The Pittsburgh Penguins played perhaps two of their best games of the season last week only to have a terrible loss to the Los Angeles Kings overshadow them. Hunter starts the show by getting into the decision to start Casey DeSmith and why it had pros and cons. He looks at how DeSmith didn't do enough to keep the Penguins in the game, especially when giving up the second and third goals. In turn, that allowed Dustin Tokarski to come in ice cold, which showed in an ugly fashion since he hadn't played in a while. After those goals, even when the Penguins played well, it was hard for them to get back into it as the Kings took over. After that, Hunter dives into Sidney Crosby's game misconduct and why he got it. He looks at how the crosscheck happened and how Rickard Rakell didn't even come over to help him, which was a bit weird. He then explains how Crosby had every right to be upset and slams Garrett Rank for continuing to be a garbage official. Hunter also gives the latest practice updates and how Tristan Jarry looks destined to start on Tuesday. He then explains why Jan Rutta won't be activated just yet before circling back to Jarry and why a chronic hip issue could be causing these injuries. The Pittsburgh Penguins have another back-to-back situation this weekend as they're set to play the Winnipeg Jets and the Carolina Hurricanes. Hunter starts the show by reviewing some practice notes from Thursday and giving yinz some small scoops on a couple of the injury situations. After that, he previews Friday's game against the Jets and what's made them so successful this season when not many saw it coming. He analyzes the roster while still not believing in them and goes into what they do well and how the Penguins can counter it, just like they did back in November. After that, Hunter gives his take on the goalie situation and why Dustin Tokarski should start on Friday since he had the hot hand in the Vancouver game. He then pivots to Casey DeSmith and why he would get the chance to get his game back together on Saturday, even though the Penguins would be a bit gassed. Finally, Hunter does a small preview for that game against the Hurricanes and looks at how the Penguins can finally get a result against them. 2023 is here, and so is the PensBurgh Podcast. Refreshed and ready to talk more hockey, Garrett and Robbie are here to break down the latest Pittsburgh Penguins action. Goalie Tristan Jarry suffered an injury in the Winter Classic. His ailment forced Casey DeSmith to enter in relief. Since then, Dustin Tokarski has been recalled from the WB/S Penguins. To avoid beating a dead horse this week a la Jeff Carter/Brian Dumoulin, we'll talk about Casey DeSmith. He owns a 4-7-2 record, 2.99 GAA, and .911 SV PCT. In the event Jarry misses substantial time, how confident are you DeSmith can be the No. 1 goalie with a team that is already so maddeningly inconsistent? In addition to that, we have a six-question mailbag this week to round out the first show of 2023. Don't forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. Monday was the NHL trade deadline and the Sabres were... quiet. Was it too quiet? (10:30). The lack of moves have made things a little awkward in goal with Craig Anderson and Dustin Tokarski still in town while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stays in Rochester (20:00). It also makes things kind of screwy with some of the kids in Rochester and how things are going to go the rest of the way (32:00). It's Casual Friday on Talking Buffalo Podcast, which means Patrick Moran is joined by Noted Hockey author, sports media personality and friend Joe Yerdon to discuss a variety of topics, including some Buffalo Bills midseason awards (both good and bad) as well as thoughts on the void Spencer Brown leaves after going on the Covid list, parity in the NFL, Dustin Tokarski becoming a NHL feel good story and a “Starting Five” draft of best TV Talk Show Hosts. Patrick goes through several Bills individual and team awards at the (pretty much) midseason point and Joe has thoughts on several of them. They also discuss the offensive line potentially in shambles again without Brown and not liking the parity that's engulfing the league. They also spend some time talking about the Sabres, including the surprising emergence of Tokarski in net (this was taped before the Calgary debacle on Thursday night) as well as the importance of this young team experiencing as much winning as possible, even at the expense of a potential higher draft pick next year. That, plus this week's draft of TV Talk Show Hosts and tons more! So, we do what we always do, and scour the league to help you find value that'll give you the edge to win your fantasy matchup and seasons, with an eye to how some performances now could follow through into next season. We ask and answer: Should Cole Caufield be rostered down the stretch? Can anyone be a successful 1C in Nashville, ever? Is Philipp Grubauer really good, or have his backups been really bad? Could Casey Mittelstadt be on track for fantasy relevance? Of the prospects getting turns at the end of the season, which ones are we digging the most? Has Johnny Gaudreau rediscovered his game? Will Ryan Miller ever give up a goal again? ...and more! Also, we congratulate Dustin Au for winning the title of KKUPFL Ultimate Champ! With NHL Rookie camps and Training camps on the horizon, hockey is suddenly in our foreseeable future! Hold on everyone…the finish line is almost upon us. This week’s show is chock full of tidbits, but actual storylines are still hard to come by so here we present the best of what is available. Niklas Kronwall at age 37 has stated that this season could very well be his last in the NHL.  My concern is that when a player makes a statement like this he or she may already be retired in their own mind.  He has won a Stanley Cup and 12 of his 14 years ended in the playoffs.  He has had a solid NHL career with the same organization. Dustin Tokarski, the goaltender that made a name for himself in the 2014 Eastern Conference Finals for the Montreal Canadiens has been given another crack at an NHL position with his signing of a one-year contract with the New York Rangers.  He will be competing for the backup job behind the King, so we wish him well.  Experience wise he is the leader in the clubhouse, but Mazanec and Georgiev may have something to say about it when all is said and done. Jeremy Roenick tweeted out his top ten centers in the league, and overall the list is good, but there are some names that may be out of position.  You’ll have to give us a listen and tell us what you think or if there is someone you would have liked to see on the list. The Forecheckers had their own poll out there on Twitter, and the results were puzzling at best! Which team would improve by 7 or more points this season over last season.  There were 4 choices, the Leafs, the Islanders, the Panthers and the Blue Jackets.  Fifty-eight percent of you said the Leafs had the best chance, but at 105 points last season, they would need a herculean effort to get to 112.  The lowest percentage was the Islanders, at just 8%. Here the team would only need a few more wins and a few less losses, the obvious choice.  Let us know. The Devils signed their first-round pick, defenseman Ty Smith to a 3-year entry level deal. Congrats to the youngster as he had a solid season in the WHL last season and showed that he should at least be given a chance. Finally, we come to the NHL Network’s list of the top 20 defensemen in the league.  To say that this was funny to read may be an understatement as we took umbrage with many choices.  Should Hamilton be in the top 20?  Charlie McAvoy?  He has only been around for one full season.  Give us a listen and tell us who you believe should be on this list.  Perhaps you agree…tell us why! Thanks for all the listening you do and let us know if there is anything you want to hear or just rant at us for our opinions.  Enjoy the show!

Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast

The 48th edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey show sees Elan and Brian trying to go into the All Star Break on a positive note. Our headlines kick off with a terrible, horrible, no-good very bad injury to one of the league's most exciting players of the last 2 months, caused by one of the league's least relevant and under-talented regular skaters of the last several years. I guess we're a little upset about it? We also cover a returning d-man in Winnipeg, goalie creases in Nashville, Montreal, and New Jersey, and a couple outjuried scorers for the Predators and Coyotes. We give our takes on the Dubnyk trade, and what it means for several other goalies not even named Dubnyk, as well as the latest batch of forwards making surprise appearanceson top scoring lines and in box scores. In another round of Sustainable or Fleeting, Elan and Brian take on a couple Oilers finding chemistry(?), a faded Star showing flashes of scoring brilliance, the Senators' second-best rookie, and a top line that has finally started playing like one.Players of note this week include a healthy scratch who leads his team in goal-scoring, a winger who consistently transcends his sidekick designation, a record-setting workhorse goalie, and yet another Florida Panther. The show rounds off with our quickest Lightning Round ever, featuring brief updates on a sputtering rookie D, an understated forward finding his game again, and one of  three Zajacs in the Devils organization.Players discussed on this episode include Mathieu Perreault, Devan Dubnyk, Pekka Rinne, Carter Hutton, Marek Mazanec, Toby Enstrom, Evander Kane, James Neal, Martin Hanzal, Travis Zajac, Clarke MacArthur, Carey Price, Cory Schneider, Braden Holtby, Dustin Tokarski, Keith Kinkaid,  Martin Hanzal, Darcy Kuemper, Colin Wilson, David Backes, Mike Fisher, James Neal, Filip Forsberg, Matt Beleskey, Sami Vatanen, Bryan Bickell, Patrick Sharp, Riley Sheahan, Alex Steen, Ryan Callahan, Josh Bailey, Nicklas Backstrom, Martin Brodeur, Josh Harding, Mark Stone, Derek Roy, Ales Hemsky, Benoit Pouliot, TJ Oshie, Mikkel Boedker, Kyle Palmieri, Kyle Okposo, Jonathan Huberdeau, and more.If you enjoy the show, please support us by becoming a patron of Keeping Karlsson. Keeping Karlsson patrons can join our patron-only Facebook group and take part in (and receive audio from) a monthly live Keeping Karlsson broadcast! You can also support us by telling a friend, subscribing to and reviewing Keeping Karlsson on iTunes, and following us on Twitter (@keepingkarlsson).
