Rachel has been a certified fitness instructor for almost 25 years, teaching a plethora of classes both in big box gyms and as an independent trainer. You will hear more about her story and how she made a decision to take her power back and heal from decades of negative thinking and self sabotage. She realized she had to do the deeper inner work on her mind, body and soul, and now helps her clients with negative body image feel more nourished in their journeys towards holistic health. In our conversation, we discuss: How we both share similar stories of dieting at a young age, and the advice she would give to parents to help prevent their children from experiencing body image issues and poor food relationships Why when she got to a size 0 - the body she thought she always wanted - she was still unhappy, and what she really needed to do in order to heal How starting from a place of self-love and acceptance doesn't mean you set goals or want change Why she had to start with her inner dialogue, the way she was talking to herself, and her advice for uncovering what some of those thought patterns are that might be standing in the way of your goals and optimal health Gratisfied Healthified Online Magazine Instagram: @gratisfied @healthified Empower Bar Baking Mix NEW Gratisfied Bars! Rachel took some time, for a lot of self-reflection and dealing with her past. Rachel shares how ditching that “diet mentality” is something we all need to do. Many of us have forgotten how to trust our body. What does that mean? It's really reintroducing that relationship to your body, knowing your hunger signals are real. Think of it like this, you don't have to tell your body when it's tired. It goes to sleep. You don't have to tell your body when to go to the bathroom. If you go to the bathroom, you have signals that tell you what your body needs. And your hunger is no different. Our stomach growls for a reason. It's trying to let you know it needs some nutritional foods. Rachel shares her belief that often we're forcing ourselves to eat goods we don't enjoy. She encourages women to broaden their horizons when it comes to food. She shares how to take note of how we feel when we eat certain foods. Did it disrupt your digestion? Did it make you feel bloated? Did it make me have a stomachache or headaches or other things you experienced? Once you figure it out, you just don't have to think about it anymore. Lynne and Rachell tackle the huge issue that we have about how we love ourselves. Maybe you've got a bulging belly because that often comes in midlife or maybe you've got a lot of birth scars. Often, we look at our body and don't like what stares back at us in the mirror. So how do we learn to love ourselves and love our bodies just as they are? Rachel shares how important it is to start understanding your body is a gift, but you've thought this way for so long that you need to change the narrative. Rachel shares the steps she took to begin to see her body this way and to love her body again. Rachel then shares some easy ways to add movement into our life so that we increase our health and wellbeing. Rachel encourages us to just take a simple, simple step. Find yourself any color post that you want, something bright and cheery, your favorite color, and just write something about yourself, something that you know that you don't believe. And say it out loud to yourself for a week and see how you feel. According to Rachel, you'll see and feel a difference. Rachel is the author of Doughnut Diaries, Personal trainer, and certified Health couch. She talks to is about body love! Regardless of the shape, size, etc. You Matter and you're beautiful!
In 2018 Fitness and Health Coach Rachel Lavin said enough to the diets and self-sabotage she had been creating for herself for almost all her life. Rachel had been every body size you could count and had a closet full of clothes to prove it. Rachel learned how to embrace healthy cooking (rather than eating the packaged diet foods she was used to surviving on) by being open to the process, with a healthy dose of curiosity and openness to the benefits of eating real healthy food. As a result, Rachel tapped into her intuition and mindfulness and learned what foods work for her body, what don't, and how to be okay with all of it. Rachel went on to write a book called The Doughnut Diaries, a personal story about her journey to make peace with her body. She now coaches women, based on the principles in her book, to love their bodies and make peace with exactly where they are at. If I asked you “Do you love your body?” would your answer be dependent on how well your next diet works or whether you reach your goal weight or if you had more time at the gym? Could you say you love your body right now? I know I've struggled with saying that as so many of us have, especially women. My guest, author of “The Doughnut Diaries” and certified health coach Rachel Lavin, is on a mission to teach body love and help people heal from negative body image. Rachel has experienced not loving her body at every size from 12 to 0 so she knows that self acceptance is not in weight loss but in mindset. Rachel reached a point where, as she put it, “I got sick and tired of being sick and tired”. She reached a point of just being tired of feeling bad about herself. She worked to shift her mindset from feeling ugly and betrayed by her body to being able to wake up and tell herself she's beautiful and mean it. She established three pillars of fitness - nourishment for body and mind, movement, and rest - to encourage women to find the same body love. Rachel and I talk about her book, researching body positivity, how our messaging about our bodies affects our children, and why physicians need to abandon reliance on the BMI and focus on actual health. The messages in this episode are so personal and valuable, I hope you find them as helpful as I do.
