It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

The common wisdom we're taught when starting up a business is, “Solve a problem that needs solving.” But the truly exceptional success stories of our time have not followed this advice. When Coca Cola came along, nobody who was enjoying a long, cool glass of lemonade was clamoring for a sweet, syrupy, brown drink. When Uber came along people weren't fantasizing about getting into a car with a total stranger. And when Jeff Bezos started selling books online, nobody in their right mind would give their credit card number to a person they didn't know on the world wide web. At the end of the day, it wasn't Bezos' ability as a salesman that convinced people to trust Amazon, it was the invention of a piece of software called “encryption” that made it safer to give your credit card to Amazon than to a server in a restaurant. Today there are other online companies poised to capitalize on the next technological change to e-commerce. One of those is a local startup called Cucuron, an online art gallery based in New Orleans, founded by Megan Manning.  You might ask, “How many people are going to pay $2,000 for a piece of artwork based on a photo on a phone?” Maybe not a whole lot, but… When augmented reality and virtual reality become a part of our device's operating system – which they definitely will at some point – looking at a piece of art online will be exactly, in every way, like looking at a piece of art on the wall in a gallery. Whether or not Cucuron becomes the Amazon of art is unknowable. But it's building the architecture ready for the day when buying art online is as second-nature as buying the shoes, furniture, and mattresses people at one point said they would never buy online. Over 55% of e-commerce shoppers say the reason they buy online is, “home delivery.” Maybe it's the legacy of the pandemic, maybe it's the influence of Gen Z., but more of our lives these days seem to be home-centric. Very few New Orleanians know more about the many notions of “home” than Kristin Palmer. Kristin was Executive Director of an organization called Rebuilding Together. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Kristin led over 10,000 volunteers who rebuilt hurricane-damaged structures so New Orleanians could come home. In 2010 Kristin was elected to the New Orleans City Council. She represented District C which includes the French Quarter, the Marigny, Treme, Bywater and Algiers. In 2014 she founded Bargeboard, a home renovation and restoration company whose goal is to keep Old Algiers affordable and accessible through historic renovation, recycling and reuse. Bargeboard is a culmination of a lifetime of Kristin's New Orleans-centric personal and professional passions. In the 1940's, Abraham Maslow, a psychology professor, came up with a pyramid-shape explanation of human existence which has come to be known as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. On the bottom level of the pyramid are the most basic needs, including shelter – a home. At the top is something Maslow called Self Actualization, which includes creativity, like producing art. Maslow's interpretation of human existence has become a foundational teaching in understanding human motivation and behavior. But, if any place on earth was to challenge Maslow's conventional wisdom, it would be New Orleans. Here, our homes are of course vital, but an equally vital part of our lives - that makes New Orleans New Orleans - is music, beauty, and art. So, although both Megan's and Kristin's businesses – Bargeboard and Cucuron – theoretically represent the extreme poles of human existence, our lived experience here in New Orleans rates them as equally essential to our everyday lives. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

This is a special edition of Out to Lunch: New Orleans At The Crossroads. We've been at the crossroads before. If we wanted to list every economic boom and bust cycle in New Orleans, we could go back to the very first flood. In 1719. When Bienville was still building the first settlements. We survived that one. And we've survived other attempts at devastation. Most recently, after 2005, we did way more than just bounce back from Hurricane Katrina. The restoration of the city resulted in a massive economic boom. And, for the first time in around 40 years, a net migration gain. In what could only be described as a shocking surprise to those of us living here, New Orleans went from being a place you left if you wanted any sort of a high-achieving career, to a place where young, smart, entrepreneurial people moved to, to start a business. The city changed markedly. We started discussing issues we'd never had to confront before. Gentrification. Cost of living increases. Prohibitive rents. Property tax hikes. Before we knew it, we had more restaurants than we had before the hurricane. A couple of years ago, the city came up with a more accurate way of counting how many tourists were coming here - and discovered it's way more than they had thought. The real number of tourists is around 19 million a year. Things, it seemed, couldn't have been going much better for New Orleans. Then, one day, in March 2020, all that came to a sudden stop. Apparently thanks to Mardi Gras, a month earlier, New Orleans had unknowingly become a hotspot for the novel Corona virus, Covid 19. We went into a mode called, “lockdown.” Which was kind of like voluntary house arrest. At first, it didn't seem too bad - even for businesses who had to temporarily close their doors. But, what was going to be a few weeks of semi-vacation, where those who could worked from home, and those who couldn't collected more money in unemployment insurance than they were making at work, has turned into something else. Months later, the 19 million tourists are gone. And we don't know when, or if, they will ever come back in the numbers we knew before. Entrepreneurs are struggling to survive. Many small businesses that have managed to reopen are making do with significantly less revenue, and are forced to lay off staff. Under occupational restrictions, and because of people's continued fear of catching the virus, restaurants are starving for business. Some notable restaurants are already closed for good. Unemployment is at a historic high. And our world-famous live music industry is shut down. So, what are we going to do? We can cross our fingers and hope that everything eventually bounces back, like it has every other time we've had a disaster for the past 300 years. Or, Plan B - we can use the enormous amount of talent and resources that the last dilemma delivered to us on the crest of the migration and economic wave, and proactively take action to change the direction of the city so that we can cope with, and even capitalize on, the new reality. And that, Plan B, is what Peter Ricchiuti is putting into action on this special edition of Out to Lunch. Peter has assembled a panel of New Orleans business owners and thought leaders who are all impacted by the pandemic. All the members of this panel are invested in grappling with the realities of what the city will need to do to survive this immediate crisis, and are unafraid to tackle questions about the bigger structural issues that have gotten us to this position, on the precipice of a potential and real disaster one of them describes as a coming “Hellscape.”  Graison Gill is the owner of Bellegarde Bakery. Until the end of July 2020, when it was forced to close, hopefully temporarily, Bellegarde operated a local retail bakery. It also shipped flour, grits and pasta nationwide. And provided products to more than 120 restaurants. In 2020 Graison Gill was a finalist for the James Beard Award - the Academy Awards of food - for Outstanding Baker. Eric Cook is a combat veteran who served six years in the United States Marine Corps. After his military career, Eric returned to his native New Orleans and became a chef. Eric has cooked at some of New Orleans' finest restaurants, including Commander's Palace. Until July of 2020 when it was forced to close, hopefully temporarily, Eric was owner and Executive Chef at his own restaurant, Gris Gris, in the Lower Garden District.   Carol Markowitz is COO and Senior Vice President of Finance at Loyola University. Carol was previously the Founding Executive Director of NOCHI, New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute, she's worked in corporate finance in Los Angeles and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. Matt Wisdom is founder and CEO of New Orleans-based Turbosquid. Turbosquid is the Amazon.com of 3d models. It's the world's leading marketplace for the type of 3D models used in everything from movies and video games to commercials and teaching tools. Holly Devon is a writer, Senior Editor at Antigravity Magazine, and founding editor of The Iron Lattice, a New Orleans quarterly arts publication. Holly has written extensively about tourism and urban planning in New Orleans. Kristin Giselson Palmer is a member of the New Orleans City Council, representing District C, which includes Algiers, the French Quarter, the Marigny, Treme, St. Roch and Bywater neighborhoods.  If you're looking for the usual platitudes about how things are all going to be great delivered in biz-speak by the usual suspects, this conversation is not that. This is an honest assessment of where we are, where we're going, and how we're going to get there, from the minds of people who know what they're talking about, and the lived experience of people whose lives and livelihoods depend on the decisions we make about the direction of the City of New Orleans. Guest Dan Gonzalez, Dartmouth '96, left college most concerned with keeping his options open. In the pursuit of breadth, he dabbled in everything from health care consulting and after-school drama programs for kids, and even considered med school.  But then he heeded the oft-proffered advice to "follow your passion," realized music-making had been a source of earlier joy, and enrolled in a song-writing program at Berklee College of Music. To make ends meet, he had been tutoring at a test prep company and got hooked  into an industry he'd never considered through the power of one uniquely-run company.  It ended up changing the way he thought about passion, purpose, and the value of finding work that feeds you.In this episode, find out from Dan the difference between "following your passion" and "following your purpose…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley About This Episode's GuestDan Gonzalez is co-founder (with his wife Anne Jones, Dartmouth '97) of District C, a not-for-profit that empowers schools and teachers to teach high school students how to collaborate with diverse peers to solve real-world business problems. It's no secret that today's workforce is experiencing a gap in the talent pipeline and in-demand skill development. A 2019 survey of 600 HR leaders showed that 64% perceive a skills gap in their company, a surprising increase from 52% in last year's survey. As companies scramble to address recruitment strategies and the upskilling and reskilling of employees, a growing body of educators and entrepreneurs are turning their attention to K12 students, well before they enter college or the workforce. One of these change-makers is Anne Jones, who, along with her husband Dan Gonzalez, founded District C, a non-profit that aims to build a "new kind of talent pipeline" by giving students the greatest lever to long-term success: the ability to leverage the talents of diverse teams to solve complex problems. District C works with local businesses to provide student teams with real challenges that they’re currently facing, and then empowers student teams to deliver an actionable solution to the business (which 94% of businesses actually use!). In 2016, the Institute for Emerging Issues looked at the future economy and tried to figure out the kinds and numbers of jobs that were likely to go away over the next 20 years in every corner of the state and the answer appears to be 25% overall. That is one in every four jobs in North Carolina that is likely to disappear by 2040, as technology and artificial intelligence replaces the jobs humans used to be able to do. As IEI noted in our FurtureWork report, that means the way we educate people is going to need to change if they are going to find the next set of jobs. That is why we are talking to this week’s First in Future guest, Dan Gonzalez, the co-founder of District C. It is a new education-focused startup that focuses on helping high school students, our future workforce, discover how to work together on diverse teams to solve complex problems for businesses in the Triangle.
