In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the news breaking today the Zach Fucale will sign with KHL's Traktor Chelyabinsk. "He's a qualified goaltender who has long been considering the possibility of continuing his career in the AHL," Volkov said. "Here, he wants to find a new motivation for himself to improve his level of play." Fucale was passed up by Hunter Shepard on the depth chart and wants to work on his game. Both goalies are UFA's at the end of the season Later Dan talks about the latest with Nick Backstrom. Nick had a hip resurfacing procedure done and the outlook at the time wasn't the greatest. GM Brian Maclellan wasn't feeling to confident about Nick in April. "That's a major surgery," MacLellan said back in April. "I think it's frustrating in that I don't know how much better does it get? I haven't seen any other players do it, recover and get back to the level they thought they were at before. I don't know where that ends up with the offseason training. He's going to have to make a decision on his career where he thinks he's at." Nick has seen an improvement and GM Maclellan is more hopeful In the last segment Dan talks about the status or Rasmus Sandin who was injured at the IIHF World Championship. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the goalie situation. Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard are UFA's at the end of the season. The question of if the Bears should bring them both back is complicated. The Bears recently signed Mitchell Gibson. From Nova Caps: "The Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli is reporting that the Washington Capitals have signed goaltender prospect Mitchell Gibson to a one-year deal. Gibson is also expected to sign an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Hershey Bears, which will allow him to join the team this season." Seems like a solid option for years to come. Later Dan talks about James van Riemsdyk. In a piece in the Hockey Writer's they talk about him being a viable option. Dan weighs the pros and cons and how he doesn't really fit the narrative of the team getting younger. In the final segment Dan talks about Caps prospect Henrik Rybinski and where he fits in with the Capitals long term plans. According to The Hockey Writer's "The Capitals signed Rybinski to a three-year entry-level contract in March 2022, and he has been playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hershey Bears since the start of the 2022-23 season. He has transitioned well to the professional level, with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points through 44 games, as well as a plus-5 rating and 18 penalty minutes. He seems like a good option not this season, but maybe a season or two from now.CHAT ONE ON ONE ABOUT THE CAPS ON SUBTEXT: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedoncapitalsSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. In this episode I talk about Zach Fucale and how I think he deserves to have a lengthier look on the Washington Capitals. The Capitals got inconsistent netminding all season with Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samonov. Fucale made his NHL debut on November 11, 2021, registering a 21-save shutout. In doing so he became the first goalie in Washington Capitals history to register a shutout in his NHL debut, and the first NHL goalie to do so since Garret Sparks In his second NHL game, on January 8, 2022, he did not surrender a goal until late in the third period, setting a new NHL record for the longest shutout streak to begin a career Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. We all know changes need to be made. But what changes? I think it's time to work in some of the younger AHL players into this lineup. Is it Zach Fucale's time to shine? Will Connor McMichael take on a bigger role? Did Lars Eller play his last game with the Capitals? We're heading closer to the July free agency deadline. It would be in the Capitals best interest to take care of these issues before then.Number one on the priority list is getting a solid number two netminder. Fresh off of his third straight shutout win in Hershey, I believe it's Zach Fucale's time to be a netminder for the Washington Capitals.
