Fated Mates

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2022 77:05 Very Popular

Our Trailblazer episodes continue this week with Jude Deveraux, an early historical romance author who broke several publishing barriers over her more than forty year career. In this episode, we talk about her journey through the Wild West of romance in the late 1970s, her publishing career at Avon Books, Pocket Books and Ballantine. We talk about the judgement and misogyny that circles romance, the buying power of readers, and the way the genre and bookselling has changed. We also talk about her writing process, and what it's like to be Jude Deveraux. This one is a real joy for us, as we wouldn't be the readers or writers we are without Jude Deveraux. This episode is sponsored by Avon Books, publisher of Joanna Shupe's The Bride Goes Rogue, and Amazon's Kindle Vella, publisher of Eloisa James's The Seduction Series. Our next read along is Virginia Henley's The Dragon and the Jewel, a deep cut from Sarah's childhood. Check your content warnings and remember this one is from 1991, so we don't even know, honestly. We're flying without a net here. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo or your local indie.Show NotesLike many of our trailblazers, Jude Deveraux's first brush with romance was Kathleen E Woodiwiss's The Flame & the Flower. The publisher with “the prettiest covers” in the 1970s she references was Woodiwiss's publisher, Avon Books. Books of Jude Deveraux's that we talk about in depth include: The Enchanted Land (her debut novel), A Knight in Shining Armor (early time-travel romance), Sweet Liar, The Providence Falls series with Tara Sheets, The Girl from Summer Hill, Twin of Ice (the twins!!), and “The Matchmakers” a short story in The Invitation collection (featuring Cale & the angel sex scene). The Four Js were Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught.People mentioned in the episode: Kate Duffy, editor at Silhouette Books and Pocket Books; Joan Schulhafer, publicist at Pocket Books; Richard Gallen, publisher & packager; Ronald Busch, publisher of Pocket Books; Robert Gottlieb, agent; Linda Marrow, editor at Ballantine/Doubleday/Dell; Kathryn Falk, publisher of Romantic Times Magazine; Kathe Robin, reviewer at Romantic Times Magazine.

We're tackling one of Sarah's favorite tropes this week — the celebrity romance! We talk about all the ways that her buttons were installed (thanks Judith McNaught) and about how rare movie stars are in romance even now, all these years later. We discuss The Chrises, the appeal of celebrity/normal person pairings, the difference between film/tv romance and rockstar/sports star romance, and about why Americans especially love a celebrity. Oh, and we get into our own existential despair. Visit fatedmates.net/fatedstates for past episodes of us being Big Mad if you want some inspiration. Thanks to Avon Books, publishers of Eloisa James's How to Be a Wallflower for sponsoring the episode. Thanks, also, to Lumi Labs, creators of Microdose Gummies. Visit microdose.com and use code FATEDMATES to get free shipping & 30% off your first order. Our next read along is Jeannie Lin's Butterfly Swords. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo. Show NotesA leaked memo from The Supreme Court makes clear the fate of Roe V. Wade, and the other civil rightsthey're looking to eliminate next. We'll be reactivating Fated States soon, and you can listen to some of our previous episodes (RBG, bodily autonomy, elda minger) related to these topics. It's terrifying and feels like its all unraveling, so just fight where you can, remember we've been here before, and you should organize in your local community to help others. Check out the Auction for Reproductive Rights being organized by The Meet Cute Book Shop, and donate to an abortion fund near you. Good Chrises only, please: Hemsworth, Pine, Pang, and Evans. As we say, name is destiny. We feel bad about it, but both of us thought about the book Perfect after hearing about the shooting on the movie set Rust. Here is a timeline of how Alec Baldwin ended up with a live weapon.Perfect takes place is some part of Texas where it snows, and Judith McNaught partnered with Coors to raise awareness of and adult literacy. We love it when Normal people and movie stars get together.Harry Styles will be on tour later this year, everyone. I'm not sure why photographers love “the wet suit photoshoot”, but it's definitely a thing. If you think you've bought a book before on Amazon, but it's showing you the buy button. Go to Your Content and Devices and search for the book. You can also search your digital orders. Charlevoix MI is a cute tourist town on the shores of Lake Michigan, which is very big by the way. Unsure about whether or not merpeople live there, but there are lots of shipwrecks. The final girl is a horror trope. Our next read along is Butterfly Swords by Jeannie Lin.

It's a Very Special Episode™️ of Fated Mates today, celebrating the rerelease of Sarah's first book, Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake! We talk about the book that started Sarah's romance career, about why it still resonates, about new covers during a pandemic, and yes…we get to the bottom of the age old question: Will Benedick Ever Get a Book? You can buy the new Nine Rules at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop, and get signed copies at WORD. This episode is sponsored by Adriana Herrera, author of The Duke Makes Me Feel and The Romancelandia Shop. Our read along next week is Diana Quincy's Her Night With the Duke, which was on our Best of 2020 year-end list! Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo, or at your local bookstore. You can also get it in audio from Chirp Books!Show NotesThis tweet about Car Talk made Jen laugh. It really was the greatest NPR show of all time, and since they are no dummies, they have in fact made it into a podcast.Buy the books with stepbacks now, because we aren't sure how long they are going to last. Lots of folks participate in #StepbackSaturday on Twitter and Instagram to share their favorites. Sarah's agent at the time was Alyssa Eisner-Henkin, who is still a great YA and children's agent!Sarah's editor is still Carrie Feron, who has edited romance for her entire career. Authors she has edited include Lisa Kleypas, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Sally Thorne, Jude Deveraux, Elizabeth Lowell and Eloisa James. The name of the documentary about romance is called Love Beneath the Covers (2016), which is a fascinating look at the romance genre. Where's My Hero is a romance anthology that featured some of the good guys, and it's available in eBook and print.

This M/M romance is an epistolary lovefest between Alex, the First Son of the United States and Henry, Prince of Wales. It's enemies to lovers, y'all, so you know we're into it because we have issues. Also discussed are dumbbells for your penis (they're a real thing), how everyone has a weird accent on this episode, and unfortunately we pull a really boring A-YOS! card. This week, Wendy and Toni reviewed transformations happening in “The Ugly Duchess” and the “Seduced by a Pirate” novella by Eloisa James!Theodora and James have been friends since childhood, since his father, the duke, was entrusted with her care since her father’s passing.  Then his father’s embezzling of Theodora aka Daisy’s dowry due to his bad investments led to his demand for James to marry Daisy.  It was Daisy’s first season on the marriage mart and their ruse to make her interest jealous by flirting with James had him noticing her differently, and it was evident by his body’s reactions.  They were caught in a compromising situation which led to marriage, but the passion between the two grew exponentially within the few days they were together.  Society wondered how “the ugly Duchess” caught the handsome James, but he only saw a beautiful woman.  His father, though, ruined everything with his ugly words and a truth of the betrothal which Daisy heard.  Instead of running to the country, Daisy kicked both the duke and her husband out.  Soon, Daisy started her transformation into the ducal head and fashionable woman that has everyone seek to grace their ballrooms.  James drifted the seas and started his transformation to Jack the pirate then privateer.  After seven years during James’ death ceremony, he showed up and they both find themselves changing again.  Sometimes, we change due to circumstances beyond our control.  Sometimes, we change because we want to.  Whatever the reasons, whatever the outcome, we transform into a stronger person.  Join the ladies as they discuss how to transform ourselves!Drawing Room Discussions –Thank you for your concerns and well wishes!Goodies from IG@romantically_swept_awaySmoked salmon & spicy ahi sauceWendy’s fashion plans"Official, unofficial book review” / Listicle – 17:41Featuring –The Ugly DuchessSeduced by a Pirate novellaFairy Tales serieswww.eloisajames.comwww.amazon.com/Eloisa-James/e/B001H6U948/www.bookbub.com/authors/eloisa-jameswww.facebook.com/eloisajameswww.goodreads.com/eloisajameswww.instagram.com/eloisajamesbooks"Pot-tail Pondering" – 42:14Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskeywww.properwhiskey.comwww.facebook.com/ProperWhiskeywww.instagram.com/ProperWhiskeywww.twitter.com/ProperWhiskeywww.youtube.com/properwhiskeyEmail - litwallflowerspodcast@gmail.com Follow on www.instagram.com/litwallflowerspodcastShop at https://www.zazzle.com/store/lit_wallflowers/productsWebsite https://linktr.ee/litwallflowersNext Up – “Once Upon a Tower” and “With this Kiss” novella

Wendy and Toni probably wouldn’t have been able to feel a pea under layers of mattresses hence they won’t pass the ultimate Princess/Duchess test. Hopefully, they would be able to feel a key for their freedom like in Eloisa James’s “The Duke is Mine.”Sometimes, we’re put in situations that we can’t control or can’t politely escape from. Long before Olivia Lytton was born, she was bred to become a duchess and betrothed to the future Duke of Canterwick, Rupert. Her twin sister, Georgiana, was also put through duchess training just in case, and she was in the running to marry Tarquin aka Quin, Duke of Sconce. Strong-willed Olivia was not the ideal duchess, but she followed the plan and remained loyal even when Rupert decided he wanted to go to war before ever marrying. She even watched over Lucy, Rupert’s dog, when he was away and beyond. The ideal bride, Georgiana, was perfect for Quin, the opposite type of woman in contrast to his first, trollop of a wife. But a kiss on the rainy night that sparked a desire between Olivia and Quin only grew and jeopardized everything. Olivia had been fighting the urge, but Georgiana surprised her with mention her own desires. Then they receive news about Rupert’s heroism and feelings were questioned. We never know what goes through other people’s mind. Our insecurities can make us think the worst. It’s a good thing there are many ways to communicate and get answers. This week, Wendy and Toni are reviewing “When Beauty Tamed the Beast” and “Winning the Wallflower” by Eloisa James! We enjoy a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and it was great to have a surly doctor inspired by the TV series “House” for a beast! Linnet left the London life for the sea pool of Wales and for her betrothed, Piers, whose father claims he can’t sire children, so her compromised status was welcomed. The doctor could tell there was no ruination and had no desire to marry, but he finds himself in her bedroom in the mornings so they can go swimming. Their morning swimming lessons helped to bring the two heroes together because Linnet was one of the few who wasn’t cowed by Piers’s sarcastic humor and genius. When an illness spread the area, the only way to get Linnet to leave were hurtful word regarding her only externally beautiful. When he found her fallen ill and scaly, he had to find the right words indicating her beauty is beyond skin deep. In his own sarcastic fashion and his medical prescribed medicine, Pier found a way to show Linnet’s beastly complexion wasn’t internal and she will heal in time. Linnet received some sort of help from others to get through her illness and trauma, but she had to find the beauty within her boiled-lobster-self to feel truly her again. We are very pro health care workers these days — we love all of you…doctors, nurses, EMTs, home health aides…if you know how to work a stethoscope, we’re into you. This week, we’re taking about some of our favorite medical romances. Listen for Jen getting thoughtful, and Sarah getting wildly inappropriate. We’re all just doing our best.We love having you with us! — subscribe on your favorite podcasting platform and like/review the podcast, please!Next week, we’re reading Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s Nobody’s Baby But Mine, and we cannot WAIT. We know it’s tough to get it in print, but find it in e at your local library or at: Amazon (free in Kindle Unlimited!), Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo, or in print, mailed from your local indie (which is probably still shipping!).Show NotesAs we all shelter in place, romance twitter has been very entertaining. Julia Kelly posted a thread where she posed her pets as romance novel covers, and everyone had fun with it. Sarah also loved this one about a dog who howls along with the Law and Order theme song.We forgot to tell you last week when we talked about Devil's Bride that Stephanie Laurens has a new book out, The Inevitable Fall of Christopher Cynster. We also have added information about how to pronounce Honoria and details about peach silk. Now is the time to get the BookBub daily romance email. Here's Sarah's Bookbub page. The nurse and doctor books were the backbone of early Mills and Boon romances, and the forerunner of the modern Harlequin Medical Romance; whereas Americans often find big, soapy hospital dramas on TV.Budleigh Salterton looks like a very nice place to hang out unless you are a bored American 12 year old.The roots of American and British romance are different, as proven by this absolutely WRONG LitHub romance essay. (They're wrong about romance a lot.)Sarah has talked about Radclyffe and the origin of Bold Strokes Books, but many of her romances are about doctors or set in hospitals.Jen doesn't really care too much about job details. Sorry not sorry. No one likes a Bloodletter. We want our historical doctors to be foreward thinking. Or as Eloisa James does in When Beauty Tamed the Beast, use a modern TV character like House as model for a hero.In Tempest, Jen spoke out inequities in acess to medical care for black patients, and that's still true today. If you're looking to see some "don't fuck your doctor" romances that definitely fall somewhere on the Simone Scale. Wrong by Jana Aston and Medicine Man by Saffron Kent.Jurgen Klopp wants you to put your hands away, and this amazing thread by comedian Laura Lexx and support all the Liverpool fans out there (especially Jen's brother).Jen's cool TikTok project is up and running, she's interviewing YA authors and hoping to get kids to read while they are sheltering in place. You can order buttons from Kelly and t-shirts from Jordandene.Next time, we'll be reading Nobody's Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

Feedback The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (rec’d by Brannan) Questions 1. I am looking for two sets of books. The first: historical romance. I like Julia Quinn and pretty much read most of her books. I also like Candace Camp and read some Eloisa James. My favorite of Julia’s are the Bridgerton series. Can you please suggest historical romance that have Cinderella/fariytale like stories. It would be great if there is witty banter and family dynamics. Second: I am looking for fantastical/magical sort of books. I loved Harry Potter. Something with wizards or witches could be fun. Also, if it could be a feel good sort of book where there is a happy ending, it would be great. Thank you so much for your help. -Maymuna 2. This is yet another request from a woman shopping for her husband, but there is no Brandon Sanderson involved. My husband self-identifies as a slow reader and he has very little free time to read (he’s an emergency medicine doctor and he runs a business on the side), so we try to make each book selection count. He recently loved The Sympathizer and Homegoing; he liked but didn’t love The Topeka School and Disappearing Earth; he is forcing himself to finish Lincoln in the Bardo because I loved it but it’s really not for him; and he DNFed my beloved Pride & Prejudice. Cutting for Stone and Cider House Rules are all-time favorites, and he loved Trevor Noah’s memoir Born a Crime. He also recently BLAZED THROUGH Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality; I was not surprised by how much he enjoyed that book, but I WAS surprised by how obsessively he read it. He is already planning to read The Overstory and Pachinko because of how much I loved them. I’d love any other suggestions you might have! -Elizabeth 3. Need by the end of March. At the beginning of April, I’m going back to Hungary for a friend’s wedding. I’m taking my time getting there so between planes, trains and no automobiles, I’m going to have a lot of time. I’m set on audiobooks but would like a physical book to bust out when I’m tired of listening. Countries I’m hitting up are the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Hungary and maybe Belgium. I don’t care about the genre, just need something for entertainment. -Megan 4. Hi Amanda and Jenn! Thank goodness for you two! I am seeking a book suggestion for my (hopefully) future Mother in Law’s birthday. Important stuff!! We have recently been discussing her love for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. She has friends who also love these books and have picked up the idea of sending jeans to one another. She didn’t realize there was a 5th book to the series and was so excited to listen to it on audio. Turns out the final book was not at all what she was hoping for nor expecting and a huge disappointment to the series ending. I’m hoping you ladies can help think up the perfect comp. to the Traveling Pants that embodies all the wholesome feel-good sentiments and tells a tale of amazing female friendships. No teenage innocence turning into adulthood angst or heart-wrenching plot lines that will make her cry. I think some romance mixed in might be fine but nothing too spicy. I suppose a series would be nice but definitely not necessary. Thanks so much for your help!! -Megan 5. Love the show and hearing your recommendations. I’ve been starting to get into classical music, but know so little about it that I feel a bit overwhelmed trying to familiarize myself the different eras, composers, etc. I was wondering if you have a classical music inspired recommendation. It could be a nonfiction pick, maybe a memoir, or even a work of fiction where classical music is part of the essence. I’ve seen good reviews for “Counterpoint: A Memoir of Bach and Mourning” so I’m already interested in picking that one up. -Eric 6. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I love reading romance books, especially with same sex couples. The problem is though, I can’t seem to find good, fictional, professional adult romances with a gay (male/male) couples. I would love if you could recommend any. It can be sad or triggering ( After reading A little life I’m immune

I love the show; it’s fun to hear the really specific things people are looking for and your suggestions are so interesting. I’m headed in mid-April to Moniack Mhor, a writing center in Inverness-shire, Scotland. I’d love recommendations for books set in Inverness-shire, the town of Inverness, or anywhere else in the Scottish Highlands. I don’t really like historical fiction, romance (I’m okay with it being part of the plot, but don’t like books where it’s the main thing), science fiction/fantasy, or beautifully written books where not a lot happens. I’ve read books by Scottish authors Val McDermid, Ian Rankin (and probably most of the Scottish mystery writers) and Muriel Spark. Any suggestions for contemporary fiction, especially YA, would be amazing. -Sarah   2. Hi ladies! I’d like help finding a book for a friend or an audiobook recommendation (or both!). She loves books that empower women and have all the best intentions of showing you how to live your best life. She has enjoyed reading You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, and loved listening to The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein. Anything similar would be great! -Megan   3. Thank you so much for this wonderful podcast! Longtime listener, first time “requester”… here goes. I am finally rejoining the dating scene after a painful divorce following almost twenty years of marriage. I am pretty nervous, as things have changed just a bit since I was last on a date! So, I’m hoping you can help me with a romance book recommendation. I am new to the genre and have enjoyed only “The Kiss Quotient” and “The Duchess War”… I identified with the awkwardness of the characters and would love to read more. Would you be able to recommend a romance that I might be able to identify with, given my circumstance? Trying really hard not to feel like I’m the only one!! (Maybe I am?!) Thank you both so much, -Jodi   4. I am looking for two sets of books. The first: historical romance. I like Julia Quinn and pretty much read most of her books. I also like Candace Camp and read some Eloisa James. My favorite of Julia’s are the Bridgerton series. Can you please suggest historical romance that have Cinderella/fairytale like stories. Also, if it could be a feel good sort of book where there is a happy ending, it would be great. Thank you so much for your help. -Maymuna   5. I am looking for a book recommendation to help with being an introvert handling drawn out social situations. I am very introverted but can usually handle social situations that I have some control over or that have a defined start and end time (ie being at work or going out for meals with friends). Drawn out social situations like hosting people at my house for several days are very stressful for me. Last week was really difficult when after having my second child and being postpartum my in-laws stayed with us for a week. Needless to say, I found it to be very stressful on top of the lack of sleep and am worried that I could damage my relationship with my family. Can you recommend any books on how to handle social situations when being introverted? I’ve already read Quiet. Thanks! -Stressed Introvert   6. So I recently caught the live performance of Rent on Fox, which is a musical I have loved since childhood and always leaves me wishing there was more. I am so enthralled by ensembles of all-compelling characters and strong friendships, but I mostly get that vibe from TV shows and movies such as The Family Stone, This Is Us, Friends (!), Parenthood, and of course Rent. I’m open to all levels of realism and time periods, but am hoping that you know of any books that reflect the feels from shows like these. Please PLEASE share your secrets!! -Emily #HookedOnGetBooked   7. Hi. I love your podcast and I usually don’t have a bit of trouble finding books to read. My TBR Of 560 books on Good Reads certainly attests to that. But… because of a family member, my Uncle Tom and because of a friend’s mother I have a special interest in finding 2 topics I haven’t come across yet. I love non- fiction but I love reading a historical fiction about a topic first. Do you know of any books, a) featuring the Flying Tigers over Burma during WWII and/or b) the flight of the people referred to as White Russians fleeing Russia after the fall of the Tsar. Thanks. I’m more than happy to just get an email… I’ll still listen to every episode! -Jill   Books Discussed Dune by Frank Herbert Thick by Tressie McMillan Cottom September by Rosamunde Pilcher The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan The Power of Meaning by Emily Esfahani Smith Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes The Day of the Duchess by Sarah Maclean A Girl Like Her by Talia Hibbert (tw: discussion of domestic violence) Tessa Dare’s Castles Ever After series (Romancing the Duke #1) Witchmark by CL Polk The Awakened Introvert by Arnie Kozak Post: Life-Changing Books for Introverts I Thought It Was Just Me by Brené Brown A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (TW self-harm, sexual assault, harm to children) Holding Still For As Long As Possible by Zoe Whitall A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles The Book of Happiness by Nina Berberova (tw: suicide)

Whatcha Reading (March 3rd, 2018) I’m sorry about the audio quality on this one; I’m not sure what happened after I finished exporting the file. One day I will know what the hell I’m doing. Today is not that day. *sigh* I start off with some good ol’ romancelandia WTFery, thanks to a romance that Lauren found where the heroine’s dog dies and comes back as a man, whom she then falls for. WHAT. (I still do not know, but PASS!) From there, I move into some more serious topics in romancelandia, mainly the Ripped Bodice’s 2017 diversity in publishing report, which is, uh, NOT GOOD, to say the least. Finally, I'm talking about books by Lia Riley, Elyse Springer, and Kelly Bowen, including quotes and sex scenes (OF COURSE!). As always, I wrap things up with my current read and audiobook (Naima Simone and Eloisa James, respectively). Have a great weekend everyone and happy reading!
