Why "Emergency Mode" Climate Activism Is Essential (w/ Dr. Margaret Klein Salamon)

Not all climate activism has been popular. Some of the most viral, disruptive protests have been met with backlash, even by some in the climate movement itself. As Dr. Margaret Klein Salamon notes, these activists are operating in "emergency mode," serving as a reminder that the climate crisis is a crisis and nothing should be prioritized above it.  In the latest edition of her book Facing the Climate Emergency: How to Transform Yourself with Climate Truth, Dr. Klein Salamon argues that too few of us are operating in emergency mode, even in the climate fight. So how do we get there? On today's show, we discuss what emergency mode looks like, the data-driven approach to understanding the role of protest in raising awareness and leading to electoral success, and the emotional benefits to honestly reckoning with the climate crisis.  Read Facing the Climate Emergency: How to Transform Yourself with Climate Truth Subscribe to our Substack newsletter "The Climate Weekly" As always, follow us @climatepod on Twitter and email us at theclimatepod@gmail.com. Huawei Technologies has officially launched its flagship Mate50 Pro smartphone in South Africa, and the company's Akhram Mohamed is in the studio to tell TechCentral's audience all about it. Mohamed, who is vice president of operations at Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa, unpacks the key features of the Mate50 Pro, including its Ultra Aperture XMAGE camera system and Kunlun Glass, which greatly enhances screen drop resistance – and we put it to the test rather dramatically in this episode of TCS Impact Series. The smartphone, available through network operators or the Huawei online store, features a distinctive new “Space Ring” design for the rear camera system and comes in two different types of rear cover: silver or black glass, or a premium orange vegan leather. And, no, thanks to US sanctions on China, there is no official Google Mobile Services support for the phone – but Mohamed explains in the interview why it's now easy to access apps and services through Huawei's AppGallery. Other key features of the new Mate50 Pro include: * IP68-rated water resistance; * 6.74-inch Huawei FullView Display with a screen resolution of 2 616x1 212 pixels and a high refresh rate of 120Hz and 1 440Hz PWM dimming to reduce flickering and relieve eye fatigue * A 4 700mAh battery, despite a slim-body design; * 66W fast-charging via cable or 50W wireless fast-charging; and * Low-battery Emergency Mode that activates when the battery level falls to 1%, with SuperEnergy Boosting that allows the Mate50 Pro to extend standby time by three hours, or 12 minutes of call time. The Huawei Mate50 Pro is available in South Africa from all network providers and is priced from R24 999 for the 256GB and R26 999 for the 512GB version. TechCentral

Modern smartphones have a potentially life-saving feature called "SOS" or "Emergency" mode that can give first responders critical medical information and automatically dial your country's emergency phone number. It can report your location and even notify selected contacts. In today's show, I'll share a story from one woman who believes this mode saved her life. In this episode I talk about living in emergency mode for too long, and how it has a lasting effect on our psyches, our personality, our attitudes about life and people, and how we choose to become either more or less selfish, more or less kind, more or less robust, empowered, and more or less  enriched in our lives. Then I'll talk about how we might fight this phenomenon. We can't always change our workaday life circumstances right away, but there are ways to enrich ourselves emotionally and intellectually, ways to explore our passion and freedom, and ways to make our lives have more value and meaning than the sum total of how our job or humdrum life makes us feel. Then, I'll talk about a close personal friend who died, how it's making me sink into a rut, and how I choose to see and process it, and what we can do to learn from life's more grim harshness, from mortality, and from gritty "unmagical" realism. Rest in peace Emidio, I love you, you were a fun and special guy, and I will miss you friend. I'm sorry things ended the way they did.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chefbrycomedy)

3 Steps to Practice Long-Term Thinking

The Modern Customer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 9, 2021 32:05

The last nearly two years have been dominated by short-term thinking. With the pandemic and world changing so rapidly, most companies had to abandon long-term plans to focus on what's right ahead of them. In our personal lives, most of us are more focused on getting through the day than working towards our long-term plans.  Short-term thinking isn't bad, but according to Dorie Clark, author of The Long Game, we can't live our whole lives in emergency mode. When individuals and companies are too focused on short-term thinking, we miss the chance to proactively direct our strategy and outcomes. Long-term thinking helps us take back control and get us where we want to go.  As the pandemic slowly subsides in many places, long-term thinking is making a comeback. But the adjustment from focusing only on the here and now to the bigger picture can be jarring.  Clark suggests three steps to becoming a long-term thinker: Create white space. You have to have mental space to be able to think long term. It is almost impossible to engage in strategic thinking if you are mentally maxed out or overwhelmed. Focus on the right things. Get clear about what your priorities should be. Each person needs to focus on the right things for themselves. Keep the faith. Nearly every long-term goal faces setbacks and challenges along the way. It's easy to get frustrated and give up, but Clark says it's crucial to understand where you are in the process and persevere.  Thinking long term can get us out of the rut of monotony and searching for daily balance to instead see things from a different perspective. Clark calls it thinking in waves or the idea that we don't need to have balance every day or every week as long as we have balance eventually. There are seasons and phases to life, and long-term thinking allows us to recognize those phases and shift so that we continually improve and work towards our goals.  The pandemic has changed how we think. But even as we adjust to new ways of doing things, the ability to embrace long-term thinking and proactively take control of our lives and careers can lead to tremendous growth. _______________ Blake Morgan is a customer experience futurist, keynote speaker, and author of the bestselling book The Customer Of The Future. For regular updates on customer experience, sign up for her weekly newsletter here.  Join the new Customer Experience Community here.

And, how election coverage has changed (and stagnated) since 2016. 1. Jay Rosen [@jayrosen_nyu], media critic and author of the blog PressThink, on how political journalism needs to switch to an "emergency" setting. Listen. 2. Nate Silver [@NateSilver538], founder and editor-in-chief at FiveThirtyEight, on how his election forecast model has changed (and remained the same) since 2016. Listen. 3. Sam Jackson [@sjacks26], professor at University of Albany, on the debate over "militia member" vs. "domestic terrorist." Listen. 4. OTM reporter Micah Loewinger [@MicahLoewinger] investigates how a walkie-talkie app called Zello is enabling armed white supremacist groups to gather and recruit. Listen. Episode 9 of the Saved by the Bellerin podcast looks at the eroding mental state and performance level of the club since the international break.  The team resumed its on-again, off-again, awful-on-the-road, decent-at-home yo yo, scoring only one point from a possible six in the two Premier League contests since the break ended.  The slide has seen Arsenal drop rapidly from 3rd to 5th in the table.  Just as alarming, it seems powerless at the moment to retain pace with the streaking Leicester City and Chelsea squads, who have leapfrogged the Gunners into the last two top four slots.  Dean, Sammy, Ryan, and Rafael look at the continued lack of direction and leadership from Unai Emery, whose managerial stint may have reached a crisis point in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. Captain Granit Xhaka gestured rudely to the crowd which jeered him as he was subbed out midway through the second half, and the captain tossed his armband and shirt to the turf in disgust as he stormed into the locker room.  The lads take a renewed look at Emery's leadership and wonder what consequence Xhaka should suffer.  They also look at the manager's odd handling of Mesut Ozil, whom the manager has frozen out of the lineup since a first month road contest at Watford, and wonder if the two incidents reflect a bigger malaise in the team's dressing room?  They also wonder if the team may have hit a trip wire with the manager and question how long Arsenal can wait for a turnout if the club is serious about a top four finish this season.  It's a sober pod but it's an important one.
