Kirsten Dunst started in the acting business when she was just three years old - you may know her from films such as Marie Antoinette, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Virgin Suicides and Spiderman. She joins Emma to talk about her latest film - The Power of the Dog - written and directed by the award winning Jane Campion. Is there a 'laddish' culture within the British Armed forces? And is it necessary in order to prepare – mainly men - for armed battle and conflict? Emma discusses culture within the Services with the Labour MP, mayor and former army major Dan Jarvis. Children as young as four have been reported to police for abusing their parents, and according to police force Freedom of Information data, 42,000 incidents were instigated by adolescents and children aged 19 and under between January 2018 and June 2021. This abuse can range from physical, verbal and emotional abuse such as punching, kicking, threatening with knives, swearing or hurling demeaning insults. It is a relatively unacknowledged and under-researched form of abuse, with little support offered to families. It is also gendered with more mothers experiencing it than fathers. Emma is joined by the domestic abuse commissioner Nicole Jacobs, and Sharon, a grandmother who is looking after her nine year old grandson. Parcopresis is the inability to defecate or go for a poo without a certain level of privacy. The condition is also known as shy bowel and it can stop people from feeling comfortable about going at work, while out and about or even while sharing a toilet with a new partner. The knock on effect of this is often constipation and according to The Bowel Group Report 2020 one in seven adults suffer from constipation and 60% of that number are women. What causes this anxiety, why do more women suffer from men and what are the long term health implications of this? Emma asks Eleanor Morgan, author of Hormonal: A Conversation About Women's Bodies, Mental Health and Why We Need to be Heard and Professor Siwan Thomas-Gibson, consultant gastroenterologist and specialist endoscopist at St Mark's National Bowel Hospital in London. Joanna Harriott is in her 50th year of being a teacher. She has worked in west Belfast her entire career and in the same school, St John the Baptist School, since 1973. She tells Emma why she doesn't want to give it up.

Labour lost swathes of working class votes in 2019. Is “progressive patriotism” the answer to getting them back? And what does it even look like?Dan Jarvis, Labour MP for Barnsley Central, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region and author of the memoir Long Way Home Love, Life, Death and Everything in Between, talks to Alex Andreou about why love of country could be Labour's route back to power, why the left are so reluctant to be patriotic… and how his extraordinary life has shaped his political outlook.• “On numerous occasions in 2019 I prepared myself for a physical altercation, such was the anger on the doorstep.” • “In 100 years of the Labour Party, nobody has inherited a more difficult situation than Keir Starmer.” • “People want their MPs to have had real life experiences. I'm a better MP and Mayor because I've done other things.” • “COVID provides us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to for radical change. This week’s guest is Retired Army SFC Dan Jarvis. While deployed to Afghanistan, SFC Jarvis was involved in numerous traumatic incidents, including stepping on a pressure plate that detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) five feet from his position. Dan’s traumatic combat experience and personal tragedies eventually sent him down a dark path that nearly caused him to take his own life. Years later Dan would reach out to the VA for help and was eventually diagnosed with PTSD. The VA diagnosed Dan with Post Traumatic Stress and began to treat him with prolonged exposure therapy, which tormented him nearly as much as the trauma he had experienced. He opted not to continue this line of treatment after the VA canceled a couple of appointments. Dan went through the breakthrough treatment and his experience with alternative therapies was so life-changing that he was compelled to help others find the same relief from traumatic memories. This is when Dan founded the nonprofit 22Zero. It was an honor to sit down with Dan and a discussion that others suffering need to hear.

Burnley came to St. Mary’s and brought with them the weather and a bit of misery as Saints’ fans fought the wind and rain to watch what amounted to a very forgettable match. Other than Danny Ings scoring again (to make it 18 in all comps this year and 15 in the PL), nothing good happened. Redmond was injured in training, Boufal went off early, we let in a goal directly from a corner and had all kinds of possession but no real chances. Burnley had a higher Xg than we did, and even Carl Anka will tell you that’s not supposed to happen. Anyway, Dan was kind enough to join me to fill me in on all that he and his father have been up to recently. Continuing with the LGBTQ History Month theme, We have three incredibly interesting guests talking about queer representation in literature, the arts and music. Karen Pollock is a non binary queer fem whose pronouns are they/them. They are a psychotherapist for LGBTQ people and was the head of equality, diversity and inclusion for Bi Pride. We talk about queer women in literature and how they are represented. Next we have Ken Jarrold who is the Chairman of a large NHS foundation Trust. Ken talks to us about the important legacy of Oscar Wilde and Oscars relevance in 2020. Our final guest is Dan Jarvis of the Green Carnation Theatre Company. We chat about their work and how important they are in giving a voice to queer people now and into the future through the productions they stage.None of the guests know each other but the message that comes across loudly is how important it is to use history and to create history through literature and all aspect of the arts to ensure that all queer people have a voice and are represented.Apologies are given for the length of this Podcast but there were far too many wonderful thoughts that I could not edit to 30 minutes, so you have two for the price of one. Please email in suggestions, comments or ideas for future podcasts to abigmouthful1@gmail.com

Stephen and Raya celebrate a half century of the Cyclist Pod with a bumper edition show; and if you ride bicycles (or even horses), this one is a must. In this massively drawn out podcast (and conversation), it's all about the terrain. Snow? We cover it. Riding huge organic beasts? We cover that too. Saddles both of the tiny triathlong shaped carbon and the massive 15th century leather variety are covered, and the velominati has a say on that too. OBVS. Who wins in a race of horse vs bike? Want the answers? Erm. So do we. But our major topic today is taking your bike off the road; as we discuss mountain biking, as a sport, as a pasttime, and as a way of roadies to get back to nature. And with that, MTB World Cup commentator Dan Jarvis is on the phone to tell us how you can get into it, and who is doing the business at the top end of the sport. LET'S OFF ROAD! Etc. Pastor Dan speaks about the incredible vision that God has for your life and the world.
Dan Jarvis is a former law enforcement officer and combat veteran. Dan came home from his deployments and struggled to adjust to life back at home, and even though he found purpose as a cop, he struggled. Hard. Dan was literally moments away from putting the gun to his head when an unexpected sound made […]

Father’s day has just passed, and on that day, and hopefully others as well, we remember the connection and relationship we have with our dad’s. Additionally, for those of us fortunate enough to have children, it’s a chance to spend some time with them, and gives them a chance to tell us what they think. Not all homes are happy ones, and not all relationships are good ones, but often there is some bond, something that draws the best out of all involved. For my dad and I it was baseball. He coached, I played, I watched his softball games, we went to professional games together, we watched at home, he taught me all about the game, about the intricacies and subtleties of it, and for most of my life I loved baseball more than anything else. I was lucky to have that. No matter what else happened in our relationship, we had that, and that won’t change. This week on the show I spoke with Steve and Dan Jarvis about their relationship and supporting Saints. Steve was in an accident over 30 years ago that left him with limited vision. He and Dan discuss the impact of his impaired vision affected their relationship, supporting Saints home and away, the team and more. You can follow Dan and Steve on Twitter @danjarvisSFC91 and @SteveJarvisSFC, and don’t be afraid to say hello to them at a game or in a pub, they are both very friendly and I’m very honored to be able to talk to them in this manner, and grateful that they agreed to open up a bit about their relationship. Steve and Dan talked about a website they use to help make sure Steve has a radio in order to be sure Steve could hear the radio commentary. The website is http://www.levelplayingfield.org.uk/ so if you know of anyone who may be able to take advantage of the services offered please pass it on. They are there to help make sure everyone can enjoy the events as much as everyone else. This podcast is partnered with The Southampton Page. It’s the English local elections post-mortem episode! You lucky, lucky people.Joined by the New Statesman’s newly returned politics wunderkind Patrick Maguire, I delve into the results in and around cities including Liverpool, Birmingham, Sheffield and Plymouth. We talk about the fledgling LibDem revival; whether the Tories really are as stuffed in Britain’s cities as it appears, and whether the Midlands might be an exception to that; and whether Dan Jarvis really could one day be the mayor of all Yorkshire. We also, inevitably, discuss what, if anything, went wrong for Labour in London – and whether any party can win a national majority any time soon.(International listeners worrying we’ve been a bit parochial lately, fear not: we have episodes on Moscow and Italy coming up, I promise.)Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman’s cities site, CityMetric. It’s hosted by Jonn Elledge. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As I write, it’s local elections day here in England. There are elections in large chunks of the country, but to my shame I’ve only really been paying attention to two: the London borough ones (where there’s a lot of tension around how they might go for the various parties), and the Sheffield City Region mayoral one (where there’s no tension whatsoever because we’ve basically known that Labour’s Dan Jarvis was a lock for months now).Anyway. I talk about those, briefly – but because we won’t have any results until some silly time this evening, our main feature this week is something else entirely.Caroline Crampton was for many years in charge of the internet here at the New Statesman, and is one of the hosts of our pop culture podcast Srsly. Last year, she took on a new role as head of podcasts, and moved to Merseyside to write a book about the Thames Estuary. So, all things considered, I thought it was about time I invited her onto Skylines to talk about it. She tells me how her parents’ journey from South Africa and her childhood in Kent inspired an interest in the estuary; how and why its human, natural and economic geography all differ so radically from the proper Thames, up-river; and why the towns of the estuary keep showing such an enduring enthusiasm for right-wing populist racists. She also tells a frankly horrific story about 600 Victorians who drowned in sewage. It’s a fascinating conversation.Next week, in all likelihood, will be the local election post mortem episode. See you on the other side.Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman’s cities site, CityMetric. It’s hosted by Jonn Elledge. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode 14 of the Sheffield Digital Podcast is ready for you. It’s a good one, as we interviewed two of the candidates in the upcoming Sheffield City Region mayoral election: Hannah Kitching of the Liberal Democrats and Rob Murphy from The Green Party. We asked them about their plans for the region and, in particular, what they saw for the digital sector in the future. I think you’ll find it an interesting listen and thank you to those of you who sent us questions beforehand. I hope we covered most of your suggestions. It’s worth mentioning that we did ask all four candidates from the major parties. Conservative, Ian Walker, couldn’t make the show, but did record a short response to one of our key questions separately. That follows the conversation with Hannah and Rob. And Labour’s Dan Jarvis declines to come on the podcast, but did take part in a roundtable earlier in the week. Both Chris and Mel were at that meeting and offer their thoughts on what he said in this episode too. After all that, we go through the usual new and events from around Sheffield’s digital community. In particular, Chris offers more detail on the Urban Connected Communities 5G bid following the interview I did with Mark Gannon. I hope you enjoy this rather unique episode and, as always, do get in touch to let us know what you think. Now with chapters! Our episodes are typically split into at least two sections, which include an interview and then the latest news updates. You can now easily skip between these sections if you use an app that supports chapters! Raya and Stephen catch up with all two-wheel based goings on in this extended episode, where they delve into some Zwiftery, triathlon news and general idiocy. Fashionably late to the cyclocross party, our feature today has us talking from Cyclist Pod HQ to the voice of live UK events Dan Jarvis, while he hides in his car from his cleaning lady. As ever there's the Velominati, the Kitbag, News, a (literally) hairy The Bike Price is Right, Triathlon World, and You Drive Like a D*ck.
