Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by offering up his word of the day, ‘whining,' telling of an interview that Gisele Fetterman gave KDKA about a recent interview her husband gave to NBC, which prompted a conversation about the candidates health. Fetterman calls for some training for NBC staffers after the incident, which annoys Dom, because he finds Fetterman's health to be pertinent for voters, allowing them to decide whether he'll be able to make decisions while serving in Washington, D.C. Then, Dom announces the side question of the day, asking listeners to give them something or somebody related to Russia, tying it to the anniversary of Alaska joining the United States. After that, Dom tells that longtime Philadelphia food critic Craig LaBan has announced that he'll stop rating restaurants with his Liberty Bell rating system, telling that Coronavirus has created such a dynamic environment in restaurants giving customers different experiences based on staffing and supply shortages. Then, Dom welcomes legendary Philadelphia sports analyst Ray Didinger back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss the fantastic camaraderie centered on Philadelphia sports. First, though, Dom asks Ray about a new racehorse powering its way through the racing ranks named ‘Didinger,' with Ray revealing a huge win by multiple lengths at the Parx Racetrack yesterday. Then, Dom and Didinger jump into a discussion about the miraculous Philadelphia Phillies run in the MLB postseason, explaining what he believes has led to the success we're seeing, and predicting what to expect moving forward as the team takes on the Padres and hopefully look to the future. Also, Didinger comments on the Eagles success as they continue with their undefeated season, telling what to expect out of the team after they return from their bye week next week. In part one of our two part season finale, we talk with Craig LaBan, restaurant critic for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Just in time for the Jewish High Holidays, Rodeph Shalom synagogue is selling "Holy Honey." KYW Newsradio's Hadas Kuznits chats with Philadelphia Inquirer food critic Craig LaBan and his son Arthur LaBan, who first started a hive on the roof of the synagogue five years ago for Arthur's bar-mitzvah project. The younger LaBan has since expanded his love of bees and started a club at his new school. Listen to them chat about bees, the ecosystem and what happens to the hive with LaBan getting ready to leave the area for college.
Craig has been a food critic for over 20 years now. And in my opinion one of the most influential persons within Philadelphia. I have been reading Craig’s work for years and I’m so happy to have him on the show. For me, this interview has been a dream come true. To those of you who have been listening for a while now, you’ll know how much I love food and hospitality. Although this conversation in particular is mostly about food, there are some underline themes for you to listen to that relate to business. As I was collecting my notes on Craig I realized that there isn’t much to go off of because he’s an incredibly private person. You won’t be able to google him and even when you do you see is works of art. You won’t be able to find his face and that’s for a reason of course, so I’m not going to lie…all I had to go off of was from reading his articles over the years. Craig has written hundreds and and thousands of articles about food. I’ve salivated while reading to about 76% of them. He’s created a Philly Dining Guide that highlights what you need to eat when you come to Philly, his reviews are world renowned where restaurants wish for the best possible review from Craig. Some of the highlights of this episode for me were when he defined two key words that are near and dear to my heart and should be to yours. Food and Hospitality. The definition of Food is about mid way through the episode and Hospitality is defined at the very end of the conversation. Regardless of where you’re from, you’ll still be able to learn a ton from this conversation. Although I must admit this is a selfish interview, you’ll takeaway a brief history of Philadelphia cuisine and a unique perspective of what makes small businesses succeed and finding your own voice.
