We're back! It's been a hot minute, the summer was crazier than we expected and our schedules just didn't jive to record. Today we have a good old fashioned ghost story, because who doesn't like a haunting? Also, if you didn't have anxiety before, you may have it after learning you might all of a sudden burst into flames. Our throwbacks are many....BodyBreak, Snackwells cookies, 90s talk shows, Bob Barker, and Jimmy Buffet. Apparently we're making up for those missing weeks. We made it to the end of the series on why you binge and how to stop. Here is a quick recap if you are tuning in. In my years working with people on binge eating and body trust, I have noticed eight primary reasons why people binge. I covered those reasons in episode 2 of the podcast. Each reason has a corresponding solution, and I outlined the eight solutions in episode 3.Over the last seven episodes, we have been diving deep into each solution to stop binge eating. Each episode stands alone, but they all work powerfully together. That brings us to today - the 8th and final solution. The #8 reason why people binge is your personal narrative. What does that mean? It's your internal dialogue. The way you speak to yourself inside your own head. Your internal dialogue is powerful. It's like the radio station that plays in your head, with certain songs on repeat.Pay attention. Notice what radio station you are listening to. You have to become aware of it first. You can change your internal dialogue, which is essential to ending binge eating. Then realize you get to choose which radio station you want.Tune in to learn more about what this looks like and how to change the internal dialogue. To recap this series, the 8 solutions to end binge eating are:Understand why you started and why you haven't stopped yetRemove restrictionsLearn how to work with your nervous systemLearn how to connect with your bodyExpand your emotional capacityDevelop two-way trust with your bodyBreak the habitChange the internal narrativeWhen you apply all of these solutions to your life, you will create an entirely new relationship with yourself and with food. If you want help with this, I'd love to be your guide.Thank you for listening to Binge Breakthrough. Coach Carey Nelson's notable achievements are vast, but you would never know it. A humble runner and coach, Coach Carey has been running for over 44 years, and just completed his 6th world marathon major in Berlin. This accomplishment is just one of many, which include winning the Houston Marathon with a time of 2:12 in 1991, and qualifying for the Olympics 3 times, competing in the 5000m distance in Seoul Korea in 1988, and in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics for the marathon distance (Coach Carey had to withdraw from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona due to injury). This is all before the era of Strava, smart watches, gels, and fancy carbon plated shoes. In fact, it was a shoeless runner who inspired Coach Carey at the age of 14, and from that day on, Coach Carey knew he wanted to compete in the Olympics one day. Regardless of the long list of accomplishments, I think all runners will relate to Coach Carey's experience with injury, his passion for running as life long sport, and how something amazing can start with a big dream. On a related note: How many of you guys remember Body Break and ParticipAction with Hal Johnson and Joanne Mcleod? They are Canadian Icons who inspired me growing up, and funny how Coach Carey was inspired by them, too. I hope you enjoy this episode. If you want to reach Coach Carey, you can email him at carey.nelson@forerunners.ca . (or find him at the Main Street Forerunners!).

Since 1988, Hal Johnson has been encouraging Canadians to lead a healthy and active lifestyle under the umbrella of BodyBreak. Anybody who grew up watching television in the 80s and 90s would be familiar with both Johnson and his wife, Joanne McLeod. They recorded over 300 90-second episodes of BodyBreak. The show focuses on how exercise can be incorporated into daily life. The program was conceived by McLeod and Johnson after meeting in a gym. It was designed to be different than other fitness shows of the era: friendly, representing the sexes equally, and showing both racial and physical diversity, a result of Johnson's experiences of racism, which helped push him to create BodyBreak as a countermeasure. Johnson is a serial entrepreneur conducting speaking engagements and has their name on many different product endorsements including a recently launched branded clothing line. He shares some sage advice including the importance of time and taking advantage of it while you can. Although you can't see it by listening to the podcast, you really are able to experience Johnson's gigantic smile and positive energy and attitude.

Hal Johnson & Joanne McLeod aka 80s/90s sensation BodyBreak! The Canadian television hosts are both former international-level athletes. Hal with baseball, and Joanne as a hurdler. Since 1988, they produced over 300 short episodes of BodyBreak as well as a single season television series. They expanded the program into speaking engagements, fitness equipment, and other products. As a mixed-race couple, they have faced their share of racism, and sought to be inclusive when casting for their BodyBreak episodes. In 2013, Hal & Jo participated in the first season of The Amazing Race Canada (TARC)! This is how WE became connected with them. After our season of TARC aired in 2016, Hal & Jo reached out to us, took us out for breakfast, and they haven't been able to shake us since! In 2016, they received the Governor General's Meritorious Service Medal for positively impacting the health of Canadians. They have an impressive list of guest appearances. Some fun ones include… being grand marshals of the 2013 Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Parade, being guest “anchors” on the news comedy program This Hour Has 22 Minutes, doing a parody of themselves for the Netflix Series Santa Clarita Diet, and creating a COVID-19 physical distancing segment for the Vancouver International Airport. In this episode, we delve into Hal & Joanne's past athletic careers, BodyBreak, and—of COURSE—the Amazing Race Canada. We'd love to learn more about their love story and experience with racism, so they'll just have to be guests again. Thanks Hal & Jo! https://bodybreak.com/

The human body is capable of incredible things. We’re equipped with something unique: the drive and mental power to achieve physical feats far beyond the things we need to do to survive. Take Ross Edgley; the first man to circumnavigate Great Britain in water. Swimming. With nothing but sheer strength, determination, and a wetsuit. Edgley’s 157 day swim left him shattered, with a rotting tongue and 37 jellyfish stings. Why did he do it? To push himself to his limits, and to inspire other people to get out of their comfort zone. He said “find something that you didn’t think you were capable of and prove yourself wrong.” Although not all of us will swim 1,791 miles in cold and hostile water, getting out there and changing your perception of what you can and can’t do might just change your life.

Persistence. Hal Johnson has it. Back in 1988, when he and Joanne McLeod, teamed up to create a series of 90-second televised public service announcements called Body Break to inspire Canadian audiences to “keep fit and have fun,” it wasn't embraced right away. In fact, Hal shopped the idea to various places but was turned down repeatedly including by one television network representative who told Hal he didn't feel Canada was ready to see a biracial couple on screen (Hal is half-black while Joanne is white). Others would have been angry, but Hal just used this challenge as motivation. Let's just say, due to his focus and sheer determination, he'd help Body Break become an iconic fixture on TV sets across the country. During this inspiring interview, you'll learn... The importance of taking the positives from rejection to find creative solutions Why you should do investigative work to uncover potential opportunities no one else sees Why it's an absolute must to look for ways to fill a need for people To find out more about Hal and his work with Body Break, visit https://www.thebusinessofthoughtleadership.com.
Hal Johnson from Body Break came on to discuss how Body Break came to be, The Santa Clarita Diet Netflix Promo and how social media is impacting health and fitness.
