This week on Wolves Unpacked, we kick things off with Strand Larsen's outstanding performance against Southampton, where his two-goal display secured a vital three points. We then turn our attention to Bellegarde, whose growing influence in midfield was on full display as he provided two assists, finding form at this crucial point in the season. André also takes centre stage in our discussion as we break down his role as the heartbeat of the team, driving Wolves forward with his tireless work rate. Also, don't miss Pereira revealing his unique post-match ritual of joining the fans for a pie and pint! Episode 296 of The Wolves 77 Club dives into Wolves' latest performances, with Sam, Harry, and Jack breaking down a hard-fought draw against Everton and a crucial away win at Southampton. With Matheus Cunha missing, Wolves had to find new attacking solutions, and the team discusses whether they did enough against Everton and how Bellegarde's growing influence continues to make a difference. The conversation shifts to Southampton, where Strand Larsen stepped up in style, scoring twice to secure an important victory. His performances have divided opinions throughout the season, but was this the moment he proved his doubters wrong? Jack, the self-appointed chairman of the Strand Larsen fan club, certainly thinks so. With Ipswich and Leicester dropping points, talk turns to whether Wolves have effectively secured their Premier League survival. Jack makes a bold statement about the club's future, but will it come back to haunt him? Meanwhile, transfer speculation is in full swing as the guys discuss potential summer moves, including whether a return for Diogo Jota or Conor Coady is realistic. The England squad announcement also sparks debate, with frustration over Thomas Tuchel's selections. Harry is particularly unimpressed, questioning some of the call-ups and sharing his thoughts on what the squad should really look like. As always, the episode is filled with nostalgia, laughter, and even a bizarre footballing mix-up from Bulgaria that you won't believe. Learn more about your ad choices. Mikey Burrows and Andy Thompson are full of praise for Jorgen Strand Larsen who scored twice to beat bottom team Southampton, plus thoughts on Bellegarde's assist and whether Goncalo Guedes has done enough to make the starting line up. Another week, another refereeing controversy. The lads break down Wolves' frustrating 2-1 defeat at Anfield, where Simon Hooper's performance stole the headlines. From questionable bookings to a baffling penalty call (and non-call), Wolves were up against 12 men - but still managed to push Liverpool to the brink. They discuss the standout second-half performance, Vítor Pereira's tactical tweaks, and the impact of Munetsi and Bellegarde. The debate rages on about whether Wolves should have taken all three points and whether Agbadou's injury exposes squad depth issues—was leaving Craig Dawson out of the squad a mistake? Also on the agenda: Bournemouth preview, the worst Premier League club badges and the growing problem of away end ‘tourist fans'. Subscribe, tune in, and share your thoughts! Mikey Burrows and Andy Thompson vent their frustration at a number of key decisions that went against Wolves as Vitor Pereira's side lost 2-1 at Anfield. But there is praise for Bellegarde, Doherty and Andre who re the main three in the running for Thommo's player of the match Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In this episode of The Wolves 77 Club, Sam, Harry, and Jack break down Wolves' thrilling victory over Aston Villa under the lights at Molineux. The lads discuss standout performances, including the surprise hero Bellegarde, tactical decisions by Vítor Pereira, and the tense second half that left fans on the edge of their seats. The January transfer window takes center stage as the team reacts to Wolves' late business, signing Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi, while saying goodbye to Mario Lemina. Was it a successful window? And what about those wild rumors surrounding a potential Conor Coady return? Looking ahead, the FA Cup clash against Blackburn is on the horizon. Should Wolves take it seriously, or is Premier League survival the priority? Plus, the funniest story of the week—how a Nottingham pub gave away 300 pints after Forest's goal fest, and a surprising stat about pubs near Premier League stadiums. Federal prosecutors have attempted to tie Indigenous political prisoner Leonard Peltier to the murder of fellow AIM activist, Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash. It is a frequent allegation that has relied on weak evidence and the charges of paid federal informants. In this episode, TRN Podcast co-host Nick Estes (@nickwestes) looks at several sources of information from key Indigenous activists who knew Leonard Peltier and Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash to the FBI's own knowledge of her murder at the time it happened and federal prosecutors' initial hesitancy to take up the case. Power our work here: www.patreon.com/redmediapr ------ Below is the text of Hank Adams' 2020 Facebook post, shortly before his passing: Note: Adams is responding to a 2016 APTN article in which Assembly of First Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde apologizes to Anna Mae Aquash's family. December 14, 2020 Intellectually dishonest hate-monger Paul DeMain has reignited his campaign to assure denial of any Executive Clemency to LEONARD PELTIER, 76, at any time before Leonard's next scheduled Parole Hearing in Year 2024 with a continued misuse and abuse of the December 1975 gunshot death of ANNA MAE AQUASH and the unconscionable exploitation of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash's children. Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde makes significant points in this 2016 article in which the 1975 Aquash death became the center point in President Barack Obama's decision to deny Clemency to Peltier: “I regret that my statement caused some hurt and pain and I apologize for the pain I caused her [Denise Maloney Pictou] and her family,” said Bellegarde. “That wasn't my intent.” Bellegarde said he still would like to see Peltier freed. He said the case is a separate issue from AIM's execution of Aquash. “I called for that (Peltier's release) because there is an injustice there,” said Bellegarde. “So I will continue to advocate for that.” Bellegarde said two previous AFN national chiefs have made the same call which is also backed by Amnesty International and prominent individuals like the Dalai Lama. Peltier was extradited from Canada to the U.S. in December 1976. Warren Allmand, Canada's solicitor general at the time of Peltier's extradition, has since stated the F.B.I submitted false information to have Peltier extradited." DeMain's posting of Aquash daughter Denise Maloney Pictou's December 12, 2020, renewed accusations against Leonard Peltier and DeMain's hated AIM organization [re-Posted here in Comment 1] are the beginning of a campaign to assure that 2020 President-Elect Joe Biden will not grant Executive Clemency to Leonard Peltier. In death and posthumously, Anna Mae has been made a sainted heroine. But between 1972 and November 14, 1975, Anna Mae's ways were AIM's ways. AIM's ways - good and bad - were without qualification or reservation Anna Mae's ways, by choice. At NCAI in November, American Indian Press Association's (AIPA) Richard LaCourse told me of his meeting with Dennis Banks, Leonard Peltier, Kamook Banks, and Anna Mae just before his coming to Portland for NCAI.. Anna Mae then had indicated no distress nor given any indication that she was being held prisoner or against her will. On November 14, 1975, the four AIM "leaders" only broke apart because of the Ontario, Oregon stopping of their [Marlon Brando] recreational vehicle by armed Oregon police. A couple days later, Leonard Peltier was transported (through Franks Landing) from Portland into British Columbia (by associates of mine, who did not inform me then of their activity). He spent the next month in the locale he was taken to and remained incommunicado with U.S. colleagues until later, at least until he traveled to Small Boy's camp in Alberta, Canada. That is where the RCMP and FBI picked up on Leonard - long after Anna Mae Aquash's death in the second week of December 1975. Memorandum in the FBI's Denver Office dated as early as December 19, 1975 disclosed Anna Mae Aquash had been killed - although the FBI would feign ignorance of the death and the corpse identity for more than the next three months. The December 1975 memos identified the killers as John "Boy" Graham, Arlo Looking Cloud, and Theda Nelson Clarke - although none of the three were indicted through the next 28 years. The Looking Cloud trial was held in December 2004; Graham's in 2010 - lapses of 29 and 35 years. Theda Nelson - a likely FBI Informant in December 1975 - (on mental competency findings) did not go to trial. Clark died at age 87 in 2011. Although a lead prosecutor opened the Leonard Peltier trial in Fargo, North Dakota on March 16, 1977 declaring: "AIM is not on trial."; both AIM and Leonard Peltier were made the main 'defendants' in the 2004 and 2010 trials for the killing of Anna Mae Aquash! If there was ever a case where all parties - prosecution, defense and all witnesses - acted in friendly collusion to 'convict' undefended and absent non-parties [1st Leonard Peltier; 2nd AIM] - the Looking Cloud and Graham trials were such cases. The fodder for the trial's conspiratorial claptrap largely was wrung from the mind and imagination of Paul DeMain in his relentless vendetta against AIM leaders and most creatively against Leonard Peltier. Many of his unsubstantiated claims were rejected by author Steven Hendricks when writing "The Unquiet Grave" (2007). DeMain "Timelines" for Anna Mae Pictou have since focused on the AIM Convention in New Mexico just prior to the Jumping Bull Compound deaths of FBI Agents on Pine Ridge on June 26, 1975 leading to the 1977 life sentence convictions of Peltier. The design is intended to prejudice considerations against any grant of parole or clemency for Peltier. Canada's Assembly of First Nation is correct in declaring the "execution" of Anna Mae Aquash and the pursuit of "freedom" for Leonard Peltier on compassionate and humanitarian grounds are "separate issues." They are correct in continuing their support for Executive Clemency through offices of both the Canadian Prime Minister and any U.S. President. What satisfaction can President Elect Biden derive from side-stepping all humanitarian and compassionate considerations for Leonard Peltier through a first term, deferring any favorable consideration to the scheduled Parole Hearing in 2024? The Pardons Office of a bureaucratic and prejudiced Justice Department housing the FBI has already failed the last four Presidents of the United States in this matter! Will retribution finally end if Leonard Peltier is still alive in 2024 and then 80 years old? Indians of Western Washington who transported Leonard Peltier to Canada on or about November 17, 1975, and Indians of British Columbia who hosted and concealed him for the next month or until beyond when the FBI first was informed of Anna Mae's death and the identity of her killers can attest to Leonard's movements and communications (record) that wholly absolve Leonard Peltier of any direct or indirect role in the December 1975 murder of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash.
The match between Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers concluded in a 1-1 draw, reflecting a game that was described as even, with moments of entertainment interspersed with periods that felt like a grind. Here's a detailed overview based on the sentiments and observations from X posts: Match Dynamics: The game was characterized by its stop-start nature, partly due to the referee's decisions which didn't seem to favour a smooth flow. Wolves appeared content with securing a point, especially considering their defensive vulnerabilities noted at halftime. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, showed moments of dominance but also frustration, particularly with a disallowed goal and missed opportunities. Key Moments and Performances: Nottingham Forest: Chris Wood's goal was pivotal for Forest, proving once again his importance in front of goal. The team's performance was highlighted by some slick passing and good link-ups across the pitch. Murillo was singled out for an "insanely good" performance, suggesting a strong defensive display from him despite the team's general defensive lapses. The team's set pieces were notably taken by E. Anderson and Elanga, indicating tactical choices in dead ball situations. Wolverhampton Wanderers: Wolves managed to equalize through Bellegarde, with an assist from Mario Jr., showing their capability to threaten on the counter or through set plays. However, their overall performance was described as quiet with the exception of some early chances, particularly from Nouri who played very advanced. The team's pressing and quick transitions were noted in earlier games, suggesting a style that could disrupt opponents but didn't fully materialize in this match. Tactical Insights: Wolves seemed to adopt a more cautious approach, possibly due to their early season form where securing points might be prioritized over chasing wins. Forest, while showing attacking intent, struggled with converting chances into goals, which could be a recurring theme they need to address. Fan and Analyst Sentiment: There was a mix of satisfaction and frustration among Forest fans, with the clean sheet being a positive despite the draw. Wolves fans and analysts might see this result as a step in the right direction, especially if they were looking to stabilize after previous games where they looked open at the back. Overall: The match was a tactical battle with both teams showing moments of quality but also revealing areas for improvement, particularly in defence for Wolves and in clinical finishing for Forest. The draw might be seen as a fair result given the ebb and flow of the game, with neither team able to assert complete dominance. #nffc #wolves #premierleague Learn more about your ad choices. It's September 20th. It's the latest episode of our 5th season, welcome dear listener. I'm Paul joined by Justin and Daz. We are here to look at the Wolves game, mention the LASK game and look ahead to West Ham at home. Thanks for joining us. Part One - game of two halves Brian: How bad was the first half? ‘Plumbed the depths' said James Pearce. Defense had a few bad moments OR was it overall a bad performance Quansah had some good moments ‘Terrific stuff by Wolves' said the commentator at 10 - once again it felt like a few moments. After 20, it felt mostly us to me. Various attempts to have Gomez play the Trent role. Obviously wasn't effective Mac Allister - why did he play? I counted 7 giveaways. Card was super soft. Wolves tactics - after what they and Gary O'Neill did last year, I assume we expected a low block. Neto is very good (Wolves tried to find him at every opportunity - once we cut the supply, it was a very different game) and Bellegarde looks a handful (first game, played 128 games at Strasbourg). The good parts were very good: xG 0.54 to 2.83 (according to Understat). Didn't include the Cuhna miss at 34 minutes. Darwin is an absolute handful Salah (leads the league in big chances created (6)), Szoboszlai, Matip and Gomez front foot defending kept Wolves penned in the second half. Predictions? Part Two - Elsewhere and LASK Bad news for Everton - Burnley looked OK at Forest Chelsea continues to look like a team of strangers (happy for it to continue) Man United crisis - the backdrop shows an absence of ethical compass, the foreground shows a collection of mismatched players - Rashford and Fernandes are less effective at pressing than Weghorst, Ronaldo and Elanga. Champions League first round just started - Europa League tomorrow and hopefully the road to Dublin - any takeaways? League Cup against Leicester who are 2nd in the Championship and have only lost one game. Part Three - Home to West Ham They have looked better this season than last - what does that tell us about Declan Rice? Three wins, a draw at Bournemouth and a defeat against City. They've won at Brighton and Luton. Less than 72 hours after LASK but not the biggest concern Everyone available? Formation. Predictions? We will be back with a review of the West Ham game and a preview of the Spurs game (and LASK). Thanks to Daz and Justin for joining me. In Fragments of Bone, thirteen essayists discuss African religions as forms of resistance and survival in the face of Western cultural hegemony and imperialism. The collection presents scholars working outside of the Western tradition with backgrounds in a variety of disciplines, genders, and nationalities. These experts draw on research, fieldwork, personal interviews, and spiritual introspection to support a provocative thesis: that fragments of ancestral traditions are fluidly interwoven into New World African religions as creolized rituals, symbolic systems, and cultural identities. Contributors: Osei-Mensah Aborampah, Niyi Afolabi, Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, Randy P. Conner, T. J. Desch-Obi, Ina Johanna Fandrich, Kean Gibson, Marilyn Houlberg, Nancy B. Mikelsons, Roberto Nodal, Rafael Ocasio, Miguel "Willie" Ramos, and Denise Ferreira da Silva Reviews "Takes the reader to a deeper and broader understanding of Afro-Caribbean traditions than we have had before. . . . The cumulative effect of this unusual collection moves religions such as Vodou, Santeria, Palo, and Candomblé out of the realm of the exotic and into a merited position among progressive religious alternatives in the contemporary world."--Karen McCarthy Brown, author of Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn "Impeccably researched, persuasively argued, and engagingly written. . . . This is the most comprehensive, creative collection available, and should become the standard text for courses on the subject in the United States and abroad."--Richard Brent Turner, University of Iowa "This is a rare and important work. Fragments of Bone makes major progress toward reconstructing and rehabilitating historically subjugated indigenous spirituality. It is innovative, informative, and of the utmost significance."--Claudine Michel, author of Aspects Moraux et Educatifs du Vodou Haitien About our Guest Patrick Bellegarde-Smith is professor emeritus of Africology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Get your goat: So you want to move to the country and raise goats - A podcast about change
Quotes about change: "Take time to take a breath and find a sense of self, place, and resilience."Leanne Bellegarde is from Treaty 4 territory in south Saskatchewan and grew up in the northern community of Meadow Lake. She tells us that she never grew up wanting to be a lawyer. As a young Indigenous woman, she never saw lawyers who were Indigenous women – it's true that you become what you see. Looking back she is grateful to her many supporters and mentors including those who encouraged her to study Law. Leanne practiced law and is proud to have worked with the Government of Canada on the Treaty Land Entitlement Agreement. She held a number of corporate positions and took a position to make changes from within the organization on Indigenous inclusion. When she left Potash Corp/Nutrien, she took some time to reflect and was very deliberate about deciding what was next for her. Leanne describes the ways and techniques she used to get her to where she is today and the recognition that she is enough. Leanne talks about her roots, retribution, reconciliation and reflection.
Gabrielle d'Estrées, a woman known more for her risque painting than of her life itself. Gabrielle was born around 1573, and daughter of Antoine d'Estrées, Baron de Boulonnois and Françoise de la Bourdaisieres. She was one of eleven children, seven of which were girls and gave them the moniker “seven deadly sins” by the Marquis de Sevigné.Gabrielle mingled in the court of Henri III and where she met Roger de Bellegarde who was close with Henri III and Henri IV. On the occasion that Roger was meeting with Henri IV, Gabrielle was spotted at court, and Henri was instantly obsessed. For six months he chased her and she resisted until she finally gave in. Henri IV did not hide his relationship or the love he had for Gabrielle, even in the midst of trying to get his marriage to Marguerite de Valois annulled. To keep her close at court he orchestrated a marriage between Gabrielle and Nicolas d'Amerval on June 8, 1592. To thank him for his role, Nicolas was given the title of Baron de Benais. Henri was eager to end the marriage with Marguerite and to marry Gabrielle and asked Pope Clement VIII to dissolve his marriage. Clement had his own ideas and wanted Henri to marry his niece, Marie de Medici, and was slow-moving on giving Henri what he wanted. Always by his side, Gabrielle was instrumental in helping to end the many religious conflicts and converting Henri to Catholicism in 1593. However, she wasn't loved by the people who called her the “duchess of garbage” and attacked her spending. Nonetheless, she sat next to Henri on his triumphant return to Paris later that same year. Henri had every intention to marry her and presented her with his coronation ring in front of the court. A painting that is sure to always catch the visitor's eye is the presumed portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and her sister the Duchess of Villars. Originally from New-York, Alessandro is an Italian film-maker who has made his home in Kyoto for the last decade. Where his roots may lie in the classic cinematography style, in more recent years, he has left his mark in the burgeoning field of VR 360 film-making. Alessandro describes his work as a double act of translation: that of the medium in which he creates and connectively the Japanese content that comprises the majority of his work. He creates bridges to the past with a genuinely modern approach.

This is a special edition of Out to Lunch: New Orleans At The Crossroads. We've been at the crossroads before. If we wanted to list every economic boom and bust cycle in New Orleans, we could go back to the very first flood. In 1719. When Bienville was still building the first settlements. We survived that one. And we've survived other attempts at devastation. Most recently, after 2005, we did way more than just bounce back from Hurricane Katrina. The restoration of the city resulted in a massive economic boom. And, for the first time in around 40 years, a net migration gain. In what could only be described as a shocking surprise to those of us living here, New Orleans went from being a place you left if you wanted any sort of a high-achieving career, to a place where young, smart, entrepreneurial people moved to, to start a business. The city changed markedly. We started discussing issues we'd never had to confront before. Gentrification. Cost of living increases. Prohibitive rents. Property tax hikes. Before we knew it, we had more restaurants than we had before the hurricane. A couple of years ago, the city came up with a more accurate way of counting how many tourists were coming here - and discovered it's way more than they had thought. The real number of tourists is around 19 million a year. Things, it seemed, couldn't have been going much better for New Orleans. Then, one day, in March 2020, all that came to a sudden stop. Apparently thanks to Mardi Gras, a month earlier, New Orleans had unknowingly become a hotspot for the novel Corona virus, Covid 19. We went into a mode called, “lockdown.” Which was kind of like voluntary house arrest. At first, it didn't seem too bad - even for businesses who had to temporarily close their doors. But, what was going to be a few weeks of semi-vacation, where those who could worked from home, and those who couldn't collected more money in unemployment insurance than they were making at work, has turned into something else. Months later, the 19 million tourists are gone. And we don't know when, or if, they will ever come back in the numbers we knew before. Entrepreneurs are struggling to survive. Many small businesses that have managed to reopen are making do with significantly less revenue, and are forced to lay off staff. Under occupational restrictions, and because of people's continued fear of catching the virus, restaurants are starving for business. Some notable restaurants are already closed for good. Unemployment is at a historic high. And our world-famous live music industry is shut down. So, what are we going to do? We can cross our fingers and hope that everything eventually bounces back, like it has every other time we've had a disaster for the past 300 years. Or, Plan B - we can use the enormous amount of talent and resources that the last dilemma delivered to us on the crest of the migration and economic wave, and proactively take action to change the direction of the city so that we can cope with, and even capitalize on, the new reality. And that, Plan B, is what Peter Ricchiuti is putting into action on this special edition of Out to Lunch. Peter has assembled a panel of New Orleans business owners and thought leaders who are all impacted by the pandemic. All the members of this panel are invested in grappling with the realities of what the city will need to do to survive this immediate crisis, and are unafraid to tackle questions about the bigger structural issues that have gotten us to this position, on the precipice of a potential and real disaster one of them describes as a coming “Hellscape.” Graison Gill is the owner of Bellegarde Bakery. Until the end of July 2020, when it was forced to close, hopefully temporarily, Bellegarde operated a local retail bakery. It also shipped flour, grits and pasta nationwide. And provided products to more than 120 restaurants. In 2020 Graison Gill was a finalist for the James Beard Award - the Academy Awards of food - for Outstanding Baker. Eric Cook is a combat veteran who served six years in the United States Marine Corps. After his military career, Eric returned to his native New Orleans and became a chef. Eric has cooked at some of New Orleans' finest restaurants, including Commander's Palace. Until July of 2020 when it was forced to close, hopefully temporarily, Eric was owner and Executive Chef at his own restaurant, Gris Gris, in the Lower Garden District. Carol Markowitz is COO and Senior Vice President of Finance at Loyola University. Carol was previously the Founding Executive Director of NOCHI, New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute, she's worked in corporate finance in Los Angeles and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. Matt Wisdom is founder and CEO of New Orleans-based Turbosquid. Turbosquid is the Amazon.com of 3d models. It's the world's leading marketplace for the type of 3D models used in everything from movies and video games to commercials and teaching tools. Holly Devon is a writer, Senior Editor at Antigravity Magazine, and founding editor of The Iron Lattice, a New Orleans quarterly arts publication. Holly has written extensively about tourism and urban planning in New Orleans. Kristin Giselson Palmer is a member of the New Orleans City Council, representing District C, which includes Algiers, the French Quarter, the Marigny, Treme, St. Roch and Bywater neighborhoods. If you're looking for the usual platitudes about how things are all going to be great delivered in biz-speak by the usual suspects, this conversation is not that. This is an honest assessment of where we are, where we're going, and how we're going to get there, from the minds of people who know what they're talking about, and the lived experience of people whose lives and livelihoods depend on the decisions we make about the direction of the City of New Orleans. Flutist and composer Nathalie Joachim first came up with the idea for her debut album in late 2015. She was in Haiti, exploring her Haitian heritage and wanted to know about female artists from the island. Together with her parents, she could only come up with a dozen or so."I was really inspired to make an album centered around the voices of female artist from Haiti largely because they're left out of Haiti's musical history.""I was really inspired to make an album centered around the voices of female artists from Haiti largely because they're left out of Haiti's musical history," she said. Some women on the list included singer Emerante de Pradines, Milena Sandler (daughter of Toto Bissainthe), and vodou revolutionary Carole Demesmin.Joachim's Grammy-nominated album, "Fanm d'Ayiti," sets out to correct some of the omissions of women underrepresented in Haitian history. She thinks this is "a beautiful way to represent the women of Haiti." "Fanm d'Ayiti" translates into "Women of Haiti." On the album, Joachim features new song arrangements and snippets from recorded interviews with some of the women. One voice heard is that of Joachim's own musical hero and maternal grandmother, Ipheta Bellegarde, because "her voice was one that was quite important to me throughout the course of her life." The song featuring Bellegarde's voice is also one her grandmother wrote. It's called "Madan Bellegarde." Bellegarde died in 2015. Joachim says her grandmother was "criticized her whole life because she became a widow when my mother was still an infant, quite young, and never remarried. She really chose to live a life independently of her own design."Joachim would often hear her grandmother share stories about what life was like as a single mom in Haiti in the late 1940s and early '50s. She says her grandmother wrote the song because she was being "judged by all of the sinners around her, people who committed much grander sins than being an unmarried woman, but that she knew at the end of the day she would not be judged by God. And so she wrote this song and would sing it." Now, Joachim sings it. Video of "Madan Bellegarde" - An Excerpt from Nathalie Joachim's "Fanm d'Ayiti" Joachim also recorded with a girls' choir in her family's farming village Dantan. "[It's] a very small place with just one street that has a church and a school and that's it," she said. "And I hope that any one of them, if not all of them, are inspired by how we've been able to spread their voices from this small spot in Haiti across the world." Joachim says she hopes her album touches young women everywhere and that they will "take away the strength and the power and continue to lift each other up ... [and to] look to your elders and find strength in their stories and to be sure to leave a pathway for those coming up behind you. We're all connected."

Bellegarde Bakery Today's episode is all about bread. More specifically, it is about one man’s passion for bread and changing the way we think about it. My guest today is Graison Gill, an artisan in the truest sense. He’s a baker of bread in a city known for po-boys, but that’s not his story. Graison is the founder of Bellegarde Bakery here in New Orleans, and if you love bread you won’t want to miss it. It will change the way you think about that bag of flour sitting in your pantry! New Orleans is the home of the poboy. And the muffuletta. Over the years we ve gotten pretty good at making French bread and muffuletta buns, but we haven t become known for any other kinds of bread that might be a little more sophisticated. Well, like a lot of other things around here, bread baking is changing too. Bellegarde Bakery bakes a range of bread, made from the stone ground flour that they grind themselves. The owner of Bellegarde Bakery, Graison Gill, is changing our perception of bread in New Orleans, and in area restaurants. Not only does Bellegarde bake a range of fine breads, they re so serious about doing it right that they buit their own flour mill and grind their own flour. Another Lousiana staple is rice. Artemis Antipass is the founder of Greek Girls Rice Pudding. If you ve never had it before, rice pudding is to rice, what bread pudding is to bread. Greek Girls is made according to a traditional Antippas family restaurant from generations back, in Greece, brought to New Orleans by Artemis s grandmother. You can find Greek Girls Rice Pudding on supermarket and specialty food shelves in New Orleans, and Houston. And you can find Bellegarde Bakery bread at stores and in restaurants all across South East Louisiana. Photos over lunch at Commander s Palace by Jill Lafleur. Episode Twenty-nine. Carla is our guest this recording, but if her mother inquires, we are a podcast covering important social economic issues, and we're definitely *not* discussing sodomy via vegetables. Dan and Captain Turner enjoy some good old fashioned mud rastlin'... A horny Alma approaches Ellsworth for some sexy times, but he has ample towels... Seth makes a capon of George Hearst... Milch's desire to overpopulate the series with unnecessary characters continues as Chesterton and the insatiable Bellegarde arrive in camp. However, we are now familiar with "the art of figging," and for that we are eternally grateful. ... Also, Emily reassures us that authorities are in pursuit of the trunk thief who torched the Belle Fourche stage crossing.| Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. Saskatchewan's Perry Bellegarde faces many challenges as the new National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations. The organization is in crisis after Shawn Atleo resigned from the post before the end of his term. A number of chiefs felt he acted too independently and was too cozy with the Harper government in Ottawa. Bellegarde’s first challenge will be to convince the chiefs that he needs a degree of independence to be effective, and that cooperation with government can result in meaningful change. If the national chief works closely with Ottawa, there may be movement on calls for a national inquiry on missing and murdered Indigenous women. Bellegarde also needs to focus on education. A majority of chiefs across the country want the government to kill Bill C-33, the Control of First Nations Education Act. They want the money for schools that would come with the legislation but don’t want government to dictate reform of the education system. Bellegarde should definitely encourage all First Nations to improve education on reserves. He should also strongly support a proposed First Nations Property Ownership Act, which will allow Indigenous communities to become more self-sufficient. Hopefully the new national chief will make good decisions and be supported by the Assembly of First Nations. I’m Roger Currie. Join us again next week for more thoughts on the Frontier. Patrick Bellegarde-Smith is a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and author of many books about Vodou. This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode “Patrick Bellegarde-Smith — Living Vodou.” Find more at onbeing.org.
The word “Vodou” evokes images of sorcery and sticking pins into dolls. In fact, it’s a living tradition wherever Haitians are found based on ancestral religions in Africa. We walk through this mysterious tradition — one with dramatic rituals of trances and dreaming and of belief in spirits, who speak through human beings, with both good and evil potential.
