That background, combined with a belief that modern AI tools can offer new avenues for creative exploration when thoughtfully leveraged, has led Sam to build several services to assist and inspire photographers. These include Insight, which analyses images in real time, returning visual pose ideas based on the actual environment and subjects in front of the lens - an entirely new process for breaking through creative blocks while working.  Justin Benson started out photographing sets and location scouting for film and TV. But in 2011 his life changed after he answered a last-minute call from a family friend in need of a wedding photographer. Justin quickly discovered wedding photography was his true calling and he's been at it ever since, with his wife joining him as a second shooter in 2016. Based in Connecticut, Justin works in a modern traditional style, combining a hint of candid moments with posed scenes.  In 2019, just before COVID started shutting things down, Justin learned about an enterprising developer who was seeking photographer input to incorporate in an AI-powered image culling app he was cooking up. Sam Hurd got interviewed on what motivates him on a daily basis. Everything from removing friction to making sure you like what you're doing to experimenting. We've talked about this before, but I am an under-functioner! When I get stressed out or overwhelmed, I shut down. In that exact same situation, Sam's brain goes into overdrive. Since it's SO EASY to jump on the comparison game (especially living in the same house) I thought a conversation about it would be interesting. I need structure, but Sam thrives with a bit of chaos! So I talk with him about what that's like. Sometimes our brains are just different and that's OK!

On this episode, we tell you about Sam Hurd, a wide receiver in the NFL that played for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears. Our guest on this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast is Sam Hurd. While he is primarily a wedding photographer, I have no doubt that he could photograph anything and make it look interesting. Hurd is also a portrait photographer; he dabbles in landscape work; and is a passionate photo educator. A few minutes listening to this episode and it becomes clear that he can articulate his process as well as he can execute it. He offers “deconstructions” of his images for his Patreon followers and teaches his style, technique, and gear, but today we focus on his “side hustles,” on the methods and platforms he uses to engage with clients and make extra money from the wedding photography he is already doing. We start by discussing his Patreon platform and how he uses his wedding-photography images and insights to build a following of “patrons,” who pay monthly subscriptions to follow his tutorials. We then jump to Stocksy, and how his well-curated set of stock images, mostly taken at weddings, creates an additional revenue flow. He also speaks of DVLOP, which is a site that markets presets that he has created while processing his wedding work. Of course, each of these ancillary platforms flows into and out of each other not only to gain him clients but to improve his photography. He mentions several times how the challenge of producing interesting tutorials has forced him to be more inventive. Despite a very simple kit when shooting weddings, Hurd is also a self-described gearhead and he and Allan bond over their love for vintage glass and discuss recent purchases, including the Hasselblad 907X 50c and the Canon R6. Finally, we touch on Hurd’s first professional gig, as the staff photographer for the National Press Club, some of the famous faces he photographed, and the odd but practical practice techniques he developed to practice his portraiture. (15:00) The reality is, we’re constantly learning and trying to figure out the best. We don’t have a ton of brand loyalty. There’s great things about all the brands, so we discuss some of the differences and strengths.  In camera multiple exposures, the editing process and videos. (18:45) He shares about the multiple exposure process he does in camera to create amazing images like the one below. He also brags on his partner Nessa and her amazing video and editing work.  Creative burnout and making enough money to create a successful career that will last. (22:00) When it comes to creativity, it’s so important to embrace failure and becoming comfortable putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation. He keeps trying and failing. It excites him to hit roadblocks. He has a whole livestream of live classes and is willing to show the ideas that flop and “all that matters in the end result.” Fresh eyes can make a huge difference too. He channels his nerves into excitement rather than anxiety. For the first 3 years, he worked full time and also shot weddings full time so he had dual income streams. As he made more money, he tried to keep living on one income. These multiple income streams have served him well over the years, especially this year with Covid-19. Sam doesn’t love to manage people. He enjoys working without a second shooter, even though he sometimes brings an assistant at a wedding. Not outsourcing has actually been a huge business benefit to him. (31:00) The common advice might be to outsource up a storm, but there’s is benefit to staying in touch with all the areas of your business. “It’s so worth being intimately involved in all aspects of your work and as slowly as you can, outsource.” He does outsource album design. We talk Honeybook (get 50% off your first year here) and the Superhuman app.  Sam shares his favorite productivity apps + systems. (44:30) The Lightroom plugin to automatically sync to the cloud. Sam talks more about it here. He loves using DaVinci Resolve for video editing.  Predictions for the photography industry.(55:30) We also cover live view shooting, mirrorless focusing technology, and composition. The industry is continually changing – technology is advancing so fast. The appeal of film is also covered as there’s something to be said about the limitations. Real talk about productivity and daily structure… His strategy is to work a lot and relax a lot. (1:03:30) He uses due dates to help him, but embraces the flow of flexibility. “People seem really fixed on a golden pathway to be productive. I relax a lot and I work a lot. It comes in two big bursts.” As photography turns from a hobby to a profession, it’s important to still have a hobby. Photographers need a hobby. This man is a true genius in making sure that all of his couples walk away with their own “album cover” picture. With his love for music and love for photography, its almost as though they made a baby and out pops Sams artistic work in creating things that look impossible. I had the privilege to get to attend one of his workshop back in 2015 and I feel like from then on my photography went up to a whole new level. This week is an experimental episode. After shooting a wedding together, on the drive home, Steve and Jenn recorded an episode of Wedding Photo Hangover. They walk listeners through the itinerary for the day of the wedding and talk about problems that arose and how they problem solved. Since they are using mobile recording equipment in a noisy environment, the audio isn't quite as good as usual, but we feel that the content more than makes up for that. I went to school for graphic design and focused on photography. My main passion is video though so my other company is a video production company called Re-Peet Productions. In order to do things online, I knew I wanted to have a decent website so I taught myself how to build websites. Because I have done so much in the creative field I have met a lot of creative people and I have developed a passion for helping them whenever I can. I get a weird joy out of teaching people something they didn’t know before that helps them with their business or their creative goals! I tried starting this podcast before under a different name but after creating a logo and designing most of the website I discovered a company that had a very similar name so after much deliberation and talking with my friend Omar over at the $100 MBA I decided to change the name, brand, and everything else about the podcast. This set me back and I really took a blow to moral. I had built this up and was telling everyone about it and then it was just nothing. I took everything down and couldn’t find the drive to start over again. It sat in the back of my mind for 4 months and I decided it was time to do it. I came up with a name, a logo, started working on a site. I am self-aware enough to know that I don’t like releasing something until it’s perfect and that has held me back too much in the past so I decided to go ahead and start scheduling interviews. I reached out to Sam Hurd (episode 001!) on April 27th, 2016 and we set a time to record on May 5th. 8 days away I had my first podcast interview and I wasn’t ready, it was great! I remember the nerves I felt before getting on the call with Sam but it was a great feeling because I was acting instead of planning. From that first recording, I haven’t looked back, scheduling interviews and fixing my plane as I fly it. Sam Hurd began his photography career six years ago at the National Press Club and has photographed many notable individuals, such as George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Alec Baldwin, and Michael Phelps. He began photographing weddings four years ago and left the National Press Club to pursue wedding photography full-time.   He is constantly developing new techniques with his photography and publicly shares many of those techniques with other photographers. Sam developed a technique known as prisming, broke a few lenses to push freelensing to new extremes, and has a few new surprises in store for 2017. He's a photographer that is always trying to grow and wants to see other photographers grow as well
