Send us a textOn today's podcast, we're joined by Rev. Kelly Dignan. In 2017, Rev. Dignan advocated for, and led her congregation – the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder, Colorado – to become a sanctuary congregation, housing a Peruvian refugee mother and her children. Today's conversation will focus on the resurgence of the Sanctuary Church Movement during the past 10 years, and how this influenced the Unitarian Universalist Church – Boulder to open up their building as a sanctuary space. We will also discuss the difficulties involved with a congregation making the complicated decision to become a Sanctuary Church as well as the victories, joys, and celebrations involved with being a Sanctuary Congregation. The production of "Bottle Rocket" in 1996 marked the auspicious debut of director Wes Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson, both of whom would go on to become prominent figures in American independent cinema. The project began as a short film of the same name in 1994, which caught the attention of producer James L. Brooks. Impressed by Anderson and Wilson's unique vision and comedic sensibilities, Brooks provided the funding needed to expand the short into a feature-length film. This financial backing allowed them to assemble a talented cast, including Owen Wilson, his brother Luke Wilson, and Robert Musgrave, who would portray the film's quirky trio of friends. The film was shot on a modest budget over the course of 40 days in and around Dallas, Texas, where Anderson and Wilson grew up. Anderson's distinctive visual style and attention to detail were evident even in his debut, and his collaboration with cinematographer Robert Yeoman helped create the film's distinct look. The production faced challenges due to the limited budget, but Anderson's ability to work creatively within these constraints helped shape the unique tone and humor of "Bottle Rocket." The film's release in 1996 garnered critical acclaim for its quirky characters, deadpan humor, and indie sensibilities, establishing Anderson and Wilson as talents to watch in the world of filmmaking. In this episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast, I'm joined by director, writer, co-producer, co-cinematographer, editor and visual effects supervisor Jack Dignan to discuss his latest film, Puzzle Box. Jack began his career as an Australian film journalist, publishing written reviews across multiple platforms while working on his own DIY short films. In the lead up to After She Died, Jack spent some time working on high-profile Hollywood productions such as Thor: Love and Thunder, Furiosa, Elvis, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in various roles. Puzzle Box follows substance abuser Kait who flees to a house in the woods to self-rehabilitate, while her sister Olivia joins to document the process. Following their arrival the house's layout begins to change, trapping them inside an inescapable puzzle box. When I interview a filmmaker like Jack, I'm quickly reminded why I started Cinema Australia. To me, there's nothing quite like interviewing an independent filmmaker at the beginning of their career. Hearing Jack's stories about the making of his two films was a great thrill for me and I can't thank Jack enough for being a part of this Podcast. Anyway… enjoy.

Olivia aims to document the process, almost in a way to show how far Kait will heal and change. This is the second time that Jack has had a film screen at the festival, with his previous film After She Died winning the Best Australian Feature Film and Best Australian Feature Performance in 2022. Jack talks about where his interest in found footage films comes from, how working on films like Marvel's Shang-Chi and George Miller's Furiosa differs from working on an independent feature film, as well as how his previous work as a film critic informs his work as a director. And we're on to the film that launched Wes Anderson's directing career! Starring real-life brothers Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson as non-brothers Anthony and Dignan, two friends who commit felonies for fun, along with Robert Musgrave as their friend Bob and real-life third Wilson brother Andrew Wilson as Bob's in-movie brother Future Man and returning Aug-Heist con man James Caan, this caper was made for $5 million but only grossed about $500,000. Nevertheless, critics did take note, with Martin Scorcese going so far as to call it one of his favorite films of the decade. Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's newest Countdown miniseries: the Wes Anderson Countdown. To honor one of the great still-working indie writer-director auteurs, who's next film ASTEROID CITY comes out later this year, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be watching all 10 of the American filmmakers' works to-date, from his origins with the '90s heist-comedy BOTTLE ROCKET, all the way to his latest feature, 2021's star-studded anthology drama THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Join us each week over the next 10 weeks as we progress through Anderson's full oeuvre in the buildup to ASTEROID CITY!     On the first episode of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay start their journey in 1996 with Anderson's feature-length directorial debut BOTTLE ROCKET. Directed by Anderson and co-written by Anderson with mutli-hyphenate Owen Wilson, who also stars with his brother Luke Wilson in the film as Dignan and Anthony respectively, BOTTLE ROCKET follows Dignan and Anthony's execution of the former's overly intricate '75-Year Plan' to pull off a series of heists and become career criminals alongside a small-time criminal known to Dignan, Mr. Henry (James Caan). Dignan and Anthony's plans start with practice heists - to mixed success - and recruiting a getaway driver, Bob (Robert Musgrave), but as the trio get deeper and deeper into their plans, their ineptitude may just be their downfall. The countdown crew give their thoughts on Anderson's first outing, including early indications of Anderson's writing and directing styles, the performances of the cast, and the effectiveness of Anderson's take of blending comedy and drama.

About the book What's stopping us from doing the best work of our lives? It's the way we work. Bureaucracy. Hierarchy. Compliance. Everything that slows us down and makes us feel less human. Our organizations are broken. And we can fix them. Aaron Dignan helps teams around the world completely reinvent their operating systems—the fundamental principles and practices that shape their culture—with extraordinary success. He helps them see that organizations aren't machines to be predicted and controlled. They're complex human systems full of potential waiting to be released. In Brave New Work, you'll learn exactly how to reinvent the way you work, not through top-down mandates, but through a groundswell of autonomy, trust, and transparency. Source: https://www.bravenewwork.com/   About the author Aaron Dignan sees the same phenomenon everywhere he looks. Our most trusted and important institutions—in business, healthcare, government, philanthropy, and beyond – are struggling. They're confronted with the fact that the scale and bureaucracy that once made them strong are liabilities in an era of constant change. For the past ten years, he has studied organizations and teams with a new way of working that prioritizes adaptivity and autonomy over efficiency and control. Aaron contends that teams everywhere need to join them in the future of work. As the founder of The Ready—a global organizational transformation and coaching practice—he helps companies large and small adopt new forms of self-organization and dynamic teaming. Other resources Read more on these topics in these Writers Workshop articles: Responding to Student Writing Teaching Linguistically Diverse Writers Preventing Plagiarism Episode Summary This episode delves into writing—specifically, how instructors can help students improve. Who better to weigh in than Carolyn Wisniewski, Director of the Writer's Workshop, which supports members of the campus community in all stages of their writing through consultations, presentations, and writing groups, and Lucas Anderson, a CITL Specialist in Education, who trains instructors and runs the biannual Graduate Academy, which trains all incoming graduate teaching assistants. As host Bob Dignan points out, evaluating student writing and offering constructive criticism can be both time consuming and challenging. How can instructors do this effectively and efficiently? In this episode, Dignan and his guests touch on many aspects from students' struggles and successes in their writing to effective evaluation strategies to the importance of offering constructive criticism to teaching the fundamentals while recognizing students' linguistic diversity and respecting their backgrounds. Anderson shares a technique he learned from Wisniewski: Read through the entire paper, summarize comments at the end—including the best thing and something that needs improvement in the next draft—and if there's time, make limited comments in the margin to address specific errors. “This notion of summarizing it at the end and really distilling the main message as kind of the primary thing I hope they look at has really helped me,” says Anderson, who uses the technique when helping graduate students craft their teaching philosophy statement. “In my field, we teach HOCs before LOCs,” adds Wisniewski, who wants instructors to focus on higher order concerns (e.g., do students understand the assignment and does the paper have structure) then move on to the lower order concerns (e.g., grammar and syntax) during the revision process.
