Former TCM Underground chief programmer Millie De Chirico joins us to talk about her book, "TCM Underground: 50 Must-See Films from the World of Classic Cult and Late-Night Cinema." She also helps us get through our TCM Underground withdrawals that we've all been going through since Turner Classic Movies cancelled the Friday night cult movie cavalcade in February. First, Millie and the OMFYS crew discuss a trio of way underground short films from Curtis Harrington and Kenneth Anger (RIP): THE WORMWOOD STAR (1956), INAUGURATION OF THE PLEASURE DOME (1956), and INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969). Millie and Cory shed a lot of light on the occult art scene of 1950s Los Angeles, and one of its central figures, the bewitching (maybe literally!) Marjorie Cameron, and Philena's "TikTok Report" shows us that people are still very afraid of these movies, which is a good thing. Curtis Harrington, who directed WORMWOOD STAR and stars in PLEASURE DOME, sticks around for our feature, his haunting zero-budget horror film, NIGHT TIDE (1961). Dennis Hopper plays a sailor drawn to a sideshow mermaid (Lindy Lawson) who might just be the real thing. Marjorie Cameron also appears as The Water Witch plus bongos by Chaino. There is a big SPOILER WARNING! on this one because we DESTROY THE ENDING. We usually edit this stuff out but the spoilery bits may help people understand NIGHT TIDE and the conversation is just too fun to end up on the virtual editing room floor. At least Bob thinks so, and he's usually the spoiler police. If you haven't seen NIGHT SIDE stop listening at the 1:13 mark of this episode and skip ahead to the weed recs four minutes later (1:17). Both of our featured filmmakers, Kenneth Anger and Curtis Harrington, are LGBTQ+, so please consider this our ACCIDENTAL PRIDE EPISODE. Love is love. Ask for Millie De Chico's TCM UNDERGROUND book at your local bookstore or succumb to the corporate octopus and order it online from you know where, or maybe this somewhat more benign corporate bookseller. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/tcm-underground-millie-de-chirico/1141004302 Also, check out Millie's excellent film podcast, I SAW WHAT YOU DID. If you like this podcast, you should definitely subscribe to hers. The PhilenApocalypse as foretold by prophecy is finally upon us! Philena Franklin has taken over OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS and has transformed it in NEW MOVIES FOR OLD STONERS! Both movies are in color and both have synchronized sound! No silents! No subtitles! One of these movies is even from THIS CENTURY!!! Can OMFYS survive this brush with modernity??? Listen and find out! First, Philena shows us what it was like to grow up in the Franklin household with MIDNIGHT MADNESS (1980), a movie she claims her dad, OMFYS co-host Greg Franklin, made her watch repeatedly during her formative years. David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON), Eddie Deezen (GREASE), Maggie Roswell (THE SIMPSONS), and Stephen Furst (ANIMAL HOUSE) star in this wacky scavenger hunt comedy produced by Disney (although you wouldn't know it from the opening credits). The Mouse kept their name off of this one. It's also Michael J. Fox's first film, which probably helped the studio recoup their losses from it on the home video market once Family Ties hit. Then, Philena takes us to 2013--just 10 years ago!--for WARM BODIES, a zombified retelling of Romeo and Juliet with Nicholas Hoult from RENFIELD as a rotting zombie searching who finds true love, and John Malkovich in the Lord Capulet role. I'd wanna say it's the first movie featured on OMFYS with CGI effects, but there might've been some video toaster action going on in LOST HIGHWAY (1997) from our "In Cold Bud" episode. We also talk about the WGA strike and what musical artists are torturing the poor, starving writers on the picket line. Hope you enjoy all the newness but we promise to get back to black and white with our next episode where we will be joined by longtime TCM Underground programmer Millie De Chirico for Curtis Harrington's NIGHT TIDE (1961) with Dennis Hopper + Kenneth Anger's (RIP) occult short, INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969). BECAUSE HORROR is a collection of 13 essays (incl. one poem) that mixes critical writing and memoir to explore horror movies and how they haunt memory. Bringing the glee of fandom into cinema scholarship, BECAUSE HORROR promiscuously sways through titles like MESSIAH OF EVIL, PULSE, MANDY, DANTE'S COVE and SCRE4M, with prose that spreads sticky like louche gore over the history of a genre and its mutating sites of broadcast.    Written between August 1 and September 14, 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, the chapbook was an exercise in immediacy and a breakneck volley of ideas between Huston and Nordeen who live in San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively. Huston’s chapters span The Brain that Wouldn’t Die, Tourist Trap, Curtis Harrington’s The Killing Kind, Mandy, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Kairo (Pulse) and its TIFF premiere on September 10 of 2001, and a survey of films that lead with the directive, Don’t… Nordeen’s essays broach Deathdream, Blood Diner, Play It As It Lays vs. Messiah of Evil, horror movie posters in the video rental market of the 1990s, what Scre4m looks like on ketamine and an original poem inspired by the gay supernatural soap opera Dante’s Cove. The chapbook features original artwork by Hedi El Kholti, who also penned an afterward, concerning hotel horror. Still lives by Abdi Taslimi. For over a decade, Johnny Ray Huston was Arts and Entertainment Editor at the San Francisco Bay Guardian. As a writer, artist and curator he has read or shown work at venues including SFMOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF Camerawork, Artists’ Television Access and [2nd Floor Projects]. A book of stories, published by Straight to Hell, is due in 2021.   Bradford Nordeen is a writer, curator and founder of the non-profit organization, Dirty Looks Inc. In der ersten diesjährigen GRUSELFOLGE der Untersicht sprechen Marius von This Move Makes Me Drink und ich über einen ungewöhnlichen Film.

On this edition of Parallax Views, just in time for Halloween, film critic, filmmaker, and musical composer Chris Alexander of Delirium Magazine joins the show to discuss the joys of horror cinema. We begin by discussing how Chris became interested in horror before delving into other areas, particularly the socially subversive potentials of horror. In this regard we discuss Chris's article on the blaxploitation cult classic Blacula as well as his friendship with George A. Romero and how Romero's "Living Dead" trilogy (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead) contain scathing social commentary and satire.   In addition we discuss the wild films of Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper, the Euro-Horror of Jess Franco and Jean Rollins, the cinematic universe of David Cronenberg and the horrific themes that tie his early film in with his later work, Chris's take on the slasher genre and excitement over the newest entry in the Halloween franchise, the way film critics often unfairly overlook the horror genre, and finding horror in unlikely places like the films of Orson Welles and Werner Herzog. Jess Franco's The Awful Dr. Orloff Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce, a major influence on Chris's own films And, of course, we discuss Chris's own filmmaking efforts starting with Blood for Irina, Queen of Blood, and, most recently, Space Vampire. Chris explains the influence of directors like Werner Herzog and Curtis Harrington on these films , their themes, and the highly experimental approach, which included an early use of filming on an iPhone, he took in making them. It's a perfect episode for the Halloween season that'll be followed by a few other Parallax Views Halloween specials in the coming days! On this episode of DINNER WITH LYNCH podcast, we discuss the immensely interesting and often overlooked film director Curtis Harrington John Cribbs of 'The Pink Smoke' Mr. Harrington has connections with a virtual whos-who of hollywood's most notorious outsiders, and is a champion underappreciated actors and creators that were so often discarded by the Hollywood elite and the cold-hearted studio system. From his mentor Josef Von Sternberg, to his friendships with James Whale and Kenneth Anger, Curtis Harrington truly was the most interesting guy in Hollywood. We explore his life and work as well as the one film that might be considered a masterpiece, his 1961 film 'Night Tide' starring a young Dennis Hopper and with a rare cameo from the notorious Occult figure Marjorie Cameron. We also talk about another favorite, 'The Killing Kind' from 1973 starring a young John Savage, Cindy Williams and the unforgettable Ann Sothern. As usual, I have provided film clips, trailers, interviews and docs for you to check out before or after you listen to the podcast. I have also posted filmography info. Some info on our Guest: John Cribbs is part of the brilliant team behind ‘The Pink Smoke’ Movie Website. The Pink Smoke site is a resource for tons of movie info, as well as some incredible long form film insight and review. Here are a few links to help you stay connected to John, his team, podcasts and website. Pure Cinema Pod is their partner podcast, John also does a Patreon podcast with Christopher Funderburg, also of  The Pink Smoke. I proudly support (with a truly modest amount) The Pink Smoke Patreon. They have a unique approach with their Patreon... the purpose is to support the efforts of contributing writers by actually paying them a fair fee for their contributions... I think that is pretty great and a concept that I hope catches on.
