We've been getting through quite a few of the very first champions lately. Apparently Riot had a thing for the letter S! Sivir didn't have much going on until they used her to resurrect Azir and kick off a war between a bunch of Ascended, although Sivir doesn't seem to care about any of that (mood). She's a simple gal with dead parents who just wants to rob people, but also maybe uhhh take away Ascenion from Darkin and uhhh use it for something else. Ahead of the release of their third album in two decades, Before There Was Air, Boa Morte sat down to chat about their creative process, influences such as Sigur Ros, the changing Cork scene over the last 20 years, Spotify and lots more. Before There Was Air is released on Gare Du Nord Records on September 27, 2019. Press release: Before There Was Air is only the band's third album in two decades, but that mirrors the stately pace of their music. Set for release this September, Before There Was Air sees Boa Morte infuse their brand of slow-burning, alternative folk with elements of electronic, ambient and new-classical music. The album was recorded last year at Herbert Place Studios, with James Darkin at the desk. To fully capture the subtleties of the band's quiet dynamic, Darkin installed them in the same room with the mics opened wide. The basic tracks were then layered with analogue synths, drones, piano, wind, strings and effects. This distinctive compositional and textural mix prompted both London's Gare Du Nord Records and Tremolo Publishing to sign the band this year. Boa Morte formed in Cork, Ireland in 1998, rising from the dust of a couple of ragged but respected indie bands. By the end of that year, the band released their Passenger, Measure Your Time debut EP, produced by Mark Carolan. That record sparked significant record label interest, culminating in the band signing to US label Moodfood Records, home of Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. The debut album was produced by Daniel Presley, well respected for his work with Spain and The Breeders. But just before the scheduled release date, Moodfood went bankrupt. It took the band (and their lawyers) until 2002 to recover the tapes. In stepped Shoeshine Records, the Glasgow imprint run by Teenage Fanclub drummer Francis MacDonald. In July 2002, Soon It Will Come Time To Face The World Outside, Boa Morte's debut album, was released to widespread critical acclaim. Those impressed by the record included Uncut, Mojo, Q Magazine and John Peel. The band toured throughout Ireland and the UK with the likes of Teenage Fanclub and Calexico. Boa Morte's second album, The Dial Waltz (2009) followed a similar aesthetic and was equally well-received, Q magazine hailing the record as a “supremely elegant sound-track for staring into your half-empty pint.” But now the glass is full again. You can hear a decade of listening on Before There Was Air, a record that distils broad musical influences to enhance their singular, tuneful avant-folk, while remaining distinctly Boa Morte. Die Maiernen Sonnentage sorgen für aufgekratzte Stimmung bei Joachim von www.stromstock.de und Tobi von www.appgemeinde.de. Nach einer verpatzten Einleitung geben sich die gefürchteten Klappspaten Torben und Klaus die Ehre, um zartbesaitete Hörer mit einem Niveaulimbo zu vergrätzen. Joachim greift die aufgeheizte Stimmung auf, um seinem Ärger über Surgeon Simulator Luft zu machen. Hat der sich selbst nicht ernst nehmende OP-Simulator doch viel Potenzial, die furchtbare Steuerung sorgt für konsequente Behandlungsfehler. Im krassen Gegensatz dazu steht die vor allem von Tobi geschätzte Portierung von Thomas Was Alone, einem sich wie Rymdkapsel in grafischem Minimalismus übenden Plattformer mit komplexer Erzählung. Zur Abkühlung geht es in arktische Gefilde, doch leider sind bei Last Inua – An Arctic Adventure die Spielfiguren und damit auch der Spielspaß fast festgefroren. Schade, denn zumindest atmosphärisch macht der Titel viel her. Auch Table Tennis Touch sieht ebenfalls hervorragend aus und Trommelwirbel spielt sich auch so. Sport trifft Action und die Kombination ist bei weitem nicht so gefährlich wie Judo – Joachim referiert aus der verstaubten Erinnerung die Durchführung von Uchi Mata. Die PC-Umsetzung Botanicula bezaubert Tobi auch auf dem iPad, aber nur weil es eben einfach ein zauberhaftes Spiel ist. Bei der Umsetzung selbst sehen die beiden App-Consultants Luft nach oben: Störende Format-Balken und rumpelige Touch-Steuerung, der man ihre Maus-Wurzeln deutlich anmerkt. Rumpeln und knarzen tut auch der 2-Bit Cowboy, der allerdings hinter seiner liebreizenden Retro-Game-Boy-Fassade nichts zu bieten hat. Ein guter Grund für Joachim, sich wieder aufzuregen. Kann man ja die Uhr nach stellen. Zum Rausschmiss analysieren die beiden App-Experten, was dem grundsätzlich schönen Darkin fehlt, um es in den Match–3-Olymp zu 10.000.000, Scurvy Scullywags & Co. zu befördern. Spaß macht die Teilchen-Kombiniererei aber beiden. Dem entgegen steht der fantasielose Plattformer Atom Run, bei dem die eigentlich geschätzten Entwickler von Fingerlabs ihr kreatives Pulver in den ersten Spielstufen verschießen und den Spieler dann zum grinden zwingen. Associate Director, Hamish Pirie, interviews well known playwrights, artists and theatre makers whose work features in the year round programme at the Traverse. In this episode, Hamish speaks to Fleur Darkin, Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre, as their latest tour, Yama/Kingdom, comes to the Traverse stage. Fleur’s work made under her own company Hotel (2005), Augustine (2007), Low Fidelity (2009) and DisGo (2009) toured to more than 100 venues in the UK alone. Internationally, her artistic practice has been commissioned by partners including Junges Hundes (Germany), P.A.R.T.S. (Belgium) and Bolzano Danz (Italy). Fleur is a prolific collaborator and her theatre work includes Roam (Grid Iron), Playtime (West Yorkshire Playhouse), You Tell Us What Was (National Theatre of Scotland), Bint Jbeil (Grid Iron/National Theatre of Scotland), The Three Musketeers (Traverse/Belgrade), Virgins (Company of Angels) and various productions for venues including Birmingham Rep, Dundee Rep, Bristol Old Vic, Liverpool's Everyman, Edinburgh Lyceum and Battersea Arts Centre. Darkin’s large-scale projects include three Glastonbury Festivals, choreographing the world’s first ever science musical, Dr Tatiana, (Channel 4/Discovery) and the 2006 commission Parabolic, which played to a live audience of 25,000. Circus productions include Helter Skelter (Tramway/Brewhouse), War and Peace (Giffords Circus) and her aerial choreography for Threesixty's Peter Pan - "best of all" Benedict Nightingale (The Times) - was seen by audiences of over 300,000 on its two year global tour. She is a passionate advocate of innovative dance education and was at the helm of The Collaboratory - the UK's first peer-lead choreographic laboratory in 2012. Darkin has choreographed in castles, universities, prisons, schools and nightclubs and written for publications including The Guardian, Icon and The Observer. Darkin is passionate that dance is a powerful means of self-transformation and has worked with participants in schools, pupil referral units and mental health charities. Darkin is currently developing partnerships with the V&A at Dundee and various festivals and venues in India and Brazil for forthcoming projects.
