Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay take five months off to relax at a mountainous inn and discuss one of the greatest and most unnerving films of all time, 'The Shining.' Bombay kicks it off with a story about using an old school typewriter, Jack Torrance style, while outta his mind high on shrooms. Then Andy reminisces about the time he overdid it on psychedelics and walked into a furry convention in a hotel ballroom. Despite the heavy tone of the movie the fellas keep it light while discussing Stanley Kubrick's visually audacious opus. They mention Jack's drink of choice, a bourbon and egg liqueur, which is one of the oddest movie cocktails they ever noticed. Afterwards, the guys try their best to make sense of Jack accepting the job offer which was replete with one minor caveat: the last man who had your job went insane and murdered himself and his family. Then they talk about Jack Nicholson's insane faces throughout the entire runtime, and Shelley Duvall's performance that was unfairly maligned for years for being cranked to a 12 — but is alarmingly effective. The boys also go over how it wasn't such a bad deal for young Danny Torrance who got free reign in the sprawling hotel on his Big Wheel-trike, while getting to spend time with some cute twin girls his own age. Pop the episode on and listen to us forever, and ever, and ever...

In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank and Thomas tackle Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic, The Shining. They delve into the film's complex filmmaking techniques, such as its use of Steadicam and impossible architecture, and explore the layered meanings behind Jack Nicholson's iconic performance as Jack Torrance. From the eerie vibes of the Overlook Hotel to the haunting final photograph, this episode breaks down the symbolism and psychological horror that makes The Shining a timeless masterpiece. Plus, hear personal stories about horror movie experiences, including Thomas' encounter with the real-life Stanley Hotel! Stanley Kubrick's filmmaking techniques, such as Steadicam and impossible architecture, play a major role in unsettling the audience. Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Jack Torrance is both iconic and chilling, adding depth to the character's descent into madness. Wendy Torrance, while often criticized for being a flat character, plays a crucial role in demonstrating the horror from a “normal” person's perspective. The ending photograph continues to spark debate, with theories ranging from reincarnation to Jack being eternally trapped by the hotel. Memorable Quotes: “This is one of those films where the filmmaking ascends beyond the movie itself.” – Frank “Jack Nicholson's performance is just a masterclass in madness.” – Thomas “Kubrick's use of impossible architecture messes with your subconscious.” – Frank “The hotel is like a character itself, constantly shifting and playing with your mind.” – Thomas Call to Action: If you loved this breakdown of The Shining, don't forget to subscribe to Challenge Accepted on your favorite podcast platform! My Guest: Nathan on Twitter: Nathan Needs A Username @needing_name Midnight Screening on Twitter: @Screening_Pod Warning: This is one of those reviews that is entertaining, but it is "a bit wordy". Discussion Points: -Sean begins with a quote from William Friedkin. -The initial reception to the film, when it was released. -This film sounds really underwhelming if you describe it. -The impact of Diane Johnson's screenplay, which she co-wrote with Stanley Kubrick. -The fantastic music. -Brian Clough: the greatest manager England never had. -The effectiveness of not telling the audience everything and "abiding with inconsistencies". -The innovative use of the Steadicam system, with the guy who invented it working on the film. -Sean got his money's worth out of that Special Features disc. -Nathan discusses the subliminal messages in the film, particularly the shifting geography. -Stanley Kubrick's working relationship with the cast, particularly Shelley Duvall: "the elephant in the room whilst discussing The Shining" as Nathan puts it. -James Cameron's similar temperament whilst directing. -Even Steven Spielberg thought that Jack Nicholson was overacting. -The background of Jack Torrance and Danny Torrance's relationship. -Sean loves that scene, but hates that word. -The Apollo 11 Moon Landings. -Stanley Kubrick's filmography. -Nathan and Sean reminisce about their Defend It Yourself: Resident Evil (2002) review. -Drop kicking a [zombie] dog in the face. Raised Questions: -How is it that one of the scariest films of all times being with the shot of a yellow beetle driving through the Colorado Rockies? -Are they ghosts? -Is Stephen King happy with any of his films? -Who tells their kid about The Donner Party? -How great would Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon have been? -Does this film constantly put the audience on the back-foot? -Did J.K. Rowling take inspiration for The Goblet of Fire hedge maze from The Shining novel/book? -Did you know there were Razzie nominations for this film? -Why did Kubrick do so many takes? -What convinced Kate Winslet do another water film with James Cameron? -Why does Sean keep bringing up football managers to his mainly-American audience? -Does this film unwind you? -Is there any alcohol left at the Overlook Hotel? -Did Jack Torrance drink to cope with having 'The shine'? -Was Kubrick just a big fan of horses? -Is the film an analogy for Schizophrenia? -Do people lower their expectations for 'horror' films? Random Recommendations: -Capricorn One (1978). -Doctor Sleep (2019). -Room 237 (2012). -Artificial Intelligence (2001). Thanks For Listening! Lucy Buglass (Tea-V-Time podcast) and Sean Higgins (The Sofa Cinema) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Lucy's choice Doctor Sleep. Doctor Sleep is the 2019 supernatural horror, written and directed by Mike Flanagan based on the 2013 Stephen King novel of the same name that is also the sequel to the hugely popular book and film The Shining. It stars Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance, who is now an alcoholic, traumatised by the incident at the Overlook Hotel in 1980 and still experiencing his psychic powers (the shining). He ends up working at a hospice and uses his shining to comfort dying patients and earns the nickname Doctor Sleep. Meanwhile, a group called the True Knots who feed on the ‘steam' released from killing those who have the shinning, led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), are kidnapping, torturing and killing children. During a killing by the True Knots a child with an extremely strong shine called Abra senses it and she telepathically alerts Danny to it. This also alerts Rose the Hat and it becomes a game of cat and mouse as Danny and Abra try to avoid capture by the True Knots. Coming in at a hefty two hours 32 minutes you have to be committed and most likely have seen or read The Shining to want to watch Doctor Sleep. It suffered from poor marketing and average reviews on release, the Flixwatcher scores however were more favourable, particularly on recommendability and engagement and Doctor Sleep scores 3.78 overall.   [supsystic-tables id=296] Episode #284 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #284 Crew of Sean Higgins (@SeanHig44489215) and Lucy Buglass (@TeaVTimePod) Find their Websites online at https://t.co/UtruPQSYBj and at https://twitter.com/TeaVTimePod Please make sure you give them some love   More about Doctor Sleep For more info on Doctor Sleep, you can visit Doctor Sleep IMDb page here or Doctor Sleep Rotten Tomatoes page here. We invite the Profe$$ional A$$hole to discuss the Shining sequel, impressively of both the book and the movie versions, in 2019's "Doctor Sleep".Danny Torrance is all grownz up and still haunted by the events at the Overlook Hotel that happened when he was a child.  He drinks to hide the pain and dull his shine, following his father's footsteps.  He gains the resolve to right himself and encounters a gifted young girl who “shines” brightly to attract psychic vampires who want to hunt her down so he must help save her and finally rid the world of the Overlook. This is a fun discussion where our guest dons the satiric persona of Alec Jones, an imaginary half-brother to the famous “conspiracy theorist” who turns out to be right...just early in many cases. We will return next week with another horror film, John Carpenter's “Prince of Darkness” with the great Prof CJ of the Dangerous History Podcast.Show notes:   http://www.actualanarchy.com/257Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.comRobert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

Making a sequel to a beloved classic was always going to be tough sledding, but the talented writer/director Mike Flanagan simply couldn't make a great movie out of Stephen King's follow-up to The Shining. Maybe the failure with Doctor Sleep mostly lies with King's overly detailed book and all of its subplots. Maybe it's that we get far too much of the top-hatted Rebecca Ferguson and her fellow steam-sniffing pseudo-vampires. Or maybe it's that there just aren't very many real scares in this horror show. We couldn't sneer at Ewan McGregor's work though because he does a terrific job playing grown-up alcoholic Danny Torrance. We also liked the finale at the Overlook more than most people did. Some ups, many downs. In any case, don't let our overall disappointment ruin your enjoyment of the 409th Ellises' Analysis. Just crank up an omnipresent heartbeat sound effect and stuff your demons in a mind-box as we dabble in the redrum of Doctor Sleep. Well, Actually: On second thought, Abra's mother Lucy might be the one who's Jack Torrance's daughter from an affair. And if THAT'S correct, then Dan really would be Abra's uncle. 'Is God Male?'Full Service featuring guest speaker Clare Cockerill and a Zoom Call with Ellen Ripley on the Nostromo'Season Two - Episode NineWelcome to Creepy Cove Community Church, the friendly congregation on the windswept peak overlooking the notorious fishing town of Creepy Cove. This podcast episode features one of our full church services, with a talk, music, special guests, and more. Our church administrator starts the service by introducing our topic 'Is God Male?' then he's happily interrupted by a couple of wee ankle biters from the congregation, Veronica and Malcolm. But what special powers do they possess?Next, he explains all about the awful toilet incident in the last service. Sincere apologies to all involved. Then it's all excitement as Rupert engages in a Zoom Video Call all the way from Earth to space...for he interviews his beloved neice, Ellen Ripley, who is working on board the Nostromo at present, and is soon to be home. But will her news be happy or horrid? Tune in to find out. After a brief Bible reading, it's over to our guest Clare Cockerill who looks into the most intriguing question: 'Is God Male?' Then, after a time of meditation, it's over to our church band, for this week's Horror Hymn. This one's called 'Blender' and looks at how horror movies have sometimes been both forward thinking (and backward) when it comes to gender stereotypes. Finally, Rupert comes to Peter with his phone on speaker...for he has managed to contact the filthy, evil Xenemorph who invaded the Nostromo. But why is he so dang sweet and friendly? All that is left is to wrap up the service and that's that. Thanks again for coming to our wonderful church on the peak!PS I'd be might grateful if you could check out the Creepy Cove Patreon Program, to see how you can support the church and become more of a part of The Congregation here...and get a bunch of exclusive extras, too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/creepycove)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/creepycove)

Gen and Jette dive into the extended canon of some of their favourite series/universes. We crave more from the characters we love but do we really want more of their stories? Show Notes: Why is is that extended canon books never quite live up to the original books you fell in love with? Do you automatically read extended canon even if you know it might disappoint you? Yes… Yes we do. The series that we no longer speak of by the author we do not speak of has a very bad track record with extended canon - The stage play? Really? Yikes. What do you call a book series of 4 books - Quartet? Quadriology? Did y’all know there was a novella in the Twilight series? Jette was wrong - Doctor Sleep the NOVEL does follow the original novel. The film adaptation of Doctor Sleep is a blend of the new novel and the Kubrick film. The story of The Shining and Danny Torrance is so much bigger than the collective consciousness of us all! We LOVE our proper architectural blueprints and laid out timelines Check out our episode on The Rules of Magic. Comic books and superhero stories and grown into almost all extended canon at this point. We talked about this in our Graphic Novels episode too. Jette was right - the Batman films we grew up on were considered a series - Batman Forever is listed as a “stand-alone sequel” to Batman Returns (an obvious sequel to Tim Burton’s Batman). Batman & Robin is considered the 4th film in the Warner Brothers series, despite different Batmans and directors throughout. Looking back, our episode on The Shale Project is about extended canon too. All of the technology and firetruck noises in this episode - sorry! Gen doesn’t have self control when it comes to Maggie Stiefvater Star Wars has become the definition of extended canon. Films and novelizations and animated series Oh My! Authors Mentioned (too many books to list!): Stephenie Meyers (Twilight universe) Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games universe) Phillip Pullman (His Dark Materials universe Maggie Stiefvater (The Raven Cycle and more) Stephen King (All of the books) David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas etc) Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic series) Leigh Bardugo (The Grishaverse and more) VE Schwab (Shades of Magic and more) Ransom Riggs (Miss Peregrine series) Adaptations: BBC His Dark Materials The prequel films to the series that we no longer speak of Castle Rock All 3 Spider-man trilogies - Sorry Tobey and Andrew - Tom for the win All 3 Batman series’ (3rd one coming soon) Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook or email us at hello@anotherbookontheshelf.com. Doctor Sleep is the 2019 "sequel" to Stephen King's & Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. It follows Danny Torrance, Jack Torrance's son, through his alcoholic adulthood and subsequent recovery. This week, we take delivery of Ken Loach's latest, Sorry We Missed You and talk to the director himself. Plus, 37 years later, we return to the Overlook Hotel for The Shining sequel Doctor SleepDirector Ken Loach teams once again with I, Daniel Blake screenwriter Paul Laverty for another indictment of the capitalist forces shaping modern Britain. Ricky is dreaming of better things for his family when he becomes a delivery van driver. But as an ‘independent contractor', he's working in unsparing conditions, just like his wife Abbie, a care nurse, both of them on zero hours contracts. Living like this means that they're pushed to the brink, and their world falls apart when their teenage son starts to go off the rails.Whatever happened to Danny Torrance, the gifted young boy from The Shining? It's a question that must have vexed Stephen King enough to produce a sequel 37 years later. In Doctor Sleep, a grown-up Danny (Ewan McGregor) finds himself in the role of protector to a young girl on the run from a cult that is hell-bent on harvesting her gift.Discussing the films this week are Jake Cunningham, Sam Howlett, Kelly Powell and Ella KempFollow the team on Social Media:@jakehcunningham - Jake@samhowlett_1 - Sam@ks_powell - Kelly@ella_kemp - EllaProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast.
