Emily Chappell had barely ridden a bike until she moved to London after university and became a cycle courier. Quickly discovering a love for cycling led her on a life-changing journey, which culminated in winning the fearsome Transcontinental Race. The British cyclist and author has led a remarkable life and joined Rob and Eliot on Just Ride to talk about ultra-endurance racing, attempting to race on no sleep for three days, and finding slugs in your helmet after a night snoozing in a field. The Transcontinental Race is the definitive self-supported bike race across Europe. Every rider is self-reliant for logistics and navigation, making it a true psychological test – let alone a physical one. The route is typically 4,000km and, in 2016, Emily completed it in an incredible 13 days. She told Rob and Eliot all about that, as well as her life as a cycle courier in central London, and what her next challenges could be.We're coming to the end of Just Ride season one but if you'd like to earn a shoutout on the show please email us at podcast@redbull.com with your best biking stories, or you can hit Eliot and Rob up on their socials – @robwarner970 & @eliotjackson – to share the Just Ride love.New episodes of Just Ride are released every other Tuesday. In 2016, Emily Chappell was the first woman across the line in the Transcontinental Race, covering some 4000km and 50,000m of climbing in 13 days, 10 hours and 28 minutes. It was only the second time the former bike courier had entered, her first endeavour ending in hospital after she was forced to retire with chest pains. Since then all manner of big ride challenges have ensued, with Emily co-founding the Adventure Syndicate along the way, an organisation that encourages women to take on challenging rides. Last summer she once again rode ahead of the Tour de France as part of Le Loop, but upon returning to the UK after another mammoth few months riding around the globe, she found she was suffering from post-Covid, post-viral fatigue. Here she tells James and Anthony about her adventures, her relationship to the cycling and how she's bouncing back to fitness.Check out Adventure Syndicate here and Le Loop here This episode is supported by H.V.M.N, the creators of Ketone-IQ.We hear a lot about ketones in the pro peloton, but what are they?According to the experts H.V.M.N, ketones are a natural source of fuel for your body. When stored carbs are depleted, your body starts to convert fat into ketones. Studies show that ketones are 28% more efficient than glucose, making them a super-efficient fuel source for the brain and the body. These benefits led H.V.M.N to create Ketone-IQ: a drinkable ketone designed to support energy, focus and endurance.Developed alongside the U.S. military, Ketone-IQ is one of the most powerful ketone supplements on the market. It's designed to elevate your ketone levels for up to 4 hours – much longer than other products. Plus, it's vegan, caffeine free, and compliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency's guidelines. That's a major win for athletes.Ketone-IQ Shots are the best way to get your ketones on the go. In this episode of Service Course, Tom Whalley looks back on the fixed gear phenomenon, which peaked around a decade ago, and asks what happened to fixie culture. He speaks with Max Leonard, co-author of Fixed, former bike messenger Emily Chappell, and Tibco-SVB's Tanja Erath. Tanja came into pro-cycling through the Zwift academy, but before that she started making waves racing in fixed gear criteriums, notably the much missed Red Hook series. Tanja talks about the benefits of riding fixed and how she hopes to be able to ride fixie crits as part of next year's race calendar. This time on Faster, I'm talking to a trio of ultra-endurance riders about how you survive and win in some of the most extreme races in the world. Emily Chappell won the 4000 km Transcontinental race in 2016. James Hayden won it in 2017 and 2018. Shu Pillinger is the first British woman to finish the brutal cost-to-coast Race Across America, which she did in 2015. I find out about the dramatic differences between “normal” bike racing and events that continue non-stop for anything up to two weeks. And we talk about the sort of rider who can cope with it. “If you looked at the start line of a Transcontinental race, just the physical ability of the riders would be a bad way to try to pick the winner,” says Emily. Instead, you need the ability to keep eating, the ability to keep riding through the hallucinations of sleep deprivation, and the ability to measure an effort over days and days of racing. Above all, the three of them tell me that it's a mental game. As James puts it, “Over a race that lasts for days, your own brain can be your worst enemy.” We discuss the unexpectedly big differences between unsupported races like the Transcontinental, where riders must fend for themselves with no outside help, and supported races like the Race Across America, where the rider has a team of helpers. Finally, we hear from Shu on how her RAAM ride was only possible with the help of someone reading a pornographic novel in a Belgian accent. ------------------------- If you liked this episode of Faster, please tell your friends about it. An ultra-endurance cyclist, Emily Chappell started her biking adventures as a cycle courier in London before cycling from Wales to Japan. The cycling feats didn't end there and in 2016 Emily was the fastest woman home in the 2016 Transcontinental Race. An edited version of our summer Zoomcast with Emily Chappell.Emily is the author of the acclaimed What Goes Around (about life as a London bike courier) and Where There's a Will (about her 4000km unassisted ride across Europe in the Transcontinental cycle race). What Goes Around shows a new side to familiar city life, taking us inside the couriers' world, seen by everyone and known by no-one, while in Where There's A Will, Emily uses the lone physical challenge of her mighty ride across Europe to explore her own internal world, emotional and intellectual. An English graduate who says she was never one of the sporty crowd at school, Emily only became a serious athlete in her mid-20s. She brings a rare mix of a writerly thoughtfulness and serious athletic commitment to her books (and podcast conversations.) We recorded this on one of the hottest nights of the year. Maybe you can hear this in the relaxed and reflective nature of our chat, which takes in everything from how introverts can form a community to how cycling clubs can be more welcoming to newcomers - and what Emily learned about Lidl during her whistlestop European adventure.
The world of self supported, ultra distance cycle racing can seem a strange sub culture. Emily Chappell has captured the essence of being one of these sleep deprived, exhausted riders in her book Where there's a Will. She came to this odd type of racing after being a cycle courier in London, an experience captured in her first book What Goes Around. In this podcast Emily's reads from both books and these excerpts guide our conversation. This episode of Explore by The Cycling Podcast features Hannah Troop in conversation with Emily Chappell, who used to criss-cross London delivering and picking up parcels as a bike courier before discovering long-distance and endurance cycling. Chappell was the first woman to finish the 2016 Transcontinental race and her latest book, Where There's A Will, tells the story of how she won the race across Europe at the second attempt. The previous year she made it halfway before abandoning. In the second part of this episode, Ian Boswell talks to another rider who has crossed a continent by bike, albeit without leaving home. Timothy Rugg, a three-time stage winner at the Tour of Rwanda, set out to race across the United States on his turbo trainer. Riding across continents in some of the world's toughest cycle races. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women who've used their reserves of physical and mental strength. Fiona Kolbinger was the winner of the Transcontinental Race in 2019. She crossed Europe, from Bulgaria to France - a distance of 4000km - in ten days two hours and 48 minutes. She beat the second closest rider, a man, by almost six hours. She says when a part of her was in pain she focused on the bits of her body that had hurt yesterday but had got better, knowing that something different would hurt tomorrow! Emily Chappell worked as a cycle courier in London before developing a taste for long distance adventures, cycling from Wales across Asia to Japan. In her first Transcontinental Race in 2015 she made it only halfway, waking up suddenly on her back in a field, floored by the physical and mental exertion. The following year she was the first woman to cross the line - two days ahead of the other female competitors. She says these cycling challenges make her feel powerful and confident in all aspects of life and more women should give it a go. The TransCon is a self-supported, single-stage bike race across Europe. The clock starts and doesn’t stop until you arrive at the finish. And aside from a few checkpoints, there’s no set route. Participants map and plan their way across Europe and decide where and when to ride, eat and sleep along the way. In 2016, the race started in Belgium. And 3,800km and 13 days, 10 hours later, Emily arrived in Istambul, winning the women’s category in the process! While we discuss some of the events and adventures she’s had over the years, there are 2 key themes throughout this conversation. First, why it's important not to let what you've done (or not done) in the past define or limit what you think you’re capable of in the future. And secondly, being open to the idea that things which currently seem impossible actually aren’t. We are going long distance for a change on the latest Rouleur podcast. Lachlan Morton of EF Education First joins us to explain his thinking behind tackling some unusual and challenging events this season, a million miles away from the standard pro road racers' fare. From the GB Duro – Land's End to John O'Groats mostly on bridleways and country lanes – which Morton won, through to the legendary Three Peaks cyclo-cross in Yorkshire, the Australian has been riding with a big grin on his face having previously considered packing in road racing for a career. We also speak to another lover of ultra-distance racing, Emily Chappell, former bicycle courier and women's winner of the Transcontinental Race in 2016. Emily has an excellent new book out, Where There's a Will, detailing her trials and tribulations on the road and in life, which we highly recommend. Also, Desire editor Stuart Clapp gets the backstory and hears about the latest tweaks to the famous Castelli Gabba, the poor weather jacket of choice for the pro peloton. Ian Parkinson even lets him finish his interview without fading out… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Voxwomen Insider powered by Rawvelo host, Laura Winter chats with ultra cyclist, Emily Chappell, the voice of radio tour, Seb Piquet and Dave Rayner Fund's Jos Ryan with funded riders Isabella Stone and Rachel Jary as they chat about their new charitable status.
Our guest today is British ultra endurance cyclist Emily Chappell who started cycling as a commuter before becoming a courier in London for six years. But she eventually swapped the narrow roads of London Town for the open countryside to challenge herself in ultra races and long distance cycling. In 2011-13 she cycled across Asia and from Wales to Japan. A year later she took on Iceland. And then in first three months of 2015 it was Anchorage to Seattle, which was great preparation for the Transcontinental Race. Alas after dropping out halfway when she suspected she was having a heart problem which turned out to be painful intercostal ribs, she determined to give it another shot in 2016. She has recently published her second book Where There’s a Will in which she shares that journey. And as well as the complex emotions of winning such an event, she reveals everything that being a woman in events like this entails, from periods to body image and how cycling has helped her battle with depression. What if there was a way to make the world a better place while you shop for cute jewelry and accessories that you love? Wait, you didn't know there already is?! You must not have heard of Noonday Collection before! Enter Emily. Emily Chappell is a wife, mom, educator, and Noonday ambassador. In this episode, Emily is telling us alllll about Noonday and more generally about being a conscious consumer. To view the full show notes, keep reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com Noonday began 8 years ago when the founder, Jessica Honegger, was adopting internationally. Now, Jessica co-runs the largest fair trade, direct sales fashion brand in the world! This company is single-handedly changing the reputation of direct sales. It works like this: artisans across the globe living in marginalized communities make beautiful products, and then ambassadors in the US sell their products where there is a market for them, and both earn an income! Oh, and did I mention they are fair trade certified, a Certified B Corporation, and make their products out of recycled, natural materials? Emily actually got to witness all of this when she went to Peru with Noonday to visit some of the artisans, which she tells us all about in the show. Emily also explains why shopping ethically is important no matter where you're shopping from. She teaches us how we can be more conscious consumers, and how that doesn't automatically mean you need to quit shopping at your favorite stores. Rather, it can be as simple as checking where a product was made before purchasing it. When we as consumers increase the demand for ethically-made goods, we are going to make an impact on this world and the labor behind the label. If you are listening to this, you are most likely living in a well-established country, which means that you have a responsibility. How cool is it that we can take action in such fun ways as supporting companies like Noonday? You can also join in the fun by supporting Noonday and hosting a trunk show! Ask Emily how! On this bumper episode... Andy & Stu review The Boutique-y Whisky Company's 35 year old Blended Whisky #1 and also take a trip to the Whisky Lounge's Newcastle Whisky Festival (with some drunken field recordings for your dubious listening pleasure). They create a playlist of songs from albums with excellent artwork in honour of Emily Chappell's fantastic labels, you can hear these on our Spotify playlists if you search for the username: Thisismydram. The usual features crop up, including scoring the whisky in the Dramier League Table, and the "exciting" conclusion of Jingle Wars. Thanks to Dave from That Boutique-y Whisky Company for answering our questions over email. Feel free to follow us on Twitter @thisismydram, and check out our blog www.thisismydram.com
2016 has been tough for a lot of people, and what with politics, the economy, Daylight Savings Times in the northern hemisphere, and so on, a lot of people are feeling bleak right now. So when Emily Chappell suggested we podcast on how the women's cycling world is changing for the better, and how we can all have positive impacts on that, I jumped at the chance. We talked about Emily's own year - winning the women's TransContinental race (read her blog about that!), and her other successes (including having her book published) and also about the Adventure Syndicate. I can't quote believe it hasn't been around for even a year, but wow, those women have done so many great things. All this, and more - including Emily's and my pledges for our own 2017 cycling challenges (Emily says she'll try cyclocross, if someone will show her how, so if that's you, get in touch with her!). Click through to my blog for the usual ton of links.
Emily shares more of her remarkable story of how she first entered the world of cycling and how it changed her, how she grew to love it and how it took her on adventures all over the world. Emily is a master story teller, and during this podcast we get to go with her, to experience the highlights and learn from her mistakes along the way. This is a very open and revealing interview, Emily talks about depression, dealing with failure and why she’s so passionate about encouraging more women to enter the world of cycling. Shownotes Emily introduces herself and shares a little more about who she is Why she ends up talking about danger a lot! Why she found cycling in London empowering Becoming a cycle courier and what it was like Learning on the job and why she wanted to do a winter on the bike so she could call herself a proper ‘cycle courier’ Deciding she wanted to do a bigger cycling challenge & being inspired by Alastair Humphreys Realising she could take on a bigger trip and having the courage to do so What she learnt most while planning her round the world trip and why next time she wouldn’t plan as much Remembering the day she set off and what she was feeling The highlights! Surviving the Turkish winter and why she remembers it as one of the best times of her life! Why she’s still trying to work out what drives her and motivates her How she knew it was right to finish the cycle and head home at the end of Asia and not continue Dealing with the adventure blues and being clinically depressed for a year Postponing the rest of her cycle until 2015 and why it was hard to give up on the dream but why she knows it was the best thing for her Going back to being a cycle courier and why it helped her recovery In 2014 - Turning her blog into a book! Setting off from Anchorage on the 2nd January 2015 Dealing with fear while heading off into the great unknown The magical encounters that happened on the way Camping at -40! Dealing with the loneliness & isolation What she’s learnt about herself while on these trips What the Transcontinental Race across Europe is and why she wanted to cycle it Becoming obsessed with sleep - but not allowing herself to sleep…dealing with chest pains and ending up in hospital Winning the women category in the Transcontinental Race 2016!! What can we do to encourage more women to enter long distance cycling races? The Adventure Syndicate - What its aims our and why it was started Emily’s next challenge! Visit Emily’s website! Say hi to Emily on twitter! @emilychappell
I'm really excited about this brand new cycling-and-women project, The Adventure Syndicate, that brings together nine amazing women who have incredible adventures on (and off) the bike, to share their stories, and inspire other women (and men too) to have their own cycling experiences too. I interviewed two of the Syndicate members about it - cycle courier, solo round-the-world-ish cyclist, and author Emily Chappell, and Scottosh cross country MTB star Lee Craigie. They told me how it came about, who else is involved, and where they want to take it all in the future - including how everyday cyclists can get involved in their North Coast 500, and hang out with them in Inverness on the weekend of 14th May. Click through to my blog for all the links to things we talked about (including a skiier being chased by a bear): https://prowomenscycling.com/2016/05/02/emily-chappell-and-lee-craigie-on-the-adventure-syndicate/
Jack Thurston heads to mid-Wales to meet Emily Chappell, former London bike messenger turned author turned ultra endurance racer. Plus the social enterprise that's finding a new use for the Royal Mail's unwanted fleet of postal bikes, as Elephant Bikes. Continue reading →
Meet Emily Chappell, a hero of mine. A reformed London cycle courier, she’s cycled from Wales to Japan, from Anchorage to Seattle in the depth of winter and raced across Europe on the gruelling Transcontinental Race. On Thursday 3 March 2016 I took her for lunch - excuse the background noise - and we talked about the joys and perceived pitfalls of riding long distances alone, ice lollies versus ice cream and how riding the Alaska Highway is actually easier than a winters day in the United Kingdom. Emily’s new book is What Goes Around: A London Cycle Courier's Story, find out more about it on her fantastic blog: http://thatemilychappell.com/2016/01/by-the-way/ Music is Beyond the Blue Horizon by The Green Brothers: https://archive.org/details/GreenBrothers147Songs
This week we find ourselves out of doors on the windswept islands of Orkney with Amy Liptrot and among the traffic-clogged streets of London with Emily Chappell
In Part 2 of our ride on the wheels of time, we meander through London with ex-cycle couriers turned writers Jon Day and Emily Chappell. To explore the metropolis with mind, body and bike. For six years, Emily Chappell was a cycle courier in London, living that dream of cycling-as-livelihood, and she's now written a book about her life. Of course it focuses on that courier lifestyle, but it weaves in so much more - stories about living in the city, romance and heartbreak, psychogeography, love of cycling, and addressing that glamour around couriering, and how it's changed and changing. I talked to Chappell about how she moved from blogging to writing, how couriering lead to bigger bike adventures (Cycling solo across Europe to Japan! Riding across Alaska on a fatbike in winter! Moving into ultra-endurance racing!) and lots more. This is a long interview (sorry Emily!) so there's a write-up of parts of it it over on Podium Café: http://www.podiumcafe.com/2015/12/17/10312928/interview-emily-chappell Click through to my blog for all the links of things we talked about, and for the opportunity to win a free copy of the book: http://prowomenscycling.com/2015/12/17/sarah-interviews-emily-chappell/
