As part of LudoNarraCon, Patrick had an opportunity to spend an hour chatting with Davey Wreden, acclaimed designer behind The Stanley Parable, The Beginner's Guide, and Wanderstop. Patrick and Davey were in similar social circles while living in San Francisco, but it's been a minute since they caught up. During the chat, the two discuss the consequences of early fame, the problems with using video game design as therapy for your soul, and more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Review code provided by Ivy Road- thank you! I think we all viewed Davey Wreden's new project announcement, a "cozy game about making tea", with a bit of side-eye. Is it really just going to be about making tea? You sure there isn't going to be a subversion in there? Are you still reading this? Well, Wanderstop is here, and it may not have the type of subversion that we expected, but it is most definitely not just a cozy game about making tea. This long-awaited game has been delayed multiple times over the last year, but was that extra time well spent? Tom is here to tell us his thoughts about the latest entry in the long-running series!Tom also recently played the latest game from The Stanley Parable's Davey Wreden, Wanderstop. What appears to be a simple cozy game on the surface is actually a deep and thoughtful meditation on how to recover from burnout (something I think many of us can relate to, given the last few years). Will it appeal to both fans of the genre and those who are looking for a more narrative-based experience? And finally, Jono gets to chat about an amazing new visual novel from the geniuses at inkle, Expelled! #35. What is a cosy game? A love letter to gaming's gentler side (feat. Wanderstop)

Sakes alive, we're 35, and in this episode we've been inspired by the recent release of Wanderstop to turn our attention to the nebulous topic of cosy games. Is "cosy" a genre? A theme? A vibe? Are all cosy games broadly the same, or is it just a blanket term that can refer to any game without a central combat mechanic? Is "cosy" even still a valid classification now that we've moved so far past all major new titles being, essentially, Doom with a different paint job? All these questions and more will be debated enthusiastically by the Indieventure trio, even if we entirely lack the ability to form a consensus that provides you with definitive answers. What we can manage, however, is to rattle off a bunch of cosy game recommendations, drawing from personal favourites and cosy classics (and indeed both) to come up with a list that encompasses indie titles as disparate as Stardew Valley (naturally), Chicory: A Colorful Tale, Dorfromantik, Dungeons of Hinterberg, the Frog Detective trilogy, House Flipper 2, Lil' Gator Game, Ooblets, PowerWash Simulator, Proteus, Tangle Tower, Tiny Life, TOEM, Wilmot Works It Out, and Frostpunk (no, really!). We also have a crack at an informal group review of Wanderstop, which has elicited an impressive array of thoughts and opinions among a trio of people who normally tend to kind of agree on most things. Who thought what? You'll have to listen to find out, but I can reveal it's a good chat. (And if you haven't yet listened to the recent Indieventure Extra episode where Liam interviews creators Davey Wreden and Karla Zimonja, here's the link to that!) Finally, as always, we end with our current hyperfixations. Liam is still absolutely caning through an essential catalogue of new and recent game releases, and has this time turned his attention to Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest in Capcom's long-running series about invading the habitats of majestic creatures and turning their hides into some fancy pants. Rebecca is trying to live by Wanderstop's example and be kinder to herself, which mainly involves taking a lot of naps at the moment, but she also throws in a couple of bonus recommendations for anti-burnout narratives in the form of Travis Baldree's high fantasy coffee shop novel Legends & Lattes, and of course the evergreen Pokémon Concierge miniseries. And Rachel's circled back to Mindhack, a dystopian visual novel about neutralising enemies of the state with beautiful electronic flowers that painfully rewire their dissident thoughts. You might remember this one from a couple of years ago, and it's good to see it still steadily making its way through early access, and now including four chapters of a planned eight-slash-nine. Hello and welcome back to Indieventure Extra, our bonus series where we interview key members of the games industry. Liam recently sat down with Davey Wreden (The Stanley Parable, The Beginner's Guide) and Karla Zimonja (Gone Home) to chat about Wanderstop, their recently released game about a burned-out warrior attempting to find solace by running a tea shop in the woods. If you've yet to play Wanderstop, there are no spoilers to be found here, so don't worry. Davey and Karla mainly chatted about how the game came to be, what it's like to make a game about burnout that is actively burning you out as you're making it, as well as the challenges - and the benefits - of making a narrative-led game within the cosy genre framework. We also spoke about Boro. Best Boy Boro. Here is the TTRPG about parrying that Karla mentioned in the Hyperfixations section. Enjoy! Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Avete presente no? Ne ho aperto un paio che avevano attirato la mia attenzione, uno di questi è 'Fast animals slow children', animali veloci bambini lenti, ogni episodio è un interessantissimo inseguimento: gli animali sono molto veloci e i bambini sono molto lenti, naturalmente appare su 'Family guy' che è una serie di cartoni animati ideata da Seth MacFarlane, in italiano mi pare che si chiami i Griffin, è molto sarcastico.ENGLISH TRANSLATIONThere is an artistic genre that I particularly like, it is the meta story, the meta work of art, i.e. the story, the book, the artwork or even the video game that are inside another book, another work of art or another video game. Think of 'If on a winter's night a traveller' by Italo Calvino, which is a book that contains dozens of other books where a story develops, or I also think of 'The beginner's guide' the videogame by Davey Wreden the author of 'The Stanley parable' that if you are familiar with the stories I tell in my podcast 3 uncut, I think I have also dedicated an episode to it, because it is a video game that transcends the story and also transcends the relationship between narrator and player. Wandering through the newsletters that I receive every morning, I got one that talks about yet another meta story, and this time we are talking about Netflix. It must have happened to you, to watch something on TV and in this something they talk about another TV series, which is therefore a TV series within the TV series. Someone has decided to collect all these fake TV series, which do not exist except in the fiction of the TV series, and to organize them as TV programs and dramas are organized within the Netflix site. You know, don't you? All the squares, you click on one square and the program tab opens and then you can watch the program. It is exactly like that, it has exactly the same design, the only difference is that when you click on the square that tells you about the program, the real program does not open to you, you cannot watch it because, I repeat, it is a fictional program, but there is a small summary, a synopsis that tells you what it's about and what real program it appears in. I opened a couple that caught my attention, one of them is 'Fast animals slow children', each episode being a very interesting chase: the animals are very fast and the children are very slow, of course it appears on 'Family guy 'which is a cartoon series created by Seth MacFarlane, in Italian I think it's called the Griffins, it's very sarcastic.

Ben and Tao sit down to overcome their differences through Dr Hakim's therapy-with-a-difference in the maritally redemptive, cooperative 3D platforming genre mangler, It Takes Two. In a very grown up discussion, they chat relationship difficulties, target audiences, comparable cooperative games and the confusion of critical acclaim, the role of minigames - charming or cheap? - and there's even some bonus audio from their hilariously incompetent gameplay together.   Spoilers from early on and with warnings, but nothing that would ruin the gameplay experience.   Content Warning: PEGI 12, argumentative and petty, with poor parenting tips. We are not counsellors. Very coarse language.   Clarifications: It Takes Two is rated PEGI 12 for moderate violence and use of bad language. Violence is non-realistic, and no blood or injuries are shown. The Stanley Parable is an interactive drama and walking simulator designed and written by developers Davey Wreden and William Pugh. Stop putting lampposts in my podcasts. Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket! For our first episode of the year, we’re going to be taking a look at Davey Wreden’s The Beginner’s Guide. While the developer is certainly best known for The Stanley Parable, this game does a lot to show the level of dedication Davey has to making narrative games that break the mold of what you would expect from the genre. In this particular instance, we are being taken on a tour through the games of “Coda,” a hobbyist developer and friend of Davey’s, as they become more and more disjointed and laden with symbolism. While this is happening, there is narration playing to give context to the games and explain what some things mean and how they came to be. And all of that text was necessary to give you a basic explanation for what this game is, but it is the emotional core that really gives the game its flavor. Play it for yourself before listening if it at all seems interesting. Why? Because we’re talking about the narrative structure of a game about games with narrative structures, game development and its associated stresses, and how this game is basically a sequel to Half-Life 2’s developer commentary. Thank you for joining us this episode, and we’ll be back (hopefully in a shorter time) with an episode about Harvest Moon, marking the legendary return to handheld consoles in a series called “Pocket.” We hope you’ll check it out!

The Stanley Parable originated as a mod for Half-Life 2 made by Davey Wreden. The mod proved to be relatively popular for its unique sense of humor and the way it played with gaming interactivity in novel ways. The result was that it became a fully fledged title that released at the tail end of 2013. Falling into that adventure game sub-genre of games that are sometimes derisively called "walking simulators," The Stanley Parable focuses on exploring interactivity in a digital medium by posing an iconic choice to the player: If you enter a room with two doors and someone tells you to go through the door on the left, but you are fully capable of going through the door on the right, which do you choose? With humor, minimalist design, and some brilliant voice work by Kevan Brighting, is The Stanley Parable one of the best games period? Gaming News: Wargaming CEO accepts blame, vows renewed focus on World of Tanks  Sega, Creative Assembly Announce Total War: Warhammer 2 About The Stanley Parable The Stanley Parable: The Adventure Line™ The Stanley Parable is an interactive fiction video game designed by Davey Wreden. The game originally released on July 27, 2011 as a free modification for Half-Life 2. Engine: Source Genre: Interactive fiction Writer(s): Davey Wreden; William Pugh Narrator: Kevan Brighting Designers: William Pugh, Davey Wreden Developers: Galactic Cafe, Davey Wreden The Stanley Parable Game Discussion: Game Club Overview The Stanley Parable is a first person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end. Contradiction follows contradiction, the rules of how games should work are broken, then broken again. This world was not made for you to understand. But as you explore, slowly, meaning begins to arise, the paradoxes might start to make sense, perhaps you are powerful after all. The game is not here to fight you; it is inviting you to dance. What choices did you make on the first play through? The inner workings of narrative games. What Stanley Parable says about games and game development. Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers Our favourite endings And More… If you liked The Stanley Parable, you may like:   Catherine Recommends Bastion: Bastion is an action role-playing experience that redefines storytelling in games, with a reactive narrator who marks your every move. Explore more than 40 lush hand-painted environments as you discover the secrets of the Calamity, a surreal catastrophe that shattered the world to pieces. Wield a huge arsenal of upgrade-able weapons and battle savage beasts adapted to their new habitat. Finish the main story to unlock the New Game Plus mode and continue your journey! Pony Island Pony Island is a suspense puzzle game in disguise. You are in limbo, trapped in a malevolent and malfunctioning arcade machine devised by the devil himself. The devil detests having his puzzles solved and poor programming exposed; you will need to think outside the box to proceed and you will be insulted when you do. Daniel Recommends Portal 1 & 2 Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay. The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life® 2's Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation. Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuvering objects, and themselves, through space. Thomas Was Alone Steam, Kinguin,  Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment. Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.   The Stanley Parable is available on: Steam - US$14.99 Kinguin - AU$8.56 Reach out to Game Club on Twitter: Tweet to us using #GameClubCast Follow Daniel - @nfgDan Encourage Charles to Tweet - @CharlesBryers Read Catherine's scripts - @CSMcMullen   Next Time on Game Club This War of Mine Steam, Kinguin In This War Of Mine you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger from snipers and hostile scavengers. The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle. The pace of This War of Mine is imposed by the day and night cycle. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout: crafting, trading and taking care of your survivors. At night, take one of your civilians on a mission to scavenge through a set of unique locations for items that will help you stay alive. Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them for longer-term survival. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better. PS. There's currently a sale on Humble Bundle for This War of Mine, if you're playing along with us, it may be worth picking up a copy here.

Join us for a discussion of The Beginner's Guide. This game is so complicated and so deep and so oddly emotional - whether funny or brutally devastating is really up to you, apparently - that we bring in a psychiatrist to help us sift through the experience. I'm having a hard time deciding exactly what to type here about this game; it's almost a divine experience certainly without parallel in the gaming space, an opinion I hold to the level of that for Kentucky Route Zero. The Beginner's Guide is not as much all about videogames as The Stanley Parable, but instead it's a game all about the making of games, the sustaining of the creative forces required to make such inhumanly exhausting projects that are such pieces of the creators' soul(s). I don't want to spoil this experience for any of you (spoiling is what listening to our podcast is for, after all), but take it from me: this is a game you should play if you've ever even considered the humans behind your games. We recommend listening to our The Stanley Parable podcast beforehand, the spiritual precursor to this game, also by Davey Wreden.Relevant links!Check out our own musician Pauly, whose song Unravishing is featured in this episode!Galactic Cafe: Davey Wreden's blog post about The Stanley ParableThe Artist is Absent: Davey Wreden and The Beginner's Guide - a truly amazing analysis video of The Beginner's Guide by Innuendo Studios on YouTube (33m)Errant Signal: The Beginner's Guide - another awesome breakdown analysis from the YouTube channel Errant Signal (20m) - watch this if you suspect Coda might be a real personThe theme this week is "The Func" by VCMG, a free download from chipmusic.org.The Will's Quiz Minute(tm) theme is Linker, also by beloved Pauly!
