On August 13, 2021, the second largest public school district in the United States -- the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) -- ordered all employees to be “fully vaccinated” against covid-19 by October 15, 2021. Employees who did not consent were considered a threat to public health and to the lives of children. These employees were stripped over their medical privacy, put under duress and subjected to weekly medical testing requirements that were coercive and discriminatory in nature and based on medical fraud. The LAUSD enrolls nearly 575,000 students annually and employs around 38,300 staff. Over the course of LAUSD's unlawful covid-19 vaccine mandate, the district wrongfully terminated around 500 employees and forced another 500 employees into unpaid leave or early retirement.

In this episode we go to Los Angeles, where school staff are striking and schools are shut down. The Service Employees International Union, Local 99, which represents about 30,000 teachers' aides, special education assistants, bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, special education assistants and other support staff, walked out amid stalled contract talks on Tuesday, March 21st, for a 3-day strike. SEIU Local 99 members voted overwhelmingly (96% in favor) to authorize a strike last month. During the strike vote and contract bargaining process, the district subjected workers to surveillance, intimidation, and harassment. LA's teachers' union has joined the labor action, refusing to cross their colleagues' picket line, essentially leaving the second-largest school district in the US closed for business until the strike is over. We're joined by Bryant Odega, a substitute teacher at the HArts academy, housed in Narbonne High School – a school in the LA Unified School District. Bryant is a member of the LA teachers' union (United Teachers of LA or UTLA). He joins us from the picket line outside his workplace. Staying on theme, we move back to Oakland, where contract negotiations between the teachers union and the district went from a double-digit raise down to a 3.5% raise, and even that low number's funding would come from cuts to other staff, like SEIU and AFSCME classified staff who do things like special ed support, and food prep. On Friday, March 24th, school workers and teachers are planning a walkout as a wildcat strike action. We're joined by one of the teachers impacted – Marika Iyer is an English and Ethnic Studies Teacher at Oakland High School. —- Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post LA School Staff on Strike while Oakland Teachers Plan a Wildcat Strike Action appeared first on KPFA.

The Los Angeles Unified School District's Office of Human Relations, Equity, and Diversity hosted a 10-week online club for LGBTQ elementary school students, dubbed the “Rainbow Club.” The group promoted “two-spirit sexuality” and taught intricate details of gender reassignment surgery to kids as young as 4 years old. It's never too early to start indoctrinating children. A recently published Rolling Stone article says Gen Z kids are becoming furries at a rapid pace. Unlike in many other parts of America, Los Angeles isn’t debating whether or not to send students back into physical classrooms. In the time since it was announced that the L.A. Unified School District would be fully-remote through at least the end of 2020, it’s become a stand-bearer on the remote-learning front. L.A. Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner joins Dan to discuss why he made the remote decision, how he distributed devices to students, his vision for contact tracing, and what he thinks about President Trump's funding cut threat.

In this 37-minute episode, Michael Dear, author of Why Walls won't Work, takes us through the evolution of the US-Mexico border from quaint and lacklustre demarcations to its current full-fledged military industrialisation. Michael talks about the rise of borderland mentalities (min. 4) slowly etched into those living in that region, the intertwined economies along the border (min. 10), its militarisation after 9/11 (min. 11), just how ineffective walls are (min. 17) and the “portfolio” of options. We then continue discussing not only the supply of drugs, but the slow change in US government thinking that indeed there is a demand challenge (min. 23). As part of the LA School in urban planning, Michael shares his views about the 2024 LA Olympics (min. 26), the city's challenges around traffic (min. 28), but also that given all of those, it still works relatively well. He closes up with his favourite places in the Golden State (min. 35). Feed you soul. Keep listening.

Court testimony from an “expert” hired by the Los Angeles School District, argued that a 9-year-old who was sexually assaulted at school didn’t experience any trauma from the event because she had a low IQ. Really! Does anyone really believe that? Well, apparently some do. What other misconceptions exist that minimize the damage done by trauma to people who are different from our ideal? Can you imagine being a little girl who endured a horrible assault and then being told and treated as if it were no big deal? Well, we’re going to explore that topic and more with Brian D. Tallant, L.P.C., N.C.C. Brian is a Program Director at Aurora Mental Health in Colorado and manages Intercept Center; a mental health outpatient and day treatment program for children who have a dual diagnosis of developmental disability and co-occurring mental health disorders. He works with a number of disabled children who have experienced trauma of all sorts. Join us Saturday at 11 am Pacific Time to learn more about childhood trauma and disabled children, and find out if the “expert” from the school district in LA is right or wrong as can be. Call-in with your comments to (646) 378-0430.
