3 million doses/day would prevent 619,133 hospitalizations and save 70,603 lives.   It is possible to achieve this life-saving level of CoVid boosting since the initial  CoVid vaccination rate was over 2 million shots per day.   https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.01.22.22269655v1.full.pdf+html https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/covidview/index.html   #CoVid #vaccination #booster #hospitalization #death

The United States' first confirmed case of the Covid Omicron variant has been identified in California. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the person was fully vaccinated and has “mild symptoms.” CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta tells Anderson Cooper how soon we could see community spread. Plus, the 15-year-old boy accused of killing four students in an Oxford, Michigan school was charged as an adult with four counts of first-degree murder and terrorism.
