Drew and Stephen are here to discuss the second episode of Surviving Bloomington Season 7 - Mischief Makers! They are joined by Surviving Reelfoot alum James Hayden to dive into the episode. Together, they knock on some trees, discuss the first player voted out, and how players should perhaps be more aggressive about looking for keys. As a head up, at the end of the podcast, there is a discussion about gifs as well as a secret scene from the episode. You can watch these on the YouTube video version of this podcast. Maya and Cynthia talk to James Hayden, a person who stutters, a Tedx speaker, and the author of “Dear World, I Stutter.”Many stutterers like James and Maya have been discriminated against because of their stutter, whether it be in a job, during an interview, or at school. So often, we pass judgments on people by our first impressions of them, often without giving it a second thought. But how often do we take the time to look beyond our first impressions of someone? In this episode, Maya and Cynthia talk to James about first impressions and how to let go of self-judgment when stuttering in front of new people.LINKS!Purchase Jame's book here.Read writings by James here, here, here, and here.Support us:DonateBuy cute merchEmail: info@proudsutter.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/proud-stutter/exclusive-content
Have you ever questioned your purpose? Felt insecure about your identity? Been down a road toward your dream career and then the path took a severe turn....like into a ditch? We've all had seasons or moments when the universe revealed a path that is different from what we "think" we want. This is a familiar story on the 20/20 perspective but you haven't heard it from James before. On this episode, our guest is a writer, HLA technologist, and PWS (person who stutters) from the New Orleans area. James Hayden has guest lectured at several universities across the country and has presented at both national and international conferences. His work has been published by The Mighty, The Stuttering Foundation of America, Stamma, MSN, and Yahoo. James was also a speaker at the inaugural TEDxOchsner in 2019.In our conversation, we talk with James about:Being fired from his dream job was one of the best things that ever happened to him.Going “behind the curtain” for the first time to be honest, vulnerable, and transparentFailing can catapult you into your true purpose and your authentic self (whether you like it or not)Failure can be beautifulA lovely and insightful poem from James a few days after he was fired:If we encounter growth from a bad experience, then was it truly a bad experienece? Does that mean we failed because the experience was bad?Is it failure if we grow?Is it failure if we learn? Is it failure if we experience joy?Is it failure if we experience peace? Is it failure?I'm learning that it's ok to not be okI'm learning that failure isn't always failureI'm learning that joy can come from failure.I'm learning that failure will not define me, but I will define it.I'm learning.--by James HaydenLearn more about James below:Book: Dear World, I Stutter: A Series of Open Letters From A Person Who StuttersTwitter: @jameshayden48LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesrhayden/Blog: https://stutteredblog.wordpress.com/Email: dearworldistutter@gmail.comArticles on The Mighty: https://themighty.com/u/james-hayden/The Stuttering FoundationStamma organizationNational Stuttering Association
This time on Faster, I'm talking to a trio of ultra-endurance riders about how you survive and win in some of the most extreme races in the world. Emily Chappell won the 4000 km Transcontinental race in 2016. James Hayden won it in 2017 and 2018. Shu Pillinger is the first British woman to finish the brutal cost-to-coast Race Across America, which she did in 2015. I find out about the dramatic differences between “normal” bike racing and events that continue non-stop for anything up to two weeks. And we talk about the sort of rider who can cope with it. “If you looked at the start line of a Transcontinental race, just the physical ability of the riders would be a bad way to try to pick the winner,” says Emily. Instead, you need the ability to keep eating, the ability to keep riding through the hallucinations of sleep deprivation, and the ability to measure an effort over days and days of racing. Above all, the three of them tell me that it's a mental game. As James puts it, “Over a race that lasts for days, your own brain can be your worst enemy.” We discuss the unexpectedly big differences between unsupported races like the Transcontinental, where riders must fend for themselves with no outside help, and supported races like the Race Across America, where the rider has a team of helpers. Finally, we hear from Shu on how her RAAM ride was only possible with the help of someone reading a pornographic novel in a Belgian accent. ------------------------- If you liked this episode of Faster, please tell your friends about it. Welcome to Episode 1 of Ride Buddies! In this episode, Jenny and James cover a lot of interesting ground: from Jenny's world record as the fastest female to cycle unsupported around the world to James's impressive endurance race podium finishes. They talk about what it's like to ride through the night to see the next day's sunrise. They discuss their different approaches to doing what is ultimately the same thing (going really fast on really, really long bike rides). They crack countless jokes. They laugh...a lot. And they also reflect on life lessons they've learned along the way. We've got nothing but respect for both of them and hopefully you're just as excited as we were to listen. So saddle up and tune in 'cause you're in for a great ride with these two.Full episode recap here: https://ridewithgps.com/journal/5385-ride-buddies-episode-1
On May 22nd Liam Glen lined up at the start of the Highland Trail 550 on his fully rigid single speed Stooge Cycles Scrambler against the likes of James Hayden, Josh Isbett, and others. He would go on to win with a time of 3d, 10h, 55m which was good enough to get the SS Course Record and almost enough to best the Course Record set by Neil Beltchenko in 2017 (3d, 10h, 20m). Liam is no stranger to this event, he also won it in 2016 with a time of 4d, 2h, 48m. After a 2019 DNF on this route he switched up his bike and his mindset which proved to be the winning receipt. No doubt about it, this was an impressive run at this course, but when you factor in that he was riding a steel, rigid, ss (34x20) it's kinda mind blowing. The Highland Trail 550 is a route created by Alan Goldsmith in the northern region of Scotland, covering 550 miles with 52,500 ft of climbing through Scotland's rugged terrain and unpredictable weather. It was great to catch up with Liam for a chat. I wasn't familiar with him prior to this event, but that's what's exciting about being a podcaster in this space right now. It's so much fun to talk to someone who accomplished something absolutely remarkable, but yet we know so little about them. I hope you'll enjoy hearing about this amazing accomplishment, but also what it took, and his path to get there. These shows aren't possible without your support! Thank you to our newest sustaining Patrons!

Shalom! You think the only wise guys in this fuckin' country are Micks and Wops? I got news for ya, Bubbe! The Chosen People got plenty of Matza Balls, too! Thanks to our loyal listener, Patrick, Kevin and Scott were gifted with the recently restored director's cut of Sergio Leone's classic gangster epic, "Once Upon a Time in America". The film chronicles the lives of Jewish hoodlums growing up in the Big Apple. Spanning multiple decades and covering themes of friendship, betrayal, love, lust, greed and power, it's a true American Dream story. It is also very, very long. Oy Vey! Grab a knish and some kugel, cuz it's gonna be a long ride. Mozel Tov!
I am so thankful to belong to a community of creators that are showing the world that if you have a stutter, know that you are not alone and that you have a community to support, inform and inspire you. For Long Island’s homeless population, hunkering down indoors isn’t an easy option. Episode 14 of “Life Under Coronavirus” follows Dwayne Brown, outreach worker for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, while Brown meets with James Hayden who has been sleeping near the water in East Rockaway and trying not to get sick. Hayden talks about the impact of public spaces being closed, which Brown agrees has only made life harder for already vulnerable Long Islanders. “There's nowhere for them to go,” says Brown.
Lots of experts throw out words like "transparency" and "authenticity" in an attempt to seem more relatable to their audiences. But it's neither "transparent" or "authentic" if your messages changes from what it really is to something different just because a mic is on, you're otherwise being recorded, or somebody else is in the room watching. Everybody has a thing. By that I mean, we all have something about ourselves we don't like or would like to change. And I'd argue that most people spend a lot of time denying that thing or trying to work around it. This is the stuff we don't share – it's the "secret" we hope nobody discovers. Then there are people who lean into these "secrets," not only acknowledging them, but using it as a foundation to build upon. James Hayden is one of those people...but he wasn't always. Today he writes and speaks about the one thing he tried to hide for years. This is a story about jumping in and taking control and your life. James Hayden has done that via public speaking. As somebody with a message to spread, even if public speaking isn't your medium, you will connect with it.

December 21 | Episode 6 This episode of Explore tells two stories. In the first half, Lionel Birnie travels to mid-Wales to meet Anna Haslock, race director of the Transcontinental Race and partner of the late Mike Hall, who founded the event. It brings the debut series of Explore full circle. In episode one we met James Hayden, winner of the Transcontinental Race two years running, and in episode two we spoke to Rupert Guinness, who was riding the Indian Pacific Wheel Race when Mike was killed. Mike's influence has been felt far and wide in the world of endurance cycling. Mike inspired so many people in the world of bikepacking, so we wanted to find out more about his life and legacy. In part two, we hear from the current round the world record holders. Jenny Graham has recenly become the fastest woman to ride round the world, riding unsupported, and taking 124 days. And Mark Beaumont is the fastest man to ride round the world, completing his supported ride in 78 days in 2017. This sixth episode of Explore is not the end of the debut season – Lionel Birnie and Hannah Troop will be back on January 1 with a bonus seventh episode. **Explore by The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.** **RUNNING ORDER** **Part 1:** Anna Haslock, race director of the Transcontinental Race on the event and Mike Hall's life and legacy. **Part 2:** (from 52:00) Around the world with record-breakers Jenny Graham and Mark Beaumont. **THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS** **Rapha** support The Cycling Podcast all year and that support has enabled us to get the wheels rolling on series one of Explore. November 16 | Episode 1 The Cycling Podcast’s new series **Explore** focuses on the booming world of endurance and ultra endurance riding and bikepacking. Join hosts Lionel Birnie and Hannah Troop, plus producer Tom Whalley, for a six-part series with new episodes released each Friday morning. Over the course of the series we’ll hear inspirational stories from people who have undertaken some remarkable challenges on two wheels. We’ll hear from someone who rode to Australia, someone who rode across Australia, from round-the-world riders and End-to-End record-breakers. We’ll hear from pro racers, leisure riders and even the self-styled Slow Cyclist. In this opening episode we focus on the **Transcontinental Race**, which has has established itself as Europe’s most well-known bikepacking race. Founded in 2013 by the late Mike Hall, the race has been won for the past two years by James Hayden. Hannah interviews James about the challenge of winning back-to-back editions of the TCR, about how he chooses his route and focuses on his goal of reaching the finish first. Before that, though, we hear the other side of the coin from Richard Abraham, who talks about the emotional effects of scratching from the race 2,000 kilometres in. His account puts into perspective the scale of James’s achievement. In part two we learn about the group of women who form the **Donnons des Elles au Vélo** in riding the Tour de France route one day ahead of the race as they seek to push for a women’s equivalent to Le Tour. We hear from Tetiana Kalachova, who has ridden successive Tours, from Mathieu Istil, who helps to put together the ride from a logistical point of view, and from Juliet Elliott, who is more used to racing short, intense events but joined to ride one stage of the event this year. **THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS** **Rapha** support The Cycling Podcast all year and that support has enabled us to get the wheels rolling on series one of Explore.
